How many?

I think this question may have been asked to death already, but how many books do you normnally have on the go at once? I normally prefer  to have one book at a time on the go. Circumances have arisen where I have had as many as three on the go. Recently I've also had another book on the go that I put aside because books came that I would have liked to read right away. Maybe if the book didn't have definate break points, I wouldn't have set it aside as easily. Right now I have two on the go because one is an ebook and one is a print book. I like to read in bed just before I go to sleep and just before I get up. Since I only have a pc on which to read ebooks I take the print book to bed(right now it's not financially feasible for me to get a reader or laptop) and somehow I don't think dragging the pc to bed would be very comfortableSmile. I'm not finding the experience too  bad. I think because the themes for the two books tend not to have much in common it's not as confusing. I think it might get a little confusing for me right now if the themes were similar.

Do you ever toss books aside that "just aren't doing it" for you? I try to finish what I start(at least bookwiseSmile) So no matter how much the book isn't working for me I finish it. It may take me longer to read. And then the review might be a little shorter because I don't want to spend anymore time on the book and just move on to the next book(and hope it's better). But then sometime I write a long review to try and write out all the things that annoyed me. But then on the flipside some reviews for books that I really liked are short too because a) I don't want to give too much away and b)There just aren't enough wonderful words too describe the books.

How many books?

Well, as a general rule, I read one book at a time. I don't have the attention span (or the time) to read more than one at a time. I have on occasion put a book I've started aside and read another book before returning to it. I do this for books that for whatever reason, I'm determined to read, but at the time that I start it, it just isn't doing it for me. I've discovered that often times if I put it aside and read something else, when I go back to it, it's much easier to read. I used to just not read anything if the book I started wasn't doing it for me. I'd just wait it out until I got to a point where I decided to pick it back up. I don't know why I did this. Seems silly now. lol

I've only ever NOT finished a book I've started a couple of times. I generally try to slog through it if I can--even the ones that are genuinely horrid. But there have been a couple of books that either was WAY too horrible or too offensive or entirely too dull that I've actually put it in the donation pile to give away before I finish it. It only makes me sad that I've wasted the money on it. hehehehe

I would prefer to have just one

book going at a time.  If you had told me a few years ago that I would have several going at once I would have given you a look of disbelief.  What's going on in my life now is -- I have an audio for the kids going in the car, when I'm alone I have another audio going for me, I have a print or ebook going most of the time, too. I am also reading a French Silhouette Romance but that's very slow going . . . However, even with the 3-4 books at once, I don't have a problem keeping track of what's going on.

So the answer to the first question is I usually have up to 3 books going at once and sometimes I have more.

As for putting books down, I've gotten better at putting books down this year.  It makes me a little sad and a little proud at the same time.  I've never had a problem putting aside really bad books but the books I've put in the giveaway box this year (unread) were okay -- they just weren't pulling me in but with a tbr of about 2 years worth of reading, I shouldn't be spending time on books that aren't at least a 4 on a scale with 5 as the best.

FWIW,

Penn

PS -- you might ask any family/friends if they have a hand-me-down PDA you can have for a reader.  My favorite brother-in-law loves his toys so upgrades fairly regularly and will give us his old ones. I really like reading on the PDA at bedtime b/c I can have all the lights out and just set it down when I'm done.

RE: HOW MANY?

Interesting that so many have JUST ONE going at one given time.  I have four.  I find that I can keep control of "who-is-who- & what-is-what" with that number, but if I had more going at once than that, I probably couldn't tell you about any of them. Of course, it takes me longer to read one than it does some of you other readers.  I cannot digest one in one afternoon or one weekend like some can -- it seems my average is about a week.

HJ/ Marty,

WHY do you have four going at once? Inquiring minds want to know,

RE: HOW MANY?

Penn ~~ I keep four going at once, for if it was just one, I wouldn't be doing any justice at all to the 2008 Reading Challenge.  As it is, I feel that I don't read enough.  My pace would be as a snail's if I went one-at-a-time.  Additionally, having so many going at  once causes me to feel more a part of "the group" and more part of "the boards" and gives me more to say.

Definitely a one book gal

I am definitely a one book gal.  I can't handle reading more than 1 book at a time.  The only exception I could see to this would be a book a short stories.  I could see myself stopping after one to read another novel before returning to the next short story.

I've only stopped reading a book if it was too full of editing mistakes like misplaced paragraphs and stuff.  I read a Danielle Steel Biography that was like that so I stopped reading it.  Also, the Lord of the Rings.  It was so long and descriptive that I started dreading reading.  I finally decided that before I quit reading forever, I had to abadon the idea of reading that series.  I loved the movies, though!

I'm a one book at a time girl, too!!

Pretty much a one-book-at-a-time reader here, too.

... Unless I['m reading a longer ebook.  Then I need to move from the 'puter.  That doesn't happen a lot, mostly because I like to devote myself to one story.  And it does help that I read fast enough so that I don't ususally have to sit still very long.

how many?

Jana- My concentration takes a beating too when I read more than one book at a time. One of the main reason I finish a book is that I figure I spent the money on the book and I'm getting my money's worth.

Penn- I can see audio books because you can do other things while listen to the book. I've read one and a half print books and only about half the ebook(see how much reading I do in bed) also my friends were home from about 3 Tues morning til Friday morning and then I dogsat Thursday so I didn't have access to my ebook, plus in those 3 days we watched 8 movies.

HJ- WOW!!! 4 I'm impressed. I think I've only had three on the go at one time and that was accidental. Are the themes similar in all 4 or really different? I'm on a very erotic book and a Love Inspired Historical, so the themes and writing are world's apart.

Kel- I think having an anthology or a book like One Wild Wedding Night going at the same is easier to stop and start again than having to stop in the middle of a story.

Kate- I prefer one book at a time too. The instances where I've had two print books going at the same haven't been by choose, except maybe this time where I choose to try an ebook at the same time as a print book more or less to see how the two formats worked. And as long as the two themes are very different, I can see myself getting used to it.

Kalyko- I'm finding it hard to sit for long periods of time in front of the computer too I spend so much other time on the 'puter that I find it difficult to sit for long periods of time reading.

RE: HOW MANY?

Actually, one (read: bloke) would think that because the genre is the same, the story is the same, or, as most Americans' say, "it's (they're) the same - only the names have been changed" may apply to Harlequins and Imprints, it doesn't.  Each book IS different.  The characters are different.  I know it's going to end HEA, there's going to be an H/h, and by the end they may be wed - but there the similarities seem to stop.  Each character faces his/her own demons, and has her/his own "stuff" to work through.

Well, I have three going

Well, I have three going right now.  I can keep up with is who.  I also find that some books are "doing it" for me and I must change up.  It is nice to be reading so many at a time.  I can switch up depending on my mood!
