I've just ordered a book I saw on a Today Show Interview called Why Not Catch 21?: The Stories Behind the Titles by Gary Dexter (which I will review at some point), because book titles really fascinate me, how authors come up with them, which ones attract readers, which ones work for whatever reasons and which don't...
I'm looking forward to reading this book on titles, and I thought it might be fun to discuss titles we love, titles we found irresistible, and for authors (and even for editors, if you are all out there, lurking... *G*) which titles changed, what the originals were, etc. As a writer, I think finding the perfect title is such a fun thing, and hopefully it sticks. It's funny that while we authors can be very open to revisions on our books, we can get quite married to a title idea, and hate to change it.
Or at least, I've had a few of those moments. I know with Talking in Your Sleep, I very much wanted the book to be called And to All A Good Night... since both characters had sleep disorders and it was a Christmas story. I have since seen the wisdom of my editor's ways. ;) I like the TIYS title very much.
The original title of my first book as I submitted it to Blaze was The Devil You Know. In and of itself, not a bad title, but not very Blazey. It became Virtually Perfect, another title I brainstormed when asked to come up with another one, and I loved it so much more. Both titles fit a story about two people who meet after being online lovers first, but VP is so much sexier and fun.
As a reader, my favorite Blaze titles have been By the Book by Nancy Warren which I just loved for the pun, and which inspired my title, Pick Me Up, which was brainstormed with Brenda Chin's help, but I was tickled with it because like Nancy's title which tells someone to "buy the book" mine yelled from the shelf "pick me up"! LOL
My other favorite title is Isabel Sharpe's Before I Melt Away... which I also think is the most romantic Blaze title ever.
I enjoy mainstream series book titles as well - Charlaine Harris's Dead titles are very clever and I always wonder if they were the original titles, and what the story behind them might be...
So, what are the stories behind your titles, the titles that would have been but weren't, or, if you are a reader, what are your favorite titles? I will admit that a title will grab me almost more than a cover image will, but that could just be me. How about stories of how titles came to be, or the trials and tribulations of finding a good title?

I had to add Wendy Robert's Remains of the Dead, which was a wonderful book, but the title was what really drew me in.

Buzzword titles
You know these days I pretty much assign a buzz word title to my WIPS. They don't always stay but it puts me in a Romance frame of mind.
My first book was Wedding at Windover. I loved it. It became Hired By The Cowboy.
Marriage at Circle M was mine and it stayed.
I couldn't come up with one for my soldier book, which I had dubbed "Home Fires" and which became The Soldier's Homecoming and I was thrilled with that.
It's funny to see how the UK office titles things vs. the NA offices though. My new release was Falling For The Marshal, which would have made it through NA fine I think, but the UK keeps things more non-specific (just like my soldier was out of uniform on my cover) so I got Falling For Mr. Dark and Dangerous.
The Cowboy's Princess has become THe Rancher's Runaway Princess which is possibly my favourite of all my titles...and quite possibly my favourite book to date.

Hey Donna
I hadn't thought of that, how the UK/US titles are different... I do love to look at how different lines gravitate to different titling trends... it's such a strong part of the branding -- you can almost tell what line a book comes from just by its title -- or can you?
Here's a little test -- see if we can name the line from the title (and of course, if you've read them, you'll know, but in the spirit of the game...)
The Way Home
In Bed With the Devil
The Bride's Baby
Heated Rush
The British Billionaire Affair
Getting Some
The Lawman's Secret Son
Hot Zone
Mistress Under Contract
So, could you guess them all without peeking?

great topic
Sam, I love this topic. I HAVE to have a title in mind when I'm working on a book, even if it gets changed. As it frequently does.
My January book is titled DADDY BY SURPRISE. It wasn't my working title, but when I started the book, I thought the heroine got pregnant from their one-night stand. Before I finished the book, however, I emailed my editor and said, "Umm...you might want to re-think the title because the big surprise is SHE ISN'T PREGNANT."
Luckily, I have a wonderful editor who can see the big picture when I'm in the trenches. She felt the title still worked on several other levels and even had a great idea for the cover art. Whew!
So, tell me, where do you find out that your title has been changed for the UK? Someone on the Supers thread mentioned that LOVE, BY GEORGE (my title, BTW, George is a dog) had been changed, but I never found out to what.

Their Joined-up Family is the title. I found this on fantastic fiction site.
This is not near as fitting a title as Love By George IMHO
The fact that the same book can have two titles really, really bugs me as well.

Suckarino, Suckaroo
I'm horrible at titles. When I submitted Wanted Man, it was called Painted Love because it was about...a housepainter. Heh. The editor had to read it for a contest or I bet it would have gotten chucked just because the title was so ridiculous.
His Secret Past was called Truth or Dare which I liked but isn't very Superish. One of my joke suggestions for that book was Stairway to Harlequin because the hero is a rocker.
I have my fingers crossed that I'll get to keep the working titles for my 2009 books: The Boyfriend's Back and The Runner Up. They both work from a character motivation and plot hint point of view. I think they sound a little Superish. We'll see.
By the way, I love Talking in Your Sleep (Sam), The Soldier's Homecoming (Donna), and Baby by Contract (Deb). All great titles for great books!

Harlequin Titles in Other Countries
On Holly Jacobs Links page on her web site, there's a list of Harlequin sites for other countries. You can sometimes find your books on those just by searching.
She's trying to find the Iceland site if anyone knows the address or if it exists.
I just got French copies of Wanted Man which is called Sous le signe du mensonge. I used an online translation site to find out that means "Under the sign of the lie." I bet that's not a good translation, though.
Cheers,

I didn't know that!
That they retitle books!
I really like the original George title WAY better...
I have to look mine up -- the international copies I get, as far as I can tell, have always seemed to have the same titles...
Ellen, you kill me... you could probably do a single title series with those rock song titles, you know... ;) Sounds like a good theme to me...

I just looked up a German release -- they put About Last Night... in an anthology with Leslie Kelly and Kristin Hardy (woo hoo!), but they retitled it

I'll have a go....
The Way Home - Supers?
In Bed With the Devil - Blaze or SRS/Intrigue
The Bride's Baby - Romance
Heated Rush- Blaze
The British Billionaire Affair - Desire
Getting Some - Blaze
The Lawman's Secret Son - Supers or SSE or American (how's that for hedging my bets?)
Hot Zone - Blaze
Mistress Under Contract - Presents or Presents extra
My titles haven't changed for releases in the UK and NA, but some of the translations are great. Marriage at Circle M became (translated) Tell Me Your Secrets in both spanish and portuguese. It's a PERFECT title.

Oh, good grief. I really have to hope this is a good thing, culturally, that I simply don't understand. Because my first thought was "Did they use Superglue?"
Thanks for letting me know, Kaelee. I asked the power that be how to get this info...because I think it's interesting and some readers would be tickled to have this inside info. They couldn't tell me, so now I'm checking out Holly's site. Is there anything she doesn't know?
I'm guessing the Love, By George is an American-ism, for one thing. And they might have a rule about not using titles that in any way could be construed as mocking a monarch.
Very interesting, though.

Have to admit "Joined-Up" is a strange... could have been combined, surprise, unexpected... but joined-up? LOL
Ah well. My German title seems to be a line of dialogue, unless it's idiomatic in some way I don't understand, not being a native speaker, or if the translator was off.
On the title guessing, it's harder than it seems, yeah? I don't want to ruin it just yet, but you can of course check your answers by typing the titles into amazon, etc. I actually thought, before I did that, that it would be more obvious...though you guys did pretty well. In Bed With the Devil seems bedeviling... ;)

Great thread, Sam!
Sometimes a great title can tempt me to read a book by an author of whom I know nothing... Of course, if I already like the author, even a ridiculous title will get a look.
I'd noticed some of the other houses doing the same thing when bringing British titles to the US (notably for Agatha Christie and D. E. Stevenson novels back in time). It makes it confusing and expensive for collectors...
However, where there is slang in a title, I totally understand, as the languages, similar though they are, are different! So far, I haven't had a problem with that. (Just wait till I'm published, though!!

I love alliterations
Sam - thanks for the link from Snippetathon.
I've seen the M&B covers but didn't realize the name change, either.
I won't take the challenge b/c I read the other guesses and they sound good to me - I'll just end up copying.
I love alliterations. My HAR wip that's making the contest rounds now is entitled Marry Me, Ma'am? but my dd doesn't like it.
Not only is it the title, but it's also the first and last lines of the ms. So, if they change the name...

Anita...
Is that the one with the heroine of ill-repute? If so, it has a somewhat funny hook in there (that you may or may not want) with Marry Me Ma(d)ame... ;)
What was her name? Maybe Marry Me, <name>?
The ma'am hits me as the part that might not get by eds...
I love talking titles, and oddly, just got an author copy of that German anthology I was mentioning the other day! Nice cover, though I never know what to do with all the international copies I have stacked up...

I like the title. I just hated it when I first got called ma'am because it made me feel so old but it is a term that is used by very polite people out here in the Canadian west . Now that I am older I really appreciate the term and the respect that goes with it. We often called our schoolteacher's ma'am.

Hmmm
IMO, Kaelee might have just summed up all the reasons eds may want to change ma'am.. *G* But don't go by me -- they may want it changed, or maybe not. HAR titles seem to be sort of down-home descriptive, similar to Supers. I think Brenda Chin (with Blaze) once said about 8 of 10 titles are changed or modified, and it's just something we get used to ... but you never know, so stick with it and see what happens! Is the hero a cowboy? I could see if there's a cowboy on the cover, maybe the way they have of saying ma'am in the sexy way? ;)

I'd say Presents or Desire but I think I'd recognize it for sure if it was, but I don't.Presents. I stand corrected. I just saw a review of this and surprise, it totally was one, an early release thoughThe ways in which I judge superficially... lol
Designed to Annoy ... I thought this was cute. An older "Postcards" HP. I love an annoying heroine. I love a clumsy heroine. The title made me curious. In this case, it ended up being a stubborn intelligent heroine who wouldn't let the hero shrug her off, she held onto him like a dog on a bone to get her way. Her way being that he assumed responsibility for his abandoned/orphaned baby nephew. She got clever and cheeky with it, and tried to prove his brother could have fathered a kid... by making the hero desire her at a masked ball and seeing how far he'd take an instant attraction.
And a funny thing about titles.... if they mention "Greek", "Italian", "Sicilian", or "Spaniard" I'm usually tempted. If they mention "French", I'm not as interested. I don't even dislike the French! France is supposed to have a reputation for romance! I don't know why I don't find a French hero romantic. Partly because I think of mimes and twirly moustaches. I don't know.
About covers.... dark haired hero, with thick longish hair... I want to curl my fingers in it. Short cropped hair? Not as appealing. Blonde hair, I'm not a blond girl really.
Suits.... I read lots of HP/SDs, so there's lots of suits. I'm not much of a suit girl, unless the hero fills out the suit nicely. (sometimes the heroes look a little thin and don't fill it out entirely) I think in those cases it's better to show a little skin. (suggesting skin? who me???
) I'm all for faded black jeans and no shirt. Or an unbuttoned shirt if he wants a little modesty.

I don't know if Anita Mae's story has a cowboy in it or not but my heart went up a notch or more when this young hunky cowboy asked me to "excuse me ma'am" at the Calgary Stampede this year and DH was with me. Yes I can see why the title might not work but I can also see why it might work also. I am really disappointed when the title doesn't seem to fit the story. However I am more disappointed if the blurb on the back doesn't fit and I really, really hate it if the cover doesn't fit.

Ugh, I'm not so good with the title thing...
It takes me forever to come up with one that doesn't sound dorky!!! The hero (in my second WIP for Supers) is named Evan, and I'm going for a two word title that uses his name. It's killing me! I haven't written the whole dang book yet, but here I am, hung up on the title. <sigh> What a waste of my brain time!
The first WIP for Supers has a great title, which I absolutely love, and I'd feel crushed if they bought it but change the title. How silly is that? Really. I should just want them to BUY it! <thunk>

I am a read-only person or just a reader. I find in my everyday life when I am stuck finding a solution to a problem that I often spend time working on other less important things or even silly things because the problem is so over whelming. I'm thinking maybe you are stuck in your writing now and this is your solution to give your brain the rest it may need. Good luck with your writing. I am looking forward to reading your books in the future.

I have that happen from time to time, title stress, LOL, and sometimes I think it's what Kaelee is saying, at least in part, that we're grappling with a story issue, and trying to focus it by coming up with a title -- for instance, what's at stake for Evan? What's the problem, hope, or result? I used to tell my students, back when I taught, that for non-fiction, your title tells your audience what you're writing about, and for fiction writers, I think it often represents for us what we're writing about -- if we feel confused about that, the title comes harder. Thinking about titles sometimes helps me get my story straight, which is why I think they're important to us as writers, not just a selling tool... and maybe sometimes why it's disappointing when they're changed.

I know my comment came out of left field but Sam because you write you focused in on what I was trying to say.I know from another blog that Jodie is going through a rough patch right now and somehow I wanted to reassure her that it's okay to lose your focus because sometimes when you do the solution comes to you. An editor would have a field day with that run on sentence.
Sam I love your voice of reason and your thoughtful comments.

Titles
Titles are very hard for me. Honestly, a title either comes to me right away (hallelujah!), or I have a heck of a time choosing one that seems good enough.
This is true of even the poetry I write.
my email: starr_girl1@yahoo.com
Poetry is tough
I was a poet as an undergrad creative writing student -- I *never* saw myself writing fiction. But that focus on just short lines can really help your fiction writing a lot -- and hurt it, in that I had to really learn how to dig in to images, etc for details. Poetry is extremely tough. I still love it, though I don't really write any, but I love the way it shows up in the fiction lines sometimes. ;)
I know it's hard, and believe me, I don't always think this way when I'm struggling (though I try), but it's best to think of a writing problem as an opportunity to do what you're doing better. Problems slow us down and make us think, and that's not a bad thing.

Title problems
Sam - I'm flattered you remembered but the ms you're thinking of is Charley's Saint - where she's promiscuous and he's the local pastor.
Sam and Kaelee (waving to you) - Marry Me, Ma'am? is a contemporary western I wrote targeting the American line. Yes, the hero is a cowboy from a remote Montana ranch. I wanted to locate it here in Sask but then it wouldn't be a HAR.
Sam - I agree about title probs. I'm not saying this is your prob Jodie, but in my own experience, I've found a prob with the title equates to prob with the story. For example, Charley's Saint is Book 3 in a series. I wrote CS during NaNo last Nov, but I'm still writing the prequel and I started it before CS! When I finally picked a title 2 mos ago, the story seemed clearer and my writing picked up. Just the proposal, black moment and epiphany left to go...yes, in that order...don't ask...read the book...
Okay, I just read farther - Jodie, I didn't realize you're having probs with your wip. What blog is Kaelee referring to? I dropped out of SubCare b/c I couldn't keep up but I miss knowing when my friends need a (hug).
Sam - you're a poet? Really? Me too. My latest was the limerick I did on Page 1 of the Pass the Plot thread.
But ever since I wrote my first poem at age 6, I find them easy to do and can whip one up almost at the drop of a hat.

Title woes
Anita Mae, I like that title. I was thinking maybe Marry Me, Miss? until I found out the H is a cowboy.... And Missy would be a little too cutesie.
Jodie, with your H Evan, I automatically started thinking of the Evan Evans mysteries by Rhys Bowen... Every title has some variation of Evan or Evans in it, e.g., Evans Above, Evan and Elle, Evans to Betsy, etc. How about something like Ever Evan or Evan Love ??
