Keeping track of all my books, TBR pile and all

Does anyone have any ideas about maintaining a list or catalogue of books that you own? I know my library numbers more than one thousand and that I like to be able to think of a book and then easily find it. I have thought of setting up a computer database but I think generating it would be very time consuming and I don't have the right kind of computer program to do the job right. I have a simple version of Microsoft Office that does not include the database Access. I priced adding it recently - over $300.00, a bit too pricey for a hobby. I know there are some online databases you can use to keep track of your books. I tried one but I didn't find very useful to try to retreive the information I need. If any one out there has some thoughts on this subject I would appreciate your imput. Thank-you

Linda, MS Excel Program

Hi, Linda:

Does your Microsoft Office program include the Excel Program?  If yes, then I may be able to help you.  If not, then we can think of another way.

Linda ....

check out  www.fictiondb.com      ... do their tour and then a free trial     .....   I use their bookshelf capabilities to keep track of my books ... which is great because they have every Harlequin / Silhouette published .... the Mills & Boon ones no, but they are willing to add the titles you have  .... adding to your personal bookshelf is very simply adding a checkmark to the book as all the books are already there  .... so if you have complete lines like I do, you simply pull up the list and add check marks to each book   ..... or you can do it by authors instead of lines

you can search by author or line ... you can access books by the month they were released and are to be released ... I like that function as it helps me keep informed of upcoming releases .... you can even select books to go on a wish list and print that up

books you've read you can rate .... you can tag books with personal tags only seen by you or with tags the other members can see  ..... if the database is incorrect you can offer corrections very easily   .... I love the site!

I use the website to keep track of all my books .... books that I've read I enter into my own database ... you can use Excel or MS Access ... in fact, Access might have a library template already built so all you have to do is modifiy to what you want or use it as is ... I'm sure if it's not with the program the MS site will have one to download    ..... I use Lotus Approach, just a preference over MS but pretty much the same

what's nice about a database over an Excell spreadsheet is you can sort your records and search very easily   and design various printouts with only the info you want at that time

cataloguing the TBR

I just gave up. I need to do it but I found I was spending all my time doing that and not reading.

catalogue questions

Thank you Katherine for your useful suggestions. I will try the Fiction BD again. However Paisley I think you may have a point! All the time doing the catalogue and none left to read after working for a living as well!
