The Valentine Curse and other Valentine's Day thoughts

Valentine's Day and Valentine nightmares...

Vaentine's Day traditionally has been a day I dread. If I was dating anyone at the time, poof the Valentine's day break up! I guess the worst was the phone call break-up when I was at my dad's house and then having to keep a smile on my face because my dad and step-mom were having a small party. To rub it in even more, I received a Valentine's card with all these insincere sentiments days later.

This Valentine's Day, I am mostly grateful I am not dating! My biggest fantasy is to turn off the computer and have a meal at home and maybe do a fruit and chocolate fondue in this nice heart-shaped fondue set. A snow storm that made it impossible to go out and a fire in the fireplace would be nice start.

So, I guess I would like maybe ask others if they have any fun Valentine nightmare stories to tell.

What kind of Valentine read suits you the most? Sexy, sweet? Traditional or offbeat? Romance or a creepy suspense read? I think maybe I would pick Beth Ciotta's Everyone Loves Evie if I had not already read it. It has just the right offbeat mix to suit me and shake up the traditional idea of romance but still has a tender sentimental element. If I wasn't married ir dating, I would want to spend the day having fun with friends like Evie. Evie's crazy and fun antics would make Valentine's a total blast.

Maybe I should add to the question with what Harlequin character(s) you
would want to spend Valentine's Day? Choosing a hero as a date or a
heroine if one is solo or vice versa for the men bloggers. Beth Ciotta's Evie for fun if I was single and unattached ---- but for a date...that's a tough one. If I was in a medieval mode, Benedict from Carol Townend's An Honorable Rogue or maybe some modern day real guy from my Harlequin Romance reads or on a paranormal bent, Lori Devoti's heroes or the hero in Michele Hauf's Familiar Stranger.  The docotrs in the Medicals if I were on an expedition or in a hurricane/wild fire emergency.  I just haven't decided yet which hero really strikes my fancy.

hmmm...and who would be the dud date like in that game Mystery Date? I'll
have to think on that one but suspense might be a good genre for that
one. Maybe one of Rita Herron's villains --- any of them might turn the day into a nightmare.

The most demented one...

was when I went to the movies with a boyfriend and we saw, of all things, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, for Valentine's Day!  Yikes!  Otherwise, not sure I can think of any weird or odd Vday tales....

oh my!

Oh my...what a movie for Valentines! I cannot bring myself to even watch that one. I think if a date took me to that one it might be me saying good-bye.

Well, this has nothing to

Well, this has nothing to do with dating or romance but one Valentine's Day years ago, I went with my mom to the vet to put her beloved kitty to sleep. I think about that every Valentine's, even when I have a nice one.

Dh and I normally haven't done anything special for any Valentine's since we've been together. No reason. We don't think it's just a commercial day. I wonder why we haven't ever done anything.  Hmmm...

My husband broke up with me

My husband broke up with me on our first Valentine's.  I don't know if we were moving too fast or what, but got the break-up speech, of course we got back together about a week later, but it was a memorable one.   We don't celebrate much anymore.  We use to go get massages together, but with the kids that has basically been eliminated.  This year, I think we are meeting for lunch - no kids.

On Valentine's day 1998 DH and I decided to have a nice

dinner in a country hotel and stay the night and when we got to the
dining room the hotel owner said we could have any table except one -
there was an engagement ring "hiding" in one of the serviettes at that
special table

The enterprising boyfriend had decided to pop the question for Valentine's day

except the lady wasn't particularly interested Foot in mouth

the ring was the wrong size Frown

she didn't actually like the ring Undecided

but she liked the ring more than she liked the boyfriend Surprised

We've often wondered whether they made it to the altar and if so, how long the marriage lasted?

Ten years on, DH and I are still together Smile and we still laugh about that cringe-worthy Valentine's day dinner Laughing

V-day

For our first Valentine's Day together, my boyfriend decided it would be so romantic to drive up the coast of California.  200 miles away.   We had a nice day, but the fun started when we tried to find a hotel room for the night.  Every hotel we tried was full (Mr. Spontaneus doesn't believe in RESERVATIONS and it was Valentine's Day weekend!)   We drove for hours finally found a room at a Super 8 motel  50 miles away.  I did end up marrying this guy and now I make all our travel plans and reservations!

"now I make all our travel plans"

Sounds like a good idea to me Wink

Valentine's Day

One of my favorite memories of Valentine's Day was in 2004 when it snowed most of that day.  Both of my boys bundled up and made a snowman and had snowball fights.  It was fun.

I've gotten those "love coupons" before as a gift for hubby.  Last year, I bought those red rose petals in a box.  Those are an easy and fun way to set a romantic mood.

This year, he'll be getting a DVD.  I accidentally messed up his recording of The World's Fastest Indian when it was on tv the other day and he wasn't too happy about it, so I decided right then that I'd just get him the DVD as a gift.

Oh, and what Harlequin character would I want to spend Valentine's Day with?  Hmm...I can't think of a specific hero at the moment, but maybe one of those rugged cowboys.

Great stories.  I am still

Great stories.  I am still decinding on the Harlequin Valentine hero's choice.  Rugged cowboys with a code of honor are always great....but which one?

Valentine's Day

Dh and I have been married 16 yrs.  He hasn't got an imaginative bone in his body and the same can be said for romance.

One year,  he gave me a black mohair sweater for Christmas.  I loved it but the dang thing made me sneeze like crazy.  lol

For V Day that year, I bought a large choc. heart wrapped in red foil.  I spread the black sweater on the kitchen table and placed the big red heart on a sleeve.  Was amazed dh got it without my having to explain.  lol

Valentines Day

We've never really celebrated Valentines Day the way some couples do.  Not sure why... I guess because we give each other gifts all year long so it's not something extra we do.

Still thinking on who I'd pick to spend the day with out of a Harlequin tale.  Definitely not the guy in the one I just finished~ David from HAUNTED by Lisa Childs is TOO intense.  I liked the book, but his intensity would be overpowering for me.

too intense

I know what you mean on too intense...can be nice to have an intense read but if I had to live with some of the heroes in reads I like...well, NO THANKS!

Alpha Men

I love reading books with alpha men.  But, truth be told, I'd probably go nuts if I was married to one.  Nice to read but live with one?  No thanks!

Debbie, cool that you and dh share gifts thru out the year.  Dh and I were like that in the first few yrs of our marriage.  Things changed after ds came along and, 11 yrs later, we've yet to recover.  Since dh is "romantically challanged", it's more my fault than his.  Having ds on top of life in general made a romance too much like work for me.  If dh misses it, he's never said.  But I sure miss it.  Wish dh would make an effort from time to time.  <sigh>

Valentines Day

Okay, still haven't decided on who as a Harlequin character but I know who otherwise... Harry Dresden.  He is truly my hero in books.  He wants to do the right thing and tries to do so, even when he know it costs him.  There is one incident that solidified it for me but I can't reveal it due to spoilers... but those familiar with the books should know what I mean when I say Laschiel (spelling?).

I think having kids would make it hard to keep that same balance as it would change things.  You have others who depend on you both and that takes priority.

Valentine's Heros

Well, count out Amanda Stevens' villains for a Valentine's Date! Right now I would sat Carol Townend's Benedict....he could recite to me Old French literature! Otherwise, still tryng to decide between cowboys.
