I don't really send out a lot of these to everyone. It's not because I don't believe in God b/c I do have a very strong faith. I just keep it more to myself than most people. Today though, I'm asking you all to join me in praying for a boy named Dustin and his mom, Michele. He is currently in very critical condition (just a few days before his 18th birthday) with a staph infection that has gotten into his bloodstream and double pneumonia. It's been an EXTREMELY hard time for him and his family in the past week. At this point it could go either way and the doctors are giving him a 50/50 chance of surviving. The road ahead is a long one for him and he needs all the prayers he can get right now.

Thank you so much for you prayers!!!!! Dustin has taken some small baby steps towards improvement overnight which has put off the last critical step of the ECMO procedure. The ECMO procedure is a last option kind of procedure. Michele's posts seem to be somewhat more positive today which is a great sign. We were worried about her!!!!! Thank you your continued prayers! Tomorrow is Dustin's 19th birthday! I was a year off there! Michele's going to decorate his room and everyone is sending over cards for him!

Update.......
One of the infections - MRSA infection - has been beaten! WOOHOO! What a great birthday present for Dustin!!!!! They are working on getting him off the oscalating ventilator and onto a regular ventilator today and tomorrow. Hopefully, he'll be able to transition over and won't have to do the ECMO. His lungs are still extremely full with fluid and that's the major problem right now. He'll have a very long road ahead of him without the ECMO procedure at this point. He will definitely be in rehab for a while relearning how to walk, eat, dress, etc. Thank you again for all of your prayers and guardian angels! Michele's spirits are definitely lifting up more and more each day; and Dustin's health is slowly improving!!!!!

Another Update.........
It hasn't been the best day for Dustin. They began backing off on his ventilation system to see how well he would tolerate the changes. In the beginning, things seemed to go well. Around lunch time, the doctors advised things weren't going so well and that his blood gases were not showing well. He continued a downward trend and they needed to make the decision to go on the ECMO machine. Michele decided to go ahead with the ECMO. As they prepared him, he took a very downward turn and the doctors actually called code blue on him. His blood pressure dropped to nearly nothing and his heart rate went down dramatically. They didn't think they even had time to get him on the ECMO machine. A lung xray revealed that he had a double pulminary embolism (excuse the spelling) which is where a hole becomes present in the sack that holds your lungs and they filled up with air due to the pressure of the osilating ventilator. The surgeons were already there to prepare for ECMO so they quickly inserted two chest tubes to release the pressure on his lungs and heart. His stats starting increasing again to a sustainable level and the doctors held off on the ECMO decision again. Needless to say, he's in a very precarious situation right now. Please keep praying for Dustin and Michele!

Update...........
Slowly but surely, things are looking better each day!!! The staph infection is gone and they are removing him from his ventilator. He's breathing more and more on his own each day! They have brought him out of the medically induced coma and he is opening his eyes. He is in a lot of pain right now and very uncomfortable so they have changed him over to morphine. HIs blood gases are perfect and blood sugar is stable!

Update.......
I'm so sorry I haven't updated sooner!!! They say the power of prayer is just amazing and I totally have to believe that in Dustin's case! His turnaround is incredible - from the boy they thought would die just a few weeks ago to standing and sitting up on his own!!!! Dustin is doing just awesome!!!! He's had such an amazing turn around from just a week ago! They brought him off the coma drugs and had to go thru detox for a bit b/c of all the drugs he had in his system. He was extremely uncomfy at first and still seems to be a bit restless. He started rehab yesterday and was able to sit in a chair by himself for several days BEFORE going! The only thing he has left to remove is his right chest tube but that should come out any day! Michele's been reading all his birthday cards (over 300!!!!) and personal care messages on his website to him every day! He's been so blessed and is so touched from all the support! He was asking Michele what had happened b/c he only remembers bits and pieces. As she started to fill him in, he listened with tears running down his face. He's so fortunate and, I know I'm repeating myself, just blessed!!!!!! Thank you again for all the outpouring of support and prayers offered up for him!!!! Hopefully by this time next year, he'll be serving our country in the Marines which is his plan! Oo-Rah!!!!

He's home!!!!
Can you believe it!?!?! Dustin's finally home again! He left the hospital on Friday afternoon. They are so excited to be back home! He's still having some problems with his lungs but they have him on steriod therapy to help heal them. Thank you so much for everyone's constant support and prayers!!!!
