I hate when I am reading along and all of a sudden something doesn't make sense...."she plopped into a comfy armchair.....she leaped off the sofa...". So how does one go from sitting on the armchair to the sofa with no movement in between. When something like this happens, I always think that I have missed something and have to go back and reread and reread and reread until I know it is not me, but the editing. Sorry pet peeve issue
(growl) and I just had to let it out

LOL
I know what you mean. We readers can get so picky.
I got ticked when I read a book--maybe about a year or so ago--where the heroine started out as a brunette then 3/4 of the way through the book she was suddenly described as a blonde. So I had to go back to the beginnng to make sure I didn't made a mistake. I didn't. Grrr.
LOL!

and when you think that me and my eagle eye are just
sitting here waiting for the offer to read a book ahead of time
there's no understanding it, is there?

Pet peeve
There's no excuse, Bonsai. Okay, we sometimes just lose focus for a moment or two and mistakes slip in, but the editor reads it, the copy editor reads it -- and they are a picky lot, believe me -- and then the author reads it again at page proof stage. I guess the brain just reads what it expects to read and it takes a totally fresh eye to pick up on these things.
Worse, for me, are the really bad mistakes. I once read a book where the author had the wrong river as the border between South Africa and what is now Zimbabwe. Major best-selling thriller writer. How could I believe another thing he wrote if he didn't get that right?

Liz that is probably even worse
to read something and know the geography is wrong. I didn't realize so many people read through the book befroe publication. I can understand the author missing something as they have read it so many times. I do that in my own work writing, but for more than one editor to miss it when that is what they are....yicks

Darn it again
This must be my week for getting into poorly edited stories. I complained about the chair/sofa and today I am into another series of boo boos. Only more in this book. The most recent is "Aren't we're supposed to be..." double growl

RE: PET PEEVE ALERT
So I read the blog, jumped into my car and drove my truck all the way over to my neighbour's moblile home next door in the palatial estate he lives in on the other side of ton!

Thank you HJ
aka Marty. aka Hockey Jock. You made my day! At least I didn't pay for your (tongue in cheek) errors. Had to read it to my husband though as he has had to listen to my complaints

I read a book once....
where (it may be a gramatical error) where it said something like "...she ran down the sidewalk and turned into a park...." I was picturing a person running down the sidewalk and POOF! she magically turned into a park. There was grass and trees, and there were people playing with a ball, next to a big water fountain, all over her.

Got Books?
Thanks Terri
These are the kinds of things my dad is forever going on about. He will see a sign for a garage sale and then ask what size garage they are selling. Yard sales get him too.....will they move the grass to his yard or does he have to move the yard himself....Drives me nuts, but he is technically correct!

wouldn't he have a heyday with a street sale

mistakes happen
but I don't blame them on the author (at least, usually I don't). In my stay-at-home days I volunteered for a Down syndrome support group (and yes, that is how parents of children want 'Down syndrome' to appear in print, in the USA). I was there newsletter editor. I also wrote personal essays for the newsletter. I had my dh proof read everything, especially my one writings. It helped to have another 'eye' look at everything. But I do get annoyed with all the readers in between the author and publication.
Like Liz, if there is some major gaffe, such as a river in the wrong location, I do question the research capabilities of the author. So, I guess for me, it really depends on the type of error.
Nancy
I find it funny when I see
when I see ads for, BABY SALES (isnt it illegal to sell babies?), or HUGE SALES (what exactly is a Huge, and what colors and sizes do they come in?).
Most people dont use their garages, so they may as well sell them. Mine is a storage space.
I might as well sell my Yard, as well....let someone else keep it up.
Terri
Got Books?
Terri ---I agree with
Terri ---I agree with you.....anyone one want to buy a garage can buy mine as long as the detritus goes with it. And the yard can go too (even if I do pay someone to cut the grass and weeds).
ELLEN TOO
A true teacher is a person who, at the end of the school day, still likes children!
Ellen Too, I am still
Ellen Too, I am still trying to find someone to maintain my yard. We switched to "plastic grass" aka artificial turf a few years ago, so no mowing. It was either that or keep resodding as our puppy thought it more fun to eat the roots than the grass. We are limited in the amount of grass and high water plants we can have in the city anyway.
Terri, you must have the same sick sense of humor as my father. He has been known to go on about baby sales too. Never seen a street sale, though, if in good condition it might be worth buying for NM. We were just rated as having the third worst streets in the nation! Who keeps these kinds of statistics!

I'm happy to see this blog
as I am constantly pointing out errors in the books in my reviews. I knew more than just the author proofed the book, but for so many to read it and the mistakes still get in print, tsk, tsk. Wouldn't be so bad, but as you say, you go back and re-read just to see if you've missed something. It doesn't stop us from reading though does it!
Have a great weekend!
Lynn
Lynn, I didn't realize so
Lynn, I didn't realize so many read it either and as I told my husband it wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't paying for them, but to pay for them and get errors
(growl).
