Given the hundreds of romances I’ve read, I cannot recall one romance in which the hero or heroine was left-handed. Have you had the same experience? Is it just me?
I would think that an author would like to have some characters, now and then, that are left-handed and face some of the frustrations of left-handers living in a right handed world. This would give the character more humanness and add more realism to his or her portrayal. There are also built-in characteristics associated with left-handedness which might prove interesting in character development.
Is there any reason why left-handers seem to be left out of romances? Or, am I missing something? Reading the wrong books?
Just curious, in Tulsa.
Thanks,
Vince

I've read lots .........
just don't ask for examples, as this is a detail I'm not about to remember ... it's one of those "in one eye and out the other" type details
they've been written ..... I'm very surprised you haven't read one

I'm a leftie! :)
I recently read a book by Annmarie McKenna. The hero is a twin and is right-handed but his twin brother is his mirror image and left-handed. Haven't read the brother's book yet but I plan to get to it soon. Another one...THE WRONG MIRROR by Emma Darcy also has mirror image twins. One was left-handed, the other right-handed.

Maybe Left-Handers Notice this better
Hi:
I can say I do not remember reading even one romance where the hero or heroine was left-handed. However, I am right-handed and maybe I just never notice this. I think a left-hander would notice better than I would. It would make sense in a twin book to have a way to tell the twins apart if they were identical.
Sometimes in mysteries it is important to know if someone is right or left handed. Of course, it is not common for characters to be said to be right-handed either.
I'd sure like for someone to name a book I've read so I could check my memory. I have a database of about 700 romances I've read so I could compare it.
Thanks,
Vince

I am a lefty,
I always notice other lefties, and always comment.
But I have never noticed "handedness" in books.

left handed
I would notice. I am a leftie. Actually I am ambidextrous but I do write with my left hand only.

Ambidextrous
I've never notice that in a book but then I can't think of a reason why it would come up. ??? Maybe if the h/H hurt their hand and it happened to be the left hand. But I can't think of why it would be mentioned unless it was a twin book or the mystery like you said.
How do you know if you are ambidextrous? I am right handed. I know I can not write with my left hand because I have tried. I don't throw a ball well with my left hand either. But I can do other things. The other day I was writing out a receipt for someone and I was using the calculator with my left hand. I didn't notice until the man said "pretty nifty trick". I was confused until he pointed to my left hand adding things up while I wrote with my right. Does that make me a little bit ambidextrous? Just curious.

Well...I say I am a lefty,
But there are somethings I do with my right hand....
I throw with my right hand...serve volleyball right handed.
But I write and eat with my left.
In my Stage Combat class I am one of 2 lefties in class. I hold my sword in my left hand, which throws people off at first, then they get it.

re: lefties
This is a good question...I see handedness discussed sometimes in mysteries, as a few people have already mentioned, but rarely in other types of books. It would be a nice small character thing to toss in, because of the frustrations sometimes involved...can openers, grr!
Terri--I used to fence sabre and it was great being a lefty for the same reasons. It really threw people off, and it gave my team a chance to practice against a lefty.
sword play
Lady_Amalthea -I have done very little fencing....I dont like it as much as sword play.
I was at a fan convention for Highlander: The Series, and met a woman who is a fight choreographer. She holds Stage Combat classes here in LA. So I signed up for classes. It is fun and good exercise.

handedness
I read a historical years ago in which the heroine was lefthanded. Although I have since lost the title, I do recall this specific detail because in the story the step mother had used the girl's being left handed as proof of her supposed "taint" and therefore it was a convenient excuse to punish her.
lol @ "in one eye and out the other" Katherine, I'll have to remember that.

I Read That Story, Too!
Hi Lorie:
You are right. I read that story too. It may have been a special needs story. Margaret Daley and Darlene Graham wrote special needs stories. It could also have been a Betty Neels book because she has had many mistreated heroines. It was a very strong story. I mean emotional. If you think of the name, I'd like to read that book again.
Thanks,
Vince

Sadly I completely suck at book and author names and titles. I remember plot points, how I felt about the book and sometimes the cover, and that's it.
I do seem to recall it took place on some sort of southern plantation.
