A few tips for saving gasoline this summer…

With the cost of gasoline skyrocketing this summer, I’ve been on the prowl for tips to help me get better gas mileage. Unfortunately, while the media seems more than willing to report the ever–increasing price of crude oil, I haven’t run across many tips on saving gas. What few tips I have scraped together, I wanted to share with you here. If you have more ideas on how to save fuel, please share them!

So here we go– Save gasoline this summer by:

1)      Turn off your engine if you know you will be idling for longer than 30 seconds to a minute. Waiting on a long train to cross the intersection? Turn off the engine. Sitting waiting for soccer practice to end? Turn off the engine. Drive thru line backed up? You got it…turn off the engine. While you idle, going nowhere, you are getting 0 m.p.h. Ack!

2)      Keep your tires inflated and your engine tuned up. Keeping your car in good working order means it doesn’t have to work as hard to get you where you are going.

3)      My husband’s favorite driving tip… Don’t accelerate toward a red light. Coast. This will save your brake linings too!

4)      Don’t run the air conditioning unless you really have to. In the evening or morning, you may be surprised how cool you’ll stay with the windows down. And along the same lines, if possible, run your errands in the morning so you don’t need as much A/C to cool your car down.

5)      Whenever possible, carpool with a friend or neighbor.

6)      And the number one best way to save gasoline is…don’t drive! :-) Stay home and read one of my two hot summer releases instead!

DUTY TO PROTECT is on shelves now or available through eHarlequin from Silhouette Romantic Suspense.

For years, counselor Ginny West (whom readers first met in DANGER AT HER DOOR last summer) has been helping abused women build a better life for themselves.  Then a client’s husband turns his violence against Ginny, and she finds herself not only trying to protect the woman and her children but also fighting for her own life.

Responding to a call at the local women’s center, firefighter Riley Sinclair saves Ginny from a burning office and resuscitates her when she stops breathing. Having already faced one tragic loss in his life, Riley vows the dangerous man threatening Ginny won’t get a second chance to hurt her.

Although Ginny resists Riley’s guard duty, she can’t deny the sizzling attraction she shares with her fireman protector. But Riley has secrets he can’t share with Ginny, and she’s afraid to give Riley her love until she knows what he is hiding. While Ginny learns to trust Riley and her heart, her client’s scorned husband is drawing closer… and his plans for vengeance are growing more deadly!

Great tips Beth!

the tip about keeping your tires inflated is really an important one ..... car uses tons more gas if the tires are low ... alot of drivers don't realize this ... plus your tires wear down twice as fast

another tip, ... accelerate moderately from a stop ... gunning the car to get up to speed more quickly uses far more gas than if you did it more gently

and ... avoid speeding .... not only is it against the law but the faster you drive the more gas you consume!

... oh and by turning off your engine while waiting, you're saving the environment!    ... great topic!

Duty to Protect Her .... thanks for the reminder to put this one in my cart!  ..... SRS are not my normal line, but I can't resist a gorgerous firefighter  :)

Thanks for the tips Beth.

Thanks for the tips Beth. I'll have to look for the book. One thing they have reported on how to save gas up here and one thing they specifically said is that with air conditioning in cars for at least the last ten years you actually save more gas if you keep the windows closed and use your air conditioner. Opening the windows creates more wind resistance and drag using MORE gas. At least that's my reason for continuing to use air conditioning! My husband goes the other route though.

I want to get a basket for

I want to get a basket for the front of my bike.  lol. Then I can run most errands on bike by just being able to throw stuff in the basket.

(I can't quite picture a basket on my bike without imagining pink and barbie style baskets though....  I haven't seen an adult looking basket recently)

Pat

Pat- Interesting about the windows down being less efficient.  Is that for highway speed only or around town too? Most of my driving is in town, stop and go.

Thanks, Beth

Florida and ac

I live in Florida so rolling the windows down during the summer isn't an option no matter whether it saves gas or not.  Otherwise, I'd arrive at my destination in a melted puddle.... so NOT attractive! Undecided

Janet

LOL!  I love the image of a basket for your bike. I wish my local streets were safe for bikes but they are narrow, heavily traveled, two lane country roads for the most part.  A bike would get pancaked, I'm sure.

Glad you can ride yours though...

I vote for the pink Barbie basket! Laughing

I don't think I should go

I don't think I should go with the barbie pink basket, because if I sprung for that I'd have to buy tassles for my handlebars.  You just can't have barbie pink baskets without the pink plastic tassles for the handlebars....

Seriously though, I'll keep an eye out for a basket to add to my bike.  I've done feats with balancing bags off of each hand without banging the bags into the front tire....  a basket would save me from possible embarrassment/injury.

Oh, Janet ....

you have to have pink tassles!    ROFL

good for you on riding the bike .... if you can't find a "real" bicycle basket ... you can get a pet carrier for your bike at pet stores ... they're canvas, so very light weight ... and some slip off with a shoulder strap for easy carrying once your park your bike

check out eBay ....

that might be a little more

that might be a little more sophisticated than a basket... so that's a plus.  But then I'd have to carry around the carrier thingy essentially like a backback, so.... hmmm.....  *weighs it*

We'll see.
