I thought I could write 100k but it's not working. I am at 73k words. I start an on-line course and the instructor tells me I HAVE to write 100k or I won't get published. I ask questions on other websites and I'm repeatedly told I have to write 100K.
Darn it, I have a 73k historical that needs a LOT of work but I love my plot and premise. It will not be tight at 100,000 words.
I probably shouldn't blog right after the 50th person today e-mailed me to tell me I HAVE to write 100k... But I do feel better now. I am going to start on another ms and it will be 70,000+ words because that is where I am right now.

Writing...
I have a friend who decided to get her MFA. She writes children's fiction. The MFA program wouldn't let her write what she wanted to write. They insisted that she write literary fiction. She quit the program.
It seems to me that a lot of "the establishment" writing types have no respect for people that write in genre. If you see it as a historical then it probably is....

MS length
It makes me wonder if the on-line crses are out of date? I say this because the last thing I heard, they were starting to cut back on longer books and if your ms is over 110k, it's an automatic in the slush pile.

Computer count v word page count
HH went down in length when it began to be edited out of London. It is COMPUTER count. Theshorter length also means that it is easier for HH to tbe translated. Harlequin does publish in 22 different languages.
Word page count is always going to be higher than computer count because of the not full lines and end of chapter factor. But there can be a10k difference or more in word count between to the two methods when you are at this lenth. And in some ways, it will depend on how dialogue heavy you are.
Mainstream historicals are longer because they often have more subplots. HH tend to be pretty heavily focussed on the development of the emotional relationship between the two protagonists.
But really HH are single title in a series wrapper.

Next week is advice/critique free week.
I thought I researched the course/instructor well enough and hoped it would help with my outlines. Everyone else in the course is writing sci-fi or action/adventure stuff.
I am having trouble putting aside this ms even though I don't have the skill yet to make it sell. I give my self 7 days and a little reading of Stephen Hawking to see if I can figure out a few things. If I'm not happy with where I am going I have a stand alone book in my head that is going to come out.
What I think I feel about Harlequin is your writing has to be really good to get a historical (or anything) published. The relationship is always the main thing and you can't have too much outside action/adventure conflict. I was told I'll make more money with bigger books. Right now I just want to write and progress in skill to be published. It's not the money, it's the joy of writing a really good scene or a good bit of dialogue. (That feeling is addictive!)
Thank you ladies for your encouragement. What a blessing you all are. I better get to work because that's the important thing- just keep writing!

RE: WHY IS NOBODY MENTIONING HARLEQUIN?
Here are things to think about, and they're coming from a book reader in the year 2008: I like to read. But I WILL NOT READ a book that is either too short or too long. If it's too short, it does not adequately develop. If too long, there is just a lot of "mush" in it, and I lose interest. For me, Harlequins (and Imprints) are the right sizes for modern readers. Long enough for those "cozy nights" with some hot chocolate, etc., but not so long to where they cannot be read and enjoyed.

Harlequins - the perfect size
I agree with Marty aka HockeyJock. I've seen the 2 or 3" tomes out on the shelves and I don't understand how someone would enjoy lugging them around. I need a book that I can tuck into my purse or backpocket so it's readily avail whether I'm in the car waiting from my kids or standing in the line-up at the grocery store.
All of the series imprints from Harlequin incl'g the SuperRomances are the perfect size for me. When a book deviates too much away from the H and h, I start to lose interest in their romance.
I guess I'm admitting you won't find many lengthy, flowery phrases and pages of desription in my books, eh?
Um...considering I'm not published yet...hmmm
Having said that Angel, when you finish your crse, if you want another opinion, give me a shout.

Thanks Anita Mae
Anita Mae- I'll give you a peek soon.
I just got the go ahead on my outline, conflicts and motivations. The course is to help me engage the reader which is great to learn with a shorter book.
Another thing that is attractive to me about Harlequin- the editors seem very loyal to their authors and vice versa. May sound corny, but as an outsider I see a lot of respect going both ways.
HockeyJock- The image of an ex-marine curled up with a book and hot cocoa. That is cool!

Just saw you were in the Canadian Armed Forces. May I ask your specialty? If it's not too personal. Any films I might have seen you in?

More money?
I was told I'll make more money with bigger books. Right now I just want to write and progress in skill to be published.
You simply can't tell. There are so many different factors involved. Mainstream does not necessarily pay more.
And there is always subrights to be considered. Harlequin is published in 110 different countries, 22 different languages. This is not necessarily true of other publishers. Quite a number of the other publishers only publish in the North American market.
Another factor is how much the individual writer needs to do with PR. because Harlequin is so widely recognised, has a significant subscriber base, etc, authors do not necessarily have to do as much. PR can be very expensive indeed.
The amount a writer earns is dependant on a lot of things -- line, number of books, number of reprints, which countries, when the books comes out etc so it is impossible to say how an average Harlequin author earns.. The one thing that is certain is that it takes far longer than you think, and the key to earning is to buid a readership... Harlequin gives authors the time to build a readership.
Quite a number of the Big Names started in category. For example Stephanie Laurens, Nora Roberts, Catherine Coulter,Jennifer Cruisie., Margaret Moore, Debbie Macomber, Linda Howard, Linda Lael Miller, Susan Wiggs etc.
Some of the other reasons to write sereis v mainstream has to do with the productivity of the author, and the sorts of stories that the author wants to tell. It is not all to do with money by a long shot.

From Teletype to TV
Angel - I was a teletype operator in the CAF which meant I was stuck in a windowless, locked room for my entire shift, sending & receiving classified msgs.
As for TV, I've been an extra on Corner Gas (6 times this season), Little Mosque on the Praire (3x), the pilot show Sabbatical (I was a drunk!), and Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story. (All Canadian)
I haven't been in film yet, although my kids have been extras there as well.
Oh - they used our van once too!

Background Performers
Actually, you probably won't see my face b/c they try to hide us behind the actor's heads. That way they can use us many times in the same show. We just go and change our clothes. At first I thought they were crazy and that people would notice but they don't.
Unless someone is actually looking in the background, nobody even notices us. About the closest view you will see me is the back of my head behind Wanda in a bar scene when I used fancy clips that day!
Mind you, there was one this season that should've been good but I missed that show. I'll have to watch the reruns or the comedy channel. Oh and buy the DVD of course.
I think my longest shot was 5 secs and that was in last season and even my dh didn't recognize me until I showed him where I was!
If we ever meet though and you get in the habit of watching the background too, then you'll pick me up easy!
If you watch Corner Gas and remember the show with Oscar and Karen selling cookies, and Davis wanting a bowl of Macaroodles (kids meal) ? Well, my ds was the 10 yo boy in the Ruby with Lacey, in the bar with Karen and Oscar, and on the sidewalk looking for Walkathon sponsors with Davis and Karen.

You Can Write 100K
I know it's hard, but you really can write 100k words. It all adds up in the tweaking and rewriting. I believe Harlequin lines require 70k - 80k. I looked up Harlequin Historicals and they require 70 - 75K. I don't know where you were getting your information, but at the bottom of this page there is a link to writing guidelines and that's where you can find all the requirements for most of the lines.
Patti
Patti & Anita Mae
Patti- I have reviewed Harlequin's guidelines. The advice I have been getting is to try AVON or Ballantine. I will probably concentrate on shorter books to try and get pubbed first.
Anita Mae- I wonder if I can get CBC so I can look for your shows. I was in communications in the USAF so I basically know what you did. After sitting in a cubicle you must love your farm.

Think of Stargate!
Angel, you got it, girl! I also worked for 3 yrs in the 'hole' 1 1/2 miles underground in North Bay - we were the Cdn HQ of Norad which is based in Cheyenne Mtn, CO. (like in Stargate for the rest of you). I always felt special taking the bus down there, especially when I walked through the 6 ton 'blast' door. I wonder if that's why I like Stargate so much?
But yeah, after 20 yrs of enclosed rooms, I crave the wide-open spaces! Can't stand basements any more!
