Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby

I have to say, I LOVE Diana Palmer's books....I especially love her Long Tall Texans series...she mentions heros and heroines from one book in another book about a different Hero/Heroine...and you get a glimpse into what their life turned out like after the book's ending...

I really like her books about cowboys...in fact, I like most books about cowboys...I'm pretty sure I was supposed to be born in a different era...a one where riding horses was common, stetsons were a must, spurs jangled in the silence, the whisper of petticoats being removed seemed so deliciously decadent...the quickest draw was considered legendary...Yes, I definitely think I was meant to be born in a different time period, and most probably as a cowboy-- even if I am a girl...so a cowgirl then...

Does anyone else feel like that? Do they read about different time periods and think they should have been a part of that? Or do you at least wish you had been a part of that time period? What time period do you wish you could be a part of?

funny you should mention Diana Palmer

It's funny you should mention DP,Smile I just finished blogging about Iron Cowboy her March Long Tall Texans book. There are so many of her characters I want to hear more of. I also love all things cowboy. I don't know about being in the wrong era but anytime there are cowboys is a good time period(well maybe not too far back)

Cowboys

Oh, I"m a COWBOY fan, too.  While I don't think I would have been happy in another era, I can definitely see myself living in the American West on a huge ranch with rolling hills and animals.

I've enjoyed DP for years, and I just read Christa's blog of Iron Cowboy.  I've not read it yet, but intend to.  I'm looking foward to her hardcover this summer as well.

cowboy lover

I am a definite cowboy lover too!  Which is funny, because my husband is anything but a cowboy.  I had to twist his arm to go to a Tim McGraw/Faith Hill concert with me.  Diana Palmer's Long Tall Texan books are wonderful!

I also think that I was born in the wrong era.  I can totally envision myself in the Wild West.  But as tend to be a very opinionated women, not so sure I would have had a nice easy life!

A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.

Christa - I haven't been

Christa - I haven't been able to read as much Diana Palmer books as I would like, but I've read as many as I can get my hands on...in fact I've got a couple new ones I'm waiting for right now, so I'll let you know when I'm finished....I would also want to read Iron Cowboy, but I'm not there yet! I'm missing a few from my collection to do with Shelbyville...I haven't ready Calhoun's story yet and some others, that's really bothering me...and I'm glad you like all things cowboy too!!!
(P.S. You're Canadian? So am I! Where abouts are you?)

Kate - talk about any American ranch with rolling hills and animals! I'm so glad the few of us recognize the difference between a farm and a ranch! (some people don't know the difference Sealed)...I've always wished I could've been born on a ranch instead of in the suburbs-- bleh!

Sherilynnw - I love Tim McGraw and Faith Hill too! It's sad because so many of my friends don't care too much for them and I've never been to a concert before (but I'm going for the Bon Jovi one in March, YAY!), so I would have loved to go see them!
Talk about being opinionated! I know exactly what you mean! You have no idea how much trouble I got into growing up because my dad and I butted heads one too many times...we still do Tongue out...and as much as I say I'd have loved to live in the Wild West, they would've hated me because of my stubborness and I'm far too outspoken...I never could get down the whole "a lady should be seen and not heard" concept...it was just too hard for me Wink

What about the Victorian era though, everyone? I was just reading a story and I have to say, those men with swords on Pirate ships sound very nice n' macho, and I would have loved to be there with swinging my sword to protect the man I loved! (I don't do the whole Damsel-In-Distress thing well either Cool)

Diana Palmer

Hi

I think I'm up to 90 DP stories that I own and may have read 85 of those. I've been able to collect a lot of her stories in books that contain 2 or 3 of her stories. Iron Cowboy won't be out til March(you can order it in Feb here) But I have a subscription to Desire so I just got my March Desires Thursday. Do you mean Jacobsville? Shelby is the name of a character and is a descendent of the town founders.

I'm in Southern Ontario, about 15 minutes from Niagara Falls in the fruit belt. You?

a canadian thing

Maybe this cowboy thing, is a Canadian thing, likely not exclusively though...

I am smack in the middle of the prairies, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.  Total city girl though.  Lived in Ottawa for two years when I was little.

A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.

Christa

I knew I had mixed that one up! I remembered after I posted that Shelby had been the name of one of the characters, but since I haven't read Shelby's book, or even the series for some time now, I wasn't really sure...

I don't have a subscription as of yet, I'm just buying the ones that I like and trying to read through the ones on my TBR shelf...but I still can't wait to get my hand on more of her books! She's my favourite Kiss

I'm near Toronto in the not-so-small-anymore town of Whitby...actually it's more like a city now...Niagara Falls? Very nice...I haven't been there in a while, last time was when I visited Niagara Falls as a kid...that was when my older brother told me that people actually get into barrels and go over the Falls...I never really believed him, but after growing up and realizing how stupid some people can be, I wouldn't put it beyond the realm of possibility...so was he just pulling a fast one on me?

Gelle

Niagara Falls in a barrel

Nope he's not pulling your leg, people have gone over the Falls in a barrel and survived but only on the Canadian side. Even though it is illegal it didn't stop people from trying, There was also a report on tight rope walkers, tight rope walking across the gorge. I barely go to Niagara Falls anymore I find it to touristy. One of the main streets leading to the Falls, Clifton Hill, is mostly souvinier shops, restaurants and museums. You can even get your picture taken so it looks like you are going over the falls in a barrelSmile.

I know exactly where Whitby is I have a sister who lives in Mississauga and last year I went on a run with one of my friends who is a truck driver and we had drops in Toronto, Whitby and Collingwood area.

Sherilynn - You're probably

Sherilynn - You're probably right about the Cowboy thing being Canadian, but probably not in Alberta...they still have lots of rural areas and ranches down there, don't they?
As for me, I only went to Ottawa a couple of times when my uncle was living there...now I know a few people down there attending University right now...but I can't stand the city much...I live in a place that doesn't even have skyscrapers and I already feel like I'm in too much of an urban development...I go downtown Toronto and I feel so caged, I NEED the open spaces of the country...I don't even like living in the suburbs right now...geez, what am I going to do with myself Surprised? Oh well, I'll cope...

Christa - I can't believe people do that! Although, I have to admit, I find the thrill of it understandable since skydiving has always been a dream of mine...when you're willing to take a walk on the Extreme wild side, the thrill would feel pretty exhilarating (jeez, did I spell that right?)...
Mississauga? I have family down there...or at least family friends...so I visit there now and again...so when you say run, do you mean like road trip? Or an actual run for a cause? 'Cause my uncle did that, he started this trend in India where they walked for a month or so and travelled a great distance-- that was more than twenty years ago and now there are hundreds of people who do it with him...I don't know for what cause (I think's it's for a religious cause) and I don't know how far, but I do remember that it was a pretty big distance....

Hmm, I have the sudden urge to go horseback riding Tongue out...too bad I don't own a horse Yell

Run

a run is what they call one of her trips. That trip she needed to make 7 drops(delveries) in 2 days. They are what you call long haul so they can usually be gone for 2 weeks or more. One trip they were gone for 28 days

Christa - mmm, I'd love to

Christa - mmm, I'd love to go on one of those long road trips with a trucker...but then again I've always liked long trips, so that would be a lot of fun for someone like me...

Kate - you should go, it's pretty amazing....but I agree that it's become too touristy now, so you should go for the experience (and go for the Maid of the Mist tour...I'm pretty sure that's what it's called)...and that way you'll know what it's all about...it really is quite amazing...

Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy

When I see a period movie, or read a historic novel, I used to think I would have liked to lived in that era.  Clothing and the social scene.

Then I think about how women would have been treated like property...no tampons....no panty hose...no washers and dryers.

I wealthy women and society, codes of conduct...are very restrictive...or if you are a pioneer woman your life is hard. Women died in child birth.

Now, as far as cowboys go....I saw a few at yesterdays Garth Brooks concert that made me go   HEEE HAW!

Terri
Got Books?

Terri - when you think

Terri - when you think about it, the oppressive way they treated women, the lack of hygiene, the primitive lifestyle...you tend to get a bit turned off by the idea...but then I realized that I would have my life made if I could just be a modern-day cowgirl....but with the encroachment of urbanization, I realize that isn't a very feasible idea, is it? However, if I were to go to a concert full of cowboys, don't think I'm going to hold anything back! Wink

Foot in mouth ugh, I'm just saying those things...in reality I'm as shy as anything when it comes to meeting guys...I'm one of those frumpy gals you see walking down the street...Tongue out

Gelle

Secret-sensitive - all good

Secret-sensitive - all good reasons why I don't think my life would have been very easy back then.  No matter what time we lived, we would still be us, right?  And I am still an outspoken, stubborn, opinionated woman.

But on the tough days in this day and age, it's nice to imagine.......plus our modern cowboys are not too shabby to!

A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle.

Time Warp

Have you ever seen the PBS series 1800 house?  I saw it in bits and pieces....modern day people living like it was in 1800's.

But of course, being born in the last 2 months of the 1950's, I feel like I am in a time warp.

My cousin has two girls...7 & 3.5.......the 7 year old had her own lap top computer when she was 4, and now she got a SideKick (phone) for Christmas.   When I was 7 I was barely allowed to talk on the phone....lucky I had a little transister radio.

Terri
Got Books?

Sherilynn - no kidding! "If

Sherilynn - no kidding! "If only, if only..." runs through my mind when I read the books...but when I remember how unappreciative people were of outspoken females like ourselves, I relish this age we grew up in...

Terri - I agree, except I think only the lucky kids get laptops and phones at so young an age...my cousins kids are around 5 & 6 and the most they get is brand new clothing and tons of toys all the time...and they're the spoilt ones in the family...however, it could just be because of our culture...we're anglo-indian so my family is a bit more conservative than most people...

Gelle

I was one

of the lucky ones who was raised on a ranch in SE Oklahoma.  We still own the family ranch, and my brother and nephew run it.  They raise cattle and pecans on the banks of the Red River, spitting distance from Texas.  I would move back there in a second if it were closer to my job, but we can't all make a living there, and I can't drive any further than I am already driving to work now.  My weekends are generally spent there, roaming the country side, riding four-wheelers more than horses these days, and breathing in that fresh country air.  Real cowboys are hard to come by, but there's still a few out there.  They have a hard life, but they have a good life.
