Ok... when I have kids... my kids are totally going to kill me.
I love a good romantic name. I look at a name and I think "wow, that would be classic, so romantic, I'm sure the kid will hate it, but I just love it. And you can do so many short forms! How cute!!!"
Ever since I read some Victorian book with this character in it... I've been thinking BRONWYN for a girl. (And hey, we have an author named that around here! lol)
And someone shoot me now.... because after my recent Dark-Hunter obsession, I'm starting to think "Acheron" would be delightful for a boy. You could call him Ash! How sweet. Well, when the kid asks him why mommy picked such an odd name for him... I'm wondering how he'll feel about 11 000 year old greek gods that scream power and sex? *blushes*
I'm hoping when the time comes I get some self control or someone talks me down. I'm certain though that at minimum I'm going to end up going crazy with the middle names, since you can get away with anything there.
Funny note: my sis is marrying a guy named "Brown". (most common name ever). At dinner the other day I recommended she named a future daughter Charlotte. She seriously considered it for a moment. Then I slyly snickered "she'd be Charlie Brown!" And my sis was horrified that the name could be shortened that way.
So hey.... anyone have their own "romantically inspired" baby names?

Baby Names
I don't have a romantically inspired name yet. But since you talk about '
CharlieCharlotte Brown', I got one for you, I change the spelling slightly to protect the innocenceI know someone, his last name is Loda, he was going to name his baby first name to be Dennis, middle name to be Free.

Well that's not charming or cute! I want a charming sweet and romantic name. I was thinking even if I land 'em with crazy (but classical and romantical) names than they can always shorten it to a nickname of their choice.
Gwendolyn - Gwen, Wendy (Dolly... hell no I wouldn't let my baby get called Dolly)
Bronwyn - Winnie, Bron
Cynthia - Cyn, Thia
Charlotte - Charlie, Lottie (I'm a fan of feminine names, so Charlie wouldn't be my pref... I wouldn't name a girl Francesca or Harriet... Frank or Harry)
For a boy... Acheron/Ash, Bryn, Tristan....
Have I mentioned I have a slight complex (and jealousy) of people who can have nicknames? My mom hated nicknames and named all four of her kids five letter names with no possible nicknames. Boooooooooring... I'll tell her she can blame herself for her grandkiddies names.
Didn't anyone call you Jan?
Lots of people go by their middle names so be careful there as well . I don't have kids so never got into the thinking about names except for one set of boy names and a girls name which would have been Kaelee which is my husbands and my initials. Initials are something to consider as well as a cousin was given two middle names so his would be AFSS. I like Elizabeth and Veronica but not Archie and Jughead. I like girl's names that have three or more (I am having a moment here and can't think of the right word-is it sylabels) to them. I always envied my girlfriend who was Virginia as I thought it flowed. I also like C(K)atherine and Isabella. For boys I like short strong traditional names like John, Mark,Luke etc. You could always wait until the baby comes I hear from quite a few people that they name themselves.
Ps I have a niece called Bryn Camille

Kids Names
I would like to interject something here. I taught school for 35 years and the one thing I learned was that if a child has an unusual name or one that can be shortened to something unusual then the other kids will tease them and laugh at them creating a problem for them. So please think of the consequences of any name you give a child and please don't pick one that is dramatically different or that can be abbreviated to something not so nice.

Oh my gosh
I hope you start reading some other books well don't go to the J.R. Ward books till after you have kids. I don't want to hear of one with the name Tohrment or Phury. If you named a son Acheron he'd probably disown you or maybe save his money at a very young age and take you to court to change his name.

Names too Unique
There was a piece of news recently, that a child (9 or 10 years old) in New Zealand took her parents to court to change name from 'Talula can do the Hula' to a regular name. Don't believe me, go check it out in the odd news section of yahoo.

Ellen Too... I am looking
Ellen Too... I am looking at the names and looking at what it could be shortened too... and from the ones I've considered, I don't think any of them could be shortened to something bad. (Dennis, Penis, Richard, Dick, Ashley, Asslee, etc) But yeah... keeping it in mind. I don't want ugly implications or unfeminine names... I just love a good romantic name. What's the worst they can say? Mommy is a sap? I'm gonna try to find a balance.
Debkc.... too late! Already read all the JR Ward books. But don't worry. I wasn't tempted by any of those names. And like I said, I'm going to try to limit myself to MIDDLE NAMES so that even if it's too sappy it's not going to be utterly shaming and the only name they can use. Really... I just don't like boring and safe names. Maybe a tradtional first name, but an interesting middle.... *promises self to be restrained*
In defense of ACHERON.... I think I could pass it off as a classy middle name. It sounds proper and British. As if it were an old family name. Acheron is much more manly than giving a man the name Ashley.
I wasn't trying to be cute or charming. It was meant to be a joke, the last name should be pronounce as 'loader'. The first name split to: Denn - is
Oh, Orchid, I thought you said the DAD wanted to do that name. And I was like, slap that dad, at least I'm trying to be romantic and classy in the names rather than a derogatory name. :p
Chloe (you may not like this one, no short form, think of a middle name then)
Orchid! Oh sweetness, I forgot to mention that one. But it's a HUGE favourite of mine. Huge. Chloe Sullivan is my fav character on Smallville. And there are nicknames.... Chlo, Chloester, Chlobear. Gimme.
I saw that story
The name is Talula Does The Hula. Could you imagine? The article says she tells everyone her name is K. Not that you can blame her. And just look at the celebrities. I'm definitely wondering if some of those kids will be changing names later on down the road.
So, back to the original question. I can tell you my oldest dd, Aurora, came straight out of a SSE book (#6 to be exact). I still have the book. I was 13 when I first read it and hadn't heard the name before (I obviously didn't remember is was Sleeping Beautys name). I also liked that you could shorten it to Rory, if so desired. My dd is definitely not a Rory.
I find the nickname discussion interesting. My name can be shortened (to Mandy), but my mom hated it. So I only go by it with my nieces/nephews, and since the word "aunt" is in front, I remember to answer
I think when choosing a name, you have to consider what it can be shortened to.
My cute name story is this girl I went to school with. Her name was Ruby Ruby. We used to all call her Ruby2 or Ruby squared. She got to the point where she'd sign her name that way too!
Oh, and I loved the "Charlie Brown" name. But maybe that's just because I'm a HUGE Peanuts fan?

Chloe was one of my favourite names (I almost use it for my dd), if I remember correctly, it means love (I could be wrong). Mind you, I didn't mention it to any one at that time, a few years later, 2 of my very good friends (they don't know each other) picked Chloe for their first daughter. Talking about coincidence! And yes, Chlo is the shortened form
(to me, not much difference).
I'm glad you like it.

Strange celebrity names? Oh, I know - they can be awful. I'm not sure what's wrong with some of those guys. Apple? Titus? H'm. Maybe they need to borrow some of the baby name books that I use for referencing names in my writing.
Romantic names, Janet? How about Victoria, Rebecca, and Alannis to list a few girl's ones? And boys...well, they're a bit harder IMO. Let's see. Alexander, Rhett (had to add one of my favorite H's name), Lance, or Grantham (Grant)? These are all very old romantic names. Of course, they may not be what you're thinking of at all. When it comes to names I'm an old-fashioned girl, what can I say? LOL My DD's real name is Elisabeth Cathreen (pronounced with a long 'e'). She was dubbed Katie by my Mom, and it just... stuck, so actually now she IS 'Katie'. Can't imagine calling her Elisabeth, even though I love the name.

I have always leaned toward
I have always leaned toward traditional names. I have always loved, for boys, Joshua, Michael (not Mike), David (not Dave), Matthew (Matt is okay I guess), Paul, Marcus, Jacob, Steven. Hum? I think these are all Biblical names.
For girls I have always liked, Eve/Eva, Elizabeth, Anna/Anne, Katherine/Catherine, Diana, Jacklyn, Mary, Rebecca, Rhyannon (discovered after reading romance), Cynthia, Sarah (But I don't like how it is pronounced in Spanish).
I know I am forgetting boy/girl names that I really like. As you can see, they are pretty much traditional names.
Margie :)

please pick one that is not at the top of the list today.
My name is Linda and in 1948 it was the most popular name given to girls and David was the most popular name given to boys. I always had other Lindas and more than one sometimes in my classes at school. Ditto for David. I came from a small town. The population wasn't that big. A suggestion for all those exotic names..
I have an idea!
Instead of emotionally scarring a child for life <grin> with an exotic name, consider adopting a rescue dog or cat. You can call them the most outlandish names possible and they will love you and think you are the best thing since dog biscuits anyway.
I like Aurora too.

Crystal and Linda,
'I have to say though, there were NO Crystals around when my mom named me that (even though you trip over them everywhere these days) and I always loved my name.'
LOL! Actually, I like the name Crystal, too. I've known four Crystals during my life - and all of them seemed appropriately named. I think it has an enchanting sound.
Linda,(Kaelee) your name is Spanish, and it means "the pretty or beautiful one" - at least according to my name books. I don't know about you, but that sounds romantic to me! BTW, my name was also very popular the year I was born. In my small school I went by Mandy because there were two more Amandas in my grade level. So, I know what you mean about having a common name. Still, at least we have common names that sound pretty and have nice meanings, right? We could be stuck with something much, much worse!

About getting a cat/dog and
About getting a cat/dog and giving them wild names.... well, my point is to give kids nice names. This thread's point for me was to giggle over the funny options, and talk out what goes TOO far and would be unbearable. Avoid the typical, find something that is special, lovely, not ugly, but also not embarrassing.
Names can be a conversation starter, and it's good for your name to have special meaning or history.
Another guy's name I like... Julian... and Lucas.
Aha....
Okay. You want only unusual names. Well, of those you just mentioned, I like Julian.
Other lesser-used male names I like: Drake - though I think it's a little on the dark side. Trevor. Keegan. Judson. Colin. Gavin. Darius. Bryson. Adrian. Alexander. Aiden. Montgomery (but I don't like it shortened to Monty).
Female names: Emerald (shortened to Emma). Adria. Isadora. Tabitha. Nicola. Larissa. Gwendolyn & Gwyneth. Daphne. Savanna.
All, or most of these could be shorted to something else if a person wanted to. Or if the kid wanted to later.
"Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see."

Drake - dark Trevor,
Drake - dark
Trevor, Judson, Bryson - a little too "hard" sounding. Make me think "cowboy"
Keegan, Colin - too Irish unless you have the blood
Gavin - kind of like this one
Darius - hmm, makes me think sexy vamps. I'm not sure. But you know, I have a cousin-in-law (female) by that name.
Adrian, Alexander - kind of like. Especially Alexander, though I think "Alex" is too common a name, so maybe call him Xander? :p
Aiden - there are so many Aiden's right now (in my fam already) so I think I should stay away. But it is a nice name.
Montgomery - makes me think Monty Python
Emerald (shortened to Emma). Adria. Isadora. Tabitha. Nicola. ... not quite what I would go for.
Larissa. Gwendolyn & Gwyneth. Daphne. Savanna. - would go for these. :)
Cowboys and vampires....
I take it you don't like cowboys? LOL Well, I guess those first three do kind of sound that way. But I read a mixture of subgenres, including western themes - guess it's rubbing off!
LOL about Monty Python! I don't like the nickname of Monty either, but I still like the long version.
Darius does sound like a sexy vamp. And it also sounds so very masculine to me. It's different to think of a woman being called that. But then I just recently heard of a guy called Shirley, so I guess genders are crossed even on names that you wouldn't think would be.
Xander would be good. 'X' names are rare.
Keegan is definitely Irish. Colin has Gaelic roots too, but it's actually used a lot in England as well. I like this name because of the actor Colin Firth. Also, when I was a little girl and read 'The Secret Garden', Mary's cousin is named Colin, and I loved the sound of it.
Of the girls names I'd posted, I particularly like Gwendolyn & Gwyneth. Don't ask me why. Maybe it's just the way they're pronounced. Speaking of 'G' names, I used to think Gretchen is cute too, but over time I've gotten disenchanted with that one.
Glad you liked some of the names.

I take it you don't like cowboys?
It's more the cows and horses. And a matter of geography. I'm not near any cowboys, so it isn't really a part of my world. If I gave a cowboyish name, people would be like, where did that come from?
Of the girls names I'd posted, I particularly like Gwendolyn & Gwyneth. Don't ask me why. Maybe it's just the way they're pronounced. Speaking of 'G' names, I used to think Gretchen is cute too, but over time I've gotten disenchanted with that one.
Mmm. I like the Gwen & Gwyn. They are just very romantic, classic, feminine, and unique. Gretchen sounds like "wretch" which leaves me unenchanted. It sounds like the name of a little monster of a girl. *grin*

Isn't it funny?
Amanda - Its funny how you had others w/your name, and I went all thru school (incl. a secretarial one after grad), all my pt jobs and up until my current one without dealing with anyone w/my name. Go figure. Of course, I think our name hit its stride in the early 80's.
Now the funny story. When my g-mom was telling a friend of hers about my birth, she of course asked about the name. When she told her, the response was "that's an old lady's name!". I'm guessing not too many people would say that nowadays
Margie - Interesting what names we don't like the nicknames for. I had to laugh at your David/Dave one. That's dh's name, and he introduces himself as "Dave", but his family and me and my mom all call him David. I obviously took my cues from his family and it stuck!
I remember liking Victoria for a girl growing up, but hated Vicki (maybe because I went to school w/a girl named that who I didn't get along with). It was never on my consideration list for that reason.
How many of you have the same name by more than 2 people in your family? I saw it touched on above. Does anyone have it more by marriage than the Sr/Jr deals? Our family had the Judy/Bill deal. My dad's sis is Judy, my mom is Judie, my dad's 3 cousins all married a Judy. Now my aunt married a Bill, my dad's one cousin is Bill, so now there are 2 Bill & Judy's. They were all smart enough not to name their kids those names. Now I meet David, and his parents are - you guessed it - Bill & Judy, with a nephew named Billy. What could possibly be the odds? Another reason my girls are Aurora and Amelia.
I go along with the giving a name that 10 other kids in class have, but isn't too unusual. Of course, as long as you don't name it Moxie Crimefighter (Penn Jillette) or Dweezil (Frank Zappa), or the Hula name, I guess it couldn't be that bad?

She's seems ok with her name up until now too. My younger dd isn't totally fond of hers. But maybe that's because when people hear her say Amelia, they instantly say "oh, like Amelia Bedilia". She's only going into 2nd grade, so I'm hoping that part will go away in a few years.

Amanda, I don't mind Dave or Mike. I just really like the way David and Michael sound so, if it was my kid, I would never use the nickname and never introduce them that way.

Heheh... we had a problem
Heheh... we had a problem in my family with David/Daves. We had a few in the family already, and then all of a sudden five years ago it seemed like EVERYONE was dating a Dave. I got introduced to at least six Daves at our family reunion. (I have 30 cousins, so pretty much all the of age females were dating someone named Dave) The flare-up of Daves didn't last too long, most of the relationships didn't pan out. (they were mostly high school and college relationships)
Opposite
I'm doing the opposite. My husband rejected the more "romantic" names on my baby name list so I'm working my way down the list, using the names for my heroes as I write books. My #1 choice was Finn but I had to skip that because my best friend had just published a book about a Finn. #2 and #3 were Nathan and Mason. And next up is Charlie.
For boys I tended to like the names with a little poetry in them. My husband wanted something that would sound good over the loudspeaker at the Friday night football games.
Girls names are harder for me. I don't know why.
Funny story about popular names, when we chose my older son's name it was in the 300's on the list of popular names. It's in the top 50 now. Weird. He always ends up having to go by his initial in school because there are other kids with the same name. We really thought we'd chosen something unique.
My other son goes by a short form of his name and it totally suits him. I wouldn't be surprised if he never uses the long form as an adult.
This is an interesting discussion. Names are such an integral part of us. When I was born my folks didn't have a girl's name picked out. My birthday is Feb. 13th and the doctor suggested Valentina. I think I make a much better Ellen than I would have a Valentina. (And when I married, I'd have been Valentina Hartman. Corny!)
Cheers,

the name game ....
with the name Katherine, I've been called just about every short form .... I'm named after my grandmother who was named after her grandmother and so on and so on .... Katherine or Katerina is a strong Ukrianian name ... as a kid my grandmother used to call me Katusia or Kasia .... at school the kids wanted to call me Kathy or Kat ... odd it wasn't until highschool that someone called me Kate and then Katie .... my grandmother was known as Kay, and in honesty I love that short form, so grand ... to me my grandmother was a larger than life woman, she had such a hard life as an immigrant to Canada in the 30s
now as a grown up I'm called Katherine, Kathy, Kay .... depends on who you are ;) ..... Kathy usually because that's the name that followed from school .... Kay by friends who heard dh call me that once ... and Katherine because that's always how I sign my name .... after all, it is my name :)
funny about name popularity .... in the early 50's my grandparents were living in Toronto on Shaw Street and there were quite a few Ukrainian families ... my aunt named Natalie met and married a Bill ...... my uncle named Bill met and married a Natalie .... so as kids we distinguished who was who by referring to one couple as Uncle Bill and Aunt Nettie from Toronto (the rest of the family were then living north of the City)
for a boy, I've always been partial to the name Adam ... there's alot of strength in that name .... my brother is Michael, and I adore that name .. though he only gets called that when we want to grab his attention! LOL ... another name is Ben or Benjamin ....
for a girl, Anna (after my Mom, that grandmother name tradition LOL) .... I also like Sarah .... Emily is a nice traditional name and depending on the personality can be shortened to Emm or Millie

Romance names
I love romantic names. I named my son Deverell after my favorite Romance hero Roark Deverell Beauchamp in Shana by Kathleen Woodiwiss.

Hey Carla... I like the name "Devlin" a bit better than Deverell. Same nickname of "Dev" can be used. I'd worry it's too close to "Devil" though and that I was jinxing the kid to be darker/moodier. Can associations of your name affect personality? lol
Fun to discuss. I haven't looked up meanings of names. That would probably scare me off some names.
I love to look up the meanings...
... and origins of names. I've done it ever since I was a teen, because it's fun to see if people's personalities actually fit their name's meaning. For instance, my husband's first name means 'watchful' - and is he ever! Also my dad's name mean 'leader of the people' - Oh, yeah, as a minister he's pretty bossy alright! LOL However, some names have strange meanings. My brother Brandon's name means 'dweller on Beacon hill'. What the heck is that supposed to mean?
Also my grandpa's name is Rufus, which means 'red-haired'. What little hair he has left has never been red to my knowledge! <GG>
Though I think the meanings are fun, I don't think they ought to have a lot of bearing on what you name a kid. After all, a very romantic name might have a horrible or stupid meaning, and vice versa.

Yeah.... I don't know if I'd name a child after a person in a romance novel, I wouldn't admire someone that much and want to imbue the child with the meaning and history behind that character. :p I would just use the name because I liked it. And the only thing with meanings I'd pay attention to... is if the name means something really boring or implies something I disagreed with.

Meaning of Names
When I (& my dh, mainly me) was picking the names for our kid(s), we looked into the meaning, length(# of syllables, alphabet) & the sound; in that order.
My dd's first name means 'Joy', ds's name means 'Fire or King of Island/People'. Their middle names have very good meaning too, those picked by dh's parents, I like those names too.

I like the name Lily, too, Bernie.
Shell, that's funny about your friend named Bambi. But I know what it's like to be teased for my name - not Amanda but for my maiden name, which was Rice. "Hey, where's your uncle Ben?" or "Amanda Rice-a-Roni" and corny stuff like that. But you know how kids are. They can make a joke out of anything. I have to admit I was glad when I married into a very commonly used name that no one could tease me about.

This naming is fun!
For girls I like Emma and Devon. For boys I like Nicholas and Tristan. I like the sexy vampire name Darius too. I once met a woman with the name Ngaire (pronounced Nye-Ree) - loved it so I named my cat after her. That's the nice thing about pets you can use the unusual names and no one gets hurt - like Harley, Dudley, Diesel, Chevy...
A neighbour named her little girl Rowan for no reason whatsoever - just because she liked it. I later read an old harlequin presents and the heroine's name was Rowan. I gave the book to her to give to her daughter when she is older.
My aunt's name is Isabel and she was teased with "Is a bell necessary on a bicycle?" Needless to say, she goes by Belle now!
A cousin of mine named all her 4 kids with "J" names, (Jason, Jack, Judith and Jennifer) they later adopted an older child (age 7), Michael, - when he was older he legally changed his name to a James Michael.
Carla - Shana was a favourite book too.

Janet--In some ways I believe this is true, and I kept it in mind when I was naming my kids. For my son, I wanted to name him after my dad and dh because I want him to be a man of integrity like they are. The only concession I had to make was to use dh's middle name because it is tradition his family for the first born male to have the dad's middle name. I was pretty cool with that because I respect my f-i-l, too, and I felt like that was giving my son another person to look up to. When I was pregnant with my daughter, I chose Elizabeth because 1) P&P is my favorite book and 2) the heroine is a strong person (which I guess actually makes her name romantically inspired--although I would argue that P & P is not completely a romance...). I figured that my dd would have to be strong and quick-witted to keep up with her older bro. Her middle name was a problem because everything that dh and I liked made her name waaaay too long. While my children are very much their own people, I do see a lot of what I was wanting to give them with their names in the personalities, especially my daughter who is extremely strong-willed.
There are several members of my extended family who have gone the same letter or same initial route for their kids. I am not creative enough to do that, I guess. Plus, I like the older traditional names. Fortunately, my hubby didn't have a problem with going that route.
A member here--Beth B--was almost named after a character in a romance novel, and she is quite grateful that she wasn't. I can't remember what the name was, but maybe I can convince her to drop by and share the story.

Ok... I came across a thread at Amazon where they were discussing baby names.... and this one woman takes the cake. I half love her and hope to have the same nerve she had.... and I half fear for her children.
Such romantic names.... quoting her....
Trystan Bard-- Trystan was a knight from Arthur's Round Table , Bard was the singer/songwriter/news-giver who went from place to place with the harp.
Bryar Rose-- yes. I named my daughter after Sleeping Beauty.
Kewyn Tor-- Kewyn is a variation of 'Gawain'--another knight from the Round Table. 'Tor' was a character from a Robin McKinley book--(The Hero and the Crown) and from a Stephan Donaldson book (The Mirror of Her Dreams). It means 'prince'.
Arwyn Star-- Yes. From Lord of the Rings. Oddly enough, she's not the only Princess Arwen we know-- the nice lady who runs our local yarn store has a granddaughter named Arwen. Her pediatrician said that she'd met an Eowyn and a Smeagol in recent years as well.
When I blog, I call them 'Big T', 'Chicken', 'The Cave Troll', and 'Ladybug'. On my book blurbs, they're 'Arthur', 'Gwynyfar', 'Gawain', and 'Ygraine'. I have a tattoo with a pictograph -- briar rose, sword and harp, hawk (Gawain is a red-tailed hawk in welsh) and crown-- on my arm. I'm getting the moon and star for Arwyn added just as soon as we have the pocket cash. (I feel bad--it's been two years!)
So, uhm, yeah-- we're just weird that way.
Now... I've also seen a couple other names this week that I liked: Byrony, Avery. (I wouldn't do Byrony probably though)Avery-Office Supplies
I think there is a brand name 'Avery' for address labels, file labels & such.
Byrony - shortened to be 'Ronnie'
Just a thought.
