Things that Make You Go...HUH? We Have a Winner!

j0434403.wmf

I've had some work done in my yard recently, and I came across something that happened that had me shaking my head and saying, "A woman would NEVER do that."

I know that's a biased statement, so I'll tell the story, and you let me know what YOU would do.

I had some decorative concrete curbing installed. Part of it came flush with the side of my house where a small, loose cable ran to my sprinkler system. Now, if I were pouring concrete curbing, I would lift the flimsy, lightweight cable out of the way.

But no. They concreted the cable right smack into the middle of the curb where my flimsy cable has now become an immovable object.

Keep in mind. I was home during this process. If they were unwilling to touch the cable, they could have knocked on the door, and I would have done something to tape it out of the way. Never in my wildest dreams would I have concreted over it... and I honestly don't think another woman would have done that either.

So what do you think? Am I biased or am I right? Wink Post a comment, and I'll pick a winner on Saturday!

OMG,Stacy!

You handled it much better than I would have!!! If they were still there I would have let them know that

1-only men would do something that stupid!

2-they now need to tear that area apart and put that cable out of harm's way

3-I will send in a very informative customer reply to the head of their organization

4-I also will be alert to any future jobs they do and inform the customers they had better keep an eye out

I know this sounds cruel, but I grew up in the country where we farmed and did our own work ,so I learned to do things wisely and correctly. Then I was a single mom for over 7 years where I further learned how to be a diy lady, and taught my daughters the same. Not trying to sound a know it all(I am FAR from that!!),but if dh or son-in-laws are going to do a project, they first consult with Mom for suggestions and avoid my comments later.  I just have a hard time dealing with work not done logically and correctly!  Ok,enough, need to go outside and do some weeding.Cool

Oh heavens....

If that'd been me I'da gone ballistic on them... I mean REALLY!

Not sure if it's a woman vs man thing ~ my DH would have a COW if anyone did something like that ~ but rather it seems to be a rather lazy-guy-doing-the-least-work-possible thing... and extremely likely only an employee... not someone with a stake in the business.  Undecided
And I'd want to thump him / them!  Sheesh....  Tongue out

TV cable repair guys

About four months ago my TV cable went out so they had to come out and replace it.  The cable ran from a pole that was located next to the street that is one house away from me so they had to string the cable from that pole to the pole that is in my yard (technically the city owns a clearance strip of land along the back of all our yards where utilities are run) then to the back of my house where the cable is attached to a box.  When they were through stringing the cable they left after saying that some one would be out in the next few days to "bury" the cable underground and then they left before I could even say "huh?"Surprised So for a week the cable lay from the first pole along the top of a wooden fence to the second pole, across my back yard to the house.  No one came to do anything about it so I finally called the cable company back and they sent out a young man to see what could be done about it. (Fortunately the grass didn't need mowing during that time.) Yell When he got here and saw what they had done he called his boss and said he needed to come out and see what the others had done.  Once he and his boss had confirmed the stupidity of the previous guys he got to work and strung the cable from one pole to the other like it should have been done in the first place and then from the second pole to the house attaching it to the garage, then to the storage shed, then to the house and put a proper box on the house to protect the cable connection from rain. Smile  That's my "HUH" moment.

Definitely something

Definitely something only a man would do. Embarassed Okay maybe I shouldn't say that...must have been the kind of person that does things without thinking through first. Poured right over and then thought "oh well I messed up, but I won't say anything maybe she won't notice".

What are you going to do? They are responsible for fixing the situation. Things like this makes me pull my hair out in frustration.

It's not a man thing.  My

You're right

You're right.  We think differently from men, they seem to have not so much in the way of common sense nowadays.

Shelli

Not a man thing.

None of the men on either side of my family would do something like that. Ranchers, architects and engineers, they do things right. Sometimes so right that it takes longer than it really needs to, but there you go. :)

I would rather it take longer and be done right than rush through and be done wrong so in my opinion you are really lucky.

You're right - only a man could this - brains they MAY have......common sense?    NONE!     It's a bit like when they make a cup of tea and lift the tea bag out of the cup and DRIP......yes I said drip it all the way over the to the sink - worktops covered in tea stains......floor covered in tea stains......sink covered in tea stains.....now why do they do that?Yell   Like I said, brains possibly, common sense NONE!

Things that Make You Go...HUH?

It's hard to believe anyone would do something like that!   Some people just don't think before they do things.

my two cents worth

Are you going to make the idiot's come back and fix the problem Stacy.  I agree with the others they should be made to come back and fix it.

What happens if that cable comes loose will that affect your sprinkle system?

Aunt Cheryl--Unfortunately, they already left by the time I noticed what they'd done.

Kalyko--Maybe it is a laziness rather than a male vs. female thing

Ellen--When I got a DVR installed from my cable company, the "left" some cables for me. They didn't tell me that they'd UNHOOKED by DVD player and that I would have to use the cables to hook it back up.

Star--I'm not sure what I'm going to do.

Frenchie--I do know there are guys out there who would never do such a thing.

Shelli-It's stuff that just makes me wonder!

Penn--It's good to know there are men out there who still do things right!

Mavis--Yeah, I have brothers, and while one of them has improved Wink, I sure saw a lot of things growing up where you know they just aren't thinking!

Chey--It's crazy, I know, and of course, I PAID for this. It's not like something just happened. I'm a paying customer.

I have to admit, though, I really try not to get upset about stuff, and in a way, it kinda makes me laugh!

Thanks for all the posts! Keep 'em coming!

Men would

probably point out some of the dumb things women have done. I too think it was a laziness issue or not caring. I don't think most men would have done that.

you are....

right.  A woman would have either moved the darn cable or knocked on your door.

Or - maybe they thought it was a snake and thought it would be funny to bury it in concrete?

Very, very wrong

Anyone with half sense would know that the way they did it is completely wrong.  I don't know that it's a man vs. woman thing.  My DH wouldn't have done it that way.

However, you'd better call them, lodge a complaint, and have them come out to re-do it because, if your sprinkler system ever needs to have work done on it, I'm sure that company would charge you for breaking the cable out of the concrete, and then you'd have to pay to have your stonework redone, too.  Much better to have them fix it now at their expense.

It's a man thing...

I'm raising 2 sons, 17 & 14. Yup, I can SO see them doing something like this.

And then I come along behind, point it out, make them fix it, and I'M the Bad Mom!

Wow, hope you let us know if you call & get this resolved with their boss. Bet they won't do that again!

Comments

Kate--I agree, though I will say that not ALL men would have done it that way!

Mavis--Maybe if they stuck around, but you're right, I think they'd bail pretty fast!

Deb--Absolutely, women have their moments, too! I know I've had more than a few...

Marcia--See? That's the thing that gets me. They could have taken two seconds and asked me.

JV & Tap--Yes, I do need to call and at least let them know.

My hubby would never do that

but that may be because we both have a background in fiberoptics and remoting cables. I would say it's those particular workers. I had to help my DISH installer fabricate a cable once since he didn't bring one and was trying to take the one on my DVD player.

I don't think many people take pride in their work anymore; they just want to get in and out.

My Husband

My husband would never do anything like that.  As a matter of fact if something like that happened at to us, he would call up the boss and cuss them out.

I have to agree, this sounds like a case of the lazy-man syndrome that hits some guys.

More Comments

Angel & Pamala--

I think it is laziness or just wanting to get in and get out.

Since my "real" job is construction related, I try to understand because I know that sometimes the installers get to a job site and things aren't what they expected for whatever reason. BUT that's why I always try to be at home when having work done, for cases just like this, where they could have asked me what I wanted done.

This was just a small outdoor job; I have so much sympathy for anyone who has ever done major interior remodeling!
