Million Dollar Dad by C.J. Carmichael

Through a million-dollar inheritance, an impulse buy and a motherless little girl, a jaded lawyer and a widower father learn the true value of love.

Hearing that you’ve just inherited one million dollars would be cause for celebration for anyone—except Daniel Adams. After a year, he is beginning to move on after his wife’s death. But then a too-attractive lawyer from Boston swoops into the little town of Squam Lake and shatters his beliefs about his wife and their relationship.

Daniel isn’t the only one to be shaken. Lawyer Sandy Darby is touched by Daniel’s integrity and love for his wife. And as she spends more time in the town and with him, she begins to reevaluate her life and her priorities. But can these two scarred souls discover the true value of loving another person?

About The Author

C.J. Carmichael typed her first book on an electric typewriter, and sent it to Harlequin Enterprises with great expectations. She had so much to learn! The books she had enjoyed since her teen years seemed so structurally simple, but she soon realized that achieving this effect requires great skill and talent. Hoping she had the talent, C.J. worked on acquiring the skills and ten years later (yes, it really did take that long!) she sold her first book to the Harlequin Superromance line.

Writing about ordinary people, in extraordinary situations — that’s the kind of story C.J. loves to read and it’s the kind of story she writes, as well. Whether you’re a mom with kids, a single career woman, divorced, retired, young, old (or any combination of the above!) she wants you to feel as if you are reading about something that could happen to you in your real life (or to your daughter, or mother, or best friend).

GREAT first chapter...can't wait for the next one

I just love C.J.'s stories, always so emotional and her characters so real

Hi ya, CJ

Glad you found your way over here. Your online read is simply fantastic. This is the only part of my job that I dislike, I hate waiting for the next installments just as much as our members do. Laughing

Looking forward to next week. I can't wait to see what happens.

Are there two threads?

Hi Rae! It's good to be here, but I arrive a little confused. There was another batch of comments on Million-Dollar Dad, but I can't seem to find them anymore. Is this an alternate universe?

Alternate universe

Hi CJ,

The other posts were on the old community, we've since relaunched, so yes there were two threads, now there's just this one and with a little luck the others who posted in the old thread will make their way over here to comment some more on the upcoming chapter.

Rae

Found it!

Took a little bit of work but found my way to the discussion.  Smile  I'm just getting back into the online reads and I must say I totally enjoyed the first two chapters , CJ, and am looking forward to the next one.

Welcome!

Papaya and Sally, I'm glad you made it here! I hope the others come, too. Enjoy the weekend everyone and I'll look forward to seeing you back on Monday when the new chapter is out.

The wife's parents…

sound like PITAs.  I hope the dad and the lawyer won't fight.

I don't know....

I don't know that the dad wants to really do anything OTHER than fight.  He currently appears to be a totally self absorbed man who believes everyone one wants a piece of his fortune.  I think Sandy can, and will, only put up with so much.  Besides, now that she's going to have a house in this small town, I believe she will rethink her job in Boston.  ;-)

CJ, I SOOOOOO wish this were a daily!!!!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

Ooops!

I mean't the million dollar Dad, not the PITA dad.

Grand Daughter

Makes you wonder if the parents will soften once they find out there's a Grand Daughter?  I was surprised to read that Sandy received a phone call from the FIL directly.

Ooops from me!

FF,

My mind works on certain tracks, and this a.m., it was on a different one that the one you were talking about.  My bad.

Sally,

As for the FIL calling her directly, he seems to be the type who has to have control, and I think this is his way of getting/showing it, but that's just my thoughts....  :-D

April

It's been a while since

It's been a while since I've checked out the online reads, but I'm glad I did.  I really like this story, C.J.  I plan on getting THE DAD NEXT DOOR, too.

Marcy

Like this Story

Like the story, but am not too fond of the FIL. Type A Control Freaks just don't turn me on. Wink

Sure wish this were a daily so I could have the next chapter tomorrow.Cry

Control freak FIL

Yay, we have some more people showing up here! Welcome everyone!

I'm glad you guys are disliking the Father-In-Law so much. Here's a confession...it's fun to write about not-so-nice characters!

Thank you for checking out Chapter Three everyone. I must admit it's a long wait between chapters even for me...and I know where this is going!

He's so anxious for Daniel

He's so anxious for Daniel to sign, makes me wonder if the FIL has something he's hiding. It's almost as if Daniel signs off on the million, he's signed away rights to something else also...

Not sure the FIL would be interested in a granddaughter.  Seems to want to be rid of all connections to his daughter.

I too wish this was a daily readSmile

Ooooooh!!!!!

Ooooooh!!!!!  I hadn't even thought of that, Papaya!  Surely Sandy's read over the document.  But then again, if her bosses got it drawn, she might trust them enough to not bother with reading it.....  Stinks that we have to wait until Monday to find out!!!!

Hugs,
April

Enjoying this read

I am really enjoying this online read.  I too wish it was a daily instead of weekly.  Will be interesting to find out how Daniel handles Sandy moving to town.

Glad that Daniel took some time and thought about what his wife did and did not just go crazy and think she was a bad person.

The FIL will probably want to take control of the granddaughter so maybe Sandy will quit and defend Daniel.  She is getting a taste of what the daughter went through.

Elaine

OHHH BOYYY, wonder what

OHHH BOYYY, wonder what he's going to think about her buying the cottage nearby now that he's attracted to her!

Me, too,

Papaya!  I wonder if this will start (continue???) his reassessment of her.  Sounds like he's nailed his former father-in-law and his personality, though.  Let's hope Daniel is smart enough not to stick his foot in his mouth with Sandy.  Laughing

CJ, your cliffhanger for this chapter is SOOOOO not fair!  LOL!  Looking forward to the next installment!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

I think

Daniel is pretty astute.  And I can't understand why she doesn't let it drop and give him her card in case he ever changes his mind.  Maybe that's why I'm not a lawyer.

Turn down a million?

Sorry for the cliffhanger endings! But, hey, I have to get you guys back here somehow! :)

Can any of you imagine turning down a million dollars? Do you think you could do it?

Cheers,

CJ

Nope

If I felt so strongly about it, and was sure that it didn't come from an unsavory source (e.g., drugs, prostitution), I would accept it and use it for charity.

"Perhaps what the average member of a group is capable of doesn't limit what a given individual can accomplish." -- Boston Globe, letter to the editor
March's Member of the Month!

I'd accept it If it was

I'd accept it If it was clean money and depending on the circumstances (i.e. I'd take an inheritance, but not a bribe from family).  I'd pay the taxes, put some in an educational fund, put some aside to travel and donate most of it to an endowment fund for a non-profit I volunteer with and for builiding a "safe" shelter for natural disasters in our community.

I can understand why Daniel doesn't want to accept it though.  He feels he can provide for himself and his daughter and his wife totally disowned her family, so why should he accept anything from them now after she has died.

I would take the inheritance

I think that Daniel feels if his wife had to create a new family to replace the one she really had then he does not want anything from them.

I would accept the inheritance and make sure that my child had a chance to get a good education and a start on a retirement fund.

Elaine

Good answers!

I really liked the answers you all had to my question!

I'm glad, though, that you can understand why Daniel is being so stubborn about saying No!

 Cheers!

I guess the only people who

I guess the only people who would turn down a million dollars are the ones who already have a million; I wouldn't.  There are too many good causes that the money could go to and that should give anyone the pleasure to see.

Does anyone else think that perhaps Zoey named her daughter, Ruth, after a family member she always wanted to remember?

Hmmmm, like maybe the

Hmmmm, like maybe the grandmother that left her the inheritance?  That would be a good reasond to accept it...  if Zoey really cared about her and she cared about Zoey...  interesting thought....

i felt the sizzle when

i felt the sizzle when daniel asked sandy if she was the type of person that thought money could buy anything.

i can really feel the sexual tension between them.

hmmm...would i accept the million?  i would like to say no, and be honorable and heroic like daniel (i just love that he won't accept it!)  but, like the others here have said, if it was clean money, i would probably take it and use it to give my daughters a better life and give some to charity.

if i were daniel, maybe that charity would be the American Heart Association.

Re: MILLION-DOLLAR DAD by C. J. Carmichael

This one is too cool!  It's a gas reading stories about single Dads, as I am one also, with two "boys"  (although they are older now).

DITTO FF, My exact thought!

DITTO FF, My exact thought!

I could never work for someone like that or have them for a client.  It doesn't seem to fit Sandy's character either.

Sandy needs to start looking for a new job in Squam Lake.  WOnder if there's a need for a lawyer...of course if she quits her job now, she may not be able to afford her cottage...

Me, too!

I also think that ole Mr. Moneybags is a whoha.  I can't imagine Sandy taking him on as a client by her choice, which I don't believe she had here.

I am wondering if Daniel will get mad at her when he finds out that she's the one who told his late wife's father about Ruth.  I truly hope not!  And I can't imagine why he'd think Sandy didn't approve of his home, even though she left quickly.  She never let on that she didn't like it.  Even with the home she's bought, she's still there on business and Moneybags can't be the only client she's taking care of.  I do like Daniel, but he's gotta relax.

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

errrr, i really don't like

errrr, i really don't like Mr. Wheeler.  no wonder Zoey bailed and never looked back.  the guy is a jerk that thinks only money is important.

daniel seems lonely and he's such a devoted father.  i just want to shake him and sandy and tell them to be honest about their damn feelings already!

Daniel will be upset

Daniel will be upset with Sandy when he finds out that the Wheelers want Ruby.  I hope she tells Mr Wheeler where to get off asking if the child is healthy.

I think Sandy will quit her job and open up a practice in Squam Lake and then they can live happily ever after.

Story more than Half Over

Hi everyone & welcome to our new readers!

I can't believe we're past the half-way mark for the story. Thanks for coming back for another week! Mr. Wheeler is sure showing his true colors, isn't he?

Sally & Papaya...interesting thoughts about Ruth's name. We shall soon see if your intuition is right!

Hope everyone is having a good week. (It is cooold here in Calgary.)

Great latest chapter.

I pretty sure Daniel is going to follow his heart and be with Sandy. Though she want's to be the only important part in her right man's life. I think they will work it out.

"Reading is my passion."

I'm worried.

Not that they won't get together by the end, but they are going to have a big fight when he finds out that she is supposed to get him to "sell" his daughter.

I couldn't get in here last

I couldn't get in here last night after I read the chapter...

Now that she's bought the house, it's kind of hard to say shove the job, but I'm thinking if I were in that situation, I'd tell the boss I refuse to work with that client and either I get reassigned or fired, but I could never put a child in the middle like that in order to keep a job.

CJ Great story

It is a great story you've got going on here...can't wait to see how's Sandy is going to pop the FIL latest request to Daniel. How will Daniel take this latest news?

Having to wait for every Monday is plain killing me! Yell

Great Comments

Ladies and gents. Welcome, Hockeyjock! I've been a bit under the weather, so I haven't really had a chance to comment, but I'/ve been reading the story and your comments and they're spot on.

CJ great job at teasing us and making us want to come back each week. I'm extremely impatient and these things kill me. Wink

Can't wait to see what unfolds next with Daniel and Sandy. Tough decisions to be made the whole way around.

Oh boy...

... I'm in trouble... or should I say that my wobbly TBR is in trouble?  LOL
This the second online read that I've found ~ I don't know how, but I missed them all last year ~ and I knew, just KNEW, that it was going to be one of those where not only the story, but the author's writing, was going to get me to the bookstore looking for back listed books.

I must say that I thought I was so lucky ~ well I am, 'cause now I only have to wait 2 weeks for the end of the story ~ but it's not a daily read... which was painful enough!  Wink
Ah well, a wonderful story such as this is worth the wait!

So CJ, Calgary eh?  I'm from Edmonton... bet it's colder here. LaughingSealed

And I'll be here Monday morning with the rest of you ~ I can hardly wait to see just how quickly Daniel goes through the roof when he hears PITA Wheeler's offer.   Man, what a JERK he is... Wheeler, not Daniel.
FF you've got his personality nailed!

Oooooooh Nooooooo, It's Mr. Wheeler!

Well, there is only 1 chapter left, so there can't be a Big Black Moment.  Maybe just a Little Black Moment?  Please.

UGGHHH,  I hope they throw

UGGHHH,  I hope they throw Wheeler into the lake!

I wouldn't put it past Wheeler to get Sandy fired...    although she might have been on her way to doing that herself by ingnoring the client even if the client is an a$$hole.  She should have at least talked to her bosses.

I believe....

The final chapter is going to be event packed!  Sandy and Daniel will both tell the Wheelers off (or maybe the Wheelers will have a change of heart???  NAH!), S & D will announce their feelings for each other, she'll quit her job, and move there full-time to open her own practice.

But I can't wait to see how YOU do it all, CJ!  Looking forward to next Monday!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

The last chapter's gonna...

...be a full one just to tie up all the ends!  WoW.
And the Wheelers are there? UGH
Well, Daniel will have a chance to speak up for himself and make his position clear.  I don't think Wheeler stands a chance up against an enraged father.  Good!
