March 18: Love Springs Eternal by Debby Giusti

Spring is just around the corner, and as Alfred, Lord Tennyson wrote, "In Photobucketthe spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love." Of course, Lord Tennyson penned that line in the 1800s. If alive today, he'd probably cut and paste to end up with a generic, "Everyone's thinking about love." Less gender bias, no age-discrimination and definitely more PC. No matter the lines or when they were written, at this time of year, Love Is In the Air, which is what Perry Como first crooned to our parents and grandparents back in 1958.

Photobucket
Over the years, writers and composers have focused on love. Do a Google search for love, and you'll get 79,000,000 results! Evidently everyone's talking-and writing-about the subject. Whether classical literature or category romance, art, music or Internet blogs, love is the topic of choice.

PhotobucketAsk any neonatal nurse and she'll tell you about an infant's innate need for love. In years past, premature infants confined to incubators and isolated from their parents languished from the lack of human contact. Once the "failure to thrive" phenomenon was recognized, policies changed. Now the most fragile of infants are touched and caressed. Despite overwhelming medical complications, these babies survive and thrive because of the power of love.

PhotobucketThat same phenomenon plays out in nursing homes. Without a caring and attentive staff, elderly patients--alienated from their families through death or distance or indifference--can and do experience that same failure to thrive. Even the heartiest of souls lose the will to live in the absence of love.

Photobucket

Why? Because love is at the essence the human condition. Love gives meaning to our lives. It uplifts and frees and transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Photobucket

Love is universal. It transcends borders or boundaries and is found in all cultures and races. Multi-faceted and diverse, love defies logic or science or the laws of nature.

Photobucket

Never self-centered, true love focuses on others and seeks the greater good. It manifests in service, in heroism, in a profound sense of duty and dedication, in social justice, in commitment and in faithfulness.

Photobucket
Love begets love and is never exclusive, never alienates, but rather embraces, accepts and affirms. Love can only be viewed in the positive. Any negative implication is not love, but the absence thereof that springs from pride or fear or self-centeredness.

Photobucket

As romance readers, we understand the power of love. We also know the pull of a good love story that transports us to a world where dreams come true, love conquers all and heroes and heroines live happily ever after.

Now what's my story? I'm definitely in the lived-happily-ever-after category. I had two wonderful parents who loved me unconditionally. My mother taught me about God and the power of prayer and that life should be lived to the fullest. From my father, a career officer in the US Army, I learned about duty and commitment and self-sacrifice.

My hubby's an Army guy as well. He's also my hero and the love of my life. We've been blessed with three wonderful children who are better people than I could ever hope to be, two beautiful grandchildren who fill my heart with joy and a great son-in-law and beautiful daughter-in-law.
Do I believe in love? You bet!

Now what about you? Tell me your love story or your thoughts on the following questions:

  • Looking back, do you recognize a time when you were transformed through the love of another?
  • Do we have to love ourselves before we can truly love another?
  • Does love need to be experienced before it can be understood?
  • What is the greatest love?

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your comments.

Wishing you abundant blessings and lots of love!

My March release, MIA: MISSING IN ATLANTA, is dedicated to our brave men and women in uniform so I chose pictures for this blog that highlight their dedication and commitment. Please join your thanks with mine for the outstanding and courageous jobs they do each day. God bless them and God bless the United States of America!

About Debby Giusti:

Debby Giusti is a medical technologist who loves working with test tubes and petri dishes almost as much as she loves to write. Growing up as an army brat, Debby met and married her husband—then a captain in the army—at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Together they traveled the world, raised three wonderful army brats of their own and now see the military tradition carried on in their son who's also in the army. Always busy with church, school and community activities, Debby knew it was time to settle down and write her first book when she and her family moved to Atlanta, GA. Despite occasional moments of wanderlust, Debby spends most of her time writing inspirational romantic suspense for the Steeple Hill line.

Inspiring, as always, Debby!

LOVED your post.  It gave me pause today, made me rethink something that I've been fretting about all morning which I've realized, in the scheme of things, amounts to next to nothing.  Your post changed the direction of my day, and turned my mind to more productive and positive things.  Thank you!  (Can't wait to read your latest release, MISSING IN ATLANTA.)

Great and Inspiring!

Thanks for the awesome post. I'm just getting ready to go to my favorite coffee shop to start writing, so your post has given me a boost in the inspirational department! God is so good, thanks for the positive, upbeat message...

God Bless

The greatest love

Great post, Debby! I grew up in a loving home and married a wonderful guy. My husband, our children, their spouses and our four grandchildren bring such joy to my life. But I believe the greatest love is God's unconditional, sacrificial love for each of us.

Hi, Debby, what a great post. I had a terrific Christian family too. We had no money, but we had parents that just seemed to absolutely adore us, for no reason I can figure out, eight kids, tiny house, no money, you'd have thought they'd want us to...I do

Everlasting love

Hi Debby, I love the blog. My life was transformed three years ago tomorrow (Yeah!) when I married my wonderful husband! The love of my life, hand picked by God in a desert in Iraq. I am so blessed. The first picture brings back memories of the 2nd happiest day of my life when my hubby returned home after his second tour of duty. I definitely learned what sacrificial love was as my husband stood up and fought for freedom. Thank you for raising such a wonderful son!

Thanks!

My Sweet DIL!

In case some of you didn't make the connection, Katie is the wonderful--and beautiful-- woman who married my son!  She's a great Army wife and the best daughter-in-law I could ever have.

I wrote MIA when Joe was deployed for the second time to Iraq and dedicated the book to the brave men and women in uniform who protect and defend our country.  Katie and I continue to pray each day for all those serving in harms way.  Email the names of your loved ones in the military to debby@debbygiusti.com so I can add them to my prayer list.

Through Thick and Thin

I've been married to a career army officer for 28 years.  Together with our son we have moved around the world, dealt with family losses and debilitating health issues yet we remain committed to one another.  Why?  Because, as he always tells me, I am the love of his life and we made a promise to God in front of Grandma and Grandpa (his).

I have been struggling with kidney failure for 4 years and throughout that time he has always been there for me. We never thought that the words "through sickness and in health" would hit us so early in our marriage.

My husband is my star and shines brightly on our family.

P.S.  I am looking forward to meeting you at your book signing here at Fort Knox.  Your son is our neighbor and we couldn't have asked for a better one.  He and his wife are wonderful!  You are blessed.

What a surprise!

Hi CatSet!  How nice of you to stop by and post such a beautiful tribute to your military hubby!  He's a jewel and so are you.  True love is most often realized when times get tough, as you so eloquently mentioned.

I'm looking forward to meeting you as well.  Katie always talks about her good friend next door!

For anyone in the Fort Knox area, I'll be at The Bookstore in Radcliff, KY, on Saturday, March 29.  See you there!

Sweet Friends

Now I know why you're such a good hugger.  Lovely post and so true, Debby. Love is needed to survive.  Even reasonable love of yourself is just important. That's the only way anyone can show they love others.

Southern Magic!

Carla, thanks for stopping by and leaving your words of wisdom!  You're right.  We need to be accepting of ourselves before we can truly love another.

I'm glad I was finally able to read it during a lull in the storms today!  (I've popped in to the site a few times, but could never stay long.)

I'm a Navy brat, so I can totally identify!  Cool  I think love is vitally important in a military life.  I'm so thankful for all the love I've had in my life!

Really looking forward to MIA: Missing in Atlanta!  Smile

Greatest Love

The Bible says, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13

In addition to our Savior, I think those serving in the Armed Forces show the greatest love for us and for our country.

So, thank you, to those who have and are serving. And thank you, too, to their families. We appreciate your sacrifice.

Angie, South Carolina

You're welcome!

Mom says Hi, too!  I'm glad we weathered the storms, too.  We have a lot of flooding around us, but not on our property, PTL.  (Well, aside from one spot on the driveway where there's a little standing water, which I should see if I can drain so we don't develop an early plague of mosquitoes...)  A lot of property has been damaged, however, and one man is missing and presumed to have drowned.  Everyone is still praying and looking for him.

Please pray for Mom.  She has a bad case of trigeminal neuralgia since late last night, and it's so painful.  Thanks!
