I am a book geek. (See previous post on this subject here: Harlequin Warehouse Trip.) I love reading books, writing books, touching books, sniffing books, and thinking about books.
So you can imagined my delight when I got some behind-the-scenes info from the cover design sessions for my upcoming May book, The Boyfriend's Back.
The first shot was the original concept for the cover. My editor requested some changes because she thought the first draft wasn't as flirty as she'd like. I'm absolutely not a visual person so I wouldn't be able to pinpoint what makes something flirty, but I do like the second version better.
I spotted five things that were changed from the first to second draft. It's like that feature in the Highlights magazine from the dentist office--can you spot the differences?

I was really glad to get this extra look at the process and so I thought I'd share it with you. Thanks, Victoria, for making sure the cover came out great! I'm super glad they added the tie. I like the tie.

I'm 3/4 asleep so I can only spot 3 changes unless you are counting some background changes because the car is moved? I like the tie, also. It says he is relaxing--getting comfortable. I think I may have spotted a 4th one but I'm not sure as it is just a color change.

So, any opinions on why they added the bracelets? Just to put more fun in the picture? Maybe they always accessorize after the fact because Photoshop bracelets are cheaper than real wardrobe pieces?

Snippet
In the great eHarlequin tradition of posting snippets, I thought I'd share a smidge of the scene that's depicted on the cover:
(Background: Hailey's car has a flat tire. She's never changed one before and she's already had a pretty bad day. This is the first day that JT is back in town after a fifteen-year absence. JT is the boyfriend in the title. He went away, but now he's back.
)
I had a lot of fun writing that scene. It does get flirty.

Hi,
You know, when I wrote the scene, I purposely dressed the hero in an untucked white dress shirt with his suit jacket over his shoulder because that's a look I find irresistible. I didn't think to include the undone tie, but, boy, do I like that addition!

Changing the tire
Kaelee--get yourself a good breakfast, friend!
I'm with Hailey--I understand the theory of changing a tire but I've never actually done it. And, to be honest, I didn't even do that well with the theory. One of my RWA chaptermates had to correct my tire changing technique when I read this section at critique. Thank goodness I have smart friends!

The tie
I'm so intrigued by this tie issue. I must ask Victoria if she specifically requested that to increase the flirty percentage.
Another thing I like is Hailey's nail polish. I don't wear nail polish so I don't often think to give it to my characters. Hailey is definitely a nail polish kind of person, though. I'm glad the art people went with it.

Ellen, this is way too cool!
I'm finishing a book today, but I have to stop and play... who could resist this Harlequin version of Highlights? (UM, Jayne? I think we have something that should be a repeated feature here... feel free to use my July cover, LOL...) I didn't look at posts yet, just playing the game...
The first thing I noticed was the perspective change, closer up and leaning on a wall, not the car. So they show the car, and give it that sporty edge.
Then they added his tie -- nice touch. :)
Hmmm... that's only 3... there are two more? Now I have to go back and see, because I can't find the other two...and I do have to get back to writing. *G*

This was fun!
I enjoyed looking for the differences. I guess the delicate little bracelets just increase the feminine punch a bit, maybe. The tie is definitely adding a flirty feel because one assumes that he was fully buttoned up with tie all properly knotted to begin with. The fact that the tie is hanging and the shirt is unbuttoned suggests that he's getting "more comfortable" (kind of like the old cliche, "Excuse me while I slip into something more comfortable.") So, in your mind, he's started undressing.
The difference I noticed first is that his face seems to be in slightly less shadow in the more flirty picture. The shadows under his eyes aren't so deep. Perhaps that's so you can see the intensity of his expression just a little bit better.
Moving the car has me a bit baffled, except that it allows you to see his other hand, which was a bit awkwardly cut off at the wrist (a no-no in photography to cut limbs off at a joint). Perhaps they also wanted to show more of the car, a sexy red convertible, than you could see in the first picture. Hmmm.
What I wonder is how they "found" his second hand! Hands are not particularly easy to draw in a natural pose without a model.

I can't add anything new to what was and wasn't found. But I was immediately struck by the lighting differences in pic 1 and pic 2. His shadowed face in pic 1 gives it a more ominous feel. The bracelets and tie were the next items I spotted. Why I had to go back twice before I noticed the read car had been moved...

Hi Nancy,
When Victoria sent these to me, she mentioned she'd tried to get the tone changed from passion to flirty. I bet the lighting differences you're seeing would contribute to that type of change.

cover and snippet
I saw all of the difference pretty quickly - and its amazing how those little things make a difference.
And I'm so glad she was trying to loosen the tires before she jacked the car up, even if I had to sit and mentally picture myself doing this to decide if it was possible to loosen a nut by going down. (Remember, righty tighty, lefty loosey? My DH quotes that to our sons regularly, and to me when I'm trying to tightening a lid instead of loosening it.)
I read a older story a while back, and the woman owned a limo company. She gets a flat, and hops out to change it, while her male passenger offers to do it for her. She jacked the car up, loosens the nuts, takes it off, puts the new tire back on and tightens everything down, lowers the car off the jack and drives off. NOT possible. If you haven't done this yourself - those nuts are on so tight, that if you do the initial loosening while the tire is in the air, the whole wheel spins, and your nut never loosens. Same thing with getting them really tight - gotta be on the ground. I was driving my minivan one night when my husband was away. Realized that things were not right, so I stopped and checked the tires. The lug nuts were only hand tight on one wheel. He had rotated the tires, but had forgotten to tighten that wheel once the van was on the ground. So they started backing off as I was driving. I was not impressed to say the least.
Lynne
Lynne-RC,
You're absolutely right about not being able to tighten up the lugnuts or loosen them initially while the tire is jacked up. My father insisted that I learn how to change a tire before I was ever allowed to drive off on my own, and it has come in handy more than once.

thanks jv
that one little scene in the older book irked me the whole way through, and took away from my enjoyment of the story. For me, it wasn't my father that taught me about cars, but my boyfriend, now my DH. If I had to, I could change the oil. He even taught me how to rebuild a carburettor. Not that I could now, nor want to, but at least I understand what is being said when he's with all his friends! (But why should I change the oil or do repairs? DH doesn't cook, do dishes or laundry, so I don't do car maintenance or repairs if he's around)
Lynne
Blushing
Lynne-RC and JV,
I've never changed a tire--just lucky enough that it's never come up. Thus, when I first wrote the scene, Hailey jacked the car up and then started loosening the nuts. (That seems like a logical order if you know nothing about changing a tire.) Thank goodness I read this section at critique at my RWA meeting and one of my chaptermates set me straight.
I'm sending her a thank you note RIGHT NOW!

Ellen,
It does seem logical to do it the other way until you forget to loosen them sometime. That's when you realize that the pressure on one side just sends the tire spinning around. I've forgotten that step before and had to lower the car, loosen the lugnuts, and jack it back up again. I had this happen to me one night when I was about 17 on an unlit backroad on my way to visit a friend. I was with 2 other girls when the tire went flat.
As we were working to get the spare tire out of the trunk (the nut that held it in place had been screwed back down improperly, like a jar where you get the lid on crooked, and it was harder than heck to get it off), a young man pulled up behind us and asked if we needed a hand. We were so happy to see him, until we realized that his idea of giving us a hand was to angle his car so the lights shone on the flat tire area -- while sitting in his car watching us change the tire! Not terribly gallant, but, hey, the light was helpful. So, we showed him some girl power and got the job done, after having to lower and then rejack the car to get the lugnuts loosened!

reading all these comments about changing tires
tells me one thing. I'm REALLY glad i have AAA! LOL I just call them and they come do it. I did learn years ago the basics about changing a tire but I've never had to do it so I've probably forgotten most of it. I'd be one of the ones jacking the car up first before trying to take the tires off. LOL
And I work with mostly guys so more than once when I've gotten a flat tire here, I got one of the guys to do it for me. :-) (Lots of construction going on here for teh past couple/few years so really easy to pick up construction debris or loose nails in the tires)

Hi Ellen and all - looking at the new cover and it says several
things to me - the car moved away means it's less about the bachelor seduction routine - that he's willing to move away from that for her
I would have liked a blue tie, they're a bit too colour-coordinated
Seeing both his hands fosters the idea she can trust him
the cloudy sky with the lighting says that even though they'll have trouble they'll get through it (cause the car is hiding what was a very dark spot on the screen before and freeing up a nicely lit part of the screen it was previously hiding)
two non-ostentatious bracelets tell me she'll appreciate simple good-quality jewelry, that bling doesn't blind her
or am I reading this totally wrong?

Analysis
Sadhbh,
I love your take on the cover. I think you hit most of it right on the nose. I especially like the part about the bling.
Hailey has her own business and I think she would buy good jewelery but she'd know when to quit!
The car is actually hers. In the book it's about 18 years old--she got it for her 16th birthday and has kept it ever since. I think the picture on the cover is a bit shinier than her car would really be. (But it's a cover, so that's all right. Covers are supposed to be pretty.)
The moving away from the past (symbolized by the car) part is definitely true, though. Hailey and JT knew each other when they were kids and they need to get past those old perceptions of each other to learn who they are now.
Thanks for your analysis!
Ellen
P.S. Love the insight about the hands and how seeing them both means she can trust him.
