I have to admit, I'm getting a little frustrated. A lot of the time I feel like I'm spinning in circles....so much to do and I get little bits done in snippets but nothing feels truly accomplished.
One of the things is reading. I have a stack of books waiting to be read...books I'm ANXIOUS to read....and somehow it gets relegated to the bottom of the list...because it's not a priority.
I've got a chapter to finish. It doesn't seem to be getting done either.
I admit I'm having a terrible time focusing, partly due to the fact that the entire family is in the house...kids are on break, husband is working from home. We are in the new house but there are still things unpacked. Expense claims to fill out. Business type stuff that I didn't do for the month we were offline. A garden that is suffering from neglect and needs my attention. A list of "little" things that needs to be done as long as my arm.
So yep. Reading is falling wayyyy down on the list.
It's especially frustrating because what I'm reading now is GOOD. Really good. And I so want to get back to logging books for the 100,000 book challenge on Eharlequin.
Anyway as I told my mum (who is also in the moving thing right now), somehow it all manages to get done, we just hope we're still sane at the end.
And dammit, tonight I'm going to read a chapter.

Me too!
When your to do list is longer than it was at the beginning of the year, it is hard to get on board with the reading challenge. There aren't enough hours in the day but I keep trying to stretch the ones that are there. I need to read to keep sane so hope you finish your chapter. My husband can't understand why I weed one plot of my garden all the time and I tell him it's so I think I have accomplished something. The rest needs to be redug to weed so it's a much bigger job that keeps getting put off. That said the part that gets weeded all the time is growing and the part that needs redigging is shrinking so progress is being made. Now if I could only say the same thing about my housework and paperwork. At least gardening gets me outside.

Donna - may I suggest post-its?
Note your reaction on them when you have it, and then you'll still remember it when you find time to review the book
Jayne will kill me for this, but don't worry about the reviewing for the moment, just make sure you have reading time to keep you sane (and writing time because I'm impatiently awaiting that chapter you haven't finished in that book you're trying to complete - hey I'm a selfish readaholic, and I make no apologies for it
)
As for the moving and the boxes, well four years on there are still unopened boxes in the attic (but very few of them have books in them
) and we've survived!
The garden will survive, it's funny how weeds survive so much better than cultivated plants - are they what they refer to as "hardy annuals"? or have I just made it patently obvious that I'm a readaholic, not a gardener?
as for the kids, if you're deep enough in the book you're reading/writing, you won't even notice them! (now aren't you glad for my kids sake that you're the author, not me!? )
Seriously just try and keep plugging away and you'll get there eventually - lists may be your best friend!

Hmmm ....
both of you working from home? .... is this going to be a permanent thing?
even so, if he's going to work from home and you're trying to work from home ... I'd say you need to split kid duty! ... and yard duty! ... and unpacking duty!
seeing as he's home anyway ... next time one of the kids gets Mommy, Mommy, Mommy for attention send to Daddy, Daddy, Daddy
and if that fails .. you need to soundproof your office and put a steel door on it with a great big lock and a do not disturb sign! LOL
.... ah, all in it's own time ..... just what ever you do, don't stop writing!

Oh! That me reminds me of the Cosby episode
where Clarie has a soundproof room built so she can tune out the family! My kids were told yesterday that I was "off duty" and to go bother Dad. They kept forgetting!

Donna, thanks for a great
Donna, thanks for a great blog. It was good to hear someone else. Life has been crazy for us lately. I have so many books that I want to read and books I have to review that I am overwhelmed and frustrated myself from other things. Then almost at the same time, 2 different places where I review decide to change the way they want reviews done. Enough is enough! I don't have all the answers but one thing I have decided to do is to take assessment of things. What things, places, groups fill me with joy and productivity and which don't? Which fulfill me, providing me with more energy, and which fritter my energy or just leave me angry, down or empty. And then, I plan to prune my life, recenter, and tune out and ignore all those things that seem to destroy that focus (includes family time). Sometimes these reassessment times are very good at opening doors and finding the joy within to lead me where I need to be. It's a good way for me to tune out all the voices of family and friends telling me what I should be doing and moving forward more creatively. It is even a basic for spiritual direction called discernment of the spirits St. Ignacius talked about ---- even in ways that have nothing to do with religion, I find it a good way to discern direction ---what makes your heart sing and what fills you with dread/frustration. Anyhow, mostly wanted to say that sometimes I find my moments of supreme frustration to be a precursor to changing direction a bit and discovering or affirming a new direction that is ultimately more fulfilling than the one where I was before I felt frustrated. Doesn't lessen the frustration
but it is a pattern I have noticed in my own life. Thanks so much for this great blog.

Simpler...
The whole reason we were happy to move here was for things to get simpler. And in a way...we are. We can enjoy the outdoors so much...it's just all the little one-time details that we need to get out of the way. And every now and then I go a little crazy.
RIght now I'm printing out expense forms. How exciting. Tonight I washed dishes. Filled the bird feeder, and added some impatiens to my balcony planters. I think we just need to get to some sort of status quo, and I'll be fine. LOL.
And no, the "both work from home" thing is NOT permanent. Thank god. I dread retirement. Ggggg. There is a lot of truth to the "absence makes the heart grow fonder" thing. He needs to give me time to miss him so I can be happy for him to come back! LOL.
So what are you all reading now anyway? I'm reading The Creative Habit by Twyla Tharp - recommended to me by my fab CP, Michelle Styles. I hope to finish it so I can blog it soon!

In between books ....
I'm undecided what to pick up next ... I'm overwhelmed at work right now and really should be doing work, but I'm playing here on eHarl instead ... LOL
we're Ontario vegetable growers ... dh is the hands on operation guy .. and I'm the office and errand girl, also the one who looks after everything worker wise (we are mixed Canadian labour and 15 migrant Mexican labour) ... I know out West 150 acres is peanuts for a farm, but for vegetables we're about mid-size .... in our peak we're sending 7 or 8 53' trailer loads of celery in to the chains on top of our other crops ... so I can't avoid dh not matter where I turn ...... he's at work, he's at home, he's on my friggin' cell phone LOL ..... every year I look forward to my one week of peace, in December he heads way way up north to go moose hunting .... ah bliss! .... that's usually when I paint the house ;) .... and really, all that isn't a vent ... it's a life and usually it's pretty good :)
I'm glad your new place gives you some peaceful scenery and I do hope eventually you'll have time to enjoy your garden .... I love gardnening .... and I've recently discovered that gardening and audio books work very well together!
