DUCK

duck.JPG

A young Harris Hawk named Duck, made us ... well, duck, during a
falconry demonstration on our 'research' weekend at the 'Becoming
an Outdoorswoman' camp at Lake Cowichan, Vancouver Island.

I'm going to have to write Duck's handler into a romance novel one
day -- she's pure heroine inspiration -- beautiful, vivacious, handles
a crowd with charm, wit and ease, and has a fierce passion for her
birds. She also clearly marches to her own drum. And in that bag
strapped around her hips are handfuls of soft, fluffy day-old chicks --
the reason young Duck keeps swooping back on demand. He'd eaten about
three at this point.

Duck, however, still has trouble hunting rabbit. Below, we are shown
how he is trained. By a fake lure dragged over the grass. He swooped
down out the evening sky, and ... stopped just short. A little afraid,
still. In no time, he'll apparently be chasing down hare on his own.

Guess everyone has to start somewhere ...

Hi Loreth,

Hi Loreth,

What a surprise when i came on line and went in this thread to look around, and i see mention of Lake Cowichan.

I grew up in that area, Caycuse actually...but i went to highschool in Lake Cowichan, as our little school only went to grade 6.

I had no idea they had a Outdoorswoman camp there. I moved away many years ago, but my brother lives in Youbou, which isn't far from where you are.

Just kinda gave me a nastalgic feeling seeing a my hometown area listed, and surprised to see it mentioned here.

I'm curious how exactly this womans camp works? How long did you stay, was it all about eagles/hawks/birds? or were there other recreational activites for you all. Do tell. Smile

Wow, very cool.

Wow, very cool.

Baby chicks

I know, I know, Terri  — but they were dead before they went into her hip
bag, and they apparently died naturally. I should have mentioned that!!
The chicks are donated by hatcheries where — I am given to understand —
many don’t survive beyond a day.

That said, these guys are predators. The wilds can be a harsh place.
It was an interesting trip for sure. And the course participants at the
camp were all basically pro hunting. That’s why many were there in the
first place — to learn to shoot, clean and cook things in the wild.
They felt nary a qualm for the baby chicks.

Gorgeous country

Hi Kathleen -- what a gorgeous part of the world to grow up in!! And talking of the high school in Lake Cowichan -- as we drove by it, the grads were all out throwing their hats into the air :)

The BC Wildlife Federation (BCWF) hosted the camp, and they hold them at different venues around the province -- once or twice a year. This one was held at the Cowichan Lake Education Centre (CLEC) ... and yes, I saw the road sign to Youbou!

The camp was run over Fri afternoon through Sat, Sun. And you get to choose four out of a whole bunch of courses ranging from rifle marksmanship, to ATV, to knife throwing, falconry, archery, outdoor cooking, map and compass, man tracking, trap shooting, caving, chainsaw and axe, etc etc.

The BCWF recognizes that it is woman - mothers and wives - who are
more likely to introduce their children to hunting and outdoor
activities — and to sustain that passion within a family unit — if they
have a level of skill comfort … if they come to love the outdoors
themselves. The BCWF thus initiated the BOW program - Becoming an
Outdoors-Woman.

I stumbled upon this program some time last year while researching
mantracking for my November SRS — MANHUNTER (My heroine is a mantracker
up north who must lead my Mountie hero through unforgiving Yukon
terrain after a cunning survivalist serial killer). I immediately wrote
the federation, asking when they’d be putting on another series of
courses, and where. I wanted to ride horses in the bush, handle a rifle
and shotgun, smell gun powder and wood smoke from a fire cooking game …
I want to bring that kind of veracity to my stories. So I signed up
with unmitigated glee :). I was also keen to meet folk from completely
different walks off life, ones outside my immediate writing circles.
And I was delighted when fellow RS writer Kim (KJ) Howe jumped at the
chance to fly out west and join me. Kim is an ‘experience’ junkie, and
it shows in her writing,too.

If you want to know more, let me know!!

Baby Chicks

I know....some animals need to kill others in order to survive.  That is a fact of life.

I love to watch nature shows, but when I was a kid, I would always close my eyes when a Lion would attack its prey.  Everybody's gotta eat.

I know its what they do.  Part of the circle of life.
