Sexiest Heroes?

colby.jpg

As I embark upon writing my new Blaze this week, a mini-series about Texas Rangers for 2009, I am asking the question I ask often (and perusing a little eye candy for inspiration, as you can see): What makes a hero sexy? I love Colby, the hero pictured here, from Numb3rs, more and more because he's a rescuer -- I love guys who are willing to go to the limit to help others.

Considering all the different lines here at Harlequin, readers obviously prefer different kinds of heroes -- the domineering, powerful Presents heroes, the complex, thoughtful heroes of Superromance, or the hot, irresistible men of Blaze. But what is it about a hero that makes your heart flutter or makes you really fall in love with the guy? Are you an Alpha or a Beta gal? What hero qualities scream "sexy" to you?

For me, I have always been attracted to Blaze heroes because there is such a variety available -- they can be strongly alpha, like my hero Daniel, in Untouched, or more like the guy next door, like Rafe in my recent Christmas Blaze, Talking in Your Sleep. The hero of my July 2008 Blaze anthology story, No Reservations, Joel, is sort of a cross between the two -- an alpha, definitely, but not as hard-edged as Daniel. Honestly, I find both of these men sexy for different reasons, though Rafe is more my cup of tea. So now I have to decide what kind of man I'll make my Ranger out to be. . .I definitely have some ideas.

I was very struck by the two heroes Wendy Roberts had in her book that I just finished reading Remains of the Dead, Zack and Kent -- Zack was so mild-mannered at first, but he seemed to just take on so much "power" as the story grew, so much personality, that I really fell for him -- he maintains just enough mystery that it drew me in and made me really want to get to know him and to have Sadie end up with him. Zack had a steady presence -- you knew he'd be there for you, he was. . well, dependable sounds boring, but really, eye candy aside, what's sexier than a man you know will be there for you, no matter what?

Kent. . .he had his charms too, and he was so much easier, more accessible -- but in a way, that puts him out of the running. I think I like a hero with layers, and a little mystery about him and Kent definitely had some character flaws that weren't as attractive -- not a dependable guy. Then again, he was being loyal to his family, and that's an attractive quality.

Right now, I'm reading Patricia Briggs's Iron Kissed, and trying to choose, like Mercy, between Adam and Sam...tough choice! Though I think I would probably lean toward Adam at this point. . .

Do you like having more than one hero to choose from in a book? What turns you off about a hero? As I ponder my current hero, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the topic. . . Who are your favorite heroes, and why?

*Jaw Drop...!*

HOLY COW!!
I was intrigued by the title, but the picture is... *drool* ... Hoo mama!

As to what makes a hero for me; hmmm, first and foremost they have to have the personality of someone that cares... the guys who, while very strong on the outside, don't have issues with being vulnerable to those that matter to them.
I do have to admit to having a certain.. uh... *Fondness* for guys with a great build... but please not the overblown muscle-man type.  The long, rangy cowboy type works for me too.  And the biggest thing is that whatever their body type, it works all together.

I'm really, really a fan of the good guy (and sometimes the not-so-good good guy) that believes in looking after others.  Not necessarily just the military, cop, firefighter, rescue guys ~ but anyone that believes that his attributes allow him to look out for those that can't for themselves.  Nurse? Businessman?  You bet... as long as the attitude and caring are there, he's a hero in my eyes.  ('Course the drool factor sure doesn't hurt either... Embarassed *bad Kathy... bad!*)

Drooling as I eat lunch and stare at Colby....

I have to say I think Blaze and Intrigue men are the best, the domineering and often arrogant Presents men my least likeable.  My sexiest heroes are those men who are multi-dimensional - you enjoy discovering the many layers of them as you read the book.  They're dependable, loyal, brave, kind, sensitive - they don't even have to be drop dead handsome - although it is nice to look at the cover and imagine!Wink

Lynn

LOL Kathy

Yeah, I think that pic is kinda jaw-dropping, too -- it was actually the mental model for Rafe (Talking in Your Sleep) and so I keep it in my picture file and take it out frequently, LOL -- Happy to share.

Hi Sadhbh!

Lynn, I agree, though those domineering heroes are obviously very hot, judging by how successful the lines are -- I have to say, I like a layered hero too -- maybe if they are domineering and pushy, but we get to see they have more to them than that, or their motivations for being that way are clear, then it makes them more likable? Being eye candy doesn't hurt, but I agree, it has to be more than that, and frankly, a guy who isn't classically attractive can become extremely sexy when he's brave, confident, competent, skilled, kind, and smart. And they can be the most interesting, too.

My Texas Ranger is being made to model for a sexy calendar, though (American Heroes) so he has to be physically attractive, but I hope I can work some of these other more layered qualities into him, as well...I would think a lot of men in rescue/protection careers would be somewhat domineering -- they know their work and how to get it done, and they have to make decisions fast, they can't always be easygoing about it, so they would have an edge... I like that, too...

Smart and funny = Sexy

Hi Sam,

I like my heroes smart and funny. Loyalty, dependability, and the creativity to think of and execute a romantic gesture are also admirable qualities.

Alpha heroes who are impatient or domineering are my least favorite men and I won't read about them. (I'm quite sure the feeling would be mutual. Most of the alpha romance heroes would toss me out of bed before we got to second base. Wink)

I think one of the things I like best about the more easy going heroes is the delicious shiver I feel when they get to that line they won't cross and then they take a stand. Watching a mild-mannered man stick in defense of his woman, his family, someone's honor, whatever--I just love that.

As for looks, I prefer tall, lean, and athletic. But I think on the Supers board last year we agreed many readers imagine the characters differently than how they're described on the page. I know I do this. I sometimes avoid looking at the cover image if it disrupts my happy little fantasy place where all men resemble Johnny Gage. Wink

Interesting topic,

Ellen

Oh, I enjoy this too -- a hero definitely can't be a wuss -- even a nice guy has to have backbone, bravery, confidence... a big yes there. :) Although what can be really interesting is when you have alphas who are big with the bluster, but who are really these nice guys underneath it all... and then the reasons why they are so tough on the outside can be great for storytelling... and getting through that outer shell... yum. :) Like a Tootsie Pop, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and delicious all over... ;>

Tough is a-okay

Hi Sam,

You're right. I don't mind a tough guy at all. One of my favorites of all time is Davey Dempsey from Faking It by Jenny Crusie.

I'm with you on the layers, in fact, as a storyteller, I think the layers are vital. We all know they're going to get together in the end, right? So the journey is the point and the layers keep the journey interesting.

One final point about a different kind of layer...my favorite TV show, Supernatural, is about 2 very hot brothers who are practically always dressed in at least 4 layers. Having done careful study of the Winchester brothers, I can definitely state with assurance that layers are sexy as hell. Laughing

i LOVE bad boys

mmm...i really like that picture tooTongue out

i like dangerous heroes.  bad boys.  the kind of guy that may scare me in real life.  the loner.  but of course, he has to be really hot!  dark and handsome.  i love the idea of a tough guy exterior and then inside a heart of gold who will do anything for the people he loves.

i love the idea of a hero that has had a rocky road and put a good shell around himself, only to have the heroine break it down and get inside!

i have to say, when i think of a hero, my mind always goes to the hero in Christine Rimmer's "The Midnight Rider Takes a Bride".  i can't remember his name.  it's been years since i read that book.  but he was dark, drove a Harley and would do anything for his kid brother.  i had such a crush on him...i guess i still kinda do! Laughing

My ideal hero...

Is Duncan MacLeod,  from Highlander: The series (portrayed by hunky Adrian Paul- you will see his pic in my profile).

i dont know if you are familiar with the show, but Duncan MacLeod is immortal. He was born in the Highlands of Scotland in 1592 (?).

The series takes place present day (or the 1990's), but something or someone will remind him of an event in the past, and he will have a flash back to different time periods.

The show has lots of action (sword fights, martial arts). But it is about much more than that.  It is about love, honor and loyalty...friendship.

Duncan has a code of honor that he lives by.  He is always ready to save a damsel in distress and is always there for his friends...he is strong, and sensitive. He is loyal and brave.

But Duncan has a hard time seeing things in shades of gray.  Something is right or its wrong.   Not willing to compromise his code of honor, gets him in trouble sometimes.

He was born a warrior, the son of the clan cheiftan.  He was raised to lead and to protect his people. after over 400 years, he cant shake it.

I have read some contemporary romance novels, that are set in Scotland, where Duncan MacLeod is mentioned.

And oh....Adrian will be making an appearance at the Romantic Times booklovers convention on April 19th.  I wont be able to go, but it sounds fun.

An other type of hero, is the "Anti-Hero".  The guy with questionable morlas. He would rather not get involved. would like to think he is above all the pettyness and thinks of himself as a rebel, a loner. But ends up doing the right thing in the end.

I think that sums up the character of Methos. Methos is a character from Highlander, portrayed by Peter Wingfield.

Methos is 5,000 years old.  He has survived all these years by being wiley and devious...keeping his head down and is presently known as Adam Pierson to the world at large. Only a few people know his real idententy.  He prefers to be a myth, that way nobody will come looking for him.  he will often do his good deed and disapear for a while (kinda like the Lone Ranger).

There are times you arent really sure whose side Methos is on.  On one hand, you know he would never betray Duncan, on the other hand, he has very strong survival instincts.   He will do what ever it takes to survive.

I watched Numb3rs last night....I do like Colby.  He is cute and loveable...but tough and heroic.  I also like geeky Charly.  He is cute in a nerdy way.

Terri
Got Books?

I love Numb3rs! Although I

I love Numb3rs! Although I have to admit I pay more attention to them actually solving the crime than the characters themselves (I'm one of those Crime Show buffs-- Laws & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Criminal Minds, CSI, etc.)...but I actually like the Fed brother (the math guy's bigger brother) but I can't for the life of me remember their names!

Anyways, my ideal guys is -- I'll admit it -- the stereotypical 'Tall, Dark, & Handsome'....as in he should be able to walk in with all his dark n' sexy charisma and be a good mix of tough-bad-boy-ness...but he should also be able to show a tender side to those he loves...he has to have honour and integrity (as in he won't lie and his word is binding), but he shouldn't be afraid to take a walk on the wild side every now n' again...I want him to have a good sense of humour, but not so much that he can turn every situation into a joke....he has to subtle...

Okay, I know, I'm picky about my heroes....I have so many more specifications, but I've spent time thinking about the Should-Bees and recognizing what I like when I read...Laughing

Okay, now you can laugh at me Smile

Gelle

Yes, Don!

I love Don (the Fed brother) --he's so tough! LOL It's Rob Morrow, who also played Joel in Northern Exposure, and that was the reason I started watching Numb3rs, but Colby has slowly pulled equal. ;) Here's a little trivia for my dedication to RM, though -- the hero in my upcoming July Blaze is Joel, and may have looks that are loosely based RM, and a proposal for another book is name Don, also loosely based on you know who. LOL A little behind the pages trivia...

I like anti-heroes, too -- in Moonlight, I like Josef almost more than Mick, and in books, I like a character like Wyn in the Myron Bolitar series, or Eric in Charlaine Harris -- I don't know if I'd want to date them, LOL, but I find them really interesting. Maybe sorta bad guys are more complex than good guys? I don't know... I think you can find complexity in good guys, like Colby, who inspired Rafe in my December Blaze... it's not the same kind of dark edge, but they have their own shadows... Don is a mix. He's kind of dark, and reminds me a lot of my character Ian in Fascination, though I didn't watch Numb3rs then -- though when I started watching the show, I was struck by how much Don reminded me of my Ian.

Anyway, here's a pic of Don (RM) for fun... :)

holy wow! look at those

holy wow! look at those chocolate yummy eyes! Sorry, I never realized how pointy his ears were! aha, sorry...Anyways, yes, I think I like the bad guys more when they can show they really are just honourable characters who can show a streak of tender....

Can you tell me of any books like that? Where the bad guy is really tough, and bad-like, but turns out to be a good guy? I don't think I've read any like that, but I would really like to....I don't mean like undercover cops or anything, but a real honest-to-goodness bad guy who can be good n' tender....I haven't actually come across any like that...Any suggestions?

theresa_b...

I read Christine Rimmer's book The Midnight Rider Takes a Bride just a few months ago and I agree 1000%... I LOVED him.  I just checked my review from last year and his name is Jed Ryder and he was very much a typical "bad boy" with the dark good looks ~ with which I've always been a fan! Yummy....!

Gelle...

I'm so with you on the shows that you like.  I've always had a thing for cops and the like; the good guy that looks after the little guy... or whatever.
Another one that I used to watch all the time, this was a few years ago now and kind of in the same vein, was The Equalizer with Robert Woodward.  He wasn't dark or anything but man, if he was looking after someone, you didn't mess with him!
Numb3rs is a great show... and I love Don ~ thank you Sam! ~ aka Rob Morrow; his looks are perfect... all that dark and majorly handsome going for him.
As for other anti-heroes, have you read any of Anne Stuart's ICE series?  The heroes in each of these books can definitely be termed as an anti-hero ~ and they're fantastic stories as well.  At least I love 'em.

bad guys

Sometimes, the bad guy in a book or movie is much more interesting.

The good guy/hero, is often hemed in with rules and morals....where as the bad guy has no such hang ups. He can be as bad as he wants to be.

But the bad guy cant just be one demensional...he cant just go around being bad for no reason.  There has to be a logical motivation.  He has to be (if the roles were switched) just as honorable as the good guy.

Sometimes a good guy, like Bravehart...gets just as many people killed as the bad guys....people will follow the hero anywhere, blindly...right to their deaths.

Sometimes the bad guy steels show, like Jack Nicholson's Joker, or Alan Rickman in Diehard and/or Robinhood.

And yes, I like Eric way more better than "good guy" bill in Charlene Harris' Southern Vampire series. he is much more interesting and has way more layers to his personality. You are never quite sure where he stands.

Even a friend of Duncan MacLeod, calls him a Boyscout.  Honor and duty before anything else.

Terri
Got Books?

Yes, the anti-hero

Yes, the anti-hero definitely has to have reasons for his actions, or something else we can relate to -- thinking of Spike, early in the Buffy seasons, he was a bad guy, but he was funny, and we knew he could love, via Dru -- so that made him evem more likable. Maybe they are sexy because they are a little dangerous, or because if they are willing to break the rules in general, they might be able to break the rules in more interesting ways *G* The love scenes with Spike and Buffy were never the tame ones she shared with Angel...

I just noticed the comment about RM's pointy ears! ROTFL... Oh dear... Romulan? LOL

Off til tomorrow...

I agree, a good motivation

I agree, a good motivation is key otherwise he'd just be a rebel-without-a-cause, and that would make him seem like he's just trying to get some good chick attention...

I'm sorry to say I never watched the Buffy series...I did when I could, but I don't think I ever got the chance or had the time, so I couldn't really follow what was happening...Now that I'm hearing about this Spike fellow though, I'm seriously wishing I had been following it somehow....

and RMs ears are pointy, but at least they don't take away from his nice macho looks Tongue out...except for the fact that in the picture he makes me think of a handsome troll....

(P.S. the picture of Colby at the top makes me think of those sexy firemen we always envision (but are strangely absent from out lives)...He should be wearing a nice fireman get-up in that pic I think Wink)

Gelle

Gelle, yes!

That's exactly why he stuck in my head as a mental model for Rafe in Talking in Your Sleep -- my character isn't a fireman, but an EMT/ambluance driver, and that picture just clicked for me...

If he came in to save me, though, I think I would either have to fake a heart attack or have to get injured more often, LOL Mout to mouth? ;)  LOL I am so bad for a happily married woman...

heroes

At this moment in time my favorite heroe would be Booth from the tv series Bones...........love his looks, he has layers.......funny....sexy and tender with his son....

As for books any tall dark handsome cowboy does it for me.

Lisa

I like Booth too...

But what kind of name is Seeley? Sounds like a matress.

I liked Spike on Buffy....we know he is capable of love and being nice...we saw his sensitive side..but we cant forget who and what he is.  his true nature will allways be right under the surface, and will attack when feel threatened.

Like having a pet wolf....wolves are not dogs, and we cant expect them to be...once you start thinking of them as pets/tame/domesticated, is when you get hurt.  You need to respect but keep your guard up, or you will get bit.

That is the same with Spike or any other "ferral" being. Human, Vamp, or animal.

Terri
Got Books?

omg yes! I forgot about

omg yes! I forgot about Bones! the guy in that is B-U-I-L-T!...I saw an episode once where he went undercover and entered street fighting and he was fighting some dude....VERY nice posing I thought...

Gelle

as for the name seeley

I would not be calling him that........it would be Darlin' as in the way Conway Twitty says it in a song.   LOL

Lisa

My Hero

would have to be the strong silent type I think. The guy that you know has tons of thoughts about things, but has trouble sharing them. I love it when he opens up to the heroin and lets her and us in. I think it's more about getting into his head, understanding what makes him tick than anything else. Looks of course play a big part, but I"m one of those women who look first to the heart then to the shell.

And I am married to a cop, Sam, so yes, they are definately Alpha. Mine is the strong silent type, but he has a wicked sense of humor that I fell in love with first, 15 years ago. Its funny because he and I were just talking about his attributes for an upcoming routine psych test. I described him as dependable, honest, hardworking and loyal for his good sttributes. His bad ones are he's slow to trust, though he gives people the benefit of the doubt. He demands proof of everything before he takes action and sometimes this slows him down. It's just because he want's to make sure he's doing the right thing. He's very reserved, quiet and keeps his emotions close to the chest, unless he's with me, then I know everything.

He once told me that if he died I'd have to give his ulegy because no one else, not even his best friend since he was 10 would know him well enough to do it. I've found through association that most officers are like this. And all of them have a strong sense of protection, they need to feel like they are protecting innocent people and the ones they love or they feel like they've failed. Talk about layers! LOL

Anyway, hope that helps :)

Liv

I'll be alright, they make pills for that...

Liv - holy wow, I'd say

Liv - holy wow, I'd say lucky you! I would like to say that I'm one of those people who look at the inside of a person first, but I'm not...their looks will attract me, and if I find that I don't like what kind of person they are on the inside, then I'll be turned off...I won't find them so good-looking if they're not good people...(that I know for sure from experience...I used to find this guy I worked with very good-looking -- as did many of the women I worked with -- but when I discovered how arrogant he was, I just couldn't see him as good-looking anymore)

I used to think I was superficial (and I still am to some degree) but I changed my mind when I found myself attracted to guys who I didn't at first think were attractive, just because they had a great personality...I think that a gal can find a not-so-handsome guy attractive just because they're great guys...he grows on you...

Gelle

Gelle

I totally agree you can fall for a guy that's not so good looking simply becasue of what he's made of. I love my hubby dearly, but I still find myself thinking that a man is attractive once I see his personality. It's common I think, after all what married woman doesn't drool over Brad Pitt right? and men do the same thing....no harm, no foul.Laughing

Hugs, Liv

I'll be alright, they make pills for that...

Agreed

Sorry I've been absent -- been trying to keep up with life. :)

A guy doesn't have to be classically good looking, or even good looking at all to be sexy and attractive. A lot of it has to do with their charisma, confidence, etc. Confidence is sooo attractive -- but not the obnoxious kind.

And yeah, we're happily married, but not dead. LOL. If you guys haven't check out the Superromance thread, you should -- we've been adding up the posts with pictures of hot guys, LOL. I think we hit everyone, but you might see some we missed <G> Or feel free to add them here.

One guy who I think is not really "handsome" but is still sexy and attractive is the guy on Bones, the lab tech, Hodgins, played by TJ Thyne -- he's cut in this picture, but on the show he's a real nerd, and his hair was messier, etc...He seems short, and nerdy, but his character is very smart, quirky, and confident (and rich! LOL), and very attractive for all of that...

love Bones...

and both Seely and Hodge are hunks!  Especially like Hodge's sense of humor - wicked good!

Lynn

WOW

I am really surprised nobody mentioned Roarke. I probably don't even have to say In Death series. He is gorgeous, sensitive, caring, would kill in a minute to protect Eve, he is thoughtful - he buys her clothes, eases her way when he can, works with her when she lets him and is wicked hot in bed. My hero.

Adrian Paul - The HighlandIander - I have met him also at a Convention - He is more gorgeous in person and sensitive and caring and protective in the show.

Also have to agree about Seley - David Boreanaz - in Bones who was also Angel in both Buffy and in the Angel spin off.

The pic of Colby is really hot. I love him and Rob Morrow's characters but also Charlie.... he is not good at people but he tries. Another great atribute of any hero... HE TRIES ! ! !

I hated Joseph in Moonlight but love Moonlights hero Alex O'Loughlin as Mick St. John. He is not your normal vamp. He cares about the reporter and his friends and is not into just sucking blood from humans

I just read Mia Zachary's Another Side of Midnight and Cameron Stone was a hunk of burning love - he left her and didn't show up for 2 1/2 months and knew that she was the ONE. He spends the book doing what he has to do but trying to win her back... I guess I like the part of a hero that wants to treat his lady right, is sensitive to her needs and at least tries... so many guys just don't try.

Yes I am a readalholic and I don't want the 12 step program!!!

Hey JayeJean

Thanks for resurrecting the thread. *G*

I like Roarke (who doesn't?) though I can't say he's my favorite -- he's a little too Alpha for me sometimes -- though I sure wouldn't mind being his best buddy or little sister, LOL. Well, maybe not little sister -- imagine how difficult dating anyone would be???

I do like Josef (and Mick) though Josef is a strange one for me, too -- but have been watching Veronica Mars, which I am thankful to have found through his acting on Moonlight, since I'm really enjoying VM. And I think he plays really sexy characters, though that's a little disturbing on VM since they are young (the actor is only 27, I think -- way too young for me! LOL), but I love his acting, his characters -- they have some kind of intensity or edge that I really like. He's definitely the more unusual choice for me, too, though.

Love DB. ;)

You have been to Highlander conventions?  Which ones?  I have been to several.   I have met Adrian several times (that is his picture here on my post). I have met several cast and crew members of the show. they are awesome.

In October, I went to Vancouver for a Highlander convention. And this coming November, I will be going to Vegas with the Peter Wingfield Fan Club (Methos).

The cast and crew of the show are great.  I always love meeting them.

Highlander Convention

I went to one in Denver ..... I would say somewhere around 2001 or there abouts.  It was wonderful. He is gorgeous and accomadating.  We talked for several minutes when he signed my magazine which I have no clue where that is right now.  It was when the series was in full swing.

Highlander Conventions

I mostly go to Los Angeles base cons, but in the past few years (i didnt make it to Denver).  I went to Vancouver last year with HLWW (Highlander Worldwide).

With the Peter Wingfield Fan Club (PWFC) I have been to Vancouver, Memphis, and Philadelphia.   this november we are going to Las Vegas.

They are fun, and you meet all kinds of people from all over the world....plus you get to see all of the Highlander related folks.
