My, oh my! I am having so much fun with this thing! I have already downloaded a total of 19 books to my Kindle off of the Amazon website and I love how it reads. You can change the font size if your eyes get tired, there are a total of 6 different sizes. The thing automatically bookmarks the page you left off on if you want to change books. It has an option for Audio books, but I haven't looked into that yet, for some reason I like to read the story instead of listen to it. There is an automatic dictionary on the Kindle, and if you don't know the meaning of a word in a line, all you have to do is select that line, go to look up, and it will list the description of every word in that line for you. If you didn't have a computer in front of you, you can shop for books directly on the Kindle, and the search features are so easy to use. I love the mini QWERTY keyboard. I am so used to the sequences of the traditional computer keyboard that it is nice to keep using the same thing. The Kindle is extremely light in weight and I have no problem holding it in either my left or right hand. If I read the Owner's Manual correctly, the Kindle uses actual Ink and Paper Particles inside. I actually think it is true because the screen really does look like there is paper and ink under the glass. Whenever you change a page it will black out instead of blank out to re-assimilate the ink and paper particles. There is no backlight, so when you read at night you will need a lamp on, but at the same time, you don't have a harsh light going directly at your eyes when you are reading your Kindle. As you might be able to tell, I have a lot of good things to say about my Kindle and I so love it. Now my only problem is getting through all of my TBR pile so that the remainder of my reading can be done electronically
My Kindle Rating on a 1-10 scale: 10!!!!

Great!
Loving mine and getting more familiar with it all the time. I like that it so easy to take with you and can hold so many books. I have five loaded to mine and will be loading more soon. I have browsed the store on mine but it's black and white so I use the Computer to order books but they are still sent straight to my Kindle almost immediately. My kids gave me the perfect gift for Christmas. I'm so looking forward to vacation and leaving all that extra suitcase room for souvineers instead of having to pack all those paperbacks.

Great to travel with!
I am looking forward to that too. On my last vacation, even though I read only 4 books, I brought 8 with me to choose from because you never know what kind of mood you will be in for reading. I'm possibly traveling to Alberta Canada in March, so I'll be able to try the traveling thing then! Yay!!

Keep me posted
Keep me posted on anything new you learn. I'm very technology challenged. I need all the help I can get. My bag is already lighter as I was carting around two or three books everyday. My son says it has GPS capabitlities if you know how to use the browser. Told him he can check it out next time he's here. Thought that would be pretty cool.

OOOoohhhh GPS!!!
Now that is interesting! I didn't read that in the manual. I know that you can download anywhere because of the free wireless transfer, but I think anything outside of the Book shop on the internet you might be charged for. I will have to re-read the manual to check that out. Thankfully though I do have free GPS on my cell phone :)
My Husband is a techie geek and I think that after three years of marriage he is finally rubbing off on me technologically

The Price is Worth It!!!
After reading about it before I got it, I still would have saved up for it. I know the price can be a bit of a shock, but it is so worth it if you can save up for it.

I'm not considering one, yet, but
I'm excited that it's been developed. Are the books cheaper there than at other eBookstores? I wondered b/c of what the CEO said when it launched. I have a hard time paying $16 for an eBook (actually, I don't buy them at that price -- see, it's too hard for me!).
So, I'm hoping that the Kindle takes off and really gets the eBook solidified in the reading community and that it brings down the price of eBooks everywhere.
I'm so excited for both of you!

Does the Kindle only read kindle books? Or can you read PDF files on it?

Kindle info
ftworthmom - The majority of books that are tradeback and hardback are $9.99. There are a few that are above that mark, but the rest are regularly 20-30% off retail. It makes getting paperbacks a bit more affordable.
debiw781 - If I read correctly, for e-books purchased outside of the Kindle store, the format best read in download is through mobi-pocket. I don't recollect if PDF can be read or not. You would basically have to download it to your comuter first and then transfer it through a USB cable that is provided with the Kindle. I haven't tried it yet, but there are some eharlequin bundles I would like to purchase that aren't available on the Kindle bookstore. I will let you know if it works.

I am keeping this in mind
I have put this thread as a fave cause I want all the input you are putting here. Like Penn, I can't do it right now ... but....... I do want to get something like this for when I travel. I can't imagine not taking 10-15 books with me in the suitcase. Another possibility was mentioned in the blogs as a SONY book reader. I hope more people stop by that have either the Kindle or the Sony or other products so we get a lot of input.

I read how to do all that and told my son I want to load audilbes to mine so he will help me next time he's in. Sometimes it's just easier to listen when I need to do those mundane things. I read on Amazon that the wait is now about six weeks or more as they are so in demand. So hopefully that will bring the price of downloads down for everyone.

PDA's/Kindle/Sony
Hello All... I've spent the last two weeks delving into this.. I actually ordered the Kindle but just stopped the order and instead placed an order for a PDA. Why? Because I buy a lot of books that are protected and NOT through amazon. At first this didn't concern me, I figured I'd just upload them. And what was a few emails if I was able to bring the books every where with me? But after buying a few ebooks and tyring a few things out I discovered that I can't upload a protected doc to the Kindle.
That goes for Adobe or MOBI! So if I buy books directly from Harlquin... I can't read them on the Kindle. I was so disappointed. I can't tell you!
I looked into the Sony too... but ran into similar issues. In the end I like I said, I've bought a PDA - a My Pal a626 Ultra slim PDA. It does everything I wanted, like be wireless so I can make a purchase anytime, anywhere, for anything I want and works with ALL the ebook formats.(This is big... so many of the ebook readers out there aren't as compatible) The only thing it didn't have(but that I really wish it did) is the paper like screen of the Kindle or Sony. Sigh... I've been blogging about this for the past two weeks because I really wanted that Kindle. I just wish it did the rest of all I wanted besides having that lovely screen.
I see a couple others on here have a PDA of sorts? Do you guys like it? Does the small screen bother you?

I have a Dell Axim Pocket PC
I have a Dell Axim Pocket PC which does have a very small screen. But that's OK usulaly since I can change font size as needed. What I haven biggest problems with is glare. Even with the backlight on the lowest setting it can be without going dark, it gets to me after a while. But I manage pretty well in spite of that.

Shewolf0316 --
Thanks for answering!
I bought my PDA through Dell but they don't appear to have the Axim anymore. Not sure why. I'd actually gone there looking for it, I'd seen someone else refer to it as a good buy but its been taken off the list.
Anyhow, the guy I spoke with (the sales guy to whom I picked his brains for a very long time on this)recommended the My Pal and I've since then been pouring over the net and think it is the right one for me. I've just been a little concerned about that screen size. I guess I was really sold on the 'new' kind and size of screen that came with the Kindle.
I'm glad to hear that it doesn't bother you! I've been hoping to run into someone else who had a PDA and could give me personal feedback.
Thanks!

Wanted to add---
I'm sure Alwsoprano can verify this, but a couple of you talked about the PDF's or MOBI's and uploading bundles from Harlequin---
You can NOT upload either Adobe or Mobi if they are protected to the Kindle!!!
All forms of ebooks that come from Harlequin are protected!!!!
I know, I have emailed Harlequin on this because first I tried the email convert that the Kindle talks about with one of the books I'd bought in Adobe and was informed from Kindle that they can not convert protected files. I then bought five books in MOBI thinking I could upload those to the Kindle and wrote to Harlequin hoping to get my other books from them changed into a MOBI---Harlequin very nicely pointed out that it does say clearly in the Kindle description page that the Kindle is NOT compatible with uploading protected work in either Mobi OR Adobe.
Obviously I was very disappointed. I love buying the bundles and specials from Harlequin or Brava or any of these places. Essentially it meant the book had to be listed on the Kindle Amazon site if it was protected for me to read it on the Kindle.
Unprotected PDF's or MOBI's can be uploaded... I tried that and that does work. You can convert the PDF's yourself if they are not protected to MOBI and upload the story to the Kindle. But MOST of anything I buy is protected. I'm for the author having their work protected so its kind of a catch.
Anyhow, I just wanted to pass this on so that others don't get in the same bind I did or have expectations that aren't going to work. I think the Kindle is looking to be a great product... but has some gliches yet. Like I stated in another post, I wish it was a PDA with a Kindle screen.

Great information!
I've been thinking about a book reader but other than a bit of research I've not been too motivated - there are so many to choose from. I loved the reviews of the Kindle but, unfortunately, the wireless part doesn't work in Canada (something to do with our communications regulations.) Amazon's solution for Canadians was to download on your computer than transfer to the Kindle. Kind of defeats the purpose when the big attraction (and expense) is the wireless feature.
Has anybody tried the eBookwise? I have heard that you are limited to purchasing books from them too. So I guess that wouldn't work with eharl.
Well, this has whetted my appetite to seach for a new gadget. I still love my paper books but it would sure be nice to travel with something so small. 30 books can be a bit heavy!
I just bought a new gadget - a cutecat bar code scanner. I've finally decided on a book/library database and my project this year to is log all my books (2000+ I think!) This will keep me busy!

Some you can't get
It is aggravating that some you want you can't get but most of the Bestsellers you can and I can get enough to make me happy. I still like holding a colored book in my hand so I wouldn't want a reader for everything. I have downloaded some more eH from Amazon and guess will just do it that way. My favorite Harlequin authors I want the book anyway so that part doesn't bother me at all. Love the no glare on the Kindle it is easier on my older eyes. Enjoying this thread.

eBookwise and Palm PDA
We bo't my mom an eBookwise last year. We love it. ChrissieSue bo't one during their year-end sale and her initial reaction was less than stellar so you might go see her and see what she thinks now.
I use my dh's older Palm PDA. I like it fine. I was worried about the small screen b/c I'm a fast reader but it hasn't been a problem.
I wrote several blog entries last year during the challenge about my steps into the 21st century and when I get time, I'll copy them over to new blog entries and update them (for example, when we bo't my mom's eBookwise, I didn't consider one for myself b/c they didn't sell harlequins for it but now they do).

OH MY GOSH!!
I don't log on for a couple of days and everything comes flooding in!! I'm glad to hear that there are quite a few other ebook readers out there. **Yes, the docs have to be unprotected to download outside of the Kindle bookstore in both PDF and MOBI. That is the only problem I am finding. The prices for books are generally the same price or less than other ebook stores, I just wish I could get the extra 10% off that I do at eharlequin and get the bundles as well. Oh well! All I know is that my Hubby will go nutz if I buy too many more paperbacks. My TBR pile is rediculous.
Thank you all for responding! I think this is my first blog ever that has had this much response, and I am learning more and more as I go along. BTW - I know there was talk about GPS on the Kindle a while back, if I remember reading the manual correctly, there was no mention of GPS at all, so I don't think that is a Kindle feature.

I think I was on the mailing list for 16 months before it was discontinued. I'm also still waiting to see if there will be another book in the Pink Series. Palm TX and eBookwise
ElleJay led me here. What a great discussion. I talked about getting in to ebooks last year on my blog. In October, after much research, I choose to get the Palm TX. I was worried about the small screen but that has turned out not to be a problem. I love the size, the weight, the ease of download. I have Mobipocket, Adobe Reader, and Palm reader. I haven't figure out how to use the Adobe Reader yet. The Palm reader works well, especially the look-up dictionary feature. You can purchase extra font packages for it for $9.99. But it doesn't display the covers. The Mobipocket is the one I use most.
And I'd like to say thanks to eH customer service—before purchasing my Palm I had bought several titles in Adobe Reader to read on my lap top. They kindly changed those titles in my bookshelf to Mobi so that I could load them on my Palm. The Palm does so much and I was able to find it for $260 at Amazon from Beach Camera in NJ. List is over $300. Beach Camera sent the hard case with it, which is a $40 accessory, at no extra charge. The Palm has an MP3 player so you can do audio books. It has a picture/movie viewer. You can log on to the web if you're near a hot spot/wifi and you can do email. But I can't log on with my pass word to eH. The Palm syncs to your computer so your contact list is always the same on the Palm and your computer. You can set appointments and alarms to remind you, even if it’s turned off. There are a lot of second-party programs you can down load. I use Diet & Exercise Assistant daily. And games-I have Bejeweled on mine. They also have models with a phone.
I can't say a whole lot about the eBookwise yet. I've read one book and got over some of my initial concerns about it. I still think it's kind of heavy. I like the features but haven't taken the time yet to learn everything about it. I purchased it for the larger screen and I like the back lit screen. (I confess, I'm a tub reader, especially in winter, and I like having the room lights off. Someone on the ebook discussion suggested putting it in a zip lock bag and that's what I do with the Palm and the eBookwise.) I checked out the books eBookwise had for sale before I bought the reader and found several Harlequins, including two on my shopping list.
I meant to just post a brief description but when it comes to the Palm TX I can go on and on. I love it. I wouldn't be surpirsed if, in the future, Palm comes out with an eInk technology screen.
Thanks, ChrissieSue

And much, much more… (as they say)
Just a little more about the Palm TX (and other models). It has a calculator, a world clock with a world map showing day and evening. Tap anywhere on the map and it tells the time in the nearest big city. It has Microsoft Office which can be scynced with your computer. It has character recognition, which means you can write with the sylus and it becomes type. It has a pop up (on the screen) QWERTY keyboard. I've written several scenes for my current MS when they've come to mind and I'm not near my lap top. I can then up load them. You can view the screen in portrait or landscape mode. You can track your expenses, handwrite notes (like sticky notes), list tasks (to do lists). You can beam files to another Palm or your computer (I haven't tried this). It takes an SD card for more storage. I have a 2GB card. It's Bluetooth capable. The manual in preloaded so you can look up features whenever you like. AND… it has a full color, very fine image screen. Did I say I love this little computer?
SOLD!!
That sounds great - can it bake bread too? Question - can you adjust the font size? My eyes are getting older. (I even find the font size here a bit trying)

There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the pleasure is having lots to do and not doing it!
Yes
Yes - you can adjust the font, no - it can't bake bread!
The main font is similar to this but comes in two sizes and two weights, plain and bold.
The Office program has font sizes 10 to 72 pt. And seven fonts. It includes Word, Excell, PowerPoint and text, which can be read by other word processing programs.
Mobipocket has three fonts, sized 10 to 24 points. I haven't fiddled with that much as the 10pt is fine for me. I thought it would be too small, but I like having more words on the screen at one time. The page advance is instant without any blackout or whiteout or ghosting of the previous page. Then there's lots of preferences within Mobipocket, too. Sometimes the look up feature will freeze a page but when it does I just hit the bookshelf icon then go back to the book and it opens where I left off. I'll have to see if I can find out why it does that. Maybe because my dictionary isn't a full version. The battery will last most of the day unless you are on the web a lot. That takes more power. I charge mine over night, it actually takes about 3 hours to charge. I've had two minor crashes where I've had to press the reset button. I've read that if you have a major crash you have to do a hard restart and you will lose your info stored within the internal memory. So, save often to your computer, and save to the SD card if you're nervious. My ebooks are on my computer so if I lost them from the Palm I could redownload them.
Any other questions I'll be glad to answer, I might just learn something.
I have to sign off now…

I got it!
Hello Everyone!
I posted before here and wanted to share---my MyPal pda came! And I'm totally loving it!
First thing I did was get on and order from Harlequin one of their specials! Then I uploaded books from my computer -- in both adobe and mobi formats! Books that I couldn't put on my Kindle
because I'd bought them directly from Harlequin. Mobi is by far my favorite format for reading in ----you can alter so much, from background color, text color, font size, layout... I've also already tried out several of the other numerous features the pda has like the email, excel(though I don't actually need it), word(had to read a ms for a cp and it was wonderful not to have to stay stuck at the computer desk!) and a couple more. There are actually a ton of things on here that I don't know if I'll ever use but its cool that it only cost $280 and does all that!
So anyhow I just wanted to let everyone know I got it, am loving it and thank you for this discussion! It really helped me decide what to do when I realized I couldn't get my books on the Kindle. Or ever make another purchase directly from Harlequin on their specials! I still do wish that the screen was the size of the Kindle... but that's not because its hard to read.. (I thought it might be, but its easy to read and while reading I never think... oh I wish it was bigger) its because mentally I'm sold on the size of the Kindle.
The fact that my pda allows me to upload any format for reading and do a hundred other things totally out weighs that one lingering thought though.
I posted about my new toy over at my Hareqluin blog http://community.eharlequin.com/users/nicoler and it contains a picture of it and a link to where I bought it from Dell. So if anyone wants they can check it out. I spent weeks trying to decide what eReader to get, comparing everything and for me, this was the one.
Thanks again everyone!

Imagination... the magical whispers from within.
Now I'm confused!
Thanks Nicole - what to do? what to do?
Well, I guess I better get out there and do my own research to see what suits me the best. Since I'm in Canada the Kindle is out completely (thank goodness!) so right now its between the 2 PDAs.
I do appreciate all the information. I certainly wouldn't have thought to look into all the little extras the PDAs offer but I know I will use.

ElleJay, yes, that's the
ElleJay, yes, that's the same Palm I have. If that's the Canadian price then that's a good price.
I researched a lot of different readers on the web. Then I went to Office Depot where they had one plugged in and I spent a lot of time just fiddling with it with no store employees hanging over my shoulder. But their price was list and I figured I could find a better deal somewhere else so I headed to Best Buy. They had a display model but not plugged in and wanted over list price. That's when I started looking for a better price on the web.
Nicole, I never heard of the MyPal PDA in my research. Sounds like it does as much as the Palm for about the same price. I know you will enjoy it and get a lot of use out of it. When I consider how many books I can store on it, it makes me think twice about buying more paperbacks. Tho I still do, just not as many as before.
ElleJay, I just looked up
ElleJay, I just looked up the MyPal PDA. It looks really nice. You have a though decision to make. Try to find a place where you can handle them, that's the best way. If you look at the Palm Tungsten (less $$) be aware that the screen is much smaller.
I ordered the Case Logic PDA case that was on the page with the MyPal. My Palm came with a metal case, which is nice, but it's slippery and I've dropped it so many times the latch is now broken. I like the pocket on the inside of the CL case, too.
Here's a link to the MyPal

Good luck finding the one just right for you.
Thanks ChrissieSue
I appreciate the advice and info, esp the smaller screen on the Tungsten. I've got older eyes - I don't want anything too small. One thing nice about buying the same one as yours or Nicoles - its easy to ask for advice or help.
Talk to you soon (I'm sure!)

Still having fun!
Anna I hope you don't mind the continued discussion on the readers!
Chrissysue -- I bought a case for mine too --THAT CASE you point her to!
I am really glad I did. The PDA does come with a case but its not enclosed completely nor does it have room like the case logic does to store a couple things in, like the pointer(or whatever you call it).
Ellajay -- I agree with Chrissysue... look them all over. Maybe in the end you would find that the ebookwise or sony woudl be right for you--- that's the main thing. I wrote out a list of things and basically said, which features are REALLY important to me and went down the list. Compatibility and flexibility were number one on my list.
The screen on the PDA I have isn't too small, but then if you compare it to the Kindle... it seems small. Now, it doesn't seem small when I'm reading on it... but whenever I think of how big that Kindle is... then I THINK it seems small.
And you are soooo right on whichever ereader you get--people around here are very helpful! I've been getting help and can't say enough nice things about everyone on the Harlequin loops. Everyone keeps helping me!
Even with the programs! Just this morning Penn was helping me learn more about the Mobipocket. I can't wait to go try her suggestions.
So have fun! Let us know what you get in the end!

I don't mind
I don't mind the string going on. I love reading it and learning what all of you are getting and their features too. There is just so much out there that you really do have to choose what is right for you, and the more you know the better informed your decision will be. I'm glad I was able to start this discussion

The Sony eBook
The Sony eBook
I don’t think I’ve read any posts here about the Sony eBook reader.
I bought the Sony about two months ago. For me it is perfect because I only wanted something to make the type size bigger. I wanted this done with a page size the same as a paperback book. I also did not want to have to scroll down the page to read it all as I do on my computer when I read Adobe eBooks. This requires the eBook reader to re-paginate the book when you change type sizes. I also wanted a very clear screen like the page of a book and not like a computer monitor. I didn’t want backlighting as it uses way too much power and makes the reader hot. I also wanted the reader to look like a book and be about the same size as a paperback book. I also like having the battery last through many books without having to be charged.
The Sony eBook Reader does all the above. I do not care that it can also show slide presentations or play mp3 clips. I don’t use these features. I also did not want any other features to make it more complicated. I don’t need a PDA.
If all you want to do is read eBooks, I think the Sony has the best interface. The only problem is you have to buy your books from the Sony store if they are protected. Sony does not have all the deals that eHarlequin does nor does Sony have all the Harlequin eBook titles. However, prices are very competitive. And so far all the best sellers I looked for were available at competitive prices. Also the reader with a memory card will probably hold over 500 books! Take that on vacation. Best yet, no one can see how outrageously large your TBR piles is growing. “It’s just one book” as far as the rest of the world is concerned.
Thanks,
Vince
