I came late to the 1000,000 book challenge. I thought that I was so very busy that the few books I managed to find time to read wouldn’t add very much to the target, so last year I couldn’t register and show the world my paltry reading totals. But this year, with every individual title adding to that valuable total, I knew I just had to join in. So far I’ve managed 19 books. And I’m hoping that a couple of long haul plane flights coming soon (to and from RWA San Francisco) will help me add a few more to the total. But that’s as a reader. As an author I have a very different perspective on the book challenge – and that’s in reading the reviews. As many of you know, I live in the UK, in Lincolnshire – way over on the East side of England - and so I don’t often get to chat with or hear much from my American readers. (That’s one of the reasons why I’m coming to RWA but that’s another story). I get emails about books when people love them and I’m so happy to read those, but I don’t get a chance to get a range of opinions from a range of readers.
But by checking out the reviews of my books that have been posted here for the Book Challenge, I can get a wonderful idea of how a book is working for most readers – and how sometimes it’s not. Take my latest Presents – Spanish Billionaire, Innocent Wife - I’ve been thrilled by the response of some of you – like Janet – who found that the combo of grief and passion had me sitting up right and jumping as I read the book, it was so intense and the intensity kept up all the way through the book. . But Vince didn’t quite share her enthusiasm - Story is Problematic – Hero is a Saint. He wasn’t too keen on my heroine.
And I was really thrilled when Nancy read outside her comfort zone and acknowledged: I may not like the genre, but I can still recognize a spellbinding tale. For lovers of this genre it is a not-to-be-missed book. For someone who wants to stretch their reading boundaries and preferences, you might as well start with a wonderful craftswoman. This book deserves a thumbs up! Then there have been a few older titles that have unexpectedly turned up – Broken Silence, The Hired Husband, The Antonakos Marriage – even one review of my 12 Point Guide to Writing Romance. It was fascinating to see how this older titles stood up after - in the case of Broken Silence – eeek! 20 years!
(Actually – as an interesting sideline – Broken Silence was the second book I ever submitted to Mills & Boon. It wasn’t accepted but I rewrote it some years later and this time it was bought.)
Now I’m hoping that knowing that the author often reads the reviews (and let’s be honest here – who could resist seeing what someone says about your book?) won’t put you off posting, particularly if you’re not keen on a story. I don’t read the reviews just to bask in the priase, though that’s very enjoyable.
But browsing through the review here on eharlequin is like being able to sit in and listen when a group of readers are chatting about the books they love, the ones they’ll keep, and the ones they’re not so keen on. It’s an invaluable opportunity to find out what readers think of my books – and so many others. And as an author who loves to learn more about the genre I write - what works and what doesn't, what's popular and what's less so - that's invaluable.
And at the same time it’s helping National Center for Family Literacy too, to benefit their literacy programs.
What a brilliant scheme.
Now I must go and read some more to add to my total. Only don’t tell my editor – because I’m also supposed to be writing . . . .

what authors are reading
It's ever so fun for readers too to see what authors are reading too. Do they stick with books in their genre? Do they read mostly research books? Just what kind of books do they read to transport them away from the pressures of writing?

Hi Christa
I like to see what authors are reading too. Recently I have posted mainly books in my own line but I do read a lot of others - when I get the time!
And soon I'm going to have another problem in that I'm reading a couple of books for research for my own next novel - and although I could add them to the Challenge - and I want to add them to the total - I don't want to name them as they'll give away the theme of the book . . .
Jayne?? Can I just put Book X and Book Y ??
I'll try and think of something

Kate, I'm so glad you have this viewpoint about the reviews! I've often wondered how the authors feel while reading them. Sometimes, as the reader, it's daunting to leave less-than-favorable reviews for fear of upsetting the author. And let me add one point further to what you said, I think that when people read several books by the same author there is always going to be one or two that they don't like as well, and one or two that they think are fantastic. People's taste vary so much. It's amazing how one book can be reviewed in so many different ways!
My ms was requested and is being reviewed by SSE's Mr. Griemsman right now, and hopefully I'll be soon joining Harlequins wonderful roster of authors. If not now, then sometime in the future. And when that happens, I'm hoping very much that I can display that same wonderful attitude you have!
Oh, and I also believe that the authors naturally would have less time to post reviews than the readers. After all, it would be hard to read lots of books at the same time you're working on your ms. To me, it's very understandable.

Keep em coming!
Kate, it's completely acceptable to me! I even like the idea of Kate's Research Book One and so on, LOL....whatever works to keep that counter turning! We have another book delivery due in August, and I'd love it if we could crack the half way mark by then....

Oh, and the Girl Scout flood disaster blog that I was going to post has been placed on the backburner because we're missing some info that'll be necessary. Wanted to give you the latest on it, even if you forgot I asked.

I see my name being taken
I see my name being taken in vain. *grin* *waves* I'm one of the guilty ones reading and reviewing all the HPs from the 70s onward.
Interesting to read the perspective of an author looking at this challenge. Really, it's been so much fun for me as a reader to review the books I read and talk to other fans of the same books. It's such a bonus to have the authors around the forums, occasionally giving extra insight into the books. It's a fun bonus all around: not only does this challenge aim to help a charity, it's opened up communication/discussion of Harlequin books.
Heh.. about the author perspective... As a whole I think it's been a pretty positive flow of discussion about books. I hope that the occasional negative feedback isn't too demoralizing for the authors! Really we all have such diverse reading tastes... not everyone will enjoy every book. I've ripped apart three books though (out of the 300 I've reviewed), so I know I'm guilty of demoralization myself, but I've sung the praises of numerous other books that I've loved to pieces. I hope it balances out and that as a whole the authors and readers are both getting a lot out of this experience.
Hi Kate!
Thanks for letting the readers know that it is okay to not like a book and say so. It can be daunting when we know the authors are reading our reviews - I certainly don't want to hurt anyone's feelings! But we all can't like every book or we would be a bit boring. Just because the plot doesn't appeal doesn't mean the writing is poor - Actually I don't think I've ever read a harlequin that I found was poorly written. Obviously the criteria for publishing is very high.

There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the pleasure is having lots to do and not doing it!
With that reminder.... I
With that reminder.... I just want to add the three books I ripped apart...
were books that were not poorly written, but had plot elements that did not appeal to me personally (2 cases of utterly disillusioning infidelity/adultery, 1 case of a hero who needed to be beat up in a dark alley). So it was a personal thing.
Seriously, I avoid infidelity with a mile long pole. It's almost comic. I skim books to make sure it ain't there. I just read two books where it was so disillusioning and horrible recently. I have a list of "safe authors" who can always give an angst-free, light read, with fidelity. When I read a book which has a surprise reveal of fidelity during a separation, my reaction is to want to send the author a medal and candy. It's such a bonus and pleasant surprise to find believable fidelity in the world of HP, where the heroes are alphas with a sexual history that would scare any normal woman.

Believe me, when you've been treated to regular abusive emails from one 'reader' who sends me a message every time a new book comes out, the reviews on here are mild. (I never know quite why this woman even troubles to read my stuff when it so clearly isn't her sort of thing
)
And let me add one point further to what you said, I think that when people read several books by the same author there is always going to be one or two that they don't like as well, and one or two that they think are fantastic. I totally agree - and sometimes it can just be the mood you're in when you read a book and not the book at all. We all have personal likes and dislikes, and if a book doesn't work for someone, then it doesn't . . .
My ms was requested and is being reviewed by SSE's Mr. Griemsman right now, and hopefully I'll be soon joining Harlequins wonderful roster of authors.

I thought you'd find your name here
It's such a bonus to have the authors around the forums, occasionally giving extra insight into the books.
I'm glad you feel that way - it's an intriguing thing the way that someone can read a book in totally different way from the way I wrote it. Sometimes I read a review of a book and wonder if it's really the one I wrote - or one I've read.
It's a fun bonus all around: not only does this challenge aim to help a charity, it's opened up communication/discussion of Harlequin books.
I totally agree. One of the things that annoys me when people put down romance and the writers and the readers of it is that they claim that people read romance totally uncritically - the posts here prove otherwise - and they prove that romance readers read lots of other books too.
Heh.. about the author perspective... As a whole I think it's been a pretty positive flow of discussion about books. It has been pretty positive - but, as I'v e often said on other forums (Presents Paradise particularly) we all have 'hot buttons' of things we don't particularly like - fair enough. So some books we don't. But we need to keep a balance too and remember that our hot buttons are just that - personal ones - doesn't mean the book might not work for someone else.
I think every author understands that you can please all of the people all of the time. But anything that looks like a personal campaign really hurts.

I'd hate to think that anyone only wrote a nice review of one of my books because I might be reading it. What would be the point? It's like getting a friend to review yor books on Amazon - you might have a string of five stars, but It wouldn't mean anything. Like I said, I'm well aware of the fact that you can't please everyone - and as you say, it would be so boring if we all liked the same thing.
And I totally agree with you that a book can be one of most wonderfully written novels, but if the story doesn;t appeal, then it just doesn't. I spent enough of my life studying literature to know that some books that others thought were brilliant, beautifully written, deep and meaningful, to me were just a bore. And books I've loved and DH or my best friends have hated.

I think...
it is great to hear different viewpoints as sometimes what doesn't work for someone else works perfectly fine for me. One reviewer elsewhere who I completely respect didn't like the new JR Ward book because she felt it lacked romance; since I love urban fantasy, her reasons made perfect sense to me but also were part of why I loved the book so our ratings were completely different but when reading the reviews, the reasons were clear. What I DON'T like is when someone insults the author as then it reads more like an attack than just an opinion of a book. And Kate, I never understand either why some folks keep reading books they won't like. When Laurell K. Hamilton changed how the Anita Blake series read, I didn't like it at all. So I simply don't read her books any more! Seems like that one reader would do the same but....
And just for the record, I did finally read a HP recently (and even liked it) and I have bought one of yours to give it a try.... you made good points elsewhere about at least giving it a try so I am!
