I'm thinking about a replacement plan. Change one thing for another, week by week, to gradually end up doing more things I want to do and less things I wish I didn't do. What do you think?
If you could change one thing per week about yourself, one thing you really would be prepared to change and keep changed and consider it a step for the better, what would you change this week, right now?
I've developed the habit of eating caramel slice, and far too much of it. The ingredient list reads like a who's who of sugars and fats and preservatives, it's expensive, has no nutritional value, and frankly there are a lot nicer things out there if I want to indulge.
This week, right now, as of today, I'm changing my caramel slice habit for carob chocolate. I'm not giving up ordinary chocolate. I'm not saying I'll never eat caramel slice again. I will eat it occasionally. I'm not suddenly turning into a total health nut (though I could use plenty of improvement in that direction, I know). I'm just changing my pointless, expensive, doesn't-taste-that-nice caramel slice HABIT for carob chocolate.
That's it for me. What about you?

If I could change one thing, huh? I'd get more exercise. Yep. Exercise.

Exercise
I've been thinking about exercise. I'm not ready yet to commit to making a change there, maybe because I've gone back on my word about it so many times in the past. I only want to make changes I stick to this time, so I'm working up to committing to walking on the treadmill on Wed, Thurs and Sun mornings, as those are the ones I'd find it easiest to do it
.
Fakefrenchie, yes that's the recipe except the bought stuff doesn't look (and no doubt taste) as nice as that and has preservative in it.

Getting more sleep
The one thing I would like to change is getting more sleep and going to bed earlier. And let me tell you, the Harlequin short romances I have been reading (not blogged yet) are not helping one little bit! I tell myself I will just start one so I can have something to look forward to the next day while I work....soon it is 4am. I think one thing I need to do is not let my dh distract me. I like long periods of concentration, solid uninterrupted blocks of time, while I read whereas my dh likes to flitter around, one task here, another there and he can be a major distraction in the early evening. I pick short thinking somehow the length will help me but I don't think it matters really. I need to find a good book to help me fall asleep at night.

One new thing
Oh dear. Where to begin.
I suspect the one thing I should change is the habit of going to my emails with my first cup of tea instead of going straight to the book. Somewhere, over the last couple of years, I've become an internet junkie and it's providing a perfect distraction from the absolutely focus that writing requires.
Every night I tell myself that tomorrow I'll go straight to the hut at the bottom of the garden and work until breakfast. No emails until lunch.
Every morning I fall from the straight and narrow. But if only I had a little willpower, that's the thing I'd change.

Sorry Liz - the only cure for that is to disconnect the internet
from the computer you write on or (if you can afford to do this)
have one computer for writing and the other for surfing, and not
"allow" yourself to turn on the surfing computer until after the early
evening news (that was my mother's rule for television when we were
young, with one exception - Wimbledon) or until you've finished writing
for the day.
Or set a timer for the emails, because let's face
it, if you get nice reviews and congratulatory emails that will fill
you with enthusiasm for your writing, it's a nice way to start the day!

This is a hard
This is a hard one as I've already cut my coffe and started to exercise more. I had a heart scare and woke up to the fact I'm not getting any younger. So I guess I need to exercise even more. I'd say cut the ice cream out but I love ice cream and hey I still need a few vices.

1 thing...hmmm
i would put myself at the top of the list instead of at the bottom...years of looking after everyone else has left little time for me...but i am not even sure how to manage that...working full time, family committments, still one left in the nest...any suggestions ladies?
oh, I envy those of you who can excercise, I can excercise but in two or three days, I have so much pain to deal with that it isn't worth it anymore
except for swimming. I can swim and excercise in water and I don't suffer the effects like land excercise! so maybe my goal should be to figure out how to find a place where I could excercise in water 2 or 3 x's a week. We live near a creek that we swim in during the summer, but it is still way too cold for that now...
ever searching...getting there one step at a time lulu
1 thing
I write every day, but I rarely meet my word count goals. I would like to write and meet my goals. I need to exercise too, but thats harder for me. I am dieting and I have lost 20 lbs so I have changed a little bit.

Changing one (small) thing at a time
Changing one small thing at a time is how I'm hoping to get gradually to a better place. I want to try to change one small thing per week for a year on a 'replacement' basis, since the feeling that I'm 'giving things up' is off-putting.
It's hard to do the big stuff, isn't it? I think that's why I've fallen off the wagon so often with an established exercise routine. I don't particularly enjoy the process of exercising and I work long hours one way and another. Trying to juggle it all - exercise is one of the first things I give up on. Still thinking on how to fix that one...
Liz, I hear you on the Internet habit! Using Google Reader with all my favourite blogs and some of these eHarl threads listed in it has helped me a lot with that because I can see them all there at once, at a glance, and whether there are any new posts. I can look at subject headers and decide what I want to read. I think I'll probably always start my day with Internet time but if I keep it to 10 minutes or so and leave answering the emails I've read for the end of the day, I'm fairly happy.
(((Merri))) on needing more sleep and (((teachlu7 ))) on needing exercise that doesn't hurt the body. And taking time for yourself - that is so important and can be so hard to do!
I suspect next week's replacement change is going to be replace one boring dinner dish per week with something more interesting and make that something fish-based at least once a fortnight.
How much change do you think you'd realistically make in a year, if you replaced one small thing with something else? Do you think you'd stick to making that one change per week for the year? And do you think it would kick off other changes you didn't add to your list? I'm wondering, because since I've made this decision I've felt as though I've had a change in mindset overall?

Girls, if I were to fix
Girls, if I were to fix everything one week at a time....hmmmmm....I'd probably be done in about 50 years! LOL!
For those of you who are serious about making some type of change, I would like to offer some advice.
It takes 21 days to break a habit. For example, if you eat a bowl of Edy's Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream every night before bed, you will have to NOT do that for 21 days.
I have tried this and it is true! Make a log sheet for whatever goal you set. Tape it to the inside of your medicine cabinet or magnet it to the outside of your refrigerator. Every day you succeed, mark the day off the sheet before bed. If your sheet is in one of those 2 places, you are most likely to see it first thing each morning and later before bed.
I need to go back on a 21 day plan for housework!

Cat, I've heard this, and that it takes 21 days to form a good habit. At least if I'm replacing things I can kid myself I'm not just missing out on something, I'm replacing it with something else. I think that might help with getting through the 21 days. I hope so anyway.
FakeFrenchie, I'm guessing there are sandwiches in Philadelphia called heroes. The mind boggles. What are they like? Is it a type of sandwich or a place they are purchased?

Ok Jennie- A hero is also
Ok Jennie- A hero is also called a sub, or a grinder depending upon where you live, but it's still a sandwich. Generally starts with italian or french bread or something similar ( like the Subway sandwich chain makes their own 12 inch bread loaves) the bread can be a 24 inch loaf too and cut into two 12's
Then some condiment is spread, could be butter, mayo mustard etc followed by meats, cheese and greens, tomatoes, oil and vinegar, peppers etc could be changed any way you like it, each region has it's own version depending on what is easily available. I've eaten a lot of tuna heroes, meat ball subs etc.
a New Orleans po'boy when done on a long loaf of bread is a version of a hero. So is a big phillie cheese steak anything can be a hero. New England I think calls them grinders and some others call them submarine sandwiches for long.
On the subject of exercise
aches and pains come the second day after exercise when you haven't done any for a while, so it you don't want aches and pains you need to build up gradually but do it every day for the first couple of weeks and of course that takes planning - bears out that habit-forming thing as well
Good luck

I already...
I already started. I started cutting back on my coke consumption, to one a day. Well, one 12 ounce can a day. I had to narrow it down to one 12 ounce can, rather than one 2 liter bottle.
If I am in a restaurant, it is one glass. If it is a fast food place then it is the smallest cup.
By the end of the year, I want to cut out all soft drinks completely. I have heard it said that you could loose a lot of weight just by cutting back by 100 callories a day. That just about equals a can of Coke (or any soft drink).
Mostly I try to drink the Coke in the morning, for the caffine ( cant stand the taste of coffe). Then I drink a non cafiene soda like Sprite or Squirt. Or I drin Ice'd tea. Eventually I want to just do water.

Subs and Grinders
Thanks Barbara (feels funny calling you that instead of your bat cave name - hee). We have the Subway stores here, so now I now what you mean. Some of their breads are SO nice. Calling them Grinders sounds weird. We call things funny names, don't we?
Terri - a 2 liter bottle in a day? I don't feel as guilty now about my Pepsi Max consumption. Hee. I'm down to half a can weekdays, more on weekends. Don't see myself giving it up completely but I'm hoping cutting back will help, even if it means tossing some of it out. And I'm on 6 glasses of water a day. Now that really does make you feel better.
I tried the carob buds last night. They don't have any bitter component so they taste a lot sweeter than chocolate. But they were just as appealing as store boought caramel slice, and the bonus is I won't be able to eat the same number of calories worth of the carob buds in the same amount of time. So far so good!

smaller cans
Smaller cans of Pepsi Max are made in Australia but I haven't spotted them in any of the supermarkets in my town so far, only at places that cater food. I suspect they might not be very good value to buy, but I'll keep looking for them as they would be ideal for me these days and stop the temptation of drinking the other half of the larger can. After five days of having less caffiene I have a nasty headache today. Not sure if it's caffiene withdrawal or something else. I will persevere!

caffeine withdrawal
Good morning, all....caffeine withdrawal is painful! aspirin works well to help you through it because it has caffeine in it...what have you replaced it with? something healthy, I hope...green tea is good.
when I went to a nutritionist to learn how to handle the fibro she put me on a pretty strict diet where I literally felt the fat melt off...nothing white (potatoes, rice, bread). Replace with sweet potatoes, brown rice, whole grains, No sugar, except in my coffee in the am (1 cup per day), three meals a day with a snack of fruit and nuts (about 5) in between meals and before bed...lots of water (which cleans the system)...lean meats, and more than I had ever consumed...organic when able. No sugar, controlled good fats, OH and one treat a week on Sat or Sunday of any thing I chose but after cleaning your system, you really don't want the sugar. It makes you feel awful after eating it... no soda or juice (unless I wanted to squeeze it myself...mostly processed sugar...
I was never really hungry because the fruit and nuts regulates your sugar...no crashes, lots of energy all day long...problem was no one else in fam was willing ot do the same and being human, I fell into grabbing the junk again when in a hurry but I managed it for six months and flet better than in a long time...actually went down to a size eight (lean and mean
) it does work.
Remember: Sugar is addictive! even a little will lead back to wanting more, and more, and more. Same with soda
ever searching...getting there one step at a time lulu
most asprin
is just asprin....things like Excedrin and Anicin I believe have cafiene, but I just use generic stuff i get at the 99 cent store. Its just asprin.

If I could change one thing...
Jennie, what a fab thread!
my biggest/hardest change to date:
March 4, 2008 my girls and I were hit by a drunk driver head on who was on the wrong side of a divided highway. Afterwards I was TERRIFIED to drive. TERRIFIED to sit in anything smaller than a minivan and TERRIFIED to drive with my little girls. So, each week, I focused on one. Extremely hard! But I did it and though I'm still dealing with the fear, I feel proud that I'm finally swapping fear for freedom!
I'd love to say I'm changing couch sitting with excersise, but still too sore plus being 8mths VERY preggers, I'm gonna let that one slide.
Awesome idea to change the caramel slice with carob! Hope that's going well. Hmmmm. A change in my diet... that's got me thinking!

Week #2 - fish
Nindespin, I know what you mean. I've been run into at high speed and it is very hard to get back behind the wheel. It gets easier over time though you'll probably still find yourself jumping for no reason now and then for a while when you're driving. I had four children in the car with me when we were hit. Two of mine and two of my best friend's. Her littlest one was going on three and when the car stopped moving she sat there covered in a shower of broken window glass and said 'Aunty Jennie... We bumped!'
I haven't missed the caramel slice and I'm certainly eating a lot less carob that I had been caramel slice so I think I have a win with that one.
My week #2 replacement is to replace one meal of the week with a healthy fish meal. I found some frozen fish in individual wrapping that's easy to cook, only takes about eight minutes and it tasted nice. Did that for the first time tonight and next week might be more of a test with it because I'll be home on my own - sometimes in that case I'm tempted to be really slack about the cooking!
I'm thinking I really want to take this through 52 weeks. A year of replacing one thing with a better thing once a week. I think it could make a really big difference. Now I have to work out what the week #3 goal should be.
