Instant Seduction Writing Competition
It’s an exciting time for Harlequin Presents—starting in January 2008, twelve of our intensely passionate romances will be available every month. And with this increase of titles comes a great opportunity for aspiring authors—we will be looking to buy more books for publication!
The old saying goes that first impressions are lasting impressions—and when it comes to reading a Harlequin Presents book, that certainly holds true. If the first chapter doesn’t immediately grip the reader with its pace, passion and intensity, she won’t continue to turn the pages.
So, Harlequin is inviting unpublished writers to show us how they can grab the attention of our readership with first chapters that really sizzle. Entries for the competition will be accepted as on-line submissions only from 1st January until 14th February 2008. Entries should comprise of the first chapter and a synopsis of a previously unpublished/unsubmitted novel aimed at Harlequin Presents.
Address for entries: instantseduction@hmb.co.uk

Contest Entry
I have went to the I Heart Presents web site repeatedly, in hope of gleaning any clues to write a better contest entry. I did ask and was told I could enter more than one entry, but that think of quality rather than quantity. Is anyone else going to enter more than once?
Good luck to everyone entering.
Thanks. I need good
Thanks. I need good luck. I'd like to avoid the slush pile if I can. I only have one Presents written. Although I do already have a plan for the next and if I want to press myself I could probably produce another before the deadline but I probably won't. How many are you entering?
Entires
Toots - I think two. I have one that is a cross bethween a presents and a ModEx and one that I think is a Presents. I have only received form R's from Presents so I want to try a different style for me and see if it works.
The idea of an Editor for a year is intriguing. I am not going to enter until I hear from my SuperRomance pitch requested three chapters. I also have one ms that might be a candidate for Steeple Hill LIS.
Who knows. I only know I love reading Presents and can't wait to see who wins this contest. All of the authors for the line are lovely.
I usally write romantic
I usally write romantic suspense and this was an interesting thing to me, the process of writing a Presents. It was so emotional and I used so many different words than I normally use. I will still write RS but I know I'll write more books like this too. I kind of enjoyed the right to be as sappy and love inspired as I wanted to be. It was kind of refreshing. I liked it.
I agree!
At first I was a little puzzled as to how to write without a suspenseful element. I have received R's with comments on my suspense and enjoy writing them, so it was tough to focus on the relationship. And yet, I have the feeling I needed more of the romance in my ms's.
Entries
I wavered on whether or not to enter, but ended up entering two. Both were Nanowrimo books. One from 2005 and one from 2007. I started reading romances because of a Presents years and years ago, so I couldn't resist trying to write them, too.
Good luck everyone!

Hey Girls!
just a question hopefully someone can answer, cause lord knows I can't seem to find out the answer on my own, but what the heck is the difference between modx and modern heat? If I understand you can enter the presents contest with a ms targeted at the regular presents, or the modern heat...but I'm sure I've heard of modx.....

Hey Jules,
Modern Extras are from M&B, I know they're available in the UK.
Modern Heats, if I remember correctly, are the overseas versions of either Presents or Desires. I THINK. I'm pretty sure that's how it goes. I don't know the ins and out of M&B that well, I'm afraid.
Hope that elps a little,
Dee

Modern Extra
Hi Jules! Modern Extra and Modern Heat are one and the same thing. Modern Heat being the new name for ModX over here in the UK. I *think* when they arrive in the States they’re called something like Presents collections? Anything out in Presents by Susan Napier, Julie Cohen, Kelly Hunter, Natalie Anderson, Robyn Grady (I know I'm forgetting some) would previously have been out as ModX/Mod Heat in the UK. Hope helps.
Sue - still working on her competition entry
Thanx Sue and Dee....that
Thanx Sue and Dee....that clarifies things....I did notice some titles by those girls this month...they have a spiffy little emblem on the cover I guess that's what identifies them as mod heat...good...that's the line I'm going for....so I'd better get back at it!

ModX and Mod Heat
Hi guys!
Modern Heat is what Modern Extras are called now! They're absolutely the same - they just got a name change in the UK from the start of this year. Same books, different series name that's all.
To add to the confusion they're known as Sexy Sensation in Australia/New Zealand!
But yes - Kate Hardy, Kelly Hunter, Nicola Marsh, Ally Blake, Trish Wylie, Heidi Rice, Anne Oliver ummmm I've left many off too - oops! But there are some names to start with (and me)
Good luck for the competition!!!

Question about the contest
Hi!
Does anyone know how we are to arrive at the 5,000 word count for the first chapter? Is this computer word count? Or, should we use the formula of multiplying average number of words per page X the total pages?
Thanks so much!
Georgie...
Everything is in computer count now. Just makes it much easier for everyone.
Hope that helps,
Dee

Word Count
Georgie - I think that is the maximum words but you can have less.
Good luck with your entry!
Thanks!
Thanks for the quick reply! I appreciate it.

And now I can see that this is the line I should be targeting.. modern heat is right up my alley! much more so then the regular presents......it's a younger, fresher line I think!

Writing for Presents
Hi everyone
This contest has created such a lot of interest - I don't envy the editors who have to read through all the entries.
I just wanted to say that i'm going to be writing some posts on writing for Presents over on my own blog - so if you're still working on your submission, some of those might help a bit. Of course, I'll be talking about classic Presents, not the Modern Heat stories.
It's a real challenge to write a first chapter that grabs the reader by the throat and holds on tight! - I know, I've written - er 54 of them - and some worked so much better than others. So I want to say Good Luck to everyone who is entering the contest
And a special Hi and
to my lovely Dee! Hi slavey!

Thanks, Kate!
Hi, Kate,
Thanks for offering advice on writing for Presents on your blog. I have always enjoyed your stories. I've written my synopsis for my entry, and I completed a detailed character interview for my heroine. Up next is a chat with my hero. I just hope he's as forthcoming as my heroine was!
Thanks again!
Georgie
Anyone else still working on their entry?
I noticed several comments from people who have already submitted their entries. I'm still writing mine. Anyone else still working on theirs?
Georgie
Georgie
I am still working on mine. I can't decide between two, and I know I could enter both, but hate to do since only one is complete. The other might be finished by the 14th, but with tax season, it is going to be hard.
Good luck!
Betty
Good luck to you, too! Are your stories targeting classic Presents or Modern Heat? Mine is geared toward the classic Presents.
Georgie
Georgie
One is targeted to Classic, and one to the Modern Heat. I have tried submitting to classic before and always get form R's. I believe I also got an R from Modern Heat.
The one for Modern Heat is the one I am not sure about. I will probably wait another week before submitting my entries. When are you sending yours in?
Betty
This is my first attempt at writing a Presents. (I have been reading them for many years.) I'm really trying to figure out where my voice fits.
I doubt I will submit my entry before the end of the first week of February.
Best wishes!
Georgie

I'm just working on my synopsis right now and then I'll submit.....good luck Mary! I'm targetting the modern heat....I picked up a couple and loved them!

I'm still working on mine
I read a lot of Presents in the past month( those one click ebook bundles are great!) and found some new to me auto buy authors. I even took notes!
While I read the occasional Presents, I was most familiar with SIM, Nocturne and Intrigue so I felt I should immerse myself in the line before attempting the synopsis.
My entry will be there before the deadline, but not too much before!
Becca Furrow~Pure Escapism
Pondering Entering
I may enter but it depends on if my heroine (whose Latino) would be a no-no. I may direct it at Desire though cause I don't recall any truly ethnic heroines.
Good luck to all those who have entered and are planning on entering.
Good Luck!
Good luck to everyone entering the contest. I have read presents for years and do love them. I only receive form R's but my last one had a lot of humor in it and that is usually a no-no. I had to write it though!
Waving at Becca!
Heroines
Candy - there are no rules about the ethnicity of your heroine - if your writing was good enough and the story was told wonderfully that would matter more.
I have written a couple of Spanish heroines (in The Spaniard's Inconvenient Wife and Bound By Blackmail) and both were very successful. And Michelle Reid had a heroine who was (I think) half Indian in Marriage on the Rebound. And I think there were more though I can't recall titles exactly. So there is scope for different types of characters - I know of some interesting new nationalities of heroes coming up for example. Just because there are not many of them doesn;t mean that the line is closed against them.
The answer will be that it's all in the execution. The nationality of your heroine will not be a reason why your book would fail if you have the passion between the hero and the heroine - and the intensity of the conflict that a Presents novel demands.
My advice to you as a writer would be to consider why you want your heroine to be whatever sort of nationality she is - whether English, Spanish, Latino - of whatever. My Spanish heroines needed to be Spanish to make part of the conflict work - their family upbringing and the society in which they'd lived affected and developed their personalities to make them who they were and that contributed to the conflict with their heroes - but their nationality wasn't part of the conflict - if you see the difference.
So if your heroine's background lets you create her more strongly and gives more reason for the conflict so that you can write her well - the only way an editor will judge the result will be on whether she thinks it works well or not. So yes, it's all in the execution.
Hope this is of some help

12 Point Guide To Writing Romance
I am working on my synopsis
I am working on my synopsis and need to know if the syn is double spaced or single spaced. I'm sure that I read somewhere that syn's are single spaced......
Jules
www.julianastone.com
Kate - Thanks
I write my characters that way because that's how they come to me. It's what I've longed to see for so long as a reader, that I want my characters to reflect me and my world. I suppose I can write a caucasian or european heroine but it wouldn't be true to me or my writing style and I'm afraid it would come across as awkward.
As I stated in the other thread, the race/heritage of my heroine isn't the conflict but the romance is. But it's not something that's going to be ignored or glossed over like the perverbial "pink elephant" in the room.
And you're right it's about their upbringing and experiences not about any supposed racial conflicts. I'm not writing a book on race relations. It's about love, relationships and above all romance and passion between two people.
Now, that's not to say that it's heavy handed or overbearing or on everypage. But there are some slight cultural differences that can make for interesting minor conflict and for funny or interesting scenes to show how the characters interact, get along, grow in their relationship and get to know each other.
Did that make any sense?
And I thank you for your advice and words of wisdom. I'm not trying to be difficult just trying to make sense of things. And as I said in the other post, I haven't seen a heroine or a presents like I described in a long time.
Synopsis
Candy - you do make sense and I think that with your focus firmly on the romance then it will be 'all in the execution' - write your best, understand the characters and the emotional conflict between them and focus on that. Good luck
Jules, over on the I heart Presents blog here you'll see that editors Suzanne Clarke and Jenny Hutton give you advice on writing a synopsis. They don't put any emphasis on how it is to be spaced - because the things you tell them in the synopsis are more important than single or double spacing. They do say :
Last, but by no means least, keep it short! No more than 2 sides of A4. This should be sufficient to showcase your story. Challenge yourself, can you sum it up in just one exciting paragraph?
( A4 paper is like regular US 8 1/2″ by 11″ paper; it’s a little bit longer and narrower. There’s usually a default on the page setup of Word programs that allows you to select A4 so you can see how much text you can cram onto it!)
You can write it single spaced but that would make it difficult to read and would defeat the point the eds are making about keeping it short - they want the exciting and emotional developments not a formatting exercise. There are no rules that a synopsis should be single spaced.
These points they make should help you

2nd place in a small state-wide competition
Hello
I've just registered and logged in for the first time and I'm so excited! I'm impressed by everyone, especially the editors and published authors, being so willing to offer advice and help.
I've read the rules and looked over the posts and I may have missed this, but I haven't seen a definite answer with regard to entering a manuscript that has won anything before. I placed 2nd in a small state-wide competition and need to know if that disqualifies the manuscript, because if it does, I had better get writing!
Thanks to all of you!
Anne Lillian
I believe...
you can use any original piece of work that hasn't been published anywhere. A contest shouldn't count, I don't believe.
Best of luck!

Anne Lillian -
Like Dee, I'd understand the rules as meaning that any unpublished manuscript can be entered as long as it's suitable for Presents.
You contest entry hasn't been published anywhere else, has it so I think you can get on with that polishing and submit.
