Hold The Date--Weekly Online Read by Shirley Jump
Author Shirley Jump joins us to discuss each chapter of her new online story, Hold the Date, that introduces the stars of the upcoming Harlequin Romance miniseries, The Wedding Planners.
Navyman Ben Wagner returns home to marry his girlfriend Monica Carson. Only when he gets there, she’s called off the wedding. With a little help from the Wedding Planners, Ben woos Monica all over again and convinces her they were meant for each other.

About the Author
Shirley Jump didn’t have the willpower to diet nor the talent to master
undereye concealer, so she bowed out of a career in television and opted instead for a career where she could be paid to eat at her desk — writing.
She sold her first book to the Silhouette Romance line in 2001. That novel, The Virgin’s Proposal, won the Booksellers’ Best Award for Best Traditional Romance of 2003.
Shirley now writes stories for Silhouette and Kensington about love, family and food — the three most important things in her life (if she’s being honest, though, there are many days when the order is reversed), using that English degree everyone said would be so useless.
Though she’s thrilled to see her books in stores around the world, Shirley mostly writes because it gives her an excuse to avoid cleaning the toilets and helps feed her shoe habit.

What's happened....
to change her mind about Ben? It seems to me like that should be some sort of trigger point that started it all.
Yet another story that is a weekly that I wish were a daily!!!!!
Great start, Shirley!
Hugs,
April
You can do anything if you put your mind to it.... but it won't go far without the rest of your body.
Better to do it now than
Better to do it now than wait until they are married. But, I want to know what happened. Good first chapter.

Thanks for the compliments! And hopefully the not knowing will hook you all into reading next week ;-).
FYI...for those of you having trouble finding the story (like I did; I'm still getting used to the new eHarlequin, which I LOVE, but need to find my way around yet), it's here.

Do I have to wait a whole
Do I have to wait a whole week?
Will the next 7 chapters be centered on getting Monica back or will he meet someone new? I agree-this should definitely be a daily!
That was soooo wrong!
You know the worst part of my job? That I have to read these and wait like the rest of you. I hate waiting. I mean, I really, really, really hate it.
Shirley, I can't decide if I still like you--just kidding! Way to hook, line and sink me.
Rae, who cannot wait for next Monday.
If I told you...
There'd be no reason to come back next Monday, now would there? ;-)
All I can say is you'll find out when you keep returning, LOL. I know what you all mean, though. I hate waiting, too, and I didn't buy "The Green Mile" until all the editions had been released so I could read the entire book in one sitting.

Thanks for the link FF. I hope the link from the chapter works next week!
Wonder why Monica has gotten cold feet! Although if I was in her shoes, I might do the same thing... a relationship built mostly on email and letters with a few visits in between wouldn't work for me no matter how much I loved the guy.
I think this will be
I think this will be good...many possibities can't wait til Monday.

Just a little side tidbit...
Though I didn't get cold feet :-)...My husband was in the Navy and got out shortly before we married a LONG time ago. So I had that long distance love thing going with him :-) But we dated in the age before e-mail (my goodness, can anyone imagine those days now?) and had to watit ages for letters.

Sometimes it seems
Sometimes its seems that you will say more in an email or a letter than you will face to face.
I think something else has caused her to change her mind.
Looking forward to next weeks chapter.
Elaine
They met right before he
They met right before he got shipped out then corresponded by emails/letters and met each other during his leaves. That's not a whole lot of face to face time in 4 years. I can see why she would hesitate. I would hesitate if I were in her shoes. I would opt for more time together to build the relationship before getting married. But that's me! I know others think differently
I am wondering what's up with her though that she is completely cutting him out...
BTW, Shirley, I like your books and I'm sure this online read will be a great read
wishing it was a daily like the rest of you though, these weekly reads drive me crazy since I am an impatient reader and want to read right through to find out what happens
Hey, Shirley! It looks
Hey, Shirley!
It looks like you've been staying pretty busy! I'll have to pop back over in two months so I can read "Hold the Date" all at once! LOL I'm an impatient reader as well..
-Michelle S.
Just a little busy...LOL
Yep, Micki--I've been busy! This year alone I've already written a Christmas book for this Christmas (Marry-Me Christmas, the last in the Bride for All Seasons series being kicked off in spring by Liz Fielding), as well as this online read. In the next few weeks, I finish up a book for next February, then start one for next July.

She's being a pip. Every
She's being a pip. Every relationship is different. And since she didn't tell Ben all this, she is being worse than a pip.

Stubborn
is what I call Monica. There has to be more to this as well. I've heard of cold feet before...and she does have valid points about marriage--it's hard work for us women.
Poor, poor, Ben.
Rae
Imaptiently waiting for next Monday....
I'll bet when her grandparents first married they didn't finish each others sentences, etc. After 60 years, of course they knew each other well. Monica is not really being realistic about that marriage.
I, too, believe there is something more we have to learn about why she made this decision. It has to be more than comparing their relationship with her grandparents. No two relationships are alike.
Why, oh why, did I not wait a few more weeks to start this read??? Just could not stand for there to be a chapter online and available and not read it. Now I have to wait a whole week for the next chapter.
It's probably a good thing
It's probably a good thing she called off the wedding. Sounds like she needs some "growing up" to do. Can't believe she's still in love with him, yet not even willing to work on the relationship! They may have communicated by email and letter, but doesn't seem like they communicated the important things. If she is worried about his take charge attitude and the fights they have, then she should talk to him about it. How can you love someone so much and not even try to make things right before writing it off
I know they are going to work this out and am anxious to see how... I wish this was a daily read!
I'm still liking the story and wanting to know more even though (as FF says) she's being a pip!
I like her almost maid of honor too! I got married in blue jeans and a plaid shirt with a wili lei on my head
in a Catholic wedding in a church! The priest said it was his first wedding where he had a lot more white than the bride! Can't remember what I had on my feet, but at the reception I put on shorts and my rubber slippers
Hope there's a story on her in your wedding planners series!
She's still being …
She's still being … aggravating. Why doesn't she tell him what she is feeling? Grrrrrr.

Awww.....
Ben is so sweet...... Monica needs a smack upside the head...... Wondering how this lunch convo will go.

Monica has so real problems
Monica has so real problems within her self. And I wondering how the lunching will go.
Difficult to read once a week
This story would be better as a daily. We still honestly don't know why she broke off the engagement.
In today's chapter, we could tell that he remembered that she likes green tea, number of sugars, etc.... Considering that they've spent so much time apart -- I'm impressed by that.
Can't wait to read about their lunch.
Hard to wait!
Am I the only one who waits for a couple of chapters to be available before reading them? I also hate season ending cliffhangers and in one case didn't watch the last show of the season until right before the new premiere!

I'm glad Ben....
hasn't given up on Monica, although her blockheadedness doesen't deserve him.
I can't wait to see her lightbulb moment! I wonder what it'll be??????
I TRULY wish this were a daily!!! Another great chapter, Shirley!

She's being annoying. She
She's being annoying. She doesn't explain anything and she runs away every time. He is better off without her. Now she will melt into his arms and then she will say it doesn't mean anything, that it's just hormones talking. Why doesn't she talk to him about her grandparents? Arrrrrgggh!

Shake her
I agree that Monica is being totally irritating. I just want to shake her and tell her she owes him a FULL and complete explanation. I don't know what's the matter with her, anyway. Ben's so devoted to her and so firm in his love for her that I don't know how she could NOT love him. I love this guy! (Don't tell my husband!)
She really hasn't explained anything!
She really hasn't explained anything. If she can't explain "what is wrong" with their relationship, she can't expect Ben to accept that they are over. Though, right now, I am wondering what he saw in her in the first place. Hope this improves in the next chapter.
Don't be too hard on her!
Don't be too hard on her. She seem to be young and not sure what it is she wants. It sound more like she is just afraid and not sure how to express her feelings. She knows something is not right about the relationship but is hard press to say what she is looking for and probably does not know how to ask for it.
This is the first time I have read anything by Shirley Jump. Great read!
Divah
I'm with Divah
I'm enjoying the story. It's hard to explain what changes when someone's been away so long and you've been on your own...you feel selfish because they're serving their country and you're left behind, coping with life. I think it's a great read and totally enjoying it!

Enjoying the read
but she does need to explain to someone - herself, Ben or her friend why she is calling it off. There just does not seem to be a reason she can make anyone understand, including herself.
I am willing to give her the benifit of the doubt for a little while longer.
Elaine
Don't get me wrong...
...I didn't mean that as a critique of the story. I'm enjoying the read, too. It's because I AM enjoying the story that I'm so frustrated for poor Ben and annoyed at Monica. (If I weren't into it, I wouldn't care one way or the other.)
As others have indicated, I'd love this to be a daily rather than a weekly. It's hard to wait.
You have it, JV!
It's hard to wait, it's frustrating and so, since Ben seems so wonderful and Monica's not telling us what her problem is, we're all taking it out on her. It's a tribute to Shirley's writing skills that she can draw it out this long - and it's hard waiting for us!

OK, she's just given him a
OK, she's just given him a little information. We'll see what he does with it. If she would just give him time and talk to him, they could work things out. But she's being all to real. She is expecting him to see what is in her head without telling him.

She's WAAAAAY too serious
about him needing to be serious. Life doesn't come with guarantees, and she's expecting them. Ben is totally more realistic about what life and love are about. 'Fighting' is part of the give/take of any REAL relationship.
I think what she needs to do is talk with her grandparents (if they're still around) and find out (I'm sure) that they had their disagreements, but talked and worked their way through them. It's possible that they hid them from her because of her early life tragedy, but she needs to know.
Still enjoying this, Shirley! Looking forward to see how you resolve this so they get their HEA!!!!
Hugs,
April

Melissa you are not the only one...
...who waits a bit and then starts the read. I seriously hate waiting a week for the next chapter. So, I just started the read today. Like others, I'm annoyed with Monica.
She does have some explaining to do! Ben seems like a keeper-so, where is the problem?
Shirley, what are you hiding from us?
I'm enjoying this read even if I'm annoyed with Monica. I hope you are able to see how your readers are pulled into-engaged by your characters, otherwise we wouldn't be so annoyed with one of the characters.
Nancy
Monica needs to grow up.
Sounds as if she is looking for a very boring marriage. No flare ups! No laughter! That kind of relationship isn't based on caring it is based on convenience. The best marriages I know about are those where there are arguments (not fights). By arguments I do not mean belittling the other person but having disagreements with love. No way can two people cohabit without there being disagreements. Also, no way can two people cohabit without there being fun and laughter included.
Just can't figure out what Ben ever saw in Monica in the first place.
I am enjoying the story, but am not sure I really want them together. I am sure Shirley has a perfect ending for us but really hate to have to wait another week, and another week...
Crap!!!
Why do I get the feeling Monica needed to read that letter before Ben go there???? What did her grandmother send him? What did her note to him say?
Why can't all the stories be daily ones????
Hugs,
April
You can do anything if you put your mind to it.... but it won't go far without the rest of your body.
RATS!!!!!!
I can't wait to find out what in the world was in Grandma Bea's letters to Ben and Monica! What did she give to Ben?
What will happen in the next chaper? I can hardly wait for next Monday to find out! Wish this was a daily read also.
Shirley, you really know how to keep your readers on the edge! I am really enjoying this read!
I hear ya!
I hate waiting, hate anticipating right along with ya. Seriously, Shirley, you should be...punished.
Way to keep us hanging!

Yes she is, FF,
and so is Ben. She with her ears, he with his heart. I'm glad he realized she needed him but he wasn't there for her. He knew how much her grandmother meant to her, but didn't make the effort to support her in her time of grief and pain. (Of course, with the military, I'm still not sure he could have gotten away, though.)
Now, it's time for her to realize how much she needs him in other ways.... and for always. Can't wait to find out more about the letters!
Until next week!!!!!

Hanging, hanging!!
Not fair!!! Wait a whole week? I so not want to do that!!!
I am pretty sure I know what he wants to ask, but WHAT IS IN GRANDMOTHER'S LETTER?
Seven days!!! How will I wait so long?
Just like everyone else, I guess. What a good story! Shirley, just enough angst and suspense.
I'm glad he's finally realizing
what she has been going through.
Dang, it's going to be hard to wait one more week to find out what was in Grandma's letters!
I know they will end up getting married, but the wait is killing me!

I am on the edge of my seat with this story. I can't wait to find out what the letter says, and see what goes on. This one definately should have been a chapter a day, but I think its even more exciting because of the antisipaction aspect. I can wait for Monday now.
