So I'm sitting here at my desk and thinking to myself HOW am I going to galvanize the Community into going that extra mile and hitting our numbers this month? And I took down my handy dandy calculator (yup, be AFRAID folks) and I said to myself....hmmmm, let's see now. I know we have 2,601 Community members as of Monday (Thank you, Scott) and I know we have to read and review 100,000 Books.
So I took the 100,000 books and divided that by the number of available hands we have on-deck and guess what I came up with?
38.446751 Books
So I called over to the Analysis Team, who happily work in the next stash of cubicles over to verify this result. "Josh!" I asked, "If you take 100,000 and divide that by 2,601 does that make 38.446751?" (I'm an Arts Major and if it's one thing I've learned it's to go to the experts). Josh said "Yup!" and so there you have it folks....
If all of our registered 2,601 Community members read and review 38.446751 books EACH (I'm thinking that last bit is a novella, don't you?) then we'll hit our target of 100,000 books easy-peasy...heck I've already got 24 books under my belt...and this is for SUCH a good cause, so really this is TOTALLY doable!
Right? That also means that if we recruit more Community members to read and review their books that number will go down, right?

While the rest of us fall short....
Sadly, I've contributed only 5 reviews, though I do have more books to review for. And I will certainly try my best to gun the pedal. I confess, it's hard for me to read and write all at the same time. So, just between us, can I cheat a little bit? If I can't read all 38/39 books, can I share Sadhbh's contribution? She more than makes up for so many of us!

Heck if it's reasonable, I'll even pick up the printing costs just to get them out there. It's the same flier that Lorie took to RT and Wayne took with him to Slam Jam and the one that I'll be taking to RWA this year. I'm hitting the campaign trail myself to

Reading Goals
With Sadhbh and Janet reading enough for 100 people each, we can all read less LOL. Just kidding. I've read 46 books so far and my plan is to keep reading at this pace the rest of the year.
I do see a lot of people who post in the forums, but haven't read one book yet. We ALL need to read and post for this wonderful challenge.

There are still a few more books that I have sitting around waiting to be blogged. I'll be sure to get them in before this month is over.
Sadhbh, I'm gonna need you to pick up my slack this month. LOL I'm slow getting my books read this year. I'll aim for twenty this month, including my back log.

I have an article on the Challenge in the Simply Books magazine that accompanies the subscription books, and I have a bookmark planned for future shipments. Yenastone, no promises, but
Yenastone, no promises, but yeah... I'm going to give it a try! I could tell that I was going to easily peasily hit 500, that if I kept up reading at this rate, 100 books a month, even if i was only in the challenge for 9 months (since I joined late) I could try to hit 900 if I kept up! It will be fun and quite a challenge to hit 1000 books. I feel like I might go insane though, keeping up this rate of reading.
well I've been reading, but
well I've been reading, but during tax season I haven't time to blog or review. Lately I haven't had many new books to me. So I've been rereading old ones from my library stash at home
Unfortunately i don't remember what books I read and reviewed in the prior challenge so I haven't posted any. my at home library stash numbers in the hundreds, maybe a thousand. There are books in boxes I can't even reach and have no idea what they are. So I guess I'll try to blog some of them.
38 books sounds very reachable.
Reading only 38 books for a whole year doesn't sound bad. Put that way it makes it very reasonable to reach the goal. But again every book counts and like everyone knows Sadhbh is making up for any low numbers from some of us. And I always thought I read a lot also.

I've stopped hyperventilating!
Once I did the maths, I was able to relax knowing that 38 books was well within reason for our average avid reader. The trick is in getting everyone that IS a registered Community member to read and review their 38 books, that and also growing our membership. I'm hoping our new Facebook page will help draw in some new folks to help us with that.
I recognize that sitting at 24 books, I still have some reading ahead of me, but it also doesn't mean that I"m going to let up any once I hit my target of 38 books. I think I read over 65 books last year, and I'm shooting for a personal record.

Well Jayne if we could stop after we reached the 39 books, I
could have stopped a long time ago, given that I'm reading the 9*38.446751 th book at the moment
Interestingly enough I have to read another 17.01*38.446751 to make it to four figures, without the .01 I'm stuck at 999.62*** books
Well you do seem to like playing with numbers

Decimal points versus commas
When I read the article on how many books we needed to read I did not have on my reading glasses. I thought the decimal point was a comma. I had to swallow the lump in my throat and take a deep breath. I looked at all the books piled around me and the ones boxed up in my spare room. All of them in my TBR pile. It was a difficult task you but I was ready.
Then I read some of the comments, put on my reading glasses, and reread the article.
Whew!
I've already surpassed the 38.whatever and plan to add many, many more.
I have already recruited another member and I spoke about the challenge to my group of 30. I will now post Jayne's release on out loop.
I know we will reach the goal, long before December 31.
w-w-w
Numbers!
If everyone in the Challenge reads only 3.25 books a month that will equal 39 for each person for the year! Three or four books a month seems like a very doable total for anyone even a slow reader or someone that has very little time to read.
I will do my best to sign up someone new. Most of the people I know do not read H/S books! Darn!! They just don't know what they are missing.
Since I'm already at over 50 books I could quit but of course I won't! Even if I can manage to read just one more book than I read last year I would be happy!!
Good luck everyone, go read!!
By the way, to all the Mom's have a very Happy Mother's Day.
Jayne, I hope to meet you in San Francisco. I'm coming for the book signing.
Take care, happy reading,

I'm over 50 - yay!!!
Thank you, Jayne! I've been watching the numbers and I saw the goal of 18,000 books by end of May. Then today I saw it had changed to 15,000 books by the end of May and my heart sunk. I thought you all thought it was too much for us.
But 38 books! I'm over 50 already. Woo hoo! You made my day! And it's only April. I seem to be avg'g 15 books a month, so I'm doing okay!
I'm so glad you posted the link for the press release. I saw it used on another blog but can't remember whose it was at the moment, but I remember thinking I'd love to do that on mine. You must have ESP

I don't think we should get
I don't think we should get comfortable.... when you think of the user activity at any forum... Probably 50% of the members are inactive and haven't visited lately. Just as many members might not have ever made a post at the eHarlequin forums.
I hope that the 2000 members mentioned are active ones. Also think of any survey you send out... you never get 100% of the people to respond once, and having people remember to come back 38 times and aim for that many reviews... its tough!
People are most likely to help out if they've got constant reminders of the challenge, inviting them personally to participate (i.e. via emails) or if they know friends who are doing the challenge with them (so they can get a little friendly competition going and motivate each other).
I know... I'm such a Debbie Downer eh??? But I'm just thinking realistically, I hope that the people we do grab and get involved in this challenge are real motivated and slay their TBR piles.
Fake Frenchie....
After thinking and puzzling until my noggin's sore, I just can't stand it anymore! My curiousity is getting the best of me! I just have to ask

Oh PLEASE Amanda - don't encourage her
She started calling me that back in 2006 when I used to "gently encourage" other members of the then 100 book challenge (remember how you thought you "might" get about a dozen takers Jayne
) to read and post their reviews. I think it was specifically encouraging the people from the Lunasylum that prompted FF to give me that name - for what seemed to her to be obvious reasons
She might have a different recollection, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it

Are all the book reviews being counted? Are some getting placed in the blog and not tripping the counter. I could swear that there are many more reviews written than are being counted.
I've gone over the 39 mark (well, even passed 100 books read).
Can I count myself amongst the cool group?
BTW, I pass on my books to someone at work, so, I have asked her to consider getting involved. She passes my books on to someone she knows from her 2nd job and she will be asking them.
