The most unexpected thing happened to me at the age of 16. I met the man of dreams. Just like that. He came to my door with a friend of a friend and I knew, right then and there, in that moment, that he was the man I was going to marry. It was the most amazing, almost out-of-body experience I've ever had.
This is why I still, to this day, believe in love. Why I write about heroes and heroines who fall into it and heroes and heroines who are out there searching for it. It's why I believe there's a special someone out there for everyone. If I could know love in an instant at 16, then I know it's out there for all of us.
Last year I blogged on my fellow med author Kate Hardy's blog for her 25th book celebration. I talked about the 25 reasons why I love my husband. I thought, as we were talking about love and our belief in it, I'd share them here, with many, many thanks to Kate.
You want to know why I believe in love? Read on.
1. He takes the garbage out (sorry, I didn't say they were going to be romantic)
2. He can fix anything
3. He's a great father
4. He still has the most amazing legs (which is more than can be said for me).
5. He never mentions how unamazing my legs are.
6. He knows how to use a vacuum cleaner
7. He can cook. And does. Often.
8. He doesn't mind eating cornflakes for tea when I can't be bothered to cook.
9. Despite the ravages of breast feeding and age he still finds my breasts utterly fascinating.
10. He will get up to the kids in the middle of the night
11. He rings all his nieces and nephews on their birthdays
12. He irons his own clothes
13. He makes eggs benedict every Sunday morning
14. He will give me a foot rub when I ask (and usually not expect favours in return)
15. In lieu of any dragons, he rescues me from the blue screen of death on my computer
16. He didn't cringe once when I insisted I just had to own a copy of "Achy Breaky Heart" (he even bought it for me)
17. He's getting better at buying me flowers "just because".
18. He's never walked away no matter how tough things get
19. He understands that night duty = cranky mummy/wife
20. He eventually realised that sex between a late and early shift was NEVER going to happen.
21. He never says "is it that time of the month"
22. His favourite car is a mini (the older version)
23. He is NOT into sport
24. He's a dog person
25. After nearly 22 years, he still loves me (despite being a far cry from the 16 year old girl I was when we first met).
There you go. 25 reasons why I still believe in love. Long may it last.

About Amy Andrews:
Amy Andrews was the kind of child who always had a story in her head. English was her favorite subject at school and she loved to write. Trouble is, once she started it was hard to stop her. Her teachers would ask for 100 words on her pet and she'd write 1000. They'd say, "Write a page describing your holiday," and she'd write 10. Editing has been a real challenge for Amy!
On her return to Australia, Amy discovered Medical romances and, as a nurse, started to read them out of professional interest. After reading one where a doctor gave a patient a bedpan, she was spurred to switch genres and have a go at writing a medical herself. Never in all her years of nursing had she met a doctor who had, or would even consider, giving a patient a bedpan! In the "real world" Amy is a part-time Paediatric Intensive Care Nurse and mother of two. Her goal is to write 20 books by the time she's forty.

Heartwarming
What a beautiful list. It is heartwarming, in this day of rampant divorce, to see a couple who stays in love and is working to make it work.
It is a good reminder that love might exist outside of the pages of a book.

Married at 16--still in love 28 years later!
Amy, my husband and I just celebrated (last Sat) our 28th Wedding Anniversary. We were married when I was 16 and I knew I would always be with him...forever.
Your "list" made me smile--I just loved it! My husband is wonderful, too. It does take work to communicate and discover what makes each other happy (and sad), but the reward can be so great. We have two beautiful children and we enjoy each other more, I think, today than when we started out.
I've been lucky and feel so blessed that I have been surrounded by love my entire life: first from my parents and family, then from my husband and children and our extended families. I know there may be some who haven't been so fortunate. So, to those I would say that it IS possible to love and be loved. Don't ever stop looking!

Wonderful post!
Oh, Amy, what a wonderful list. And I'm pretty sure he has his own list to sing your praises too. I found that while a man might start out a wonderful husband, it takes a wonderful wife to keep him that way.
Hmmm, maybe you can prevail on him to supply his own list?
