It's finally here!!

Okay, folks, here it is... the conference thread. So chat away.

A few decisions we need to make:

1. In the past, we've met Thursday morning for breakfast. If you look at the conference schedule, you'll see that they have a general session that starts at 8:30. I know many of us are not morning people, so this would mean meeting for breakfast at 7 or 7:30 if you want to go to this session. Thoughts? Do we want to move this?

Now before you all jump in and say, lunch, I'm going to do a blanket veto on lunch. The reason is that many of our authors end up having lunch with their editors on various days, and I don't want to infringe on that. So, we could do breakfast any day, or we could do an evening meet up for appetizers or something.

2. ACFW: Last year, it didn't really work out to meet. But this year, I am determined! So, let's plan on all sitting together at a meal. Registration is not open yet, so we'll wait on planning this one.

Have you signed up for the Steeple Hill Ornament Exchange yet?

One more thing!

Please, if you are signing at either event, let me know and I'll add you to the list!

Also, would it be helpful to have a list of sessions being taught by Steeple Hill folk? If so, pass on the information.

Thanks!

Dream, I'm not really

Dream, I'm not really attending RWA, but I am going up for the FHL one day conference before RWA officially starts.

I am both signing and teaching at ACFW. My workshop will be Story Structure, so I hope not too many people will be intimidated by the title and come to the workshop! I'm also Genesis conference coordinator, so I get to announce the winners of the Genesis contest at the Saturday night banquet!

Camy

I will be at ACFW and

I will be at ACFW and teaching a class called Writing the Inspirational Romance 101. I will be signing there.

I'm also going to RWA and will be signing at the big event on Wednesday.

Camy, maybe we could hook up on Wednesday to say hi at least.

I think breakfast at 7:30 is fine on Thursday and if some have to leave for the meeting that's okay. We'll get to at least see them for an hour. You can tell I don't go to the meetings.

Margaret, hopefully we can hook up for at least a cup of coffee. I'll see you at the FHL conference, at least, right?

Hotel bookings

Hey there, the ACFW in Minn will be my first conference so I have lots of questions.

First off is accom. When we register with the hotel, we book a room. But if you share a room, do you each pay the full price or is it split?

What if you book by yourself and then someone asks to bunk with you later?

Or do you all team up beforehand?

Oh and Dream - thanks for

Oh and Dream - thanks for putting this thread up.

Anita Mae, you split the

Anita Mae, you split the cost of the room. The price quoted is for the room--not per person. Some people have 4 to a room.

I can't wait to see you.

Me too!!

It's going to be so much fun!

And yes, you split the cost. I've shared rooms at lots of conferences and the front desk is really great about it... you just give them your card at checkout (or cash, whatever) and tell them you're paying for your part of the room.

Conference questions

Okay, thanks, that solves that problem.

Next - for the 4 editor/agent chats, do you actually get your 4 choices, or do you pick 4 and they fit you into one available?

Hotel rooms

Yes, I'm so looking forward to meeting you all too. As you can see, it's on my mind already!

I have another question about rooms - I see on the ACFW conf chatter threads that some people book ahead of reg'n. I just went to the hotel to see what's avail and it looks like they only have rooms with 1 king bed left. What??? That doesn't seem right...

Or is it just too early to book?

Agent/Editor appointments

You may give 4 choices for editors and agents, but you're only guaranteed one editor and one agent. Sometimes you can get scheduled for more, but you won't know who or when until you get your registration packet at the conference.

But don't sweat it if you don't get your top choices. You have lunches and dinners to find their table and sit with them. In some ways, that's nicer because you're more relaxed and can chat rather than have the pressure of the ticking 15 minute clock in your appointments. But if you do sit with them at meals, don't forget that there's eight other people there too who'd like a chance to talk. Granted, some won't but I've sat at tables where one person dominates the agent/editor's time and the rest of us can't get a word in edgewise.

Booking the room

I verified with ACFW folks, and even though conference registration is not open, you CAN go ahead and book your room. You need to do it via the ACFW website to get the conference rates. I *just* went on there and booked my room... there were still rooms left, although I'm told they're going fast, so go ahead and book now. :)

I will both be going to the RWA conference and signing on Wednesday night.  I'd love to meet with the group from here, just let me know when.

Mission Accomplished.

Okay, I've just booked my room at the Sheraton. I had 2 choices so I picked the one with direct pool access and a sitting area. It's in the South Tower although I have no idea if that's a good or bad thing.

I don't think I'll have time for the pool, but I like the idea of being able to sit and fellowship with friends. Smile

Registrations are now open

Okay, it's a week later and no comments...does that mean I shouldn't have booked a room in the 'South Tower'?

Didn't you know...

That's where the ghost lives.  KIDDING!!

Actually, that's where my room is, too, so we'll be neighbors. Did you see that conference registration is now open?

Have you signed up for the Steeple Hill Ornament Exchange yet?

Yay! I am registered!

Dream, I am so glad to hear you're in the south tower too. I don't mind walking to the conf but it's always nice to walk with someone. Smile (indoor or out)

Yes, not only did I notice that reg'n was open, last night at 0100 hrs my time, when I was sure I wouldn't overload the system, I went on and registered.

The hardest part was deciding what genre to register under. I mean I've written 4 contemporary books and 1 historical but 3 of the contemporary are with an editor as we speak (I think).

I really want to pitch my historical so I picked that one but I didn't like that I had to chose one over the other since all the editors/agents that I picked represent both.

Okay, now that my bed and reg'n is confirmed, I'm getting hyped.

Anita Mae, that's great that

Anita Mae, that's great that you are all set. I still need to register.

Additional signing at RWA

In addition to signing Wednesday night at the RWA conference in San Francisco, I will also be signing at the Steeple Hill event for Love Inspired (Terri Reed will be signing for Love Inspired Suspense at the same time) -- I'm not sure which books we will be signing (I have several books out around that time and it could be any of them).

The signing will be on Friday, August 1 from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. in Salon C in the Golden Gate Hall.

Meet up schedules

Okay, based on input I was given from different folks, here's what I think will work best. Please let me know and share your thoughts.

RWA: Thursday Breakfast Dutch Treat Garden Terrace Restaurant (in the hotel) at 7:30 a.m.

ACFW: Thursday Breakfast Dutch Treat Nine Mile Grill (in the hotel) at 7:00 a.m. (sorry, early bird starts at 8) OR we could all sit together for the scheduled breakfast on Friday if folks aren't going to be there yet.

Thoughts?

Camy

ACFW breakfast

God willing, I will arrive at the hotel on Wed. I am registered for the Early Bird Thurs at 8 am as well.

I would prefer Thurs so that I can start off my 1st conference with friends, but since I eat each morning, either day will work. Undecided  Smile

I would prefer Thursday for

Harp & Bowl

So what happens Friday night?

I heard it's got music but what is the bowl part?

ohhhh

I wish...living in michigan with four kids...tough to go anywhere!  Cry

Everything happens for a reason and there is a silver lining to everything!

Harp and Bowl

Harp and Bowl actually refers to verses in Revelations. Basically, it's a time of music, prayers (lots of them) and Scripture reading. It's an amazing time of fellowship and drawing closer to the Father who has plans for us that exceed our imaginations. I highly recommend it, but should warn you of a few things. Bring lots of tissues, wear no mascara or at least the waterproof kind and having a friend or two with you wouldn't hurt either. You will walk out drained physically but refreshed/recharged spiritually.

Now you're really making me

Now you're really making me wish I could go to the conference.  I've already done my quota of two major conferences for the year though so it'll have to wait until next year.

Missing the conference this year too

I wish I could attend the conference this year too, but my vacation time was used up caring for my dad when he was dying. I wouldn't give up those days I was able to spend with him, but I will miss being there with everyone this year.

So sad I won't see you this

So sad I won't see you this year, Synner!

Camy

Harp and Bowl

Synner - Thanks for the info. The Harp and Bowl sounds awesome. Yes, I'll be sure to bring tissues. Hopefully a friend or 2 although since it's my 1st conf, I hoping a friend will bring me. Smile

Oh, Janet -  I'll miss you Cry literally - seeing as how we've never met.

I'm getting so excited that I added one of the ACFW countdown widgets on my blog.

Conference

I'll be going to both RWA and ACFW. I won't get to go to the FHL mini-conference again this year. I'm still president of my local RWA chapter and have to attend the Leadership Seminar. I think that's what it's called now. It used to be the Chapter Presidents' Retreat. Only a half year to go in the president's job. Yay! This is my second year. I'm so ready to be finished with that job.

I'm hoping to see my younger daughter when I go to ACFW. She travels for her job and goes to Minneapolis a lot. So she's hoping to schedule her calls for when I'm there. She's also pregnant and due on Dec. 27. This is my first grandchild. Also I'm going to Minneapolis early and renting a car, so I can drive to Rapid City, SD to see my elderly aunt. I figure I'd better take this opportunity to see her because I'm not sure how much longer she'll be on this earth. She's nearly 90. So I'm making the most of my trip to Minnesota.

Travel plans

Hey Merrilee - that's neat - that you would fly to Minn, rent a car and then drive to SD and I live in Sask - 1 1/2 hrs north of ND so I'm driving to Minn. It'll take me about 15 hrs to get there.

And, I will also be visiting - my mom lives in Thunder Bay, Ontario - about 4 hrs drive north of Minn. She has cancer (4 tumors and is refusing treatment) and after the conf, I will go spend some time with her. As with your aunt, I don't know how long she has. She is still walking each day but she tires easily.

I'm looking forward to meeting you.

Wow, lots of travel plans...

Sounds like you guys have quite the trips planned. :)

ACFW

Anita Mae,

I look forward to meeting you, too. I'm driving to SD because even with the price of gas, it is more expensive to fly to Rapid City than to rent a car and drive. We used to joke that you could fly to Minnesota, but you had to stop at the SD border and finish the journey to SD by stage coach. When we lived in Chicago, my dad's family had a reunion near Rapid City, but it would have cost us $1,200 to fly there. So we flew to Denver for $200 and rented a car and drove 6 hours to go to the reunion.

I'm sorry to hear about your mother. I keep her in my prayers. Merrillee

Flying to Rapid

Merrillee, one of my best friends lives in Rapid. It's so true about the cost of flying in there! It's gotten a little better since they added some carriers, but it's still pricey.

Rapid City

Dream,

As they say, "it's a small world." I was born in Rapid City, but we moved when I was quite young to Montana. We moved back to South Dakota when I was 10, but we lived in the eastern part of the state. I set my Jan. 2009 book in South Dakota. It was kind of fun writing about all the things I remembered from when I lived there. I had help with some of the recent details from friends who still live South Dakota.
