If all romance novels were to disappear from earth except for one author’s work, which author would you save?

Hi All:

This may be too hard to answer. You could be selfish and choose your favorite author. You could be noble and save the author who would please the most other fans in the world. That probably means, Nora Roberts. I should stipulate that this would include saving all her future works as well. If you actually had the choice and the world was waiting for you to make it and knew it was you who was making the choice, who would it be?

Right now, I don't know who I would save. Let's not consider any author who published before 1900. I am thinking here of modern writers.

This question may be too hard to answer. I'd love to hear what others think. Can you name anyone?   Remember, you can only save on author's works. Not two or three. Just one! Surprised

Thanks,

Vince

Hi v1978lp:

I loved your answer too. I bet it will be the best one.

Thanks!

i agree that I would like to go

where the romance novels are going.

If I could only save one person's books it would be Sharon Sala.  I have never read a bad book by her and she is a wonderful person when you meet her.

There are so many others that I would love to save also but it is very hard to decide.

Yeah....  I don't think

Yeah....  I don't think many of us would want to stick around in the world that DIDN'T get the books....

But about who I'd save...  right now I'm going to go with Angela Knight.  I just love her Magiverse books and it's always a read that is steamy, full of action, and just about a destined forever type of love.  (it's like tunnel vision focused on the life and love of the H/h together, it's so much about stepping into their reality)  I think I could be happy reading her books.  But she'd need to start magically writing 50 books each month though, because I need more than one or two books a year.  So we'd have to put her on Speed or find some kind of time warp to throw her into so she could manage to write more.

About Nora Roberts...

About Nora Roberts...  I've read probably a thousand or so romances...  and I think that at most I've read three of her books.  Back in early high school, just because they were around and I was trying out romances before I really settled in on one line of Harlequins.

She seems such a phenomenon in romance and I haven't read much of her work at all....  just never been bored enough with the books I already read to expand out.  Is there a good reason for me to put down the HP/SD/HB/SN and start reading some Nora Roberts?

Nobody's prolific enough for me to write just one name

I mean to say Vince, do you know any writer who can keep up with me all on his/her own?

The place with all the books is getting quite crowded by now, but I don't take up that much room. comparatively speaking

This Only Applies to Romance

Hi Sadhbh:

I was relying most on your decision since you have probably read more than anyone else. Remember: this is just romance. All the other genres would remain to read. Do you read only romances? Could you enjoy books written before 1900?

Thanks,

Vince

About Nora Roberts

Hello Janet85:

I have read many Nora Roberts books but 90% of them were when she was writing Harlequin romances. They were great. Her new bigger and more popular books are like poetry and wonderful but none leave me wanting to read another very quickly. When I read a Lucy Gordon book, I want to read another one right away. Not so with Nora Roberts. I think her mass appeal actually makes her less appealing to fans who really like the Harlequin type romances. I think it is good to read a Nora Roberts book every once in a while because she just writes so well. I do prefer her single books as opposed to her trilogies.

           Thanks,

I couldn't pick one either.

I couldn't pick one either.  I would want to go where the books are going too.

Hi TXREADER 2:

Isn't Sharon Sala also another big romance writer under a pen name?  I think she is from Oklahoma but I don't get to see her because she is in the OKC RWA, however, I am not up to date.  She may not be in OKLA now. I can also add that I never read a bad Sharon Sala book.

               Thanks,

                             Vince

Who is Mercedes Lackey?

Hi FF:

I don't know who Mercedes Lackey is.  Is she a romance author or SF/fantasy?  What is her best book that I should read?

     Thanks,

               Vince

Mercedes Lackey writes for

Mercedes Lackey writes for LUNA.  She is science fiction/fantasy.  I don't think you'd like her stuff since you seem to like hard science fiction, and she doesn't do much of that.  I haven't read anything by her that I didn't like.

BTW, Vince,  since the PTB decided to cut the discussion off, we won't continue, but I just wanted you to know that I was not offended by your comments.

I'm going to be selfish. . .

I'm going to be selfish. . . Nora Roberts is my choice. I have to know what is happening to Eve and Roarke from her J.D. Robb series. And there are so many books that there would be a nice selection.

Janet, I love Nora Roberts. If you like romantic suspense, then her non-silhouette more meaty books are great. My first book by her was Montana Sky. I loved it. One of my favorite bigger book series by her is the Chesapeake Bay series. I loved it. From her Silhouette books, I love The MacGregor books. The grandfather Daniel is a matchmaker. love him. And the Stanislauski (sp?) books are great and, well, all of them. I am a big fan. Her non-silhouette paranormal books are good too. I really liked the Three Sisters Island trilogy. Her J.D. Robb books are sooo good. I love it. But you really need to read them in order. The characters become a family and Eve's story, her tramatic background, is told so that is best read in order. Eve is a cop so these are suspense.

Ya, my choice is Nora Roberts.
Margie :)

Another intriguing question,

Another intriguing question, but impossible to answer, other than--go where the authors and books go. Can I hitch a ride on that bus?

Nancy

Margie, I am a big Nora

Margie, I am a big Nora Roberts fan.  I love all of her books, the MacGregors was one of my first books that I read by her.

FF: I'm Reading and Loving "Fortune's Fool"

Hi FF:

You've got me hooked. I've already downloaded and read the first chapter of "Fortune's Fool" and it is beautiful.  I like folktales and  Mercedes Lackey seems to be a very serious writer. She says this book is based on Russian Folk tales. Her talk about the Tradition is very intriguing. The writing is very rich. It must take her a long time to write a book. I want to get the music for Swan Lake and listen to it as I read this book. From what I read so far, I would think Mercedes Lackey's books could enjoyably be read over and over again. I can see why you would want to keep her books.

BTW, that other thing isn't about what it seems. It involves issues that go back almost two years (especially the start of this year). In fact, this is at least the second time you've been innocently involved. It's an internet thing and there is nothing I can do about it except make the absolute minimum number of posts.

I want to thank you for your kind comment. I consider you a very knowledgeable person who I am proud to agree with more often than not.  We have been on the same side of a lot of issues. When I post an entry, I welcome most seeing your "cat" in the comment section. I hope Mercedes Lackey's book stays as interesting as the beginning is. She has at least 4 eBooks which means I can read them. It's such a joy to be able to make the type size as large as you want.

         Thanks,

                  Vince

Hi Tiffany W

The MacGregors was my first Nora Roberts book and one of my first romances ever. I read ten more Nora Roberts books in a row after that. I think Nora Roberts may have generated more new fans for the romance genre than any other author given her millions of books sold to mainstream readers. A while back I was reading a big Nora Roberts book and I was so moved, I looked up and told my wife, "Whatever they pay Nora Roberts, it's not enough. She earns her money." That's why I mentioned Nora Roberts in the original blog.

          Thanks for you post,

                  Vince

Mercedes Lackey

Vince and FF -- I haven't read any of Mercedes books either, but I'm going to order one.  From both of your descriptions, I think I'd enjoy it very much.

Vince, I hope you don't cut back on your posting.  I enjoy your questions and comments.

Margie -- I like the JD Robb books by Nora as well.

Vince, I agree that she had

Vince, I agree that she had generated a lot of new fans.  I am hooked on her books and I couldn't pick one that is my favorites.  I am always looking forward to her books when they come out.  I also like the books she writes as J.D. Robb.

Linda Howard for me...

Looking at my keeper shelves - she's the one I re-read the most and enjoy all of them - even her real oldies.  She writes wonderful love stories, intriguing suspense and great humour too.

Now - one other author's books are glaring at me for not picking her - Mary Balogh.  So I will mention that she's a very close runner up!

But, I still think I'm goin' with Vikki - the other world will be fun!

If you like fairy tales, you would probably like her LUNAs. They start with The Fairy Godmother, continue with One Good Knight and Fortune's Fool.  The most recent is the Snow Queen.  In my opinion, TFG is more accessible for an adult than OGK.   I found the villains in the OGK story a little bit archetypal, but then I remembered it was a fairy tale, and I was able to let characterization go a little bit.  I ordered Fortune's Fool when it came out in MMPB, but I still haven't received it (Gnat?).  I have to wait until SnowQueen comes out in MMPB.

Her other books include the Valdemar series, in which Heralds have Companions (white spirt beasts shaped like horses) and fight the good fight for a better than realistic royal family and kingdom.  She does wonderful characterizations in this series and develops a lot of different cultural backgrounds.  Human emotions are at the fore, but they are not romances.

Her YA series is the Jousters series.  I loved it because it made international political commentary without being in your face.  In fact, you could read it on 2 very different levels.

That should be enough to get you started.Wink I'm just a drug pusher!Innocent

Oh, I almost forgot

If you like Swan Lake, Mercedes Lackey has also written The Black Swan, which expands on the Swan Lake mythos.  And if you like that book, she has done a series based on fairy tales that is much darker than her LUNAs.  Mostly set in Edwardian(?) and Victorian(?) England.  There, she deals with elemental magic.  Her basis for the magic is quite realistic (e.g., Using magic drains the person physically)  She has done a CInderella story, a Snow White story, a Sleeping Beauty story and a SnowQueen story.  But this series is much darker than the LUNAs.  You get a happy ending, but you deal with really scary themes, as did the Brother Grimm.
