Stormy, but Productive Day

We're having one heck of a coastal storm. The window panes rattled so hard last night, it made it tough to sleep. The wind is still blowing--hard. The rain started this morning and has yet to stop.

The planters and patio furniture are strewn willy-nilly around my backyard. About an hour ago, the rain gutter on the back of the house came down, well, half way down. It's pretty mangled. Steve's going to be trhilled to see that when he gets home from work.

The phone just rang. I screened as usual. It was a public warning for our little island. Coastal flooding forthcoming. Move all vehicles to higher ground. Uh, oh. I pulled on a slicker and hurried outside to make sure my car was in the slightly elevated driveway and not the street where it had gotten flooded two years prior. It was. Thank you, Steve!

Currently, I'm sitting on the sofa typing away at the deadline book. My two dogs, who hate storms, are curled on either side of me. Wind blowing. Rain pouring. If nothing else, it's a great writing day.

What's going on in your neck of the woods?

No clouds in the sky.

Beth- I would love a little bit of your rain. Once in a while we get some clouds in New Mexico but usually just end up with hot dry wind. Hopefully the monsoon season will start soon. It is so dry here the Lincoln National Forest  is closed to camping because of the fire risk.

Stay safe and dry. At least it sounds like you have good company!

We are having a fairly dry

We are having a fairly dry spring--not such a good thing for our farmers.

Nancy

Angel...

I've been to Arizona a few times. I know about the monsoons there but have never experienced one. I assume they are similar in New Mexico? Intense rains that can cause flash flooding in the blink of an eye? That's scary stuff. During the season, do you get one daily? Is it always around the same time? Or random? I've always been fasinated by the weather. Foot in mouth

Farmers...

bring to mind my native state of Indiana. I'm envisioning fields of corn, soybeans, tomatoes... but mostly those lovely cornfields. I'm guessing you're somewhere in the midwest, Nancy? Wishing you nurishing but not torrential rains.

A coastal storm?

Wow, Beth, I'm glad I'm where I am! LOL

I blogged with someone else here on eharlequin only yesterday about the weather.  From all the accounts I've heard, it's as if a patchwork quilt is covering the country - different conditions in every region.

It's a coincidence, but I actually live in Indiana, so, as you know, our climate is very unpredictable.  We usually have fairly warm Mays, but this one has been rather chilly.  Although it's beautiful and in the sixties today, we've had a lot of chilly, rainy days.  In fact only yesterday morning, I was jarred from bed at 7:00 by a gusty storm that literally shook the whole upstairs of my house!  Since we've had so many tornadoes countrywide, I tuned into the local station, prepared to dive for cover!  Fortunately, the storm was over nearly as fast as it began, leaving no damage, except lots of leaves and a few limbs scattered to give my husband some extra yardwork!

As you mentioned, these are the kind of days that are perfect for reading or writing.  I usually choose a light and funny novel or attempt to write a lighthearted scene, to combat nasty weather.  After all, there's nothing like humor to cast the sunshine on an otherwise dismal day, don't you agree? Don't you love Beth's blogs?

I am headed off to my two hour job as lunch lady. (Said proudly now that I know Donna Alward has done the same in the past.)

I will put on my sunscreen for the hour I stand outside watching the kids on the playground and dream of rain.

Beth- Yes, our monsoons are like Arizona. My dad lived between Williams and the canyon and I have experienced the floods there.

Amanda- Hi! Sorry I have to run. I hope the wind stays away until after you clean up!

For my fellow Hoosier

Amanda,

I didn't realize you were in Indiana. How about that?! Laughing I haven't lived there in 20 years, but I grew up there and I go back now and then to visit my mom and sisters (though not as often as I'd like).

The last time I visited in the summer,I spent an evening hunkered in the hallway of my mom's house with one sister, two neices, and a dog, praying the tornadoes touching down in the nearby town would pass us by. My mom refused to hunker with us. She just kept watching the news and peeking out the door. (I guess she's jaded by living through so many tornado warnings)

My sister lived next door and that house has an old root celler (safer than a hallway) but my sister said it was full of big spiders!! Surprised We decided we'd rather brave the tornado. Luckily we didn't have to. It touched down two towns over but skipped us.

Sending you warm thoughts and praying the season's whirlwinds pass you by as well.

Small town girl....

Wow, Beth, your mom sounds like one tough cracker!  A lot of country women are like that, I've noticed.  They're strong and enduring, able to face things that make me want to go bury my head somewhere.  So, don't feel bad about making sure you were safe in the cellar - I would've been right there with you.  Trust me. Wink

As you can probably tell by that little confession, I'm not a farmgirl, although my husband is a down-home farmboy.  As a little girl, my family once owned horses out in Brown County, but nothing any more farm-like than that.  Can't tell you how many times I burned my forehead on the electric fence while attempting to feed the horses carrots and apples!  Ouch!  I'm sure a bonefide farmgirl would've been able to avoid that - LOL.

Until two years ago, we lived near Trafalger, IN - a small very rural area.  It's extremely low-lying flat terrain, and I think tornadoes use it as a breeding ground to make little baby funnel clouds.  They touched down pretty regularly, but we were lucky not to experience a lot of damage while we lived there - aside from crumbled gutterings and torn-off siding.  We now live back in my small town about ten miles from Trafalger - not a big move, I know, but it's amazing how that ten miles can make a heck of a difference.  So far, knock on wood, we've not had tornadoes here.

Hi, Angel!  On the countdown still, right?  Is it three or four days now till your DH is home?  You brave girl, taking on lunch duty like that.  I almost think I'd rather brave the tornado - just kidding!  Innocent  As you know already, I love kids!

Amanda

My hubby comes home Friday night!

I love kids but not enough to be a substitute teacher all day. As lunch lady I can be the nice guy.

After 8 years in Missouri I don't miss the tornado warnings or the ice storms.

Amanda...

You're making me homesick. Tornado talk and all! Though I've been a Jersey girl for twenty years now, I'm still a country girl at heart. Indiana is a beautiful state and the home to many warm-hearted, down-to-earth people like you--farmgirl or no. Wink

I'm not in the midwest--I'm

I'm not in the midwest--I'm in NY and we are having a dry spring. We have lots of nearby orchards and diary farms--hard to grow feed corn when there is no rain.

Nancy

Ah, New York State

Your neck of the woods sounds lovely, Nancy. Here's hoping you get the rain you need soon.
