Note to Self: I Am Not a Slacker!

It can't possibly be mid-July. Wasn't it just yesterday I wondered, will summer ever get here? Now it's here and half over. Various writing obligations are mounting. Deadlines are approaching. Instead of only worrying about what's yet to be done, I'm trying to recognize and celebrate things accomplished.

In the first couple of weeks alone, my latest western, THE FALL OF ROME, came out and the reviews--thank goodness--have been awesome. I sold two more books to HQN (Harlequin)! Yay! I lost more weight. Woo-hoo! I increased my 30-minute daily power walk to 40. Ouch! I completed a two-part interview that will be featured at Jennifer's Random Musings and wrote two blog posts for Babes in Bookland. I completed 3/4 of a research intensive synopsis. I updated my website, created a presence at Facebook, and posted semi-regularly here, and at my blogs on MySpace and eHarlequin. Lastly, I created a really cool book widget through Adaptive Blue in hopes of advancing Internet sales. (I'll write more about that later as it's a really cool company and a nifty sales tool!)

And I accomplished the majority of those things after working the 9-5 day job. Not bad. Okay. Clearly, I am not a slacker, so why do I feel like I'm not working hard enough? Probably because although I accomplished a lot in the last two weeks, not once in all that time did I get to work on my WIP. Yeah. That's it. Although I've been writing, I haven't been writing. The synopsis doesn't count in my mind because it's working a whole different set of muscles. As is writing a blog post or article or answering interview questions.

I have to finsish this synopsis. Then I have to critique a proposal. Then I am absolutely diving back into my WIP.

Unless the revision letter for EVIE EVER AFTER comes first. Gak!

Okay. This is where I remind myself of what my friend Mary always tells me. "You do your best work in chaos."

Right.

Beth, I am tired

after reading everything you have accomplished.

I agree that I feel like a slacker if the WIP is just sitting there. I actually get grouchy if I don't get any writing done for a few days. (My hubby will attest to this.)

Maybe try to fit in 30 min just to make yourself feel better?

Angel...

You're a kindred soul. Yes, grouchy is exactly how I feel. Under mood, I wrote: Anxious. But grouchy is a better word choice. LOL

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who feels that way when the WIP sits untouched for days. I like your 30 minute suggestion. I'll give it a whirl. It's just that when I'm deep in the head of the synop story, it's hard for me to shift gears. It's worth a shot though. Thanks!!

Wiping the sweat off my

Wiping the sweat off my brow, I know I am a slacker. Lord, I'm winded and exhausted after reading all you have accomplished in the last few weeks. It sure sounds like you have two fulltime jobs, but you are not getting to what you really want to do and that is to write.

Nancy...

Amazingly, somehow, I always get to the writing and once I'm in that zone, a lot of other stuff falls through the cracks. LOL Foot in mouth

Oh my god! I'm just tired

Oh my god! I'm just tired reading about all you've done. I'm glad your books are doing so well but I guess that gives us pre-published writers a chance to realize - we actually have time to concentrate on our WIP! Are we lucky or what?

I think the 30 minute idea sounds good.

Hi Pat!

Don't get me wrong. I'm not complaining. (I just whine a teensy bit every now and then when I'm overwhelmed. But it's all good. Honest!) I count my blessings every day. Having the opportunity to share my stories with readers is my dream come true! However, it is, I must confess, a whole different vibe writing on deadline after deadline. The good news is it keeps you focused and productive. Laughing

30 minutes.

I just got that tip from some author loop I am on. The author said you could even buy a timer. Another suggestion was to work on your WIP on a 'clean' machine, a computer, with no internet hooked up to it so you won't be tempted to go on-line.

Ah, yes...

The temptation to go on-line. The Internet is a best friend and an evil distraction at the same time. ;)  I've been toying with the idea of buying an Alpha Smart. Have you heard of those?

Thanks again for the suggestion, Angel. I'll let you know how I do!

Beth

I have heard of the Alpha Smart. I need to google it and check it out.

Hi Beth

I really wasn't taking it wrong. I'll bet a lot of writers who are lucky enough to be published wish they could find more time for their WIP so I'm really glad I've had some time to do that.

Starting tomorrow I'm back to work full-time so my writing time will probably go down considerably.

Pat...

Sending you cyber hugs as you re-enter the fulltime madness. Yes, you'll feel a time crunch, but there are all sorts of ways to squeeze in writing time. If you're driven enough (and I bet you are), you'll make it happen! Go, Pat, go!!

Thanks!

I needed that. I've got one manuscipt in for consideration and I'm working on another one. So I'm crossing fingers, toes and everything else I can think of.

Pat...

All body parts crossed for you! And remember, it's all about passion, dedication to craft, and perseverance. Hang in there!
