Whats in a name?

 I posted this comment yesterday:

I have this horrible habit of giving  alliterative names to my characters. I had named my heroine Toni Taylor and decided to rename her.  In my sleepy state last night, I renamed her.  This morning I reread and realized I had named my heroine Toni Border which sounds like "tony bored her".  And yes, the Hero was named Anthony. LOL!!!  I swear I have a prankster for a muse! LOL!!

Over the years, I have read a lot of characters that their names did not fit or I found them cute. A dear friend of mine is named Fonda.  For a while she dated a guy with the last name of Peters. They did not get married, but with her first name, I told her she needs to choose wisely.

My late daddy used to have a list of names he thought were cute, such as Seymour Hiney, Rosie Butts, Needra Hare, I. P. Freely, Anita Break, Ima Good, Rob U. Good, etc.

Are there names you would like to see for a Hero or Heroine? Names you saw that sparked a chuckle? Are you named something you like or dislike? Is there a name over used in books?Laughing

Do the names in books ever turn you off?  Is names a hopt button for you?

Yes, I have been turned

Yes, I have been turned off by the name of a character in a book.  I know personally some names I am totally indifferent to.  While other names I immediately get a good or bad vibe from (in real life or from reading).  I detest the name Rodney.  Don't know why that name gives me the creeps.  It makes me think of rotten meat!

I try not to be to judgemental when it comes to names.  Mainly, because I have a weird first name. I read a lot of Harelequin Presents, and I notice a lot of the books set in London/Europe, have a lot of unusual names; well to me anyway.

ROFL ... I"m still chuckling! ....

This morning I reread and realized I had named my heroine Toni Border which sounds like "tony bored her".  And yes, the Hero was named Anthony. LOL!!!

ah, MJ!  .... what a delightful sharing!  .... you hit my funny bone at just the right moment and this one is going to stay with me for a long long time!

Your Toni Border  reminds me of Leno's Wedding Announcements on the Tonight Show  ........ I shudder for those poor people whose surnames get put on his show, but they are so hilarious!    ..... here are a few that are are showcased and that are a little less risque  Wink  ---- The Fite / Staab Wedding ---- the Miller / Bruski Wedding ---- DeMoney / Hyder Wedding ---- Tune / Narup Wedding ---- Gross / Panttii Wedding ---- Furr / Burns Wedding ---- Large / Tinkey Wedding

ROFL!   .... thanks for the laughs this morning!

Is a Rose is a Rose is a Rose?

Hi Betty:

For me names are important. Names carry “baggage”.  If an adult is named Vinny,  he better be in the mob. Bertha better be a big woman.  Reader’s will get a mental image from just a name. Sometimes this is a very strong image that could get in the way of the story you are trying to tell.

I like the game of coming up with married names. I cam up with this one:  If John Travolta married Olivia Newton John, she would be Olivia Newton John-Travolta.

 Thanks,

Vince

Then there are the ever

Then there are the ever famous sisters named Ima Hogg and Ura Hogg.  Laughing  Actually Ura did not exist.

A true teacher is a person who, at the end of the school day, still likes children!

And there are the real life Curtin family

who named their daughter Annette after the maiden aunt on her mother's side

Undecided

and the real-life firm of lawyers called Argue and Phibbs Foot in mouth

Lol!

Annette Curtain!

Sadhbh, those are funny.

Katherine  - I love the Jay Leno ones!

Vince - I agree, names can do me in when I am reading.

Rodney - When I hear the name I think of Rodney Dangerfield, the comic who said he "got no respect".

Ellen - A friend of mine went th Dr. Hogg and was saddened to share he was retiring.  One days she mentions in passing that her new Dr. was named Dr. Pigg.  I laughed and she did not see why!

Acocopuff - I agree some names are really intersting.  Once in a Betty Neels book, the Professor had several names, I can't remember exactly, but it was like... Professor norm von de embser. I messed up and pronounced it different ever time I read it. I was calling him Mr. V by the end of the book.Smile

Vince-

If Olivia Newton John, married  Elton John and Wayne Newton:

Whe would be Olivia Newton John John Newton.

Got Books?

Names...sigh

there are a couple other bloggs, where we were talking about names....

I said on one of them, that I hate on Soaps, when they name people after things:  Blade, Ridge, Thorne.

On another, blog I wrote how people I have known in life had had wierd/silly/stupid names.

There was twins, Indy and Pendence (they were born on the July 4).

Other Twins: Bruce and Wayne.

But I guess when you are writing, you have to consider the era.  My grandmother was born in 1906..her name was Gladys...her sisters,  Gertrude Hortense, Myrtle, Bertha and others (grandma was #14 out of 18 children).

Oh, one more name......I heard a rumor years ago, and I dont know if it is true....that  TV Producer Norman Lear named his daughter  Crystal Chanda.
