The principal at my son's school asked me if I wanted to help out in the lunchroom two hours every day. I would keep order and watch them on the playground, etc. He called me in for an interview and I realized it is a JOB not a volunteer opportunity.
I start tomorrow after I have my orientation in the morning. He saw my education on my app and couldn't talk me into substitute teaching but now I am going to help with the school newsletter as some of my old freelance work was on the application I filled out. (It's bad to leave stuff off, right?)
I know this is goofy but I love kids and I think it will be fun. My 8yr old thinks it is cool and my 10yr old is glad the elementary grades are split into 2 schools on our base so I won't be at his school.
Just had to share. I get to hang out with kids and still have plenty of time to write.

Not laughing!
Angel, when both my girls started school and I was still unpubbed, I got a job doing lunchroom at their school. I loved it. It was great. My kids actually chose to stay with their own supervisor but loved seeing me outside. It got me out of the house, it was a great work environment and the kids were a hoot.
I sold at the end of that year and didn't go back...it was too hard with where the hours fell during the day, it seemed to break everything up. But I stayed on as a sub and I still fill in every now and then - I actually just finished 5 weeks when someone took a leave. And I volunteer every week too.
I hope it works out well for you!

Heyyyy! I sub :)
Hey angel, I am a substitute teacher and let me tell you: It's no fun. I love to instruct people of all ages, but its stressful when you're in a different location all the time.
But congratulations anyhow on your job! I love hearing good news.
Cruel & unusual punishment....
Angel,
When begged, I mean asked, to sub JUST YELL "NO!!!" LOL!
I subbed off and on the last 8 years. This year is my first year as a full time teacher. I LOVE my job now! I HATED being a substitute!!!! I went home with a stress headache almost everyday!!!! I can't believe I still finished my degree in education after that!
If working part-time in the school is something you've been wanting to do, then you'll enjoy it! The kids will enjoy you because your not their mean, old teacher!!!

Lunchroom is not subbing
Oh lord, I wouldn't substitute teach either!
But I sub for lunchroom, just in this one school. I know most of the kids and all the staff. It's a way for me to get my kid fix without working the job all the time.
I have a lot of teachers tell me they don't know how I do lunchroom. I really enjoyed it, to be honest...and I've done lots of in-class work too and lunchroom can be a lot less stressful than actually keeping a class.
Just my 2 cents...I still think it's great, Angel! ANd yay on the newsletter! it's all about finding places and things that you enjoy and give you a sense of fulfilment.

You guys rock.
Donna, I am so glad you know what it means to me. I am so amazed what I learn about everyone on this board.
I could never sub because I can barely keep my Sunday school class disciplined for an hour.
It feels good to be understood and know I can blog even about the silly little things. Now time for bed. I don't want to be tired and grouchy- I want the kids to call me the 'nice' lunch lady.
