My goal of getting the dusty tbr pile down...

So I have several types of tbr piles. There are the ones from 1 month or 2 months that have been set aside they don't quite have much dust on them yet so they are the recent tbr piles. Then there are the ones 3 months or older and they have a nice collection of dust so they are called the Dusty tbr pile. The Dusty tbr pile is my goal to attack and try to get down this year. The ofcourse there are the one who not only have dust but cobwebs on them too. I plan on attacking them too. My buying was settling down until I joined the Rhapsody Book Club to get certain books that I really really want. But I plan on limiting myself with those since I really don't like lots of large hardbacks around they take up way more room than the paperbacks. Basically I feel caught up with most of the books from the Harlequin site now I want to get caught up with my non Harlequins that I have written in a notebook.  I have my work cut out. But it should be fun!!

We ALL are book addicts!

There are a lot of book addicts in this community.  We all just need to find that balance, however hard it may be to get there!  My goal this year is to attack my tbr stack too.  Unfortunately it is 9 boxes large! Each of the boxes the size that 10 reams of paper come in.  I know I have my Kindle now, but I so need to work on getting through my paperbacks and hardbacks. Laughing

You know how old your TBR's are??

Wow... now that's organized Sarah.  Wink

I on the other hand can tell only if a book is New-new or UBS-new... but other than that I usually ~ uh, eventually Embarassed ~ will shelve my books in alphabetical order.  But I do keep the category romances separate from the novels ~ that's pretty much the only separation that I've got.  Otherwise, well, let's just say that my shelves are getting more and more crowded and it's getting harder and harder to find a place for them.

lol

I'm not really that organized I just can tell how old they are by how much dust has collectedCool but I do try to keep them seperated from the newer ones so there won't be a confusion or..the newer ones start to collect all that dust. lol

Talk about organized!

I finally reached the point that I'm just putting books in boxes so when I got hunting for something, well, I'm digging through the boxes like a mad woman!  But keepers I've read ARE alphabetized!!

Now thats organized!

I should try alphabetizing that would probably help finding certain books I hate when I know I have a book and find myself digging like a nutcase looking for it lol.

Organization rules!

Huh.. the only thing that I have alphabetized are my TBR's... I don't have enough shelf space downstairs to do that for my keepers... which, coincidentally grow at pretty close to the same rate as my TBR's.

Debi, I did used to have my TBR's in plastic milk boxes (or whatever they're called) but they were two deep and I could never see the books behind.  It kinda defeated the purpose of organizing them.  *sigh*

I know what you mean

For awhile I had books in those large tupperware containers but that also defeated the purpose of not seeing them and forgetting about them. Now I have finished books that I'm not keeping in them. Speaking of that I really need to make a trip to the library I am running out of books read room.

Space for books

Boy I can certainly agree.  There are some shelves in the garage that I'm just aching to abscond with ~ I really don't think my dh is really going to use them ~ and then I have to find a place to put 'em.
And hey, whaddya know... my oldest daughter is now in Egypt and, other than being expanded play space for the little 'uns, it's basically just an unused room... Perfect for shelves!

*now all I have to do is sneak it past my husband

lmao!

I wish I had the money just to build a giant room that could be a library of my own and just stack and stack books to my hearts content! One of my rooms is getting there with all the stacks of boxes everywhere!Innocent

Room for books

The first kid to move out I am staking claim to his room to make a library and maybe just maybe organize the books.  I'm not sure I want to spend the time organizing that I could be reading.

Organizing

I don't even want to THINK about the time the organizing would take!! Frown

My 2008 goal

I WILL get through by tbr! I WILL get through by tbr! I WILL get through by tbr! However, I have already found two more books reviewed that I must buy.

I WILL get find a new home for my older books! I WILL get find a new home for my older books!  I WILL get find a new home for my older books! Haven't found a home yet and the piles of boxes keeps getting taller, there must be someplace. None of the UBS I contacted here would take them nor would the library (picky people!)Smile

Bonsal

lol

Ahahahah Bonsal! That is a good chant! I need to use that myself. And darn the picky people! I would think they would grab good books up!Undecided

Sandi and kids moving out...

... I so want to do that!  My eldest daughter left for the Yukon last January and is now in Cairo ~ bit of a difference there ~ and her room, while still called "Lisa's room" is now a TV room, extra playroom for the babysitting kids and the room where stuff gets put for the time being.  We still have all her furniture, which isn't really a lot and I'd LOVE to change it to a library, but I'm gonna have to wait 'til the 3 rugrats that I have are a little older and less into *playing*... a couple or three years oughta do it.
Then there's my son's room in the basement.  It's still got most of his stuff 'cause he's living in a bachelor suite with not that much space and Stephen is very into the minimalist approach to decorating... I think all of his exposure to the Japanese and Chinese cultures, while learning the languages, had a far bigger impact on him than I ever thought possible.  So, until he gets a bigger place and / or moves away, his room will remain "Stephen's room"... people kept telling us... that just 'cause the kids move away, doesn't mean that they'll be gone for good... *sigh*... they're so right.  Surprised

Just because kids move away

it doesn't mean their stuff moves with them

Which is why I'm
resisting DH's attempts to give the boys one room each (they're only
four and five for heaven's sake!) and maintaining that when we get the
garage built, and we can empty the attic into the garage and convert
the attic into the master bedroom, the room the boys are currently in
is becoming the LIBRARY

If at a subsequent stage they have to
"borrow" the library for study purposes, well then they have to, but
that won't make it any less the library (= not their space to clutter
up)

I beg to differ

My old room at my parents' house is now Zoe's room. Zoe is the cat.  How come she gets to have her own room!  My brother's room is now the office/junk room.  The old office/junk room is now the guest room.  I still have stuff there, but its only a couple of boxes. They will eventually make it to my place I guess.

Great post Sarah and "Oh my" can i relate to everyone's comments!

My goal is to hopefully one day figure out how to accomplish this goal myself!

Goodwill

You know I have been thinking about seeing if some of our Goodwill want some of my books they are almost like new so whoever would be looking for them would get a steal and I would feel good. Libraries, goodwill, and who knows a road side free book giveaway lol! We don't have many ubs here and the one that I know of is out of the way for me so if I can get my books to these places then I will feel better about my monster tbr pileLaughing

my 2 cents

I go to Costco and get the trays they stack the pretzels on because the sides are reinforced. They are approx 2' by 3' and hold roughly 40-50 books. Using trays allows each title to be read. They stack well but are not that sturdy and there is a bit of weight so the bottom tray tend to bulge out at the sides. They were not in any order up til now.

Currently I cataloged all the TBR and have gotten into the trays. There were a lot of unread books and some totally wonderful books there I hope to get to read.... someday. The current count is 1696 and I have 2 partial bookcases and approx 30 smaller trays of older books to go. I know many have been read because I only found 3 In Death books and I know I have all of them. Some were given to me when a friend moved so some of them I know I would never have bought.

As for the kids room..... it is really small and I would love to use it better but it still has her furniture and old books & toys in it and she comes home every month or so. I use her bed as a staging area for laundry but when she comes home for the weekend, it quickly gets dispersed. I did however just order 2 bookcases from Office Max - On Sale - delivered at no charge. I am waiting for them to get here. (I know where one will fit nicely but the other .... still working on that.
