I am not sure the type of cancer my 27yr old nephew died from. I always get the name wrong and it started with growths in his body. He was a radiologist and 2 yrs ago felt weird and achy all over and decided to x-ray himself for the heck of it. I guess there were growths all over inside his body but they didn't turn to cancer for over a year. (Supposedly the growths only become that way 3% of the time.) His co-workers donated much of their sick leave to him but a few months ago he had to quit work because the chemo was making him so sick.
I hadn't seen him for 3 yrs due to an estrangement from my brother but I did speak to Andrew (little Andy) on the phone. I was going to Texas with my family on the 11th to visit him when I got the word he was admitted to the hospital then sent home to pass away. I called and he was already slipping away and I couldn't talk to him. I should have gone earlier and will have to live with my decision to be mad at my brother and stay away. Little Andy would never let on how bad he was and was optimistic until the end. He was more concerned about how his death would affect his parents and siblings then himself.
A death can either bring a family together or tear it apart. When my mother died it tore us apart and started an estrangement between me and my brother. Little Andy brought our huge 9 kid/18 grandkid family back together and for that I am grateful. I know my mom is up there tsking that it took something like this to wake me up. I'm just glad she is there to help my nephew.
I have never written a lyric in my life but as I waited all night for the call I got at 6 a.m., words and a melody poured into my brain. The song is on my blog and what I feel my mom sent to me as she went to help my nephew on his journey. It is not for me but for Andy. I will always remember him as a little boy and the days we played He-Man and Skeletor and I watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoons over and over again.

My condolences go out to you
My condolences go out to you and all your family as you work your way through this loss. It is very hard to lose any family member, but it is especially tough when it is a young person and there is an estrangement. I pray you all find a new closeness and a eventually a new beginning for you extended family.

Angel, you made me cry....
I'm so sorry about your nephew. Such a young age.
It's nice to know that you and your brother are now working things out, though. You're so right - it does often take tragedy to overcome some our invisible shields and walls.
What you wrote is so precious... and touching. Beautiful, in fact. I'll be thinking about you in your sorrow.

Thank you for the kind words. I had to put the blog out there to let some of my sadness out and because I am so proud of Andy.
He was so responsible and such a good role model. His younger brother told me he had never even kissed a girl as he was waiting for the right one. (Andy would never have told his aunt that!)
What is helping me to connect with my brother (Big Andy) is that I have 2 boys and I know that no matter how old they get they will always be my little boys. I can't imagine how bad the pain is when you lose a child.
Love, Angel
