Oh boy... so much for part of the self-challenge that I set myself! I was hoping that my book acquiring would slow down a bit and that I'd be able to work through my TBR a little more consistently, but here it is, January 19 and I've already managed to add to my large TBR, 47 books ~ that's not including the books that I got in trade from Karen and Michaela (49) ~ and a few eBooks here and there. Uh, yeah... so far in the new year I've managed to add over 100 books to my TBR.
Oh and BTW, Happy Birthday to my nephew and godson, Chris... who is at present in Mexico waiting for his travel partner to return from Australia before they begin their year journeying through South America. Happy 21 Chris!
But I do have to admit that I've been reading more of the books from my TBR than I've been reading the new (and new-to-me) books... well, the ratio is 15 to 21 (I'm almost done the newest book that I received yesterday (#21) ~ Ellora's Cave Twelve Quickies of Christmas Vol. 1. As for the other challenge ~ reading books out of my comfort zone ~ um, not yet... but I do have some!
I guess the best thing is that I'm reading and loving it, and that I'm enjoying being here at our new eHarlequin home even though during the week I'm not able to do nearly as much as I was last year. But that's okay too ~ I've got my little ones during the day and am keeping extremely busy (what an understatement that is!)
So for now, we'll call it a good beginning to 2008 and go from there.
I just want to say how very much I am enjoying the new forums that I've stumbled across ~ now I just wish that I could spend more time here!

Books and more Books
Kalyko;
I sympathize. I too have a problem with piles of books coming in the mail (subscriptions, orders etc) and not nearly enough time to read them all. They pile in my home office (and perhaps try to overtake it, together with waiting to be read professional journals, articles etc), my bedroom, living room coffee table etc etc.

Instill the love for reading in our children and reward them for life!!
Oh I know...
...and then I think that maybe it's a good thing that our kids are moving out... then I could use one of their rooms as a library!
.... It's just a thought...

Hmmm kids moving out
It won't be any cheaper.... I end up paying for the kid even though she moved out. She is in Master program at Teachers College at Columbia Univ and is student teaching which means working lots and lots but no money - they take student teachers in the schools because they don't have to pay them. I use her room as a catch all most of the time but have to clear it out when she comes home for the weekend.... thus the O R G A N I Z A T I O N resolution I made and vow to keep. I just got in my Lora Leigh purchase, ordered from Eharl this Fr (thanks for code again Lorie) and the Waldenbookstore I usually go to is closing and I have been helping them get rid of some books.... January has not been a read more than you buy month.... It HAS to taper off though....(The store closes on the 26th and I just want to pick up the older Feehan books at 25% off all purchases)
My sister says SALE is a four letter word
Jeannie
Yes I am a readalholic and I don't want the 12 step program!!!
Sale being a 4-letter-word...
... bothers my dh far more than it does me! Usually... 'til I get home and then it's trying to find space on my shelves... *sigh*

I know
It bothers sister more than me to see all the books around. They are like a security blanket of love surrounding me. I can grab one and a blanket and something to drink and need nothing else for hours. I don't turn on TV during the day.

EXACTLY!!!
...As far as I'm concerned, reading is a win-win proposition all the way 'round.
Books are the manna of life! 'Kay, maybe that's stretching it a bit... but honestly ~ books? They're great!

I've been pretty good this month...
I've only bought 3 books, but I do have an eharl order due any day now and I think there was 10 in the order! Plus I have a Chapters bookstore coupon, spend $50 save $10 and it expires Feb 15/08. (Is it just me? Or is there something funny about getting excited to save $10 by spending $50!?)
Mind you, I don't think I have been reading as much either. Between this site and just getting myself organized at home my reading seems to have slowed. Funny thing... I'm not really missing it either. I'm not worried though, I have been due for a bit of a slump and the timing is perfect right now.

There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the pleasure is having lots to do and not doing it!
December was a BAD month
from your pov (not mine
) but i've only ordered about thirty books so far this year, though to be honest I'll probably order books next Friday - but that will only be another ten or so
And given that I've already read 50 this month
What bothers DH is the boxes of books all over the house (though he does like the M bags they come in
- really handy for throwing bedlinen and duvets in when we're going away for the weekend, and they're even practically transparent)
What he'd like is for me to give them away when I've finished them (though he's a rereader too, so I can't understand that logic)
What he forgets is that without holidays, when am i supposed to find the time to get organized?

Nope... definitely not you! I go for the Save $5 when you spend $35 deal... my dh doesn't see that it save anything, but when I'm going to be buying books anyway, doesn't it make sense to save every bit of $$ that you can? *grin*
And while my new books this month are a lot, my ratio is 74% of books read coming from my TBR... probably the best that it's ever been!
Sadhbh, yeah I asked my dh if the tools on the rack that he has in our downstairs storage room couldn't be moved to the garage with his other tools and thingies. First thing he said was "So you can put in more shelves for your books?"... smart man!

I agree! When I was a little kid I used to carry books around like a security blanket. Still do...what if I get some place and have to wait or am bored by the people/activities around me. I don't travel as much as I once did but if I have to be away from my books, at least 2 have to go with me.

I wanted to use my coupon tonight...
I was in Chapters and couldn't find $50 in books that I wanted to buy. I did find 2, but put them back on the shelf and wrote down the titles. I'll try again in a week or so and maybe I'll find a new release or 2.
Funny thing about spending $50 to save $10 - it's really only 20% - not a lot to get excited about. Esp. when I don't normally buy from Chapters. They have a rewards deal that you have to pay $25 annually to get. Well, I'm sorry - I'm not going to pay that for the privlege of saving 10% in-store and only 5% on-line. Wal-mart does better than that. I can order on-line at Amazon and usually get good prices too.

I don't understand those
I don't understand those rewards cards, I mean - maybe 5 bucks, but why would I pay 25 dollars for a reward card, when I can often get the same discount other places without one. I would like buy more at b&n if the reward system made more sense.

Books are the manna of life...
So many times over the years books have been such a saving grace ~ and I know for a fact that reading has allowed me to calm down in a way very little else does.
It's that books take me away from where I am, the way that I'm feeling and gives me a chance to just be somewhere else.
Unlike other addictions, I think being a book / readaholic is healthy and very good for you!

Cards...
I do have one for Chapters / Coles (et al) and I use it a lot... lately mostly online.
I do shop at Zellers and Superstore (25%) and London Drugs (20%) off, but a lot of times they don't have the selection; especially when I'm looking for the latest Jim Butcher, Karen Chance, and so on and so forth.
I also get a number of mailings with some good deals and then there are the times when Chapters / Coles have the 30% off and an extra 10% for *members*. I do a lot of gift shopping with those deals!
