This is my dog Dante 8 years ago at a ham radio contest we operated from Mead, Colorado. I adopted Dante from a shelter in NC about 17 years ago. He had been abused and abandoned. He is now 18 years old or so. Three different vets have told us he is in amazingly good health for a dog his age and cannot find anything physically wrong with him other han a low thyroid but with thyroid meds his levels have been steady according to blood tests for the past 2 years. At night he gets manic from 9pm until midnight or even 2 am in this panting, and whining frenzy that includes non-stop water-pee-water/food-pee routine, going up and down 2 flights of stairs sometimes 10 times. It's a long story but for 2 years we have been working with vets and trying to come up with every creative solution possible to comfort him, to slow him down and have us all get a good night's sleep.
Last night my husband took Dante to the emergency room at 10pm. He had thrown up and was not eating. We were quietly reading and he would not get up and his eyes kept closing. When he did get up we noticed this stool in his bed which he never does. He could not stand up on his hind legs. I freaked because one of our cats went into a coma from kidney disease and this looked too much like that. Glenn took him to the emergency room, carrying him in his arms down the 2 flights of stairs to the car. I stayed home in the interest of getting him to the vet quickly. By the time they got to the vet, he was perfectly normal. They still do not know what happened because he was fine. Possibly a mini-stroke but he surely looks fine today. It could have been that the dose of the pill the doctor prescribed was too high for him but the lower dose had no effect. The normal dose is 1/2 to 1 pill and we had tried 1/4 to no effect for 2 nights so the doctor suggested we try 1/2. He had not had any of that medication in over 24 hours so maybe it was a cumulative effect? In any case, I am very happy that Dante is okay and my worst nightmare did not come true last night. I really hope we can find some other way to calm him at night. He gets so wound up that you would need a video to even believe it. Being a terrier mix, Dante has always been a bit anxious and has major separation anxiety but we cannot determine any reason for this change of behavior and insecurity. Sometimes just having the cat in the loft instead of in the bedroom with the three of us can make him anxious.
Anyhow, that is what has been happening. I was terrified last night that I was going to lose him and I am very happy he is ok. I have loved all my pets but Dante is special to me. Dante is the best, most wonderful dog I have ever had. He has been my dog the past 17 years and been a real trooper when I broke my leg, when I moved to a new state and living with a new housemate in my husband Glenn and several cats over the years. I just wish somehow he could talk to me and tell me why he is getting so manic at night. It is 10:30pm and every single one of us except the cat maybe is totally beat. I am turning off the computer and I really hope all 4 of us can get a good night sleep tonight.
Has anyone else had xperience with aging dogs? Any creative ideas?
I may take a few days off and try to catch up on my reading for a couple of days or so and try to get some more rest. I have about 8 books from Suspense and mysteries to a fu science fiction and Beth Cioota to three Medievals that want to read. We might try to see if we can get him settled earlier in the evening.

Here is a picture of Dante 8 years later (last month) sleeping on a comforter with 3 yr old Buddha. If we could just get them to be this settled at night :-) Pleasant dreams to everyone from snowy Colorado!

Aw, poor Dante,
Animals are often very much like having small children who can't speak yet...so it can be pretty frustrating when they are not well and can't tell us where it hurts, or what the problem is so we can fix it for them.
I hope your fur baby settles soon. Love the pic of both pets sleeping/resting...don't they just look like snuggly little angels.

Good luck...
as I know our furbabies are our babies and when something is wrong, it disrupts everything.....

That they cannot tell us what is ailing htem is so hard. I am sorry he had the trauma of a trip to the emergency vet, but am very happy to hear that he is back to himself again. My oldest Brittany is 13 now and showing all the signs of old age and it seemed to happen so fast. My husband and I both are taking more time to just spend cuddling and loving him. Your babies are truely part of the family and it is always hard to see one hurting. Take care and the best to Dante

Thanks everyone. We have run out of creative ideas. In our old home, he slept in the closet and loved to settle down. I guess it felt like a den and dogs are den animals. it doesn't work in our new home because the closets are in a hallway. We made a den for him that didn't seem to help settle him down. Last night we just gave up and let him sleep downstairs until right before we turned off the light but we had to withhold late night water so he did not pee in the house. He'll let us know he needs to go out if he is in the bedroom. Normally he wants to be near us and if Glenn and I are in 2 different rooms, he sits between the rooms. Now he wants to be in my office at a certain time and that's that.
Tonight I guess we will keep trying to figure out something but I think drugs are out of the question. The senility drug anapryl did nothing to help even after months and neither did this one. I feel like I am always one step behind trying to figure out his latest quirk. Ever since that pet food recall and switching him off his favorite food, it's been a nightmare trying to figure out what brand and flavor he will eat and just as we figure it out, he starts to turn his nose up a it. He also now has developed this habit of hitting his food bowl with his nose over and over and sometimes turning it over....food he likes! I just wish I could find some way to reassure him and calm him. It seems to change all the time. His new thing is getting anxious when the cat is not on the same floor at night. His life is probably more calm and reassuring than ever before which is why I am so frustrated. Maybe when some of the snow is gone, we will try obedience again. He really loves doing obedience training outdoors.

I guess you've already considered/tested for this, but I wondered whether he's diabetec. I know it happens to older dogs - it happened to our beloved dog Scruffy and made him a little incontinent. He also started to have epileptic fits. Made him act very strangely, but after the fit he was normal.

Claire, thanks for the
Claire, thanks for the suggestion. He has had lots of blood tests over the last two years, the last being 3 months ago and he looks good on everything, including no diabetes. Last year he had dental surgery and the vet did even more extensive testing because of the risk of surgery on aw dog of his age. His thyroid is low without meds but with meds it has been within normal range for quite some time. I have to think part of this is the thyroid meds but we can't take him off those meds because that would hurt his organs and all sorts of things I did read that thyroid meds can make dogs very thirsty and have dry throats. This kind of behavior did start about the time we started the thyroid medication. Every vet who has looked at him in the past two years are actually shocked about how good a health he is in when they find out how old he is. I am totally clueless at this point. Senility? He does get very addled if his routine changes but the anapryl did not work.

I don't have any suggestions but I wanted to pop in and say I hope he's doing as well as possible. I love seeing your photos of Dante and he sounds like a really special dog.
Thanks, Lady Amalthea. He
Thanks, Lady Amalthea. He is petty special to me. WHen my apartment flooded years ago, I walked out with one thing --- Dante in my arms. I hope we can figure out some solution and quickly. Buddha just stole his downstairs bed and Dante is slleping next to him on the edge of his bed right now.

Poor Dante
I just saw your blog and hope that Dante is doing better and that tests don't come up with anything serious. He looks like such a sweet dog. I have a cat named Buddy that is about 17 or 18 and he is very special to me. As of now he has no ailments and everything is in working order he has a great appetite and even still likes to play like a kitten. I don't know what I would do without my baby.

Dante update
Thanks Moonsong! For some stange reason, the last week, he has gone to bed instead of thid nighttime mania....and without any medication which is the best. About all we have done is not put up the baby gate until after he has fallen asleep and trying to feed him him a bt more earlier in the day ratherr than later. I bet dogfood has a lot of salt in it because his obsession with water seems to be tied to his food.
THe older he gets, the more we experience these kinds of big changes. The pet food recall really did us in. He ate one brand of dry food that was recalled. This dog has been a vaccuum cleaner when it comes to food most of his life until the pet food recall. He loved everything ---just the sdmaell of cantaloupe, clementines and broccoli would make him excited or wake up. I could peel one bit off of a clementine or just slice into a cantaloupe and he woudl get so excited. Now finding a food he likes and getting him to eat it is a struggle. He still has an appetite but ever since we had to change his regualar dogfood, he likes only a few brands and only a couple of flavors...and as soon as we find one, he gets sick of it. Some nights we can open up all kinds of dogfood and even treats, including what was his favorite 3 weeks ago, and he will turn up his nose.
Not long ago, he used to get upset or anxious if he wasn't in the same room as us. Now the trick seems to be letting him sleep downstairs if he wants...but making sure we remove water so he can't sneak and go to the bathroom in the house.
I guess in a way it's like raising kids except there is a bit of a differene. this dog has been one way for maybe 15 years and we all settled into a family routine. Now as he ages, I feel like he is a new family member and am scarmbling to figure out what he wants, what upsets him and half the time I feel clueless because what was once "Dante" in terms of likes/comfort isn't anymore.

re: Dante Update
That pet food recall really has messed up alot of animal regular type foods and schedules. Luckily I didn't feed the exact foods that were recalled but I did feed my dog and cats food that were with those companies and that change was difficult. Dante reminds me of my cat Buddy he sometimes loves certain foods and other times he acts like it is poisonous. It might be that spoiled side of them I don't know. I can't feed him the same foods every day or he won't eat it. I have to mix different ones in to keep him happy. I have another cat who is quite happy eating the same foods day after day but she is much younger so maybe its older age?

Our cat is like that. He
Our cat is like that. He likes one brand of dry food and only one variety of that brand and same with wet. When we adopted him, we got treats just to bond and all that. He hates cat treats. We tried every kind of cat treat and finally found one kind of Cat treat he like ---Pounce chicken---and wouldn't you know it, the company went and made it "new and improved", i.e. our cat won't touch it! Buddha doesn't even like human food. Real tuna, no temptation at all! How a cat can like Science Diet pellets and not tuna, who knows. I hope his taste buds expand in selection as he gets older.

I hope Dante keeps doing
I hope Dante keeps doing better. I always enjoy the pictures of him you show. He sounds like such a sweetie and I know how much you love him.
I also wanted to mention that my dog does the same thing wanting to be with both my dh and I, even when we're in seperate rooms, which is quite frequent. Since dh does most of his work from home, and is always on the phone, I go into the bedroom to watch tv. read, do homework a lot, and Abby, our wonderful, beautiful dog we rescued from a shelter a year and a half ago, always wants to lay in the doorway to the bedroom (which is right off the living room where dh is). We have a hard time getting her to either come in the bedroom with me or go out in the living room with dh while he works, because the door needs to stay closed for either of us to get what we want/need to do done.
