I was inspired to write Killer Cargo when I learned a friend of mine was a pilot in her youth. This amazing lady did many incredible things in her life, but she relished the freedom and independence that came with being able to fly, especially in an era when it was uncommon for women to do that. I wondered what would happen to a woman pilot who was suddenly grounded and the idea for Maria de Silva was born. Knowing how hard it is to not have control over your life, I imagined how it would be for Maria to have to rely on someone that God put into her life, a person from whom she could not just fly away. Of course, there's a bit of environmentalism in the book because I've long been interested in 'indicator species', animals that feel the sting of pollution long before it becomes apparent in the food chain. There are some amazing, committed, Godinspired people who make it their life's work to speak up for the creatures that have no voice, and Cy Sheridan was born out of that.

Our "indicator species" are doing just great here, from tiny little frogs through great big toads. It's a big comfort.
