Finding Home by Cindi Myers

Rita Sierra believes there's nothing left for her on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation but bad memories and can't wait to move away. Paul Redhorse, home on leave from the Army, looks forward to the day he can return to ‘the Rez' for good, where he'll work to improve the lives of his people, the Lakota Sioux. Rita thinks one man can't possibly have any impact on the problems in Pine Ridge, but Paul is determined to prove her wrong. He can make changes, especially where it counts the most — in Rita's heart.

About The Author

Cindi believes in love at first sight, good chocolate, cold champagne, that people who don't like animals can't be trusted, and that God obviously has a sense of humor. She also believes in writing fun, sexy romances about people she hopes readers will fall in love with.

Blessed with an overactive imagination and a love of reading, Cindi wrote her first story at age eight about the family's Siamese cat. At age twelve she submitted her first manuscript, hand-written and illustrated with crayon drawings, to Little, Brown and Company. She received a very kind rejection letter advising her to study hard and keep working and one day she might be a real writer.

In addition to writing, Cindi enjoys reading, quilting, gardening, hiking, and downhill skiing. She lives in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado with her husband, who she met on a blind date and agreed to marry six weeks later, and three spoiled dogs.

Great Start!

Cindi,

I so love the online reads that are tied to a book.  This was a great start...now I just have to find a way to hold-out until the next chapter's up!!

Thank you, Holly.

I LOVED writing this story. The characters and setting really came to life for me and I hated to leave them when it was over.

And it seems appropriate that this story debuts on a day when we honor the men and women, past and present, who serve in the military.

Chapter 1

Cindi, I really enjoy your books and can't wait to read more about Paul, who I'm pretty sure I would also like to meet (fanning self).  Oh, um, yeah, and Rita, too.

Looking forward to more!

Great Start!

I think the beginning already has me drawn in. My mind is just popping with questions. I can't wait for tomorrow just to see if Rita actually calls it off with that hunk, Paul.

Great first two chapters.

Great first two chapters.  I love stories with a message.

I'm loving this story so

I'm loving this story so far.  Can't wait to figure out what's going to happen.  It starts in 2002, so I'm wondering if she gets pregnant and he doesn't find out till much later when he comes back to work on the rez...   my mind keeps going...

I was thinking the same

I was thinking the same thing! I can't wait to see what happens.

"There is nothing like a good novel that gets your heart pumping,.."

I agree with Papaya and Alexaryan

I'm also loving this story so far, and am wondering if she will turn up pregnant and he doesn't find out until after he gets out of the military since this story starts in 2002.

It will be interesting to see how everything plays out.

Good imaginations

I am loving reading all y'all's opinions about what happens next. You have good imaginations!

This just gets better and

This just gets better and better.  I can understand both points of view, since I have held both at one time or another in my life.  It'll be interesting to see how you resolve this conflict.

Wow, this does keep getting

Wow, this does keep getting better and better!  I can totally see both points of view too!  Personally, I'm pretty sure I would stay on the rez and try and make it better, but you never know until you are really in the situation.

I noticed that the time was 2002

so I am sure that something will happen and they will meet up several years later.  After he comes back to the rez and something happens to her brother and she comes back.

Will look for this book this month.  Glad that we will see this couple again.

Ok, I want tomorrow's

Ok, I want tomorrow's chapter now...

What a great story

Like everyone else, I can see both sides in this story.  It just keeps getting better and better!

I wish this was a full length book read so I could read tomorrow's chapter right now.

Now she's being a pinhead.

Now she's being a pinhead.  Why can't she accept that Paul might have some influence on her brother when she has none? Sigh.  Humans are sooo difficult.

Boy do I feel for Paul, you know how to wring the emotion out of us Cindi!

Really enjoying this,

Cindi!  I'm interested in seeing what happens next, and what goes on in the future with Rita and Paul.  Great job!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

Thank you!

Thank you everyone, for your comments. I hadn't imagined how hard it would be to resist giving away what happens next here. All I can say is that Paul and Rita's story continues in A Soldier Comes Home.

Rita's being soo

Rita's being soo irritating.  I know from her persepctive she's doing the right thing, but…why can't they agree to disagree?

I really like this guy.  I

I really like this guy.  I understand Rita' s position though.

I understand Rita but

I understand Rita but she isn't thinking at all about her feelings for Paul only focusing on getting out of there.  Given that this starts in 2002 I think that we will not see a HEA at the end of this read.

I agree that we will

not have the HEA in this online read.  Since we see them again in the June book I am sure we will not get what we all want in this read.  I am looking forward to reading the book so I can find out what is happening to them.

Elaine

Doesn't say anywhere that

Doesn't say anywhere that this story is a prequel, so I believe there will be a HEA.  We still have 14 more chapters to go.  I think we are going to jump ahead to 2008 within the next couple of chapters.

Why did she leave?

She came to hear his speech and then left.  I think that the things he said had an effect on her and she didn't know how to handle that.

Quite frankly, right now I am not "impressed" with Rita.  I prefer Paul.  He is upfront.  It seems that she is "hiding" things.  She is not letting him know why she feels certain things, etc...  She is also not honest to herself as to how she truly feels about Paul.

It will be interesting to see how things pans out.  I am still on the fence as to whether or not we'll see a HEA at the end of this online or if we need to read the book to see what happens.

She left because I don' t

She left because I don' t think she liked what she heard.  It negates her feelings that nothing can be done and that she needs to get out of the rez to better herself. It shows her up as being self-centered.  She's giving up on her family and her community.

Paul is thinking about his people, his community, and how he and others can make it better.  Rita is thinking about herself.  I feel for Paul.  I also really admire him.

I love this guy, but I don't

I love this guy, but I don't think Rita is being self-centered. It takes a special kind of person to look at misery and see rays of hope. That's why not everyone becomes a social worker. you have two choices when the boat seems to be sinking: try to save the others, and risk going down yourself; or try to save yourself. Not everyone is hero material and that doesn't make them selfish or self-centered. That doesn't mean you should step on others to save your self, but Rita isn't doing that. Maybe she isn't strong enough to affront the disappointments of life on the Rez. You can't save other people if you are drowning yourself.

You're right FF, not

You're right FF, not everyone can be a social worker and it is important to take care of yourself first.   I guess I feel she is self centered because she's giving up on her family and friends and I could never do that.  I have to remind myself that everyone is different.  I'm not a social worker, I'm a scientist, but I still volunteer numerous hours with disadvantaged youth.  So I guess I'm just projecting my values and find her lacking which is something I shouldn't be doing!Embarassed

Lidia, read the excerpt from A Soldier Comes Home.  It's interesting.  Makes me want to go buy the book, but it's not out on the shelves yet Frown Ah well, patience is a virtue, right Wink

Isn't Rita

in her late teens/early 20's?  How many of us were mature enough to know what we wanted for ourselves, much less being interested in doing for others?  I would say MOST of us weren't.

And as young adults, don't most of us want to experience life away from what we've always known, especially if what we've known isn't that great?  I don't feel Rita is immature, rather that Paul is mature beyond his years.  I can't wait to see how she grows into the woman Paul deserves!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

That was probably the wrong thing to do

She just built him up by going there then knocked him down when she left. She probably shouldn't have gone in the first place.

I agree that Paul is

mature beyond his years.  Rita is not.  I think that after hearing Paul's speech, it probably really gave her something to think about, and that is why she left.  She is one mixed up lady.  She wants Paul but doesn't want to stay on the Rez.  Will it take another woman to wake her up?  Apparently there are others that would love to take her place.Embarassed

Papaya, I hope you didn't

Papaya, I hope you didn't take my comments as a criticism of your point of view.  I was giving my opinion.  You are fully entitled to your own. No extra cost!Wink

Nope FF, didn't even take your comment as criticism, but just your opinion.  It made me think more about my position, which just shows me that I have an open mindInnocent EmbarassedInnocent I like this icon too!  Wish they could have incorporated the old icons with these new ones though!

I miss the martini glass icon!

Whenever I congratulated someone I would use it -- since there was no champagne glass.  Now they took the martini glass away also.  I guess that they don't want us "drinking" on the boards.  LOL

I am glad that this is a daily -- otherwise I would get very frustrated with Rita's actions.

LidiaFrown

YAY Rita! Of course we are

YAY Rita! Of course we are only on Chapter 8 and so much could happen, but I'm glad to see her start to think about her choices.   She may still decide she needs to leave the rez to survive, but I hope she helps out somehow.  Even just giving motivational talks on how she manages to survive without the drugs and drinking would be a good thing.  She is strong to have chosen to better herself than to sink like Reuben is.  I've seen that so much in families where kids and parents make bad choices, yet there may be one family member who wants to pull themselves out of the situation.  A lot of times that is where the Pauls of the world are a real help.

Can't wait for tomorrow's chapterSmile

I think she

bought a clue.

And I bet Paul did something to keep her car from starting so she couldn't leave until he was finished...  *ggg*

The most used phrase IS

'got' a clue, but when it takes someone else to help them 'get' it (in this case, her brother by his thoughts being the same as hers), I change it to 'bought', 'cause they got it somewhere else....  Tongue out

I never said I was normal....  *gggg*

Hugs,

At the end of the day, it's night.

I agree, April!

I think she definitely "bought" a clue from Paul during his wonderful speech.  Too bad that Ruben didn't really get anything out of it.

Oh oh, wrong reason...

Oh oh, wrong reason...  but I guess I understand her need to seek comfort.   Will they or won't they, wish I could read aheadEmbarassed

It always amazes me how special kids can rise above their upbringing and make something of themselves.  I realize this is fiction, but I've seen it happen in my own community.

I wonder if Paul is going to help out with trying to get Reuben turned around.

I hope they don't get

I hope they don't get pregnant… if they do do what they seem to intend to do.Wink

The solider story

Well today is the first time that I found a book to read online like this  and then beable to comment on it, i read i mean i read anything with words on it and I think that so far this is going to be a pretty good little book.  Just a little slow or maybe I just what to read to fast...

Bookworm

OH NO

i really hope she doesnt she really wants to get away from the reservation and if she gets that way she want get to leave...

Bookworm

so she'll get pregnant and

so she'll get pregnant and she'll find out after he leaves, won't bother to tell him and then we'll jump forward in the story to present time when he comes back and finds out???

I agree with you, bearsfan

I think that she is going to end up pregnant, he will go back to the service before either of them knows, and he probably won't know about the baby before present day.

I ordered a Soldier Comes Home, but won't read it until this online read is finished.

I really wish that this was a full length book so that I could read ahead.

I guess

I can understand where both of them are coming from on their thoughts about the reservation.  I hate to think that their different opinions might be what drives them apart, though.  After this new chapter (Friday's), I'm afraid that's what's going to happen...  And since I didn't see any mention of protection, the baby scenario seems likely.

Now, to wait until Monday.  I SERIOUSLY hate waiting!!!!

Hugs,
April

At the end of the day, it's night.

No condom. Drat!  Now she

No condom. Drat!  Now she risks becoming another statistic on the Rez.

Nope!

No condom and she's probably not even on the pill...  I feel a baby coming.

After making love with that dreamboat, she is now panicking?  April, you are probably right.  This will drive them apart for a while because of her stubbornness, but love will find a way to win out!

Can't wait to read the next chapter on Monday!
