New playground. Yay

anywhere to ask...?

Super excited about the new forums!

I'm wondering if there is/will be a thread where we can ask questions in addition to those addressed in the FAQ.

In my case, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me why my HTML in my blog posting isn't working. It's making me crazy, because I can't see anything wrong with it.

Testing! <font color="#000000">See? Not working. <font color="purple">Nor is this.

But I don't want to clutter up the thread with whining because I really do like everything else Smile

I second the anywhere to ask...

As I can't figure out why I can't upload a picture!  Worked on the old board so I'm sure I'm doing something wrong!

Lady Am ... html doesn't

Lady Am ... html doesn't work in this site ..... you need to use the buttons for bold, italics, underscore ..... I'm hoping they'll give us more editing tools

HTML

Yes, the allowed HTML tags are not working it seems or I don't know what the new code is.  I would very much appreciate knowing the image code so I can start posting. The old code doesn't seem to work.

A true teacher is a person who, at the end of the school day, still likes children!

It's going to take some

It's going to take some getting used to, especially for folks who are used to writing up their book reviews in Word before posting them into the comment box.  With this system, I've installed a handy little button below the comment box in your editing suite.  It looks like a clipboard with a W on a piece of paper in front of it.  Click on that to paste content created in Word onto these new boards, it will strip the formating out.  Then you can use the editing suite to decorate your post the way you like adding in the Bold and Italics and coloring font etc.,  Alternately you can create your messaging in notepad or wordpad and then paste into the comment box here.

To add images there's a little TREE icon below the comment box...image looks like a nice leafy tree.  Click on that and paste the image URL into the field.  I usually align my pictures left or right and add space around them by assigning the numeric value of 5 to the vertical and horizontal space fields.  The other thing you CAN do is open up another browser for book covers and drag images over from the main site into your blog/forum post and resize by clicking and dragging the little corners of the image until you get it the size you want.

Once you get used to it, it's MUCH easier on this system, if you have any questions just let me know by posting here or emailing me

Editing Tools

Jayne the editing tools are not showing up ..... the only tools that I show available are  .... B-bold / I-italics / U-underscore / ABC-strike through / unordered list / ordered list / insert link / unlink / smilies  ..... that's all she wrote!

there is no Word clipboard .... no "tree" icon to insert pics .... no font colour selection

Yes, I think Kathy called

Yes, I think Kathy called the problem--we don't see the tools you're talking about.  (Or I'm just blind...always possible!)

It sounds like once we do see them it'll be a great WYSIWYG style editor...awesome!  Smile

Just to

Just to update...

Okay...dragging images from another browser window works (thought I don't know how to get the <img align="left"> affect yet) but I still don't see any of the tools you mentioned. I triple-checked!

more on book cover images

I do not see the tree image. Also dragging does not work. I use Firefox.  Am I going to have to use Microsoft IE now? (please no! I avoid Microsoft whenever possible) Everything I try to do is not working to put up a book cover image. Straight HTML code is a lot easier for me than the "easy" way. Please help.

editing tools

when we beta tested the site, there were other editing tools offered ..... one for html input ... a special Word clipboard ... insert image .... font colour

these are not available yet to us .... or perhaps, the powers that be have determined they should not be offered .... we'll just have to work with what is offered for now until they get things sorted

I really wish they would do

I really wish they would do the insert image, esp. if it was in the beta! MySpace has the easiest way to insert images.   Book covers are nice.  They look much nicer than straight text.  The internet is a visual medium after all.  I am going to eat dinner but I will wait to post until I can figure out how to put the beautiful book covers in my blog.

Oooh, I didn't realize you

Oooh, I didn't realize you were a beta tester.  Makes sense...I'll be patient, then.  Thanks for explaining, Kathy--at least I'm not crazy!

Paisley--I'm with you...I am such a cheater when using programs like Dreamweaver...sooo much easier just to sneak into the code and fix things.  Innocent

pics

Hey Jayne,

I am not seeing the tree editor button either....just to second what Katherine said above.  The only way to post pics right now is the drag and drop.

Firefox browser does not work in new community set up?

OK the cut and paste of images seems to work in IE but not in Firefox.  Firefox is my normal browser not IE which I avoid like the plague.  I don't know if the techies can make it Firefox compatible as well but it would be nice if this is possible once everything setlles down.

tree works with IE

Now that I signed in with IE, I see the tree etc but it is not there on Firefox..... the tree was not there when I first signed in with IE but it is there now.   I use Firefox for everything else so it would be nice if when the dust settles the platform would work with Firefox.

What about now?

While it's true we like Firefox, we've spent a HUGE amount of time dedicated to testing the site on all browser versions.  If you have IE 6 for example we know and have been battling some major display issues...remember we were supposed to launch Jan 2....I'm just sayin' Wink

If you find ANY bugs or wonky looking stuff let me know....I like squishing 'em!

Oh, and I just added the extra functionality to the text editor...anyone seeing them?

New editing tools are there!

Yes Jayne ... the tools are there!  ... thanks so much

Merri, try shutting down your computer and then openning Firefox ..... I think you'll find the new editing tools will be there ..... I think whenever the techies made changes that was the only was to get them to show up, to "refresh or restart" your browser .... hope that works for you

RSS feeds on the Simply board

Jayne ... I posted to the Hosties over on the Simply board ..... when I tried to set up RSS feeds for that board it only set up the feeds for the Hostie thread and the Million Dollar Dad thread ..... the "folders" for the lines weren't offered ..... did I do something wrong?

Major plus

I have a Wordpress.com blog and the "creat a post" functions are nearly 100% identical. I would've liked the "code view" feature, but I guess you can't have everything!Smile

The "code view"

It's the "behind the scenes" html of the WYSIWYG.

In code view the following

HI!

would be "<b>HI!</b>"

Having the code view is useful for the very thing I did when I was creating the example. I added a hard return after bolding HI! and it took the bolding with it to the next line. Without code view to see the "</b>" -- to insert the cursor in the proper spot after the ">", I had to unbold the word, add the hard return, and rebold it. Had I hit the return before bolding the word, it wouldn't have been a issue.

I also like the code view for the tweaking the spacing: "<br>" vs. "<p>" .

I hope this helps. Smile

one thing that I don't like

Ok, it is easy to post a review but tone thing I really don't like...

If I post a book cover image, nothing else shows up in the main blog but a title.  There should be a way to add a couple of lines of text and an image.   RIght now it loks like those deadful teasers from 2007 that we all hated.  I understand the 5 lines for the main blog but even if I press on my blog, it's all these teasers with no text.  At the very least on my own blog, the text shoeld show instead of just a teaser.  We all hated those teasers last year because you never saw anything.  For the main blog, i get it...equal space, etc  but there has to be a way to see our complete blogs from our profiles hopefully?

One bug...I am using a color code for my letters  #400080 and only bolding the title but the whole text looks bold.

Paisley....use the text editor under the comment box to color your text or add formatting....html doesn't work here...

Re: one thing that I don't like

Merri, I noticed that when I click on my own Blog I get the condensed version  .... however when I go to the Profile page of another Member and click on their latest blog entry it's the full version of the blog that comes up ....

try that with mine ... just click on my name on this post ... then click on my most recent blog entry ... I think you'll find it opens fully not in a "trimmed" version

hope that helps!

new blogs

It would be nice if when we pressed read more from the main challenge that it opened a new browser page for the full review so we don't lose our place on the main challenge.

One bug: I cant see all someone's friends.  WHen I press the see more button I only see four for myself or someone else.

Another bug: everything looks bolded when it isn't.  It looks fine in the window but in the preview and the final submission, it all looks bold when it wan't.

Katherine, when I go to individual member pages, it is taking a lot of unnecessary clicks to even get to posts and book reviews of individuals.  I really liked being able to see individual people and following their reading without all the extra going around and around.  For example, I know your 2007 team reads a lot of lines I don't normally so I depended on your team as the first place to go to browse and look at the Desires and Presents etc before shopping.  In the current format, it is really much harder to be able to scan individual blogs efficiently while at lunch etc.  because I have to click here and click there. Maybe there is a quicker way I have not figured out yet.

I am not trying to be picky.  Probably should have signed up to do Beta testing but was swamped at work.  I just want to comment so if things can be made more enjoyable, they will be mre enjoyable for all.

Well, I blogged my 3 books for tonight and now i need to go take care of the family.  THanks for helping me at least get these up tonight.

Re: Have to walk before we

Thanks Jayne ... I'm glad you're working on the Team thing ..... on other sites that have a similar format to this one, I've noticed they've set up the members into what they call Groups  ... I suppose a Group could be a Team?   ..... well, I'm sure your Techies are playing around with the ideas ..... the site I'm thinking of is the one for Taste of Home magazine ..... http://community.tasteofhome.com/   .... they just recently made the site change too, and to much grumbling at first ....... I hadn't realized the site had changed  until Christmas when I went looking for a recipe ...... I think their format is very similar, though the lay out of course is unique

Merri, have you discovered the "my Favourites" function?  ... it's great for helping you find your favourite threads again
