Weekly Online Read: The Last Stand by Brenda Novak

The Last Stand by Brenda Novak (MIRA, June 08). Brenda Novak wrote a prequel to her new MIRA trilogy for another website and has allowed us to put it up on ours.

It’s 3 a.m. when the phone wakes Skye Kellerman. She answers it, but all she can hear is a frightened whisper: “He’s here…”

Skye recognizes the voice as Dahlia Studebaker, a young woman she met in her victim support group. Dahlia is being terrorized by a stalker—and Skye knows his attacks have been escalating. Has he broken into Dahlia’s house? Is he trying to kill her?

A victim of violence herself, Skye knows the sound of true fear and
rushes to her friend. But as the night deepens, Skye’s own fear
mounts…. Can Dahlia be trusted? Is there any hope that she can save the
other woman—or herself?

Please note: this story will not be going into the ORL and it is only 6
chapters.

The story introduces the three heroines of Brenda Novak’s latest miniseries and
the charity that they created to help victims of violence.

I was waiting for this

I was waiting for this series ever since she said she was going to do this series. I am reading the first book in this series right now.

The Last Stand

Hi everyone--

Thanks so much for the nice comments. I've had a lot of fun writing this new series. It's set in my hometown, so I'm sort of freaking myself out placing each new villain in a setting I'm so familiar with--LOL--but it's fun to get the reaction of those who live in Sacramento with me (or who have visited here).

I've been trying to get a virtual tour of The Last Stand up on my web site, but I keep running into technical difficulties. Hopefully, we'll get them resolved, and it will go up soon.

Thanks for directing me to the right place, Lauren. And congrats on your recent sale! Whoo hoo!

That was an interesting chapter...

Wow! That was scary.

Wow! That was scary.   Made my blood run cold. I don't like suspense as a general rule so I don't think I'll be back, but the opening chapter was excellent.

Questions answered

It is so ironic that I am reading this right now. I just started reading Trust Me today, so it is good to get some of the backstory now. Now, some of my questions have been answered. Brenda Novak is a new author to me and I really love her style. She has a gift with words and creates such beautiful plots that it seems like you are a part of the story too. Kudos to Ms. Novak. I can't wait to read the next installment.

Peace and love!!

I just finished Trust Me

I just finished Trust Me this morning and I loved it.  I can't wait to read the others in this series along with reading the online story. Trust Me had me hooked from the beginning Smile

I ordered TRUST ME last week...

so I'm impatiently awaiting its arrival.  Brenda Novak is definitely one of my favourite authors and has been since I read her book Taking the Heat when it was released a few years ago.  Since then I've managed to get all of her books... and I'm not going to be stopping anytime soon.
She truly writes an amazing story!  And this intro will be great to have under my belt when I do read Trust Me.

Thanks!

Thanks for the kind comments about my work, ladies! I'm thrilled that you're enjoying TRUST ME. It really keep a writer going to hear such positive feedback--something I desperately need right now since I'm so behind on my current wip. LOL

By the way, I had some great news regarding this book just yesterday. My agent called to tell me that TRUST ME hit the NYTimes Bestseller List. Although it's always been my dream, this is my first time on the list, so I'm thrilled. Thanks to all those who purchased the book and helped make this happen!

 Brenda

How exciting!!

Don't forget the US Publisher's list as well, Madame Novak :P

Congratulations Brenda!!!

Congratulations Brenda!!!

Thanks....

....Dream and Tiffany. This has been a great month so far. :-)

Kalyka, I've hit the Borders/Waldenbooks Bestseller list a number of times, but this was my first time for the USA Today AND the NYTimes.

Glad the book sounds intriguing to you, Elaine. I really enjoyed writing it, but I think my favorite of the series is...so far...STOP ME. (And I'm not just saying that because it comes out on Tuesday! LOL)

Brenda

Cold Feet...

...was only my second big book, Lauren. Did you ever try TAKING THE HEAT? That was first.

Brenda

By the way...

...I've been meaning to mention my That's What Friends are For Contest. This is so fun! The grand prize is a Caribbean Cruise for two, and all you have to do to enter is write a short paragraph telling why the person you'd like to bring with you is an amazing friend. Every week, I pick a semi-finalist. At the end of the summer, when the contest ends, you'll be able to vote for the grand prize winner. So visit my web site and enter to win!

 Brenda

LOL Brenda, I've got them

LOL Brenda, I've got them all :) Taking the Heat was also pretty amazing. I don't know how your sweet mind comes up with such dark stuff, but I love it! :)

Stop Me is next Tuesday already? Wow! Heading into Calgary that day, for sure :)

Stop Me...

Yes, Lauren, STOP ME comes out this Tuesday. I can't believe it. I've never had books come out so close together. It's really exciting! LOL

Let me know if you find it. This one is actually my favorite of the new series. I think because it was such a challenge to write. The plot got pretty complex. LOL

Brenda

Wow, this is keeping me on

Wow, this is keeping me on edge.  Wish the next chapter was tomorrow!

Well, I couldn't resist.  I agree Papaya.  The story is keeping me on edge. Is she or isn't she credible? Only time will tell.

Found Trust Me and Stop Me

in the book store this weekend and bought both.  I am trying to decide if I want to read them now or wait until the next one comes out and read them all at one time.

It will be interesting to find out who is telling the truth in this story.

Elaine

But then, being that Brenda's writing it that's no surprise.
I know that she's always been able to keep me guessing, not that I'm all the good, or even interested most of the time, in figuring out whodunit... but I do love the suspense!

Lovin' this look into the series ~ I only my books arrive soon... very soon!

The Last Stand

Hi Brenda!  Love it!  Love it!  Love it!  You are m'avelous, d'aling, simply m'avelous!!  Congrats again on hitting the NYT list!!

 You da bomb!!

 Cher :-))

Suspenseful

Brenda, I love this online read...this week's chapter was great...I can't wait to see what happens next...I hope Skye isn't putting her faith in Dahlia too much and have it backfire...do we get to meet her "man" in this prequel? You don't have to answer that...I see that Stop Me should be out...the excerpt in the back of Trust Me was a great teaser...I must go book shopping now...

Question: Are you any relation to the legendary Kim Novak? I loved watching her when I was younger...It just popped into my head.

Peace and love,

The Prequal & Kim Novak

Hi Paula--

Unfortunately, I'm no relation to Kim Novak. I do think that her fame has made it easier for some to remember my name, so that helps. LOL

Glad you're enjoying the Prequal.I've only written two or three short stories in my life, so it was a fun challenge.

Brenda

Stop Me

Thanks for checking for STOP ME, Lauren. I just dropped by my local Barnes & Noble, and they didn't have any out yet, but I asked them to drag them out of the back, and they did. It's tough to sell books that aren't out. LOL

Cher, great to see you here, my friend. Thanks for all the kudos!

Brenda

Books

Hi Kalyko--

Hope your books arrive soon. I was surprised to find that Amazon was selling copies of STOP ME as early as 8-9 days ago. I'm not sure I understand the whole "on sale" date thing, because it certainly seems flexible. LOL

Brenda

Now or later...

Heck, go ahead and start them now, Elaine. WATCH ME will be out in four short weeks, so you definitely don't have long to wait. I love this back-to-back schedule. Fortunately, MIRA is publishing my next three books back-to-back, too! Hooray!

The end...

Hope you like the end as well as the beginning, Papaya and Fake Frenchie. :-)

I found a copy of Stop Me

Brenda, I am loving the online read.  I cannot wait until Harlequin has the e-books for your next two books.  I am anxious to see what is going to happen next.  I am really looking forward to reading Watch Me after reading the expert on your website.

Online Read

Hey, Lauren! I'm glad you found it. Thanks for picking it up.

Tiffany, I'm so glad you're enjoying the online read. I just got my author copies for WATCH ME today. It's the first time I've seen anything more than a picture of the cover, but it's even cooler than it looks. I really like it.

Harlequin sent me the most beautiful bouquet of flowers today for hitting the NYT. It was very exciting to open the door to such a gorgeous arrangement--one of those moments you always imagine when you have a dream to hit such a list.

I just saw my rating from RT for WATCH ME. It got 4.5 stars, like the other two in the series, so now I can let my breath go in relief and get on with the book I'm writing. LOL

 Brenda

Drawing me in

As a rule, I'm not much of a suspense/thriller fan either, but so far you have me on edge, Brenda!  GREAT JOB!

It will be interesting to see how this unravels.

Hooked as usual...

I'm very much enjoying this! And Brenda, what great news to hear the next series is also back to back. The worst part about reading your books is waiting for the next one. Smile

I'm with you, FF

I also wonder who will be at the door.  Will it be her husband's friend, or terrors, Rex?

I'm thinking that the

person at the door is the David that Skye knows.  This is getting very interesting.

Elaine

Elaine you've got that SO right....

Interesting, enthralling... wow!  With only two chapters to go I'm really wondering just what is going to happen!  I've got the first two books in Brenda's Last Stand series... I'm going to be getting to them ASAP... HOLY COW!!  And, thankfully, the third will be out soon so I won't have to wait for months to get to the conclusion.  Soooo many questions... not enough answers yet ~ and I'm very much "need answers" person.  Smile

I cannot wait to next week to find out who is at the door.

Hmmm, I posted right after

Hmmm, I posted right after FF last night and I don't see the post!  Too wierd! I was agreeing with FF and hoping that Skye stuck around even if it was the friend!  Dahlia needs some female support, especially form someone who's person has also been violated (that is of course as long as the person is strong and supportive, not wallowing in hurt or grief)!

Oh dear.

Is Taylor the stalker? Did

Is Taylor the stalker? Did Dahlia knife him? or did the stalker knife him? Oh boy, I want the next chapter now...

Papaya, you raised some good questions

I was also wondering if David was the stalker and Dahlia knifed him.  However, since Skye saw the beige Acura, it could have been Rex, and he just parked a ways down so as not to be seen.  I want next week's chapter right now!Embarassed

Personally, I don't think

Personally, I don't think there is a stalker and Skye was right to question herself.  I think Dahlia is making this all up I just haven't figured out why yet.
