The Body Hunters

Positive I.D.Kathleen Long introduces her suspenseful new Body Hunters miniseries for Harlequin Intrigue with Positive I.D.

When he learned his very own daughter had gone missing, agent Will Connor instructed his covert team, the Body Hunters, to stop at nothing to find the girl-and it forced him to reunite with his "widow," Maggie. Although Maggie's anger was evident, so was the passion that had always existed between them. With the clock ticking, finding their daughter was top priority, but rekindling what he'd once shared with Maggie was critical to their future. Suddenly "till death do us part" had a whole new meaning, for nothing else would tear him away from his family a second time around.

About the author:

After a career spent spinning words for clients ranging from corporate CEOs to talking fruits and vegetables, Kathleen now finds great joy creating a world of fictional characters, places and plots. After tucking away her writing goals until her first daughter taught her that life is short and dreams are for chasing, Kathleen is now the award-winning author of breathtaking romantic suspense for the Harlequin Intrigue line

Along with her husband, infant daughter and one very neurotic Sheltie, Kathleen divides her time between suburban Philadelphia and the New Jersey seashore, where she can often be found with hands on keyboard—bare toes in sand—weaving tales. After all, life doesn't get much better than that.

Cold Case Connection It's a Wonderful Christmas

Waving hello!

Well, imagine my surprise when I look up from my deadline for my Nov Intrigue and taxes (cough, cough...still working on those) and here's a Forum titled The Body Hunters!  Wowzers.  What a thrill.

I'd love to talk writing and reading and bodies (and no...they sure don't have to be dead bodies) with anyone wanting to pop in and chat for a bit!

More than anything, I invite you to check out The Body Hunters, my first miniseries for Intrigue.  Writing these stories was an amazing experience.  I hope readers will fall in love with The Body Hunters team as much as I have!

A whole series of hunks like him?!

YAY!

The series sounds fascinating, Kath. My copy of Positive ID is on its way - can't wait to get my hands on him ... it.

How did you come up with the idea for the series?

The hunk on the cover!

Isn't the hunk on the cover great?!  I have to say that all three covers for The Body Hunters have been stunning.  Some of you already know this, but I designed a poster for my office with all three.  It sure is a great way to start the day!

The Body Hunters were born as I sat on the beach one day and thought -- what if there were a group of private citizens that went after the victims and villains society had forgotten or given up on?

POSITIVE I.D. is the first of the new trilogy.  The hero on the cover is Will Hunter -- one of the group's co-founders.  Will chose to fake his own death years earlier in order to save the lives of his wife and infant daughter.  When his daughter goes missing, he and The Body Hunters join forces with the wife who has thought her husband dead for 17 years!  Lots of HEAT in this one.  It was MUCH fun to write. ;o))

Thanks for asking, Tawny.  Hey, has everyone checked out Tawny Weber's Blaze-ing Hot Books?  I hope so!

A whole series of HUNKS!

Anna -- thanks for stopping by!  As to the why behind The Body Hunters, I loved the secret society idea for a group of private individuals.  Cold cases seemed a natural fit as a taking off point for a series.  Now if you want to know why?...  Have I ever mentioned the hunk-covered collages I make for each book as I'm writing?  Let's just say that The Body Hunters collages are STILL hanging over my desk.  I don't think I'll ever take them down.

So the real reason is that the series gave me an excuse to post more hunk pictures and tell the DH they're research. <shrug>  Tough work, isn't it?

I LOVE the cover for this book.  Actually, I love the cover for the second book in the series, too.  COLD CASE CONNECTION.  What I really want to know is how the hero on that book tore his shirt sleeve...whoa baby but that's a great touch!    COLD CASE CONNECTION is a May release, right?  Will there be more books in THE BODY HUNTERS series?  Hope so!

Thanks for the great reads & can't wait for the next installment of what's sure to be a classic series!

I forgot to say that I have one of your awesome postcards on my desk.  When I need inspired, I take a look at the hunks on your covers!!  The cover faeries were good to you!!!

Saying hello - take two!

As you can see, I got a bit of a false start on the forum two weeks ago.  Whoops!  Can you blame me?  I was excited at the chance to chat about The Body Hunters!

Please don't be shy.  Ask away with your questions, make comments, or chat in general.

I'm looking forward to a great week and thank you eHarlequin for the chance to visit for a while!

Janice Lynn!

Janice -- thanks for stopping by!  I'm so glad you're enjoying the hunks of The Body Hunters.  Aren't they incredible?  The art department nailed each character as well as the mood and scenes for all three books.  I couldn't be happier -- or more grateful.

So far, there are three books planned in the series, with the hope of more in the future.

April 2008 - POSITIVE I.D.
May 2008 - COLD CASE CONNECTION
June 2008 - UNDERCOVER COMMITMENT

As to how the hero's shirt was torn in Cold Case Connection...let's just say there was a fire bombing and he ripped his shirt saving the heroine's life.  Typical day for a Body Hunter, although the hero -- Cam -- isn't a Body Hunter, it's Lily in that book who's part of the team.  As to the steamy tension sizzling between the two...you'll just have to read the book to find out more about that! ;o))

And everyone, please give Janice a big WOO HOO on her recent National Readers Choice Award nomination!  WTG!!

Yay Janice!!

and Yay Kath, I can't wait to read these books.  I'm forcing myself to hold off until I have all three in my hands so I can read all day long and immerse myself, they sound that incredible!  Especially that you have a heroine body hunter!  Tell me more about her. Laughing

Female Body Hunter

Okay, so I was envisioning other causes for that torn shirt, but I really do like it.  :)

Thanks for the congrats on the NRCA final.  I was totally not expecting that, so it was really cool when I got the call.  :)

Tawny, I admire you for being able to hold out until you get all three in hand.  Instead, I'm going to be clamouring for that third book after I read Cold Case Connection.  I really love the idea of a Female Body Hunter.  Kath's heroes are always so wonderful, it's going to be interesting to see how Cam reacts to a woman with a strong enough personality to work for the agency.  Wow.

Kathleen, can you tell us about the third book in the series?  The one that comes out in June?

The Doctor's Pregnancy Bombshell Harlequin Medicals 1/1/08
The Heart Surgeon's Secret Son 3/1/08

Female Body Hunter

Tawny -- I'm thrilled you're excited to read the series!  No pressure for me. ;o))  The group is made up of an interesting mix of individuals.  One of the newer team members is Lily Christides, who was recruited for her expertise in tracking financial transactions and accounts worldwide.  In COLD CASE CONNECTION, the case turns personal when Lily's sister, a well-known television reporter, is brutally murdered.  The authorities -- including the hero, Cam -- have their suspects, but Lily -- true to Body Hunter mentality -- can't help but think the authorities might be wrong.  Lily is a get-to-the-point, no-holds-barred kind of gal, and in her, Cameron Hughes has met his match. ;o))

Undercover Commitment

Janice -- you're right -- the third in the trilogy comes out this June!  UNDERCOVER COMMITMENT is the story of Kyle Landenburg, a member of The Body Hunters with a traumatic past and an intuitive ability he'd rather deny.  RTBookReviews just gave the book 4 1/2 stars, and I'm thrilled!  They called it stellar storytelling.  Talk about making my day!  Heck, my month!

The back cover blurb describes the story so perfectly, I'll paste that here. ;o))

Walking away from beautiful Eileen Caldwell had been one of the toughest assignments undercover agent Kyle Landenburg had ever faced. Now, after a frantic phone call, he was back by her side, protecting her from a past that had dangerously resurfaced. Keeping her safe was his job, but even as they dodged bullets, keeping his hands to himself was quickly becoming Kyle's greatest challenge yet. As a seasoned agent, Kyle knew better than to give in to passion when a client's life was on the line. But when she reached for him, would the temptation prove strong enough to make him cross it?

Those of you who've read POSITIVE I.D. will recognize Eileen as the resort manager on Isle de Cielo who is instrumental in helping Maggie and Will Connor's search for their missing daughter.

Positive ID

Positive ID sounds so exciting and I can hardly wait to read it.  You know, you got me pulled into your writing when I read Get Bunny Love a long while ago.  Congrats on your new release.

The Body Hunters Series

Your series sounds fascinating.  I love how you twine the romance in with the suspense in your stories.  I do have to admit, though, the way your brain works scares me a little.  How do you come up with those wickedly cruel villains?  Some of them scare the bejeebers out of me.  Like Silence of the Lamb kind of stuff.  Yet I keep coming back for more...guess you have me totally hooked.

Thanks for the excellent reads!

Marlene -- thanks for stopping by!  I hope you know how much I appreciate your support and encouragement. ;o))  Get Bunny Love is at the opposite end of the spectrum from my Harlequin Intrigues, isn't it?  I miss writing the humor, but I must admit that I love digging into an intricate plot, piling on the threats to the H/h, and then twisting everything.  I must be a little bit evil, I suppose!  LOL

Thanks so much for your kind words!  LOL on the villains.  My sister-in-law frequently asks my DH if he sleeps with one eye open.  He's my first reader on each suspense, and quite honestly, I do think I make him a bit nervous sometimes.  Hmm.  On second thought, maybe it's not me who makes him nervous but the stack of how-to-commit-the-perfect-murder research books I keep sitting around!

I'm like Tawny, can't wait to sit down and read all three, one after the other. They all sound fascinating!

Is it hard writing a series like this? How do you keep track of all the characters and info from book to book?

And, most important - will there be more Body Hunters after these three? (Yes, I'm greedy!)

LOL on your husband sleeping with one eye open. I think all those books sitting around would make me nervous, too.

Are there plans for more The Body Hunter books?

While I was at the Romantic Times convention in Pittsburgh, I saw lots of cool The Body Hunter book bags during the book signing.  Will you be giving away any of these on your site any time soon?  How can a Kathleen Long fan win one of those?

Keeping track of the series

Anna -- thanks so much for the great questions!  And thanks for saying you're looking forward to the series.  Writing The Body Hunters was definitely an adventure for me, but the continuity of the team itself made each story a pleasure!  One continuing character is a retired librarian who is a computer whiz.  She's based on a dear friend of mine from my Project Linus days.  Not only does she lend serious brain power to each investigation, but she makes a quilt for each victim during the search -- the outward symbol of the team's hope for a positive outcome.

She's one example of how the continuing characters actually made the process of writing a series easier for me than writing three stand-alone stories.  Yes, I had to learn the ins and outs of each plot and hero/heroine, but the team characterizations were already in place, so the writing felt natural to me.  Hope that makes sense!

As for the stories themselves, each is a stand alone mystery, yet tied by subplot issues.

Whether or not there will be additional Body Hunters adventures depends on the powers that be. ;o))  Fingers crossed!  I have SO many ideas for future stories.  And one of the team co-leaders, Rick, has yet to have his story, which I'd love to give him.

Win an autographed tote...with books!

Jana -- I hope I answered your question about additional Body Hunters titles above.  I have ideas for Cam's partner from COLD CASE CONNECTION, secondary character Michael (female) from UNDERCOVER COMMITMENT, The Body Hunters co-director Rick...and more!  I'd love to see the series go on forever.  Wouldn't that be something?!

As for those totes -- weren't they amazing?!  Fabulous HMB Medical author, Janice Lynn and I designed roomy red totes with our logos on either side.  They were a huge hit at the RT Bookfair and we both have extras.  Don't you love extras??  LOL

Let's have some fun!

In honor of your question, I think I'll draw one lucky commenter's name at the end of this week to win a tote (autographed by Janice and me!) filled with the winner's choice of three books from my backlist.  After all, I love giving away prizes!!

Your books are always a terrific blend of romance and mystery/suspense. Does that blend come naturally to you or are your first drafts heavier on one aspect than the other?

As for your question about balancing romance and suspense -- I'd have to say every book is different, but the mix seems to come naturally to me.  The book I just turned in was the exception, however.  The suspense took over and I had to concentrate on threading the romantic conflict through as I polished.  Usually, the two go hand in hand for me.

Great question!  Thanks.

Wasn't sure until...

I started reading through the comments. now I REALLY want to check out the series. The covers are wonderful eye candy and I love the idea of cold case files.

I'm going to go the route of collecting all three before reading even though you've said they each stand alone. when i read a series of books i like having them all. having to wait after reading one or two kills me... just like those blasted end of season cliff hangers that TV shows sometimes torture us with.
