I didn't intend to like hockey. A friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer quite a few years ago and wanted to go to the Tampa Bay Lightning games to get her mind off of things. That first season, well, our team stunk and I don't think her cancer let her make a single game. But I fell in love with the sport. I started out looking for the big name players on other teams~ oh how excited I was to see Mario play the first time! And then it happened.... the Tampa Bay Lightning started winning. No one could believe it, not the ESPN analysts, not even the fans necessarily. I remember the game when I knew, KNEW that we would one day win it all... it was a game we were hopelessly behind in and then suddenly we were scoring and we won! My friend who has cancer was there and it was one of those magical moments, a moment when anything seemed and was possible.
Last night we went to a game. We haven't been in awhile; we went for a few games after we won the Stanley Cup (had to see the banner being raised!) but somehow the magic was gone. Nothing compared to that Stanley Cup run... we went to almost, if not all, the home games that year. Cheered, screamed, chanted, and prayed for wins. We were there for each playoff game, each moment leading up to that final game 7 when yes, we won it all! We were Stanley Cup Champions, each and every one of us! We watched Kuby, Richie, Vinny, Marty and the rest as they raised the Cup in victory. I hardly slept that night but I made it into work the next day... much to the surprise of my coworkers. But heck, I wanted to talk about it, to continue celebrating that the championship was OURS. My friend with cancer couldn't make that game but you bet she was watching and yes, we were on the phone and at work celebrating our victory. Anything seemed possible on that magical night and during that entire magical season.
But back to last night...our team is minus Kuby and a few others. No Bulin Wall. Richie, Vinny, and Marty are still there but there is talk of trading one of them. We're in last place in our division and barely out of last place in the whole league. We only went because the tickets were free~ and we went with my friend who started it all. Yes, she still has cancer but she is still kicking. We cheered, screamed and prayed again last night as just for one night, yes, that magic was there again.

I love Hockey
but I really like to go to the games. The games are so much more exciting in person. I follow our Dallas Stars not as much this year as in past.

Going to the games...
There is just something different about the whole atmosphere of going to a game versus watching it on tv, isn't there?

Yes, this is a wonderful post .....
As kids we were huge hockey fans .... it was our "Leafs" against those "Red Wings" or the "Bruins" or the "Canadiens" ...... or it was sitting glued to the t.v. as Canada beat the Russians! .... oh how we celebrated that one ..... and when the games were on during a school day, the principal broadcast the games over the PA so we could all cheer ....
but as a grown up, I sort of lost interest .... I went to one Leaf game at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto that was eons ago .... and yes, indeed the games are much more exciting when you see them in person ...... I adore going to a live baseball game, though since the strike in the 90's that sort of spoiled the sport ... and maybe that's why I'm still not so enthused with hockey these days ...
there is indeed a certain magic though when your team comes through for you while you are right there to cheer them on ...... and I'm glad you could experience that again with your friend

RE:HOCKEY ~~ ALWAYS LOVED IT
Started out doing it in neighborhood grunge matches when I was four -- and not at an indoor rink like today's kids do ~~ it was an iced-over pond in the back on our farm. But we lived in Red Wings territory and close enough to Canada where their love for the sport spilled over to where we live. I still play and watch ~~ especially after making it to the Winter Olympics for hockry.

hockey
Oh, I can't even imagine having the principal play the games over the pa system! How very cool! And ahhh... the Leafs... a team I LOVE for us to beat!
I used to love going to baseball games as well. I grew up as an Atlanta Braves fan (I lived in SC) but now we mainly get the Tampa team and they are just terrible; some of the mistakes they make... oh, it's like watching the old Braves!! I remember the night the Braves moved into first place in their division~ the year we started out as cellar dwellers. I was at the college (I think I was visiting but it was the same college I graduated from) and the excitement and screams of joy were heard all over the place. Another magical moment.... Which baseball team do you cheer for, Katherine?
Did I read that correctly, Hockeyjock? You went to the Winter Olympics? I bet that was an experience!

There's just something
special when you're sitting in on the game. I love going to Baseball, Basketball, or Hockey games. I've hated being in the stadium for the Cowboys Football games. It is much easier to watch football on TV. I love sports and if I can't be there in person then television is the next best thing.

RE: WINTER OLYMPICS
I was 4th...just in case 1sts, 2nds, or 3rds, got sick or something (of course, they never don't show up!) But of course, being in the running (1980) is really a feat in itself! A few years later (I forget the year), one of the track and field Air Force guys from Wurtsmith, who made it to the Summer Games , also a '4th', stayed at my place for a while. But then he was shipped off to Sarajevo (that's how long ago it was).
