Yes, you heard me. My dad and my sister both can read a book in one day. I find that insane! I just can't do that. It's not that I could, because I certainly couldn't! Time is not the issue here, it's just that I've never been a fast reader. My husband is sssslllloooowwww to read and I find I lose patience with him when he's reading something that came in the mail or reading an e-mail. I tend to want to just read things to him rather than have him read them and then me read afterwards.
I feel that I suffer greatly because I can't read 100 books in a month. I'm lucky if I can read five in a month! I would average one a week if I all worked in my favor. Being a working mom, I can't fit everything in my day that I want to.
Don't get me wrong - I'm not complaining. I enjoy reading as it's relaxing to me and I can escape to another place and learn about the characters and their stories. I love to read!

No wrong way
Kristen, I don't think there's any right speed to reading a book as long as you enjoy it.

Yeah, Kristen. Listen to Jayne. We can't all be like Sadhbh. Think of the trees!

March's Member of the Month!
this is not....
this is not a competition....
I sometimes joke that I feel inadiquite to some of the others. But I am happy with the 54 books i have read in the the past 5 months.
One reader said she reads 2.5 books aday....I am lucky if i read one book in 2.5. days.
The point of this group is to read and have fun. Dont be so hard on yourself.

Got Books?
What's most important, Kristen...
...is that you can comprehend what you read, and that you even like to read at all! Consider the oodles of people who don't ever pick up a book. Poor things. We who read are lucky indeed!
BTW, I love your poem about the mother. I make it a point to read to my daughter every night before she goes to bed. And I was lucky to have one who read to me, too.

agree
I don't think of this as a competion(other than with myself). The main goal is to find enjoyment from the books and have fun

Thanks for your comments,
Thanks for your comments, everyone! I appreciate you reading my blog post.
I know my reading speed is nothing to be ashamed of or to worry about. I've actually been trying to read more and more (meaning, spending more time at it) than doing other things like watching t.v. I'm in a book discussion group which had me reading non-fiction books and I felt this huge pull after a few months for a romance novel! LOL So that's where I am, back to my TBR shelf and I just grabbed one, willy nilly, the other day and am loving it so far!

Reading Speeds
If I could only by like Sadhbh I might get through my TBR in this lifetime, but I'm not. I'd like to emulate Debiw781, because then I might get through half the pile in my lifetime, but that's not going to happen either.
Instead, I have to be happy with the reading speed I have. For me reading speed depends on the length of the book, and how much I enjoy it. A boring book could take as long as two weeks because I'll even clean the house rather than read, but a highly entertaining book might not even take 2 days because I'll ignore everything but blood or other gore...and fortunately my kids are old enough now that I don't have to deal with those too often, and should it happen they'd rather deal with it themselves because they know mom is squeamish and bound to ask a zillion questions as to how and why!

I agree with everyone!
I read for the enjoyment, for the wonderful new things I learn, and for the new and exciting places I can visit via books. And it's a big plus to be on this great site with so many fantastic new friends!

I would just like to remind everyone that I too read just for
my own enjoyment and for the pleasure of discussing books with the rest of you. I don't feel I'm in competition even with myself, I just want to get on to the next unforgettable book and that's enough motivation to keep me going.
There are books that I linger over and reread because of everything I get from each rereading and yes I blog about those often enough for y'all to be able to write out the list
I have been known to tease the rest of you about "catching up" with me but I think I have also said fairly often that the important part of this Challenge is to enjoy the books, enjoy the discussion and enjoy the idea that more people will have access to books they love because of our shared enjoyment and love of reading.
I would be only too delighted if someone or two or three hundred people did outread me this year
but you can't expect me to "throw" the "competition" by slowing down
, now can you?
I would hate to think I was depressing, intimidating or discouraging anyone from reading just because they can't read as fast as I can - you know I still maintain I don't read that fast, I still haven't learned to speed read
- I keep trying but I get caught up in the books and forget and slow down to my "normal" speed

To speed read or not to speed read - that is the question...
Sadhbh, I agree that speed reading would just have to take something out of the pleasure of reading. It might be like gobbling chocolate so fast you can't even taste it, let alone savor it! Who really wants to do THAT? LOL. Speaking of which, that's a lovely combination - reading and nibbling chocolates! H'm... think I'll go read now after a quick stop by my hidden stash of Lindt truffles....

Okay, now somebody needs to take my truffles away from me! I've gained a pound over Mother's Day weekend! EEEK!
