Yipes!
I just did the math and our book totals are running quite behind what they should in order to make the 100,000 by the end of the year. If we divide that by 12, we should be at 8333 by the end of this month...and we are just over 5000. I know I'm guilty of that too.. I'm running about 40 books behind my annual total last year of 200 books.
Guess that means we all have to chuck housework, take vacations and READ!

Funny, I was thinking about doing a blog
entry on how behind we are. It's worse than you calculated. by the end of March, we should be 1/4 of the way to our goal -- 25,000 not 8333. We need 8333 per month, not per quarter. So, I think that we need to recruit more people. If someone could work with ibob and do her entries one by one, that would help. I know two people here in the DFW area who are avid readers who aren't participating . . . I think those of us who participated the last couple of years need to give up the idea that everyone should do book reviews with words -- it might be more important just to get the reviews entered and counted.

I agree Penn ....
I don't need a review .... though it would be nice to have full details of what the book is ..... ie title, author, publisher, release year (if month not avail) ... imprint if applicable ..... that way we can at least look it up
and even if the review said "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" ..... I could live with that and that doesn't take much more effort at all ....
for those voracious readers that would prefer to do just lists, well if they post at the end of each week it really doesn't take very long to do the entries .... surely if you can take the time to make the list, you can make the time to post them so they count towards the charity

If I post only basic
If I post only basic information --title, author, date, what series, and back blurb, and opinion-- I could enter twice as many books--but I don't want to be criticized for not writing a more comprehensive review.

Ellen .....
Participating in the Challenge doesn't obligate you to compose a detailed review ...... I think if you're prepared to just say whether you liked the book or not is much more than some of the reviewers are doing now ...
so please, feel free to review in what ever manner works for you ..... if you have time to do more, and would like to, than please do ..... if not, no biggee ...
participating in the Challenge is supposed to be fun .... so have fun!
PS ... my reviews aren't very much ..... I try to write them in my own words when describing the synopsis ... but that's because I have cognitive issues and I find by writing the reviews in my own words helps be to retain more of the book for longer periods ... so for me, it's a bit of therapy ........ there is no set style for doing a review ... so do what works for you

Thanks Katerine -- I can do
Thanks Katerine -- I can do that. At the moment I am 10 books behind from the week that I did not have a computer and would love to get them posted. I'll try to do that today. I can usually read two a day unless something undue happens.

Ellen,
Since you feel behind, you could do a review that says something like, "I recommend (or don't recommend) this book. I'm 10 books behind on blogging, my apologies for not doing a more complete review. NFM" And then copy and paste that in the body of each of your "book review" entries?
BTW, it IS about having fun. I'm not looking at very many reviews b/c I'm so far behind on my own tbr but I've noticed that some people aren't putting one single word in the comment section of their reviews -- they're just getting the basic/required fields completed and moving on to the next book. Not ideal for bookaholics looking for more things to get hooked on but it IS ideal for getting our count up. Anyway, if you're feeling overwhelmed, just do what you must and what's right for you personally . . .

I would at least want to put
I would at least want to put the back blurb on the review. I have to say something or I'll feel bad aobut it. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll get most if not all posted today.

Hey everyone, I appreciate the encouragement but I'm reading
as fast as I can
I don't want us to succeed the challenge only to all end up divorced!
My DH is a dote (Penni you'll confirm that won't you
)
but I'd only read one more book a week if I didn't blog my entries,
I've managed to bring them down enough to interest people without going
overboard either in a positive or negative direction, and one more book
a week is only 52 more, it's not really going to change my total that
much
We need to find more Challengers like myself and Mary-Kay
And a good discussion is going to attract more new challengers faster than a list of books

I would love a vacation for
I would love a vacation for a month to just rea. I cannot keep up with my subscriptions. Well, personally blogging books is half the fun for me. Not for everyone but for me. I think everyone should blog books in the way that makes them happy.
The only way to reach the total is to get more people joining in my opinion. To that end, it would be nice if maybe Harlequin would include some kind of publicity for the Challenge in each and every subsciption...some kind of flyer or press release that each of us could use to spread the word outwards. Who knows what marketing is doing but hopefully they are marketing the Challenge heavily to those small bookstores that specialize in romance and reaching romance readers, inspirational readers, etc. and people likely to enjoy the books.

I am reading as i usually do....
and i am posting right after i read. I think some people have a back log.
I just copy the back of the book. Mostly I go to barnes and noble, copy their blurb (which doesnt always match, exactly) and paste it in my review.
then I just write a short yes I liked it,or didnt. And a little about why. If I really like the book I may write more. It takes, like, 5 minutes.
Depending upon the book (thickness, reading level, etc), I can start a new book about every 2.5 days. It also depends on what else is happening in my life.
I am sure we are all doing the best we can...

Got Books?
I haven't posted...
quite a few because my numbers are so lopsided against Harlequin right now. Till I get these review books caught up, I'm focusing on them and unfortunately none of them are Harlequin imprints....

I hear you all, Loud and CLear
Congrats on everyone who is doing so well with their reading. I agree, we need more people. I really just started this blog because I hadn't done the math, though I did it incorrectly, as was pointed out
Don't mind me.. I just have advanced degrees in math.
Snicker.
ANd Debbie, I hear you too! I have started emailing myself book reviews because I'm lopsided right now too. I think I probably have another 6-8 books waiting for me to find Harlequin pairs to go with them.
Back to reading!

concerned about numbers
I didn't end up joining the challenge until February. I knew about it earlier, but it took me several tries to figure things out.
I wonder if others felt challenged by getting involved in the challenge and just gave up? My first month's worth of reviews are very minimal because of my difficulties--I still don't say alot. I basically do a very brief synopsis of the book blurb. I do it this way because I want to spend more time reading.
I remember thinking when I looked at the the number when I first joined that the number was way behind the pace if we were going to reach 100,000. Did more people join as the year progressed a year ago?

Nancy
No Nancy - last year the Challenge was closed for sign up
from February onwards. This year they decided not to make it a "100
book" challenge, challengers can sign on at any time and read as many
or as few books as they like
which is why I'm currently reading #190 even though I have a ten book backlog

Hey Deb
Maybe we can push some of my harlequins over to your non harlequins and balance us out. I read almost all Harlequin. I think I have posted only one or two nons....Reading, enjoying the reading and blogging the reading are important for the number count. I know we are all wanting the donation to go through. I will try to read more and Sadhbh, maybe if you cut out the sleeping hours (ha ha
) you could add to your count!!

RE: WE'RE RUNNING BEHIND! READ FASTER LOL!
What a Catch-.22 this has turned out to be! You need to weigh the Pros and Cons of this, mates. I'm all for Reading and Literacy, and getting people that don't read (or who haven't read in a while) picking up books and magazines ~~ but not to the exclusion of their social lives, their children, careers, spouses/sig. others, etc.. AND spending money on books that s/he really doesn't have to spend. I DO WANT TO SEE US MAKE THE CHALLENGE THIS YEAR ~~ but I know we're woefully behind! However, if your day is brightened by reading a good book with a good HEA, the Author has done his/her job ~~ challenge succeded or not!

Too bad...
I can't have some of those Harlequin numbers to balance mine out better. I'm keeping a list though so maybe I can get them added along the way as I read more Harlequins.

Debbie - I've always taken it to mean that the 50/50 balance has
to be met by the end of the year, so you still have time to bring your H/S numbers up

yes...
I think that is so but last year since I started late, I realized that I read far more other imprints even though I buy a lot of Harlequins. So I'm trying not to do like I did last year where the 50/50 balance becomes a total impossibility for me to achieve.

Debbie - the rest of us don't mind whether you beg, borrow or
steal them instead of buying them (unless it's me you're stealing them from
) however if you don't read and recommend them how are we supposed to know we'll like them
