Guidelines For The New "Nocturne Bites"!

Nocturne Bites

Length: 10,000 – 15,000 words
Editorial Director: Tara Gavin
Associate Senior Editor: Ann Leslie Tuttle
Assistant Editor: Sean Mackiewicz

Silhouette Nocturne is looking to acquire paranormal editorial with strong sexual, fantasy and danger elements for its new eBook program, Nocturne Bites.

We’re looking for fast-paced novellas that hook the reader early by establishing a paranormal world and its conflicts. We are looking for stories of vampires, shape-shifters, werewolves, psychic powers, etc. set in contemporary times.

Many of the elements that make a successful Silhouette Nocturne remain true for Nocturne Bites. Stories should deliver a dark, highly sensual read that will entertain readers and take them from everyday life to an atmospheric, complex world filled with characters struggling with life and death issues. A strong alpha hero is of the utmost importantance—he should be powerful, mysterious and totally attractive to the heroine.

While action-packed and mission-oriented, the scope of these stories should be more contained, with more focus turned to character development. All stories should be capable of standing alone; all loose ends need to be tied up, and the relationship between hero and heroine should resolve itself in a satisfying manner.

For published authors, this line is a great way to build their miniseries at Harlequin and Silhouette. Unpublished authors are welcome as well.

Only complete manuscripts submitted electronically will be considered from unpublished authors; no partials or queries, please. Submissions should be sent as a Word-compatible attachment. Submissions should also follow standard formatting guidelines—double-spaced and written in a clear, legible font on numbered pages. Author name and title should appear as a header or footer on each page.

A few questions

I have a few questions -

"For published authors, this line is a great way to build their
miniseries at Harlequin and Silhouette. Unpublished authors are welcome
as well.

Only complete manuscripts submitted electronically will be
considered from unpublished authors; no partials or queries, please.
Submissions should be sent as a Word-compatible attachment."

It says for published authors this line is a great way to build their minseries at Harlequin and Silhouette. So are they only going to consider authors published by Harlequin and Silhouette.

It says unpublished authors - does that mean unpublished period or
just unpublished with Harelquin/Silhouette. If you are epubbed does
that count as published?

And says only fulls/completed from unpublished authors but then says no partials or queries. Does that only apply to unpublished authors? Or unpublished by Harlequin and Silhouette? And if so how would published authors submit if not on partial/proposal?

It may just be that it's still early but that sentence is a bit confusing.

Oh, WOW!!!

Nocturne Bites? Love it! I work much better with those smaller word counts, and I've had a Nocturne-y story rolling around in my head for a while.  Maybe THIS is the time to get it on paper, and in!!! Thanks for the info, Dee!!!!

Some good questions...

But really, you have to just look at the lines that apply to you. If you're already pubbed by Harlequin/Sil, you go through your editor first, as is generally always the case, so they're not going to get terribly specific for the pubs. And it's also the reason for the line of distinction. If you're not pubbed with H/S, then you have to go in directly instead of through your established editor.

And since they do say they're considering un-pubbed, they are definitely considering more than published authors. There's no limitation on who can submit.

So, pubbed elsewhere? Send in your submission as listed above. Which is Fulls. They don't have reason to trust anyone they've never worked with before. And I believe 15k is well within standard submission size, even for pubs. When they sell off proposal, unless they're extremely well connected with their editor, they still have to send in partials with their proposals.

Okay, I think that covers everything. Let me know if I missed one!

Thank you but

I thank you for trying to answer my questions but I'm still confused.

And I'm sorry if you took my quetions the wrong way or I'm stepping on any toes but as I stated, the way things are worded are, for lack of a better word,  confusing.

I understand about going to the editor if you are already pubbed with Harlequin or Silhouette but what are they considering to be pubbed. Because some of the info is conflicting the way I'm reading it.

So thank you for trying to answer my questions, but I'm going to have to try another avenue to get my answers I think. I really do appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

And again, I apologize as this seems to have been the wrong forum to broach my questions.

Candy, I think what Dee is

Candy, I think what Dee is saying is, that, basically anyone can send in a finished piece.  Whether you've been published or not ( as long as the piece you're sending in hasn't bee pubbed)....since it's a short piece there's no need for queries and such...just send in your finished piece with all your valid info....hope this helps

JulesKiss

and Jodie...nice to see you here girlfriend....we must tell Nini about this one!

just to clarify - other

just to clarify -

other avenue = just submit and see what happens

I understand that. But the

I understand that. But the confusing part is

"
For published authors, this line is a great way to build their miniseries at Harlequin and Silhouette."

To me that implies published = published by Harlequin and Silhouette. That's the part that I wanted clarification on. I already have a piece between those lengths finished and ready to submit. The published question always confuses me because some pubs, editors and agents don't recognize being epublished as being published.

So this was really just me trying to understand the phrasing cause of that one sentence. And wondering where in the pile I'd go among the published or unpublished.

Thanks for trying to explain further. I'm really not trying to be difficult.

Hey Candy...

No Worries! We want to be clear. And really, you didn't step on toes. This is the place to ask questions.

So yes, when they say "published", they mean with Har/Sil, in this instance. That particular line is to tell their established authors that being in other lines won't preclude them from consideration. (Reason for that is that many authors are encouraged to build an audience in one line, for example. This is an opportunity to expand horizons for those authors.)

If an author wants, pubbed with HQ or not, they can submit as it says here or through their editor or through their agent. Basically, it's all going into one pile anyway, so there's no particular edge.

From my own understanding, as far as HQ is concerned, if you're not published with them, they're going to treat you as someone who hasn't been published with them. If you are an ePub, that gives you experience with contracts, edits, editors and deadlines, which is an edge for everyone; you'll have an idea what to expect. But HQ doesn't count previous publishing experience anywhere as anything but your experience. Basically, it won't bump you up in the considerations in any way. Same goes for folks who have been pubbed in non-fiction, e Book or any other publisher.

If you've got something that fits and it's never been pubbed anywhere, send it in.

Hope that helps!

Best of luck,

Dee

Hey, Jules!

I knew I'd see you here, LOL!!! And yes, Nini will need to know about this one -- this is right up her alley!

I'm sitting here trying to decide if my idea is "dark" enough for a Nocturne Bite or if it's more on the light side and better for another Brief.  I could play with it, I guess. I'm still going to try and see where I go...

My guess (hope???)  is if you can get them in early enough, the wait might NOT be 6 months!!! Tongue out

Question

This looks like an interesing opportunity! Thanks for posting it, Dee.

I guess I would like a clarification on 'highly sensual'. What imprint would it most resemble? spice? blaze? presents? or is it more like the desire line?

Just asking since I'm not a regular to the nocture line. (Maybe I should change that...)

Thanks for your help!

Hey Jodie I'm thinking

Hey Jodie

I'm thinking the same thing...I hate waiting.....but yeah, I've got a few ideas I'll work on and try to get something done....I"m just trying to finish the paranormal I'm working on and in the last month I've worked on two contest entries and a spice brief....I need to focus and get the bloody, ( and I do mean bloody!) thing done!

Jules

~~Phew~~ Finally found this page..

I'm here and as much as i love vamps and stuff...i don't think i want to write about them.  However, Jules and Jodie...both of you can.  I know you both can.

I think i'll stick with spice briefs, and paranormal things.

Yes, i know that paranormal is 'nocturne' but mine is too light and sexual.

 Best of luck!

Nini :)

Hey everyone!

I was so happy when I heard about this earlier today. One of my goals is to be pubbed with HQN, specifically in the Intrigue and Nocturne lines.

I'm glad Harlequin has opened up this new opportunity for shorter works!

I did have a few questions. Will this be an ongoing permanent addition to HQN? (I hope so).

And also, I notice the guidelines say for published authors it's a great addition to their mini-series but I was wondering is it okay if the "Bites" story is a start to a mini-series by an unpublished writer? I hope that makes sense!

Thanks again! Smile

Rae

Rae...

It's as permanent as any of the other lines, lol.

And if the premise is good, one never knows. They may do that with the pubs. At this point, it can't hurt you to send it in and find out, right?

Anyone know how long the wait to hear is at this point?

Hi Jodie,

I can't imagine that it would be insane at this point... unlike my 5 month brief wait :S

Not Sure...

Honestly, sometimes those auto-responders just don't get through spam-filters or what not, so be sure to check your junk mail. Or something unknownn keeps it from triggering. So your entry might get in anyway.

Also, hard to say on the wait. It's still a submission, so I'd go with the 3-6 month standard wait. :)

Bites Submission

I'm almost done with my Bite.  What needs to be in the body of the email?  Should I put a brief synopsis there or in a page of the actual document.  I'm a bit nervous about the submission format itself with email.  The guidelines are a bit vague.

I believe this will be a new feature here at Harl...just like the spice briefs.....as far as a synopsis....I think Michele Hauf reccomends a blurb in the body of the email, similar to what you'd find on the back of a book....if you scroll back several messages she gives a wonderful example!

good luck on your subs...I'm half done mine and hope to finish by tomrrow

For an e submissions I usally paste a query, with a short blurb in the second paragraph, into the body of the email, and then attach the document, unless guidelines specify otherwise. E subs aren't quite as strict as regular ones as to format, but if you're unsure, then I would say go with everything :)

Bites info..

Yes, this is an ongoing new line, just like Briefs, so there's no deadline to get your story in. But the earlier the better applies to all lines, lol.

I like Laurens idea of posting the Q&S in the body of the email and making the submission an attachment. But it won't hurt anyone to use the email as a cover letter and attaching your synop as well.

Hope that helps,

I've been gone for a while

I've been gone for a while because I am so busy with student teaching. But I had some free time tonight... Can I say how excited I am about this new line? I have several pieces that are just about submission ready. If I can find the time to polish them up.This is a great idea! Smile

Get one of those puppies sent out Linda....I should have mine ready by tonight or early tomorrow for sub......let us know if you get an auto response or not......Lauren didn't when she subbed hers last week, and we just want to know if it's not yet in place....for peace of mind!

Way to go Kate.....how did you screw your sub letter up?  LOL....just don't go back and look at your sub...you'll drive yourself crazy!  Glad to see you got it in though......and the auto response is an email that usually is sent within a few mins to a few hours of a sub.....When you sub to spice briefs you'll get one and it just informs you that they've gotten your sub.....it's good for piece of mind, but alas if you didnt' get one either then they obviously don't have it set up......which I guess will put Laurens mind at ease....I'll be freakin when I sub mine, I've had problems with documents not going through.....

Does anyone know how sensual/sexual nocturne bites are?

Hi,

I have a question about the senusual/sexual part of nocturne.  Do you have to be explicit or can you just have heightened sensuality?   Thanks in advance if anyone knows.

The Nocturnes are getting

The Nocturnes are getting pretty steamy... the books all have about 2 fairly graphic sex scenes in them... I would say the bite should have one. That's just my take on the matter, though :)

I would think the same, too...

while the bite is MUCH shorter than a full length novel, I think readers are going to want at least one great intimate scene.

I do believe...

there's not a barring on sensuality. In fact, that's somewhat expected with some types of paranormals. :)

I agree Dee. I think some of

I agree Dee. I think some of the mildest paranormals I have ever read are a few of Amanda Ashley's contemporary vampire romances. (She is not a HQN author.) I recall one where they waited until they got married and even then nothing was detailed.  But I have found it seems much more commonplace for a para to be pretty sensual and even graphic in nature.

Hi all,  I'm just going

Hi all,

I'm just going to jump in here and offer my advice about the sensuality level of the BITES.

They should be highly sensual, but not erotic.   Think Blaze not SPICE

Good save!!! And thanks, Vivi, for the input. OMG, I totally love your photo. Very cool!

I'm at the last 2K of my Bite!!! OMG. I'm going to have to do some edits to streamline, but overall, I'm in love with this story. Whether or not Nocturne will be, I dunno.  But it's ending at a definite end, but there could be room for another story that will pick up the thread and continue with two different characters. Woo Hoo!  And as I know from the Nocturne chat, I have to beg to borrow him, but my H looks quite a bit like Mick St. John from Moonlight. Ahhhhhh. He can nibble on me any time!

Thanks Vivi for clarifying

Thanks Vivi for clarifying that.  I definitely didn't mean erotic when I wrote graphic. At least not for Nocturnes. But  I have read some, even in Blaze and Nocturne, where the words used are more of graphic in nature. you, know - like the male "c" word. (This is a PG 13 board, how else do I say that? LOL!) Do you suggest that using that kind of more grahic language is pretty much not what Nocturne is looking for?

The male "c" word- ha ha ha

The male "c" word- ha ha ha :)

I think Vivi has a pont- if you can't figure it out from Nocturne, read a couple of Blazes. Bottom line, they want good stories. If you have a couple of "c" words that won't work, they will ask you to edit them out :)
