Passion: Presents Style
He's handsome, he's cosmopolitan and he wants you!
Well, all right, really...he wants her, the heroine we want to be. The naive young girl, the strong minded American abroad, or the independent European who refuses to be cowed to the desires of a man used to ruling.
But we get to read it! Some of us get to write it! And we all get to sigh and cheer and sob and put these classic romances on our keeper shelves. But before you put your books up, ladies, pop in to share your views on what keeps you coming back to Passion...Presents Style!

Hello! Could I possibly be the first to post on the new thread? Is anyone else out there?
Happy new year, everyone. I'm looking forward to more great discussions on good books to read, and writing for Presents and whatever else comes up in 2008.

How great to get up this morning and see I'm not alone here any more. Hi everyone! So great to see you here.
Nicki, best of luck with your contest entry. It sounds like you're on the right track, paring it down to the essentials. It can be time-consuming but well worth it. Good luck to you and everyone else entering the contest. The prizes are too good to miss, aren't they?

Happy New Year
Hi Everyone,
Nice to be here in the shiny new room. Haven't been posting as much lately due to obvious commitments but I always lurk and keep up on the news.
Doing well with little Nathan, he is very sweet and his older brother has been lovely as well. The great thing about breastfeeding is that there is loads of spare time to read, yes I'd probably prefer sleep at 3.20AM but might as well seek the benefits where I can.
The last book I read was Ian McKewan's "On Chesil Beach" which was absolutely wonderful, the basic format reminded me a lot of M&B, basically the exact same length and a character driven relationship full of conflict. lol about the length as I remember reading how David Cameron (UK opposition reader) was obviously planted with the book as a photo op as there were two pictures of him reading it within a six month timeframe, er.. well I finished it in 4 hours.
I'm pleased to say I'm writing again, polishing off my first chapter and trying to get quite a bit of the ms finished as as I've had so much thinking time about these two characters that their story just seems to be bursting out at the moment.
I'll do my best to post more regularly, but if I don't I'm thinking of you all, and if I do post somewhat briefly and incoherently all I can say is one handed typing is tough - but luckily one handed on line shopping is easier.

Well, this is different. Your turn your back for a moment -- well, ok, for a couple of weeks! -- and they completely rearrange the furniture! Very nice, if I do feel a bit, um, dazed and confused.
I'll go check out the 'favorites' and see if my pic turns up -- and if not figure out how to get it here (I hope).
I've taken off the last few weeks while we were doing Christmas and then some house projects while dh was still home from school between semesters. But now he's back at the teaching again, so I'm buckling down on a new book.
Hope everyone had good holidays. Glad to hear that Nathan is doing well, Carol. I remember all the reading I got done being a big perk of breastfeeding. And there was the convenience factor, too. Enjoy your books -- even at 2 a.m.

research
Hi Becca, good luck with the competition. Research is one of the easiest and nicest parts of the job - I think! Films are always good for giving you ideas and background. For instance, the Thomas Crown Affair (the Pierce Brosnan version) shows an unbelievably glamorous life. Also the Ocean's Eleven/Twelve/Thirteen movies. I use magazines a lot too, the big glossies like Vogue, or Harpers Bazaar etc. And at least if you can't afford them you can go and browse them in a store...best of luck anyway!
Trish welcome back, it sounds like you had a fantastic time. Very jealous of course as it's freezing here.
My cold has gone thankfully, so I've no excuse not to get back to work now...!

Research etc
Well, it looks as if everyone is startin g to find their way back to us - lots of familiar faces coming back in here. And I think I'm starting to find out how things work around here.

Well - trying for an emoticon worked!
Becca - i'm with Daisy on the use of films and magazines for research (in fact I've written a post for the Pink Heart Society on just that topci) - also 'lifestyle' programmes - plus a healthy dose of imagination - just imagining how you'd love things to be! When I first started out, I used to collect up pictures of fabulous houses, clothes etc and refer to them when i was writing.
Welcome back Trish and Anne and everyone else. Annie I hope you're having a great time. I envy anyone with some sunshine today - it's raining here again it's been wet for days and days - still, my editor would say that that means I can stay indoors and write.
Oh and I mean to write a blog about that Presents contest - I just keep getting distracted!

I am so grateful for this competition. It has really gotten me writing again when I could easily be wallowing a babymoon instead. I've been amazed by how much I've managed to fit into a day when I'm motivated. Today I learned how to use my satnav, registered Nathan's birth, sorted out the landscaping for our front driveway with the contractor, shopped for new clothes, ordered a new bathtub, packed for our weekend away, cooked dinner, have written 2,000 words already and even have the time to procrastinate and write a boring dialog on it all!
How's everyone elses entries going? I've done my first chapter and synopsis which is with a CP at the moment and I'm 14K into the full ms now.
Carol you continually amaze
Carol you continually amaze me! Where on earth do you get all that energy from?? Great that you've managed to get 14k done. I'm about the same I think. The first chapter still needs work but I'm giving myself a few days break from it.
Waves to everyone else.
Kate it's nice to see your face. It seems like ages since you've been here.
Chris.
Chris
Chocolate is a good start. Too much of it at the moment in fact, hence the new clothes. I'm sick of wearing maternity trousers but still can't fit into my old ones but thankfully M&S's tactful sizing still pins me at a size 12.
To be honest my buzz at the moment is really coming from my desire to suceed with my writing. I know I have to get all the other stuff done so I can then sit down at my computer and get on with my manuscript, apart from playing with my boys (dh firmly included in that), writing is my favourite part of the day.
I agree with you it's nice to see Kate... and everyone else in here as well. Love the new chat setup.
A technical question for you lovely authors.
My current ms is lending itself far more towards the H's point of view at the moment. Basically due to mistaken identity the h doesn't know he is a billionaire businessman and thinks him an ordinary man, the uncertainty this throws up in him means he has the most at stake in a lot of scenes, hence they're from his pov.
Things are probably about 75%-25% in the H's pov in the first three chapters, although this may change further on.
It's very different to anything I've written before and I find myself consciously trying to shift into the h's pov -- so my question is it necessary to do that? Is being to heavily H pov oriented potentially a problem, or should I just continue telling the story in the way it seems to come out the best?
P.S Don't I look like an absolute post hog at the moment? These pictures are really revealing.
Hey Post Hog!
Just kidding! I had no idea chocolate was so powerful. I must be eating the wrong stuff because I certainly don't have your energy.
Speaking of which, tonight is Thursday and that means coach potato night. All my favorite shows are on. Sad, but fun!
Jeanette
Hooray, I've found you all !
Glad you had a lovely holiday, Trish!
Hi Kate H! I read The Italian's Chosen Wife over Christmas and loved it. I'm counting the days until I can get my hands on your next one!
Glad the cold's gone, Daisy.
Glad to hear you're writing up a storm, Carol! I'm seriously impressed. Interesting to hear how your ms wants to be written in the H's pov. And it'll be interesting to hear whether the published authors think you're in the heroine's pov enough.Me, I love being in the Hero's head and would probably say write it how it wants to be written and make a decision about whether you need more of the h's pov when you've finished the first draft. I've got the opposite problem to Nicki, in that my first chapter needs fleshing out rather than paring down as it's very bare bones at the moment.
Heard from the ed who has my full that she intends letting me have a decision within the next month. bites fingernails!
waving to everyone
Sue
For the post hog!
>> Is being to heavily H pov oriented potentially a problem, or should I just continue telling the story in the way it seems to come out the best
Hi Carol - that's an interesting question you're asking and as I answer it, I'm going to emphasise that this answer is not a 'rule' or a 'must be' - but I'm going to come down on a strong piece of advice.
I know that there has been a change in romance writing in past years and that the move towards including the hero's POV has grown and I don't think it will ever disappear again - but I'm going to have to re-emphasise one very important thing - and that is that no matter what else has changed in romance writing, the fact is that the readers still see the heroine as their lead in to the story. She is the character with whom they ally themselves, through whose eyes they read the story - she's the one they relate to and whose feelings they most sympathise with.So the heroine is the character through whom the reader 'filters' the story.
Obviously I haven't read your story but I'll admit, honestly, that reading that you have 75% hero POV to 25% of the heroine makes me feel that the balance seems off. There are some authors who can get away with this and who focus strongly on the male POV but the reader wants to relate to the heroine and I do feel that you are not fullfilling this important connection by telling the story in this way.
I'd be interested to know what others think - both as writers and readers. I know that sometimes it's said that Presents are 'the hero's story' but that means in terms of his character growth and development - not in his monopolising the focus.
Sue - good luck with that full. Let us know when you have any news.

Hi there, nice to see you Sue, that's great news about hearing within the month - leave your fingernails alone! I'm sure it'll be good news, how exciting!
My bizarre cold went and then came back...hmmm. very strange. I'm reading Anne McAllisters One Night Baby at the moment and I'm enthralled and again astounded at how effortlessly well she writes a story. It's making my own ms seem like a pile of incoherent sludge.
Carol as for your question about POV, I'd be inclined to listen to Kate. I've even been thinking recently along the lines of writing purely from the heroine's POV because I read some older books recently and they're so powerful. The hero's POV does definitely add and new richer dimension, but should only serve to heighten the tension, without revealing too much of his inner thought process - hark at me, preaching what I'm trying to do! But that's my tuppence worth anyway if it's any help. Good luck!
