DC, Mount Vernon and Williamsburg

Mount Vernon

A friend told me that vacations should involve a drink in one hand, a good book in the other...and a lounge chair.  She's not familiar with my family.  My dh's opinion is a vacation should involve walking...a lot of walking.  I made him wear his pedometer, and we walked between 10 and 15 miles a day while we visited DC, Mount Vernon and Williamsburg.  Despite all that walking we had a great time!  I got a ton of garden ideas in Williamsburg (for those who've been following my garden blogs) and hope to put my dh to work on some asap!  LOL

It was a strange vacation...we only had our youngest with us.  The two older girls are busy with their own lives, and our son had to stay home and work.  After years of traveling with four kids in the car and the choruses of, "She's touching me," and "Mom, make him/her stop," and "I have to go to the bathroom...now!" it was interesting to drive with just one kid in the car.

Our youngest is our Disney Princess, and while she enjoyed all the museums, she insisted they'd have been more entertaining if Disney had a hand in planning them!  She kept hoping Mickey would jump out!  LOL

Anyway, I'll post pics.  Visiting DC is always a treat.  I love the Air and Space Museum the best!  Mount Vernon is simply gorgeous.  And Williamsburg is great.  Walking through all the houses and shops--exploring all the houses and shops--it's so much fun!

But despite the fun, I'm so glad to be home!!

I'll confess, I worried

I'll confess, I worried about my dogs while we were gone.  It was the first time we tried kenneling them.  We found a very nice place.  They kept Ethel and Ella together, walked them every day and sent them home bathed.  My dh and daughter tried to convince me they were at summer camp.  LOL  I didn't buy it, and don't think the dogs did either, but they're home now and seem none the worse for wear.  My dh and daughter made me take this pic so the dogs would know they were on my mind!  LOL

Space Geek

Now, for those who don't know, I'll clue you in...I'm a huge space geek.  Love pictures from the Hubble.  Love watching the ISS go together.  Love...well, if it weren't for my awful motion sickness, I'd have loved to go to space.  The Air and Space Museum's about as close as I can get (other than Disney's Mission Space, which makes me sooo sick, but is soooooo worth it!)!

I have been to all three places and would love nothing more than to go back especially to DC.  I could spend a month in DC and not see everything I wanted to see.

Way back when life was cheaper the high school I taught at  sponsored a trip to DC for sophmores and the school paid for most of the kids trip and all of the chaperones.  I went 4 times and was totally surprised at how much they enjoyed the trip and how well behaved they were.  And by the way we used school buses to travel there.

Of course I was 25 years younger and had a lot more energy.

Ellen,

LOL A school bus filled with sophomores?  I'd have to be a LOT younger to make that trip, no matter how much I love DC!  Hope you get back, soon!

It's a beautiful region to visit!  I'm jonesing over the gate weights in Williamsburg.  I wanted one.  Of course, my fence doesn't go all the way around the yard, so I don't have a gate.  LOL

We went to Mount Vernon and

We went to Mount Vernon and Williamsburgh the year my now 16-yr-old was and 8-yr-old. My dd had just done a biography of George Washington for a school project. So while we were at Mt Vernon she was reading all the info in the little museum at the beginning of the tour. The employee was so impressed with dd's knowledge and her reading ability that while we were waiting in line to tour the house the employee took my dd into the house and upstairs (employees only area). She wanted my dd to see things that were being readied to go on display and then she took her up into the cupola so my dd could get a 360 degree look at the grounds. We reconnected just as we were entering the house. My dd still talks about and remembers the special treatment she got there.

BTW, I love the cover of your HAR and can't wait to read it!

Nancy and Frenchie

Nancy,  That's so cool about your daughter!  I'd have loved to see that view.  I was impressed just by the view from the backyard!  I'm sure that's a memory that will last a lifetime for her!  And thanks about the cover and the trilogy!!

And Frenchie,  LOL.  We walk a lot every day.  The dogs and I do about five miles, but the vacation's walks were tough.  Next time we do Disney, I'm making him were the pedometer again...I'll bet we walk as much or more there!
