Quiet Canadians ~ KatherineT's July Summary

Wow, another very poor reading month for me.   As we are very busy now (last week was the beginning of our 14 week harvest), I had hoped that I'd have great success with audio books.  I'm rather disappointed on that front.  Perhaps it was the book, the second in the In Death series by J. D. Robb.  I've found myself very easily distracted and having to go back to relisten to get even the basics of the plot.  Maybe there's just too much going on in this one, too many characters to keep track of.   Ebooks on the other hand have been wonderful.  I can read them late at night when I can't sleep without turning on the lights to wake up dh.  But over all I've been in a reading slump.  I need some sort of challenge to inspire me.  Any ideas?

hail

did the hail we've had in the last couple of weeks do any damage to crops?

I've been finding ebooks awesome. I'm finding they are faster reads than print.

Reading slump- hmm don't know I just keep reading till I come across one that gets me out of it

re: Hail

about a month ago we had a bit of hail .. it hit our earliest crop of celery and hit some of our red onions ..... some of the celery had to be replanted but over all the early crop recovered .... we're harvesting now .. so when you go into A&P/Dominion/Price Chopper or Loblaws/Great Canadian Superstore/No Frills, you may be buying our celery and our bunch carrots  .....

we've been very lucky and didn't get the hail the growers got in Niagara / Grimsby .... some growers were totally wiped out ..... it's a farmer's biggest nightmare hail .... so distructive ..... a friend's apple orchard was hit and there won't be a crop this year, the trees were shredded ... in fact, the orchard is at risk for disease from the hail wounds ..... hail .. the damage it can do in just a few minutes

we've had lots of rain this year .... luckily not quite as much as other areas ... but it can slow down some now ... we really could use some nice drying sunshine ... good weather for onions to grow

I'm not sure why I'm in a slump .... maybe just too much going on  .... I know my tbr is daunting and yet I can't seem to stop buying more!  LOL  ..... yes, ebooks are faster to read ... and I'm struggling making a decision on whether to switch my autobuy authors to ebook .... I just like knowing I have the print book on hand ... ebooks seem more vulnerable to being lost  ..... if ebooks were lower in cost it wouldn't be a tough decision, but as they are almost the same as a print book it just seems more logical to pay the little more and get it in print ... or wait for it to be at the UBS or on eBay

whew

glad to hear you didn't have too much damage. I don't think I need to buy onions the rest of the year. My friends brought home a 50lbs bag, then we sat and pealed, washed, chopped and froze them. I have about 5 bags in my freezer and if I need more I just run upstairs. I raely ever buy celery but I do do my grocery shopping at Price Choppers. Carrots I may need to pick up next week. I guess the peach farmers in the Niagara area are getting hit too because the canning factory here is closing.

I went a little crazy with my buying last month, so far I'm doing good and only ordered 6 so far. And haven't replished my Paypal so if the money isn't there I can't orderSmile I still prefer print books but in some cases I'll get the ebook. Some come out cheaper cause I'm not paying shipping. I prefer print for some autobuys like Diana Palmer so I can display them.

I just finished 4 Caitlyn Willows ebooks. They were from the series 5 book series Teamworkand naturally before I found out it was a series I read #4. Yesterday I finished up 1, 2, 3, 5. I reading them one after the other like that was like watching a weekly TV show without having to wait the week in between.

I am sorry about the hail

I am sorry about the hail but glad it was not too bad. We had some strange weather here yesterday. Glenn got these new weather alert radios so we can read and not be tied to the TV during bad weather. It went off for the first time yesterday and of course..the first warning was a tornado warning! I was freaked and couldn't find the right button to go from message to voice to get more details. I checked---it said tornado several times but I think it was the shortest tornado warning ever because within a minute it went down to severe thunderstorn warning. We get a lot of hail here in Colorado, much more so than I ever saw in NC.

I have a lot of problems concentrating on audiobooks. Glenn loves them but I get distracted and I just miss things. I think I am more a visual than an aural person. I make connections better when I see things in print. I respond better to hearing tales I already know, like hearing The Christmas Carol at Christmas.

My count is down too, I think.  I don't like reading slumps.   think mine is over but I am still behind on reviewing.  The only thing that worked for me was trying something new but familiar.
