Adventures in Geek Dating

wine.jpg

After twenty plus years of working a police officer’s swing-shift schedule, my dh is finally on straight days...weekends off. So we started going on weekly "dates." Now, you’d think that my kids would be impressed that after all our years together, we still like each other enough to enjoy doing things together, but instead they mock our dates...calling them geek dates. You see, we don’t go out to fancy dinners and movies...we go antiquing, sometimes house-sales, and this weekend’s geek date was winery hopping. Rather than protest their name for our dates, we’ve embraced it. We are the king and queen of geek dating!

Yesterday was beautiful. Oh, it was still cold, but the sun was out. A rarity in Western PA this time of year. We set out to restock my wine rack with bottles from area wineries.

Wait a minute...you didn’t know we were known for wineries?? Here on the southern shore of Lake Erie there’s a very thriving wine business. Field upon field of grapes. So, now you know.

We went to this very cool little restaurant in Ripley, New York–Meeders. They have the best milkshakes and burgers ever! And rumor has it they have great pies. The only problem is, I’ve never managed to get to that portion of the meal and still have room for a dessert! LOL Anyway, then the winery-hopping began in earnest. At one, we were greeted by the owner who was wearing a robe. He had a great schpeel about his wines. Stories he told as he poured you a taste. How it was made, what it should be served with. All this while standing there in his robe. LOL

I don’t think it comes as any surprise to anyone who reads my books that I adore Erie County! So if you decide to pay us a visit, take some time to experience our wineries. You can find some list at http://www.chautauquawinetrail.org/. Rumor has it that our bathrobe clad winery owner is rarely if ever seen in his clothes, so don’t be surprised if you run into him! LOL

So, what do you and your SO (significant other) do for fun? Antiques? Wineries? Spelunking? Cross-country skiing? A quiet evening reading? What’s your idea of fun?

I think your "geek dates"

I think your "geek dates" sound like fun.  Antiquing and winery hopping rank high on our list of things to do when we have time.  Of course, we just bought a house in the country that we are "refurbishing" so we don't have a lot of time on our hands. The region in the north of France is famous for its flea-market/yard sales.  Whole towns block of certain streets and people set up shop in the road.  We used to buy a book with the dates and places at the beginning of the season and go every Sat/Sun to a different sale.

Frenchie's new house!

Frenchie, Congrats on the new house!!  That's always so much fun, and antique stores and flea markets are a great place to find treasures for them!  My dh and I found a great Colonial style desk about a month ago, that matches the rest of our furniture.  I love that you have a book of places available...that's so cool!  And despite your Frenchie "name" I didn't realize you really lived in France!  That's so freakin' cool!  My youngest and I may being going on the school trip to France and Italy next year!  I'd so love to!

It is fun, but it's also

It is fun, but it's also MUCH more work than I expected.  (The DH was not surprised!) The house was build in 1850. The following link has some picutres: http://fake.frenchie.monsite.orange.fr/

I hope you get to come to France.  It's great.  I've lived here for nearly 20 years.

France

Frenchie,

Oh, yeah, it's tons of work.  We bought my in-laws home four years ago.  They'd built it in 1959.  We've been renovating ever since!  This year, we're hoping to put new windows in half the house (we already did the other half when we put on the kitchen addition) and new siding.  Plus, doing more landscaping out front.  It never ends!  But have fun.  It very cool!  Thanks for the pics!  Just take it one step at a time. If you look at all you have to do at once, it's wayyy too overwhelming.

And I'm so hoping we get to come visit you all in France next year!!  I'll keep you posted!

We're broke and also losers

My DH and I are enormous losers and we're also broke. Our big dates come when the kids go to my parents' house and DH and I are home alone. That's right. Home in our own house! (Without the kids, it's like a hotel. Wink)

Um, let's see. We also periodically go to the bookstore. Or the downtown movie theatre where the same guy makes the popcorn, sells the tickets, and starts the films. Or wait, I have another one! I have ninety million cousins who all seem to be in a marrying state of mind. We have one or two family wedding dates every year!

I like to think of this as our "nesting" period. When we were younger we did a lot of cool stuff and I believe we will again. Now cool runs more toward new paint for the hallway or, my current dream, new storm doors!

Holly--your dates sound wonderful. I'll aspire to your level of geekdom anyday.

FF--I didn't realize you were in France either. Your house sounds marvelous! Have fun! Loved the photos--especially the guest room!

Nesting Dates

Ellen,  No...you guys aren't losers.  Those times alone in the house WITHOUT the kids is wonderful time!   As well, as the movies (love the same guy does it all) or family weddings.  Nesting is a lovely phase.  My dh and I have had kids our whole married life...so we've been nesting since the beginning.  Our geek dates are our next phase.  They're lovely, but we still do lots of home-time!

I hear you on the new storm doors.  When we put the addition on, the back of the house got a new one, and now I'd like to replace the other two.  We got one where when you push the glass down, the screen unrolls itself.  It's awesome.  When they glass is up, it's just glass, so it's a clean look.  But within seconds, there's the screen.  Crossing your fingers you get yours soon!

i love the idea of "geek

i love the idea of "geek dating".  actually, i love the idea of time spent with dh shopping considered a date.

we tend to be really practical.  i guess owning a home, having two kids and being a sahm in today's economy, ya kinda have to be pretty practical.  we both love to cook and spend many weekend afternoons whipping up fanastic culinary creations together, often sharing a bottle of wine!  hey, i guess i can consider those times dates!  wow!  the romance is still blooming in my life!!

we are currently "finishing" our basement.  we have spent many afternoons at home depot or lowe's picking out lights, bathroom fixtures, windows, carpeting, etc.

when we were dating, we would have considered shopping a date...so why not consider our forays to home depot a date?

sometimes we even stop at panera or baja fresh for a bite to eat.  once we even went to a place for a cocktail...

i guess we have been dating!

i feel so much cooler now that i know i have been "geek dating" because prior to that, i thought i had not had a date in, well, years!!

woo hoo!  thanks for posting, hollySmile

Lowes...the dating destination of choice!!

Theresa,

Oh, yeah Lowe's and Home Depot are both high on our geek dating list!  LOL  My thoughts are, anytime the two of us are doing something we enjoy...it's a date!  Your weekends cooking sounds like perfect dates to me!

I think we need a Home Improvements section of the boards where we can all get together and share our renovation projects!  The basement sounds great.  Especially with kids.  When my son moved out, my daughter took the basement bedroom so she gets the rec room down there.  She loves it when friends come over.

I'm so glad you discovered you've been dating all this time without knowing it!!  LOL  Now, give your dh a big kiss when he gets home and tell him how much you love those "dates."

My geek date

The hubby and I sometimes cook together--which means I give him all the yucky jobs (like chopping onions) and he does it. LOL! Usually its some sort of gourmet recipe I've always wanted to try and we open a bottle of wine and get to chat while we cook--without interruptions from the kiddie.Laughing

Jennifer's Geek Date

Ah, Jennifer, a guy who will chop your onions is truly the stuff heroes are made of!!  Love that cooking seems to be a popular geek date.  My dh does the dishes with me, but we don't cook together tons.   Of course, his idea of haute cuisine is creamed tuna on toast (and my apologies to anyone who loves this dish, but ick!), so I don't ask for much of his help!  LOL

I love the name "geek dating"

It sounds like something my dh and I would do. I remember the days my babies were small, every year for our anniversary we would swap houses with my parents. They would take care of the ankle biters and we would go to their house with take out (to last the weekend), 6-12 romantic comedies (depending on whether it was a 2 or 3 day weekend) and we would enjoy our "get-away". We also go contra dancing (think those long line dances in Jane Austen films on speed) and International folk dancing for our geek dates--or maybe those are retro hippie dates.Wink

Nancy

Dancing, house-swapping and bagpipes!

Shean,

Very cool about the dancing.  I don't have any sense of timing, but I love watching other people dance!

And I love your geek dates with your dh!  Switching houses is such a brilliant idea!

Oh, and skipped over and saw one of your kids do bagpipes.  I'm so impressed.  I love them.  I keep telling my dh the ultimate geek date would involve him in kilt...so far he hasn't taken me up on it, but I keep hoping!

Men in Kilts

One of my favorite activities is going to Scottish games and watching the pipers strut there stuffWink Now that our piper has gone off to seminary we don't do as many piping events, but my dh has a kilt...

Kilts

Shean,

I love those kind of events!  We have Edinboro University not too far from me, and they're big into their Scottishness!

And I'm so impressed your dh has a kilt!

Geek Dating

I love those! Dh and I might go to dinner or a movie. Last Friday he deemed we needed a date night so we went to a rib place I was introduced to by friends on a girl's day. Not our usual date night style since we had 3 yo dgd with us. She fell asleep half way there, despite efforts to prevent it, and didn't want to be woke up so she cried for the first 15 minutes there. Finally woke up with the help of Dr. Pepper and lemonade and we had a nice time entertaining the little one. Then we took her, as promised each payday, to WalMart for a toy. Of course by the time we returned home she didn't want to go back to bed!

Sometimes we go to flea markets or yard saling in warmer weather. I'm a firm believer in "One man's junk is another man's treasures".

Lisa, It sounds like a

Lisa, It sounds like a lovely time...except for the crying!  But hey, the Dr Pepper worked, so all was well!

And I love yard sales and Flea Markets.  My dh's favorite show is Antiques Roadshow.  I love the stories when they bought a painting for fifty cents and it's worth five thousand dollars.  Hasn't happened to me yet...but I keep hoping!  LOL

50 or 5000

Me too. We watch the show all the time and gawk at some of the prices. I have an old (at least I think it's old) Hamilton Beach coffee pot, the two piece pot bellied-cook over open flame- kind that I bought for $25. I keep missing the ARS to take it and see if I got cheated by dhs aunt or if I made a good deal. Heck, no sentimentality attached, I'd take $5000 in a heartbeat! Lol.

ARS

Lisa, My fingers crossed it's a rare Hamilton Beach!  I'd love to go on the ARS.  I don't think we have anything really rare,  but we have a lot of things I'd love to see how much they're worth.
