In this prequel to The Devil’s Footprints, we get a glimpse of the last days of Rachel DeLaune’s life and the people—or things—that might have killed her…

Sixteen-year-old Rachel DeLaune seems to have it all-she's smart, beautiful, favored by her father and envied by her sister. But none of that can protect her from the shadows she sees lurking around the house, the threats that seem to come from everywhere and the strange footsteps that she hears following her.

Fear becomes her constant companion as she tries to keep herself and her family safe. But who can she turn to when she can trust no one? When evil seems to lurk in everyone-including her own family....

OK, sounds like someone is

OK, sounds like someone is beating her up, or holding her very tightly by the wrists...    such a short chapter, but I guess that is the way of the word count!  I'm going to have to read another chapter or two before I figure out if I like this story or not...    I don't do real well with real scaryEmbarassed

Hi Papaya, Ok im with

Hi Papaya,

Ok im with you. I was wondering the same thing. Whats was hurting her? This would be my 3rd Mystery/Thriller Read. I'm starting to get into it. My husband loves Thriller and Mystery and I'm more of a romance and romance mystery. I hope the second chapter will be much better and longer.

~Booklover22~

Whoa....  this is kind of

Whoa....  this is kind of dark reading... I'm not so sure I'm going to continue this... will need tomorrow's chapter and decide...

Whats Going On?

Hi Papaya,

This story seems to be starting of slow. I'm a little confused by the 1st and 2nd chapter. I’m don't know if I want to hear any more. Maybe the next chapter will shade some light on what’s to come in the next chapters.

~Jeria22~

I'm not much of a scary girl myself, but I'll stick it out as long as we keep the lights turned way up. :)

Well the commentarty on the

Well the commentarty on the story says it's the last days of Rachel's life.  This is the prequel (it seems anyway) to Devil's footprints which is much later with her sister trying to solve the mystery of Rachel's death...  I'll stick it out another chapte or so and see what goes.  I'm holding your hand Dream with the lights way way bright!

Thanks Papaya!

I'm definitely going to have to read this during daylight hours.

In a way, the prequel reminds me a lot of Alice Seybold's The Lovely Bones. We're getting a look at the last moments of her life (and her death, perhaps?) through her eyes. So it'll be interesting to read the book through her sister's eyes and see her death solved.

Hmmm

This is some heavy, spooky, creepy reading guys...with this and the street life one before, I am about ready to off myself! I like to read to escape from the yuck of life and it seems like we are getting some reads that take the yuck and square it, maybe even cube it! I hope that is not the new trend! I will stick around to see what happens in the next few chapters...but with these prequels that have been here lately...it's pretty much g'teed that nothing along the lines of a nice ending will!! Cry

Wondering...

Bruises on her wrist, the knock on the door, her father looking like he owns her, queasy stomach... sexual abuse by her father? Pregnant? Hmmm... definitely not my usual type of reading, but I'll see where this goes...

Hi NorthWind, I'm with u.

Hi NorthWind,

I'm with u. Now the father is looking to hard. Whats all that about? And I hate that we were left to think about what will happen next. They could have given us more details, but i guess thats the good part. Because it keeps you coming back for more. I hope that it get better in the next few chapters.

~Jeria22~

It seems like the help around the house always know a lot more than they're telling. So what's her story?

Don't know if she's

Don't know if she's pregnant, but I was thinking abuse though not necessarily sexual...   I'm with you on reading for escaping the yuck in life...   I'll try another chapter...

i also considered the abuse

i also considered the abuse factor-especially since the youngest daughter must feel like she's not loved as much   i love scary stories!

Hmmm, maybe she should talk

Hmmm, maybe she should talk to Esme...    her dad is creepy!

yep daddy's a creep

But maybe boarding school is the best thing for the sister, given what he's doing now. Maybe boarding school is what keeps her safe. Guess I need to get the book!

well i just read the first 4 chapters. boy is this intense, evil yes. if she is young and pregnant and in school, what kind of romance is there that could last? this curtis kid/young man? the father or is the father - the father? and wondering if the younger girl is not his or just because he has no "foundness" for her that is what makes her not important to the father.

well , diffinetly different. have not read oen of these in awhile. or if i did at all. wonder what year this is in?

Whats Next!!

Ok! Just finish the fourth chapter. The father seems to be a control freak. He wants things his way and only his way. If not theirs hell to pay! I hope he's not have any sexual relations with his daughter. I really don't know. Lets see what he next chapter will hold. Oh! and why are the chapters so short.

Sounds Like a Good Suspense Story,I Read All 4 chapters The same night On March 13&14 thru the Night And I have already have a Feeling it might of been the father who Kill Rachel ,But who knows? And to me its not all That scary. But I Like the Story Already And I Love Mystery and Suspense,I am Not hot about the Romance and I have 2 books I got a Year ago and I had stop reading it and it was getting Boring and I was Browsing this site and read a Caption of this Book Online here and found out the story was Free and how many chapters it had and I am also reading a Harlequin>Intrigue>Compromise Security and I am On Chapt 10,Please don't tell me what happens at the end if you read this book or not.Thank you!.

Devils Footprints

Bonita, my understanding is that this a prequel to the Devil's footprints. In the Devil's footprints, they're searching for her killer.

Too Dark

I have to agree with katiepatie, I read to escape and with all this dark depressing stuff I don't feel like there is much escape right now.  First Street Life, now this and the weekly read isn't a whole lot better.Undecided

marked by evil

okay, not much home life in ch 5 but more on the school and "friends" or wanna bes. well just have to keep reading. although when dream mentioned killer being looked for in next devils footprints in a previous post- that does not sound like a happy ending yet.

This is so sad and

This is so sad and depressing. Not even a scary story that we all get a thrill from, not mysterious. Blehh...I am done reading it!

OK MY Second feeling who might of Kill Rachel

OK I have Read 5 & 6 Chapters And Wow !! And didn't know That Curtis is Obessed with her and her Father Killing! But who Really Kill Rachel ? Her Dad or her crazy boyfriend and If I had a boyfriend like Curtis I would lose him In a second, he is Wack O !! and if he said he Loves her why won't he respect her wishes. And We know That Derrick isn't a kind of person who wouldn't hurt Rachel although he Like her Very Much Over her Sister Sarah!! So MY 2 clues of the murders would be is her Dad or Curtis,But Have to read More of the next Chapter Next week,This Book is Good so farCool And as of now I just order 2 free new books of mira suspense storys and can't wait to get them soon after I finish My Other book!

still not much closer to knowing

i don't think this is moving too fast- kind of choppy- but slow, even if it is a short story.

i believe dear ole daddy has some back at ya coming to him. i don't think there is enough there yet to know about mamma (other then probably daddy did it) almost like a law and order or more to this story line.

i don't mind suspense and love those tv shows. horror is not my thing. but suspense is alright. romance and paranormal are alot better.

boyfriend seems very nice- he could be the one to do the dad in at the end- if daddy buys the farm ( and i hope he does at this point in the story and the creepy wanna be boyfriend( but his may be just looks and gangish)

well got to go- next chapter could easily change my whole thoughts on the story.

tina

Love your horse. ride safely.

Not sold on the boyfriend

He seems protective, but in a good way... I wonder what the secret they're referring to is.

boyfriend

i just read the latest chapter. not to much to go on yet.

boyfriend - could be the girls baby father if she is pregnant and it is not daddy sunshine's.

so the girls are not full sisters.  other then rivals for affection- i still can't see what affection there is to fight over. the younger will have to learn the hard way then that daddy loves alot does not love.

well need to wait for next chapter again. this is so like another that had such a quick ending and sort of surprising.

tina

Love your horse. ride safely.

There was No action On this Chapter today!

There was No action On this Chapter today! But I am Curious about the Dad and how could he send Sarah away to a school and Not Rachel and if rachel wasn't behaving as well she'll probley be sent away wiyh her Sister and the Father is sneaky..

P,s I Like the ideal That Anne is catching up On the story here Faster and we don't have to wait for another week for the next suspense chapter, I Think I would Love to read more of this story And can't wait for more this thursday !! its getting better each Chapter. although this Chapter was slow today...Embarassed But I Like the sound of the title of this book! .. And I also can't wait until they have another FreeSuspense story ... Nest Month or So!

sarah

i just read the next few chapters. getting to know the sister Sarah a bit better, not sure if she is a strong issue to the end result but it is rounding out the story better.

tina

Love your horse. ride safely.

Creepy

The dead bird is really creepy... ugh! I think I'd be more than a little freaked out by now. And it's not like she has anyone to turn to for help. I'm kinda sad for her that this is how the end of her life plays out.

is the next chapter the end

is the next chapter the end of her life then?

Yes its get Creepy I say And Has Sarah Really set Her Sister up To get her Kill just Over her Old Dog . will she stoop That Low to get Rachel back. Thats Ashame . But I Am sure That Sarah doesn't mean to kill her sister or have her Kill ,I think she just wants to scare Rachel. So I say does Rachel dies in The Farmhouse And who is The person above..scaring Rachel? I don't think its Sarah.Because Sarah is the one is finding out who kill Her Sister . This Story is getting Very Interested so far..

bonita61

Definitely getting spooky

It's so hard when you start liking a character... I know she's going to die in the end, but wow...

I wish she'd be content to mind her own business. Probably someone else in the story thinking that too...

rachel dies?

well that is a bummer. what about sarah? i would think at this point that she is haveing her sister rachel killed. or scared badly.

well is sarah is abad apple with no hope of getting or wanting to be better- it is a shame that rachel tried to help her.

still leaves the dad somewhere like maybe how sarah could be the way she is? and just not treated that way.

tina

Love your horse. ride safely.

I don't know though...

Sarah is the heroine of the book, so she can't be the bad guy, can she?

Coming into the dark....

Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to the fact that this was a prequel and that it blatantly says "the last days of Rachel's life." I've gotten a bit of a surprise which sent me running to this forum. First of all, I was jolted by the shift from Rachel's point of view to Sarah's. Still shaking my head on that one. You'll have to thank my Seminar class in college on novels for always paying attention to how many POV's authors use in a book. Now that we're sitting here, I'm interested to know how the last few chapters are to be handled.

I personally love thrillers. I hang on to things like the movie "Gothika" and books like the teen novels by R.L. Stine (Goosebumps & Fear Street). I found a set of Harlequin Intrigue when I was 12 and fell in love.

I was a little shocked and disappointed to find our main character die after spending so much time in her head. I think if the author had spent a little more time in Sarah's head, I might not feel so bitter toward the novel in coming where we don't have Rachel anymore. Granted at the same time, the attachment to Rachel could help in wanting to solve her demise and thus read on. It's a caculated risk. This prequel has alienated us from what seems to be the ongoing character. Unless she's not the ongoing character.

In reading the other comments on this, I think I missed Rachel being pregnant. huh? I know that there is serious bad things going on in that house, but I must have missed the signs of that. I will have to reread I guess.

Boy, do I talk a lot!

sarah

okay i agree with Joliz except that i did read on my last posting about rachel being killed. i just assumed with not reading the other book/s. that rachel was the main character and not sarah. which really puts a shift in the story.

now that Sarah is the main character- i really hope she figures life out fast and gets out of what she is into. which it sounds like she is starting to think for a change and not just act.

 tina

Love your horse. ride safely.

Yikes!!

I guess I wasn't expecting her to die so soon. I feel bad for Sarah, because you know the fallout for finding her sister won't be good.

I'm with you, Dream

Poor Rachel and Sarah...  I definitely wasn't expecting Rachel to die this soon.  I thought maybe it would happen in the last chapter, and leave us hanging.

Sarah will have to grow up fast now.  Between the shock of Rachel's death and what will happen at home when good old daddy finds out what happened to his favorite, she is being forced to grow up.

Too weird for words

I agree with the folks who think this is way to dark of a story for fun reading.  Also with the ones who read for escape from reality.  I really didn't like Street Life, no ending at all really.

This one feels like we've got an father who is sexually abusing his oldest daughter.  The absent mother, the Princess comments, diamond earrings, his theats over her relationship with Curtis all point to an abusive relationship.

Curtis sounds like he knows what Rachel's father is up to and wants to put a permanent end to the problem, which also would tie into sexual abuse.

In a way this reminds me of the TV show Twin Peaks, which was all about who killed Laura.  Turns out it was her abusive father in some sort of demonic possession who killed her in the end.

I doubt I'll read Devil's footprints, but it will be interesting to see who did kill Rachel.

Amanda,    I realize that

Amanda,

I realize that you're working under a specific word count, but I was hoping for a bit more than that! Sigh. Way to leave us hanging... :( I too assumed that the cliffhanger at the end of the on-line read would be Sarah's death. I'm curious to find out what will occur in the last two chapters. I normally don't buy Harlequins - as a college student I can't really afford to indulge in buying tons of books for pleasure from both a constraint timewise (I would spend all day reading instead of studying!) and financially - but I just might have to order this one! Keep up the good work!   ~Kit

I guess now I need to get

I guess now I need to get the book because I want to know how Sarah solves the mystery of her sister's killing.

That was some read

Well, I knew Sarah wouldn't die, since the next book was about how she solves her sister's murder. But wow... that's pretty creepy that no one else knew of the existence of Ashe. I've got the book on order, so I can't wait until it gets here.

Yes I agree with ya Dream, I Enjoy it And its shame it Ended And let me know what happens if you like to share it with us. I don't think That Sarah ever would kill her sister And Wonder if Ashe Really is Real person or could he be ? .

And will Sarah be put away In a special school by her Father ? And Hope Sarah does find out who Kill Rachel. Well Happy Reading Dream, Enjoy The Book when you get it Ok!

I finally Got the time to Read the Last 4 chapters today !! Yahooooooooooooo!!It was a Great Example to Read for awhile!.
