Mavis, congrats! Choose your book from the three at the bottom of this post and
email me at christine@christinerimmer.com with your choice and your mailing address. Thanks, everybody. I had a great time as always!
So am I weird?
Don’t answer yet.
I fell in love for the first time when I was eleven. I mean totally. Passionately. Completely.
Over the moon and around the bend.
With a character in a novel. Oh, yeah!
The novel was Little Men by Louisa May Alcott and the character was Dan, a boy of “about fourteen,” (he wasn’t sure of his age; his parents were dead and he’d lived on the streets all his life—oh, be still, my beating heart!)
Dan is introduced in Chapter Six, which is titled, “A Firebrand.” Oh, yeah. Oh, my…
Alcott first describes him as, “a most unprepossessing boy, who slouched in and stood looking about him, with a half bold, half sullen look, which made Mrs. Bhaer say to herself, after one glance,–‘A bad specimen, I am afraid.’”
From that moment, when Dan slouched in, I was gone. I couldn’t help myself. Sometimes love’s just that way, you know? I filled pages and pages of my diary with Dan. Dan, Dan, Dan. I made up a life with him. I loved him unconditionally. And it was through my undying love (well, I mean, it lasted till I was twelve and read Gone with the Wind and met Rhett. That’s pretty “undying” for a preteen, I’d say) And where was I? Oh, right. It was through my undying love that Dan came to find his place in the world and his power as a man.
After Dan and Rhett, there were others. Each was forever. But you know, eventually, I’d read another book with a fabulous hero. And that would be that. I’d be on to a new fantasy life with my new guy.
Interestingly enough, it was always the bad, slouchy boys I went for—in fiction and in whatever this thing is they call “real” life. As I remarked to my cousin, Gail, when I was thirteen, “Isn’t it strange how delinquent boys are so much more interesting than good ones?”
When I got around to dating guys I hadn’t “met” in books, it was always the bad boys I went after. Sadly enough, I learned the hard way that “real” bad boys aren’t always quite so willing to be transformed by love. Their loss. And eventually I met the DH—aka Hunky Mensa Man. It all worked out. He’s totally untamable—except in his love for me!
So am I weird? If so, feel free to tell me. OTOH, you could tell me which “fictional” heroes have stolen your heart. I’d just love to meet them…
And this time I'm giving away your choice of my books so far this year--THE STRANGER AND TESSA JONES or THE BRAVO BACHELOR or A BRAVO'S HONOR. Leave a comment here Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. I'll draw a winner Friday morning. Oh, and if you've read them all--bless you! And if you're the winner, we'll figure out something else.

I agree about the bad boys
I agree about the bad boys in real life not living up to their fictional peers. I have never fallen in lurve with a fictional hero. But I saw Purple Rain eleven times when it came out. I just lurved Prince. Does that count?

Ooohh. LOVE this
blog!
I'm afraid that I'm not as willing to give up the various and sundry 'love of my life' fictional men. I mean, love is never-ending, right? And I've got LOTS of room in my heart... uh imagination for 'em all.
Anne Stuart'sMan, there's something about that guy that STILL get my engine revving... Uh, TMI? Sorry...
There've been sundry other fictional loves... but these three are the ones that stand out in my mind... and not a 'bad boy' in sight.
But I do agree that those rake / rogues turned H are deliciously yummy... just not the love of my life.
* ~ * ~ *~ * ~ * ~ *~ * ~ * ~ *~ * ~ * ~ *~
Oh and Christine, I've got all three in my STBR (soon-to-be-read) ... along with a couple of your older books... Looking forward to them!

No
No, you're not weird. The first "fictional" character for me was a kid in a Kids R Us ad. The second was Lance from Voltron. The third, which still persists to this day, is Gerald Tarrant from C.S.Friedman's Black Sun Rising.
Shelli
Not weird at all
You are definitely not weird. I have loved several romance heroes from the books I have read. Two that come to mind are Lisa Kleypas' Derek Craven and Elizabeth Hoyt's Edward de Raaf.
Hmm, there are so many
Hmm, there are so many -- The Scarlet Pimpernel was one of my favorites, I often imagined that I was off on his grand adventures with him, of course I was smarter and braver than Margauritte. Almanzo Wilder, if only because, I imagined that I was Laura. My first young adult hero love was Ethan from Nora's Chesapeake series, loved him. Oh, and who can forget the Hardy boys. Both in TV and book fame. I guess for me, it was never the bad boy, more likely the spy, the cop or the boy next door. Not surprising that my hubby is a pretty responsible guy.
Cady (already have the books, so skip me for the contest)
TBR--The Born Readers
Of course you're weird...
But not because of your bad-boy hero worship
. And I say hallelujah to that, my friend.
As for fictional heroes, I think Ruark Beauchamp is my #1, Woodiwiss of course. Rhett was my early hero, too, and all the teenage heroes from the books of my junior high school reading--the ones from First Kiss, and Senior Prom, and other such gems that I devoured. And I love Roark of JD Robb fame, too. Yum.
Oh, and Clay Barrett from your FOR THE BABY'S SAKE. What a man!

As a youngster, I never
As a youngster, I never read about heroes that made my heart go pitty pat. Don't know why -- perhaps I just wasn't reading the right books -- but the heroes in books just didn't do it for me. I did have my unconditional loves, though, mostly from the entertainment world. I was nuts about Ilya Kuryakin (David McCallum, and love him now as "Ducky" on NCIS) in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Can't remember exactly when that was on the air, but I'm thinking I was maybe 8. At around 11, I was pretty sure I was someday going to be Mrs. Davy Jones. Ha!
The first fictional hero I fell in love with was Rouark Beauchamp in Shanna. I love many fictional heroes in stories, but I didn't just want to see him succeed with the heroine. I wanted him -- period. Another was Mick Harding from Mallory Burgess's Beloved Heart. In recent years, the list has gotten longer as my DD got older and left me with more time to devote to reading, such as Rob Sutter from Rachel Gibson's The Trouble with Valentine's Day, Ty Savage from Gibson's new True Love and Other Disasters, Arch Duvall from Beth Ciotta's Chameleon Chronicles series, and the list goes on and on.

heroes we love
I was talking on someone else's blog about books that stay with us and I said Anne of green Gables is one of them. I love Anne but i LOVED Gilbert from the moment he pulled Anne's hair and called her "Carrots" then she promptly breaks her slate over his head! I still to this day adore Gilbert.
Then there is Roland Deshain from The Dark Tower. I still am madly in love with him. I'm just copying and pasting part of my comment there to here since i spelled it out there why I love him... He's one of the most flawed characters I've ever come across in reading but i think that just makes him more special to me. He lost his love at a young age and has never been able to love another woman like he did that one. He's obsessed with his quest for the Dark Tower and catching the Man in Black. He will let nothing stand in his way, even to the point he let a young boy in his charge die because to save him would've meant delaying his chase after the MiB. But even knowing he's done so many bad things as he has and that he essentially murdered Jake by not helping him, I just love him to pieces. I think part of it is because in spite of doing all the things he has, he never loses his feelings of remorse that he didn't do it differently, even though he (and we) know he'd do the exact same thing again if he had to.
Then there is Jamie Fraser from Outlander. He's my hero! Such an incredible man that he makes a wonderful character.
I joke all the time that my ideal man in RL would be a blend of these three men. Gilbert! Roland! Jamie! *sigh* Just don't make me choose between them because I think that is impossible for me.

I don't think I've ever
I don't think I've ever fallen in love with a hero in any of the books I've read. Don't get me wrong, I loved them in the books, but I've never wanted to live with them after the story was over. Perhaps because as soon as I finish a book I pick up another one.
I've never liked bad boys in real life. My husband is as straight as they come and I love that.

Not weird at all......but me......
Chrstine you're not weird at all - but me - not so sure! I fall in love with every 'Presents and Blaze' hero I meet on the pages of a book and then to top it all I'm a 'Bond' girl......those guys just leave a girl weak - and then there's 'Mr Big' my SATC hero.......I mean what's not to like? In fact, set me in front of a chick flick and I'm gone......every time...........just a sucker for a good looking hero

I feel like we have had this
I feel like we have had this conversation in another blog somewhere, but Dan's mine. I'm sure I met him first and that is true of Rhett and Gilbert, too, BTW.

So, no you are not weird.
I have had some other fictional characters that touched me, but it must be my age, I no longer 'fall in love' with them.
Yes, that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

OH. MY. GOSH!
Another Illya Kuryakin fan! I was sooooooooo in love with him, and then I discovered Bond. James Bond. And I'm still in love with 007.
Not to be ugly, but Son of the Morning was written by a chapter mate of mine, Linda Howard. And he's a great character.
Sorry I've been absent. Lots of stuff going on plus my leg's been in a cast for the past 3 weeks. I have 2 1/2 more to go. It's been hotter than hades here and I try to do as little as possible so I don't sweat in the cast.

Heroes
I agree that Almanzo (Laura Ingalls Wilder) and the Hardy Boys along with several long forgotten fictional heroes captured my imagination when I was quite young. More recently I have been touched by the strength, compassion and wisdom of Roark (JD Robb), Chase and Lucky Tyler, as well as Harlan Boyd (all Sandra Brown).
It is funny how heroes tug at our emotional strings for differing reasons, because they are bad boys, heroic, lonely, scarred, healing, learning to love, tender, sentimental, compassionate, strong leaders, etc. They affect us differently and allow us to love them all equally for sharing a small glimpse of their personalities, experiences and worlds.

I don't think you are
I don't think you are totally weird. I think I have actually fallen in love with Edward Cullen. (Twilight series!) He is so cute, I have read the book and actully re- read 4times! I never re-read(Knowingly)! I also watch the movie at leat once a week. Who knew -- a vampire could be sooo sexy!
Well, maybe I'm not as weird as I thought...
So good to know!
FF, okay. Purple Rain. Loved that. Loved Prince in that phase. Kind of a “new romantics” thing he had going on then. I loved the album, too—and the one that came right after it. There is a bad boy who is also so sensitive. Very compelling in a guy…
Kalyko, well, see. You are so much truer-hearted than I. In real life, I’m totally loyal. But my fictional loves burn hot—and end much too fast. And you have this year's books already? How lovely.
Shelli, I do get a thrill over male models and some actors. I adore Rusty Joiner—no, not a porn star. A model, mostly for underwear and fitness gear. And some GQ-type ads. He’s so…blond and hot and…I don’t know. Focused, somehow.

More fictional lovers...
CrystalGB--Good ones! Kleypas always writes exciting, intriguing, fall-in-lova-able heroes.
Cady, interesting. You go for the guy who enters the burning building to save lives. What you might call the real, straight-ahead kind of hero. You know, now you write about them, I love those too.
Ah, Susan. That’s a true friend, someone who puts up with all of it, which can be totally…weird! Roark is probably getting the most votes, overall. I so get why. He’s dangerous and also a protector. What’s not to love? And oh, yes. Clay. Thank you! There was a responsible guy, not a “bad boy” at all. I loved him, too. But then, I love all the men I tell stories about.
JV, so you’ve grown into a true love of fictional heroes. Hey. Works for me. And another Roark makes the list—okay, a Rouark. Different spelling. But when you mentioned Shanna, I enjoyed a soft sigh. I liked him a lot, too. Shanna, though…she was a bit annoying.

You guys make me remember some great heroes I had forgotten...
How could that have happened??
Kelley, I loved Roland. I read three of the Dark Tower books and mostly because if him. He has that young Clint Eastwood thing going on, IMO. Oh, and Jamie! How could I have forgotten Jamie. The virgin hero who is also a great lover. Now, there’s a guy I would go across time for!
Kathleen, and you make perfect sens--also, your husband sounds like a true hero to me!
Mavis, about Daniel Craig. I lurve Daniel Craig. I don’t care if he’s playing James Bond or that guy from Defiance or a drug dealer. He’s just hot and tortured and somehow so…ethical!
Nancy--but you can't have Dan. And Rhett. I adore Rhett. Oh, nooooo!
Oh, Marilyn. A cast on your leg in summer heat! Big hugs—and lots of cool drinks and breezes to match. At least you’re past the halfway mark. And your chapter mate does write some of the best heroes going!

Crystal, speaking of Sandra Brown…I adored Lucas Greywolf, from an Intimate Moments she wrote as Erin St. Clair back in the day. I read that book over and over and over…just to get some more time with Lucas.
FF, awww.
Cweber, I’ve been waiting for someone to mention Edward. He’s the perfect vampire hero, I think. So dangerous to her—and so totally devoted to her welfare at the same time.

I loved Ruark Beauchamp as well, but my very favorite invisible man is another of Woodiwiss's men, Beau Birmingham.. I just love, love, loved him. I loved Ruark but could not stand Shanna, she was annoying. Beau's leading lady was lovely, sweet and innocent. I love them together but I want him for myself too lol.

“fictional” heroes
Weird? Of course not! “Fictional” heroes who have stolen my heart? Well, Roarke (in Death series) is one of them.
Oh Marilyn... I cannot BELIEVE
that I said AS instead of Linda Howard when I mentioned Black Niall from Son of the Morning. I know better... truly I do 'cause I read that book at least once a year!

Let me count the ways in which I feel stupid....
Of course thinking Linda Howard then I of course remembered Marc Chastain (Kill and Tell) and who could forget John Medina (All the Queen's Men). He and Niema... wow!
And now, I can scrounge up a wet noodle... fifty lashes?

I'm weird too!
One name... two words... forever etched in a secret place way down deep in the adolescent melodramatic soap opera classic part of my heart:
Mr. Rochester
I will always and forever love Mr.Rochester. You can keep Mr.Darcy in his own corner of England's verdant castles, but give me flawed, arrogant, scandalized, desperate, rugged and serious Mr. Rochester.
I would read Jane Eyre first thing every summer, staying up late to read and re-read their love story. When Jane returns, and he's blind, and begins to learn that she's come back to him, and he touches her face and says "My Jane....," swoon! Masterpiece Theatre even did an excellent job of making it into a film.
I know Austen's Pride and Prejudice is favored 99 to 1 to Bronte's Jane Eyre, but that flawed alpha named Mr. Rochester will always have a little piece of my heart.
Funny... I can't remember his first name, or if he even has a first name. Jane always called him Mr. Rochester.
Edward...
Mr. Rochester's name is Edward.... and I, quietly, adore him... and rejoiced when Jane came back to him.
He will always remain a favourite ~ as is Jane Eyre (the book)... Of course Jane is an amazing woman as well... and she and Edward totally deserve to be endlessly happy.
*sigh*
I can feel a re-read coming on.

Imaginary Lovers
Hi!
My favourite is Jamie Fraser from Outlander.
Thank You kalyko!
I thought it was, but couldn't be 100% sure....
My copy of Jane Eyre is long gone, but I'm sure the local library has a copy. Do try to catch it on Masterpiece if you get that; it really was well done.
Re: Jane Eyre ~ Masterpiece Theatre
Tappitytaptap... Oh I'm going to be looking for it that's for sure.
My youngest daughter read Jane Eyre in English 20 (gr.11) last month; I was so happy for her! Not sure she was as excited though.
But she and two of her classmates received an excellent mark on their JE project.

Linda Howard and Mr. Rochester...
Kalyko, another of my true literary loves was the hero of Howard’s Duncan’s Bride—an IM from way back. I will never forget that lovemaking scene in the back of the pickup. Be still my beating heart!
Tappitytaptap, Mr. Rochester! Oh, yes. I so loved Jane Eyre and Mr. R’s brooding passion just really worked for me. Though I confess to a slight crush on Mr. Darcy, as well. He loved Elizabeth so much and was so bad at expressing it. Until he took action to save he family’s good name. You wrote: You can keep Mr.Darcy in his own corner of England's verdant castles. I got a chuckle from that. So well said! Loved the bit about “his own corner of England’s verdant castles.”

As a youngster, I'm another Almonzo Wilder fan, as a teenager it was Todd in the SVH series, later, Deke in Janet Dailey's TERMS OF SURRENDER, and Caine in Nora Roberts TEMPTING FATE.

Tammy

Kalyko! Giggles about your daughter's assignment to read J.E.
My son, 17, had to read Wuthering Heights for English Lit. It was Torture with a capital T! He would probably vote to tuck Heathcliff & Catherine away with the Darcy's. Far far away.
I must find this Roark (sp) hero.... is this book still in print or do I need to research it from a used bookseller?
Tapitytap
The book featuring Ruark Beauchamp as the hero is still available. The name of the book is Shanna and the author is Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. I believe most of her books are still available at places like Barnes and Noble. I guess I differ in my opinion of the heroine, Shanna. I loved her and didn't find her annoying at all. She was a bit spoiled, though.

Anne & Gilbert Update!
Remembered that were a LOT of Gilbert Blythe fans on this forum so thought you would all be interested in a little update. Last night my daughter and I went to "Anne and Gilbert: The Musical" in Summerside, PEI, Canada. OMG!! While only in its 5th season it is the most critically acclaimed new musical in Canada and after taking part in opening night I can understand why. The music, the costumes, the lyrics, the laughter, the tears!!! Gilbert was amazing and our hearts went out to him as we watch his efforts to achieve a HEA with his redheaded heroine them as teenagers teaching school and then as college freshmen. SIGH!!
And if you ever get a chance to watch this production on PEI or in a theatre near you it is a must see! My hats off to the writers Jeff Hochhauser, Bob Johnston, and Nancy White as well as the incredible cast that portrayed these characters with such skill and ease!
